Initial presence and attempts at the Implantation of the Order The arrival of the Capuchins in India dates back to the year 1632 when a band of foreign Capuchin Missionaries landed in Pondichery. Their intention was to extend their missionary thrust to Tibet and Nepal; however it turned out that they continued their missionary ventures in the Vicariate of Agra and Patna. After slogging as missionaries for about two and half centuries, the idea of implanting the Order in India was considered as a possibility. Hence in 1880 a novitiate house was opened in Mussoorie. Just ten years later however this novitiate was closed down for want of vocations. A second attempt at beginning the Order in India was made on 26th February 1922, at the instance of the then General Minister of the Order, Br. Joseph Anthony of Persiceto. He inaugurated the novitiate personally at Sardhana, which could be said as the cradle of the Capuchin Order in India for many years to come. Two Indian novices were vested on this occasion in the novitiate named after St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen. The Superiors Regular of Agra, Ajmer, Allahabad and Lahore were jointly responsible for the success of this venture. Vocations to the Order came from many dioceses of India but more from the South than the North. To overcome many of the initial troubles in the area of formation, the novitiate was later placed under the care of the Superior Regular of Ajmer and to continue the post-novitiate formation, 9 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 a study house was started at St. Francis Monastery, Mussoorie. The early Capuchins were then sent to Europe to pursue their further studies with the French friars at Breust, Tours and Nantes. The first batch of 12 clerics had left India on 22nd June 1927, Br. Marie Egide Uhlennuth of Ajmer leading them. 2. Movement towards South and Rapid growth The absence of a strong, vibrant and populous Christian community in North India, even as the extreme weather conditions of the place called for a transfer of the novitiate from North to a more favourable location in the South. The Province of Paris was called upon to undertake this venture. The Capuchins were offered a little hill at Farangipet, called Monte Mariano, in the diocese of Mangalore and hence the decision to shift the novitiate was carried out in May 1930. Monte Mariano therefore can well be called the second cradle of the Capuchins in India. From then on the growth of the Capuchins was rapid and already in 1932 a study house was set up in Quilon and most of the students who had not yet finished their studies abroad were brought back to continue their studies there. Naming of Br. Guido Le Floch as the General Commissary in 1933 marked the next phase of the growth of the Order in India. The influx of candidates was unabated and the Order grew from strength to strength. From 1948 to 1954, Br. Richard Brunner from Calvary Province of USA was put in charge of the Indian Capuchin Mission. He was made Commissary Provincial in 1951. But already by 1954 the hands at the helms were changed and Br. Cyril Andrade became the first Indian to head the unit as Commissary Provincial. In 10 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 1956 the Agra Archdiocese was entrusted to the Order and Br. Dominic Athaide was consecrated as the first Indian Capuchin Bishop of Agra. In 1957, Br. Cassian Timmins, a Canadian Missionary from Gorakhpur was appointed to guide the destiny of the Commissariat and he guided it during the next 6 years. The number of Capuchins by now had grown from 41 in 1933 to almost two hundred in 1960. 3. Formation of an Autonomous Indian Province Br. Clement of Milwaukee, the General Minister, who had seen the growth of the Capuchin jurisdiction in India already at the time of his first visit, during his second term as General Minister paid a second visit in 1962, expressly for the purpose of constituting the Indian unit into a fullpledged Capuchin Province. Br. John Berchmans Puthuparambil was appointed as its first Provincial Minister and he was re-elected as Provincial Minister at the first elective Provincial Chapter, held in 1966. Next in 1969. Br. Jacob Acharuparambil was elected as the Provincial Minister. He was also the last of provincial Ministers of the united Indian Province as the jurisdiction had grown too big and stood in great need of a division, if only for the sake of sheer good administration. 4. Division of the Indian Province Ever since the novitiate was shifted to Monte Mariano, St. Fidelis Friary, Farangipet, the Province had seen nothing but steady and rapid growth, so much so, by the year 1967, just forty years after migrating to the South, it could count about 500 friars distributed among 40 houses in the five states of Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil 11 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 Nadu. Besides they were working also in many other States of northern India as missionaries and even in some foreign countries like Indonesia, Philippines, and Tanzania as Formators. Some had reached as far as Malaysia with a view of implanting the Order. In these circumstances, the need of creating smaller jurisdictions for the sake of greater efficiency and a better implantation of the Order in the various regions in India became not only apparent but also urgent. The first discussion to this effect took place during the Provincial Chapter of 1969. The General Minister and his Definitory, having taken note of the situation sent Br. Aloysius Ward to conduct an on the spot and a thorough study of the state of affairs prevailing in the Province during the visitation from November 1971 to February 1972. It was then followed up by the then General Minister, Br. Paschal Rywalski, himself. As a result at the end of March 1972, the General Minister and his Definitory took the important but necessary decision to dismember the Province into four units, namely – Province of St. Joseph, Kerala, Province of Holy Trinity, KarnatakaGoa-Maharashtra (KGM), Province of Amala Annai, Tamil Nadu and the Vice Province of St. Francis, Kerala. The decree to this effect, signed on 9th May 1972, was promulgated at St. Joseph’s Friary, Kotagiri, on the 17th of May by Br. Aloysius Ward, along with the names of the new Provincial Superiors and their Definitory. 5. Holy Trinity Province, Karnataka-Goa-Maharashtra The new Province of KGM was carved out of the former Indian Province of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The three states of Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra were indicated as its geographical territory. Br. Remigius Sequeira was 12 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 appointed as the first Provincial Minister of the new province with Br. Liguory Noronha as Provincial Vicar and the First Definitor. Brs. Pacificus Menezes, Irenaeus D’Souza and Vincent Lobo were the second, third and fourth definitors respectively. The General Minister and his definitory also entrusted the Agra - Lucknow - Ranchi mission to the new province as a good number of its friars were working in the mission. On 17th May 1972, the new provincial Minister and his definitory assumed charge and on that day the Province of Karnataka-Goa and Maharashtra officially came into existence. It had strength of 100 friars. The first Chapter of the Province held at Monte de Guirim in 1973 decided to dedicate the Province to the Most Holy Trinity. The second ordinary Chapter of the province, held in March 1975, re-elected Br. Remigius Sequeira as Provincial Minister. He had however a new team of definitors, namely Br. Vincent Lobo, first Definitor and Provincial Vicar, and Brs. Irenaeus D’Souza, Alphonse Malcolm Sequeira and Rudolf D’Souza. On the whole, this initial period was directly concerned with the recognition of the new identity and establishment of a stable provincial fraternity. In March 1978, at the third ordinary Chapter, Br. Vincent Lobo became the Provincial Minister with a fresh team of Definitors, namely Brs. Liguory Noronha, Irenaeus D’Souza, Evarist Ferreira and Br. Frederick Rodrigues. The fourth ordinary Chapter too held in April 1981, re-elected him once again as Provincial Minister. The Definitors elected were: Brs. Cornelius Monteiro, Evarist Ferreira, Dinesh Mendonca and Crispin Lobo. During second term the major study houses of philosophy and theology were established at Bangalore 13 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 and thus the entire formation programme began to function within the province itself. Br. Liguory Noronha was elected as the Provincial Minister in the fifth ordinary Chapter, held in May 1984. Br. Terence D’Souza was elected as the First Definitor and the vicar provincial, Brs. Theodore Pereira, Remigius Sequeira, Garcia Coutinha as the second and the third and the fourth Definitor respectively. The Provincial Minister, Br. Liguory Noronha was re-elected in the sixth ordinary Chapter held in April 1987 but was provided with entirely a new team of definitors. Br. Patrick Crasta was the first Definitor and the Provincial Vicar. The other definitors were Brs. Dinesh John Mendonca, Oscar Colaco and Rudolf D’Souza. Responding positively to the call given by the General Minister and his definitory, the province accepted for the first time a mission abroad and four brothers entered Uganda in October 1988. The new administration had also to make some immediate provision to separate the two stages of philosophical and theological formation as the number of brothers in formation at Bangalore had substantially increased. Hence the study of theology was shifted to the newly acquired place at Mysore. On 28th March 1990 during the seventh ordinary Chapter Br. Patrick Crasta was elected as Provincial Minister. Brs. Joel Pinto, Oscar Colaco, Baptist Braggs and Andrew Anil Sequeira were elected as the first, the second, the third and the fourth Definitor respectively. Heeding the urgent request, the province accepted to send a few brothers to assist the Capuchin mission of Papua New Guinea. The eighth ordinary Chapter elected on the 14th April 1993 Br. Andrew Anil Sequeira as the Provincial Minister. Br. 14 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 Remigius Sequeira was the first Definitor and the Provincial Vicar with Brs. Simon Rico Fernandes, Canute D’Costa and Evarist Ferreira as Definitors. The General Chapter of the Order held in June - July 1994 at the international college, Rome, however retained Br. Andrew Anil Sequeira back in Rome as the General Definitor and hence Br. Remigius Sequeira who was the provincial vicar succeeded him by nomination, and Br. Rudolf D’Souza was co-opted as the fourth Definitor. While the Ugandan mission saw a further consolidation, the province realized a long cherished dream of having an independent house for provincial administration at Rajajinagar, Bangalore. The ninth ordinary chapter was held from May the 1st, 1996 at which Br. Vincent G. Furtado was chosen as the Provincial Minister. Br. Patrick Crasta was elected as the first Definitor and the Provincial Vicar and Brs. Felix Ferrao, Francis Gonsalves and Andrew Rebello as the second, the third and the fourth Definitor respectively. The Chapter decided to request the General Definitory to erect independent Vice Provinces of Goa and Maharashtra. During the Triennium the province took up the mission of NorthEast India, comprising the four states of Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura and Mizoram and also began a collaborative venture with the Capuchin province of New York to develop the custody of Japan. 6. Holy Trinity Province of Karnataka On 8th December 1998 the General Definitory by its Decree Prot. No. 00999/98 constituted and declared established the Most Holy Trinity Province of Karnataka. By the same Decree the General Definitory appointed Br. 15 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 Vincent Gabriel Furtado as the new Provincial Minister, Br. John Baptist Sequeira as the first Definitor and Provincial Vicar, Br. Patrick Crasta, Br. Edwin Colaco and Br. Rudolf D’Souza as the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Definitors respectively. The inauguration of the new province took place at St. Fidelis Friary, Farangipet. The first Provincial Chapter of the new Province was held at Shanthi Sadhana, FISI, Bangalore from May 24 – 29, 1999. At this Chapter provincial Statutes were formulated and approved ad experimentum. During this triennium procedures were completed to enter into Sri Lanka Mission in order to form the students of Pakistan and also to implant the Order in the island. The year 2001 saw the celebration of the second ordinary Chapter of the province. It voted Br. Andrew Anil Sequeira as the provincial Minister. To assist him were elected Brs. Desmond Rebello, the provincial vicar, Edwin Colaco, John Baptist Sequeira and Paul Sequeira as the Definitors. The very first act of the new team was to launch the Capuchin presence in Sri Lanka with the express intention of the implantation of the Order and that of opening a novitiate house to form brothers hailing from Pakistan. The year 2004 saw the celebration of the third ordinary Chapter of the province and elected Br. Antony Jossy Fernandes as the Provincial Minister. To assist him were elected Brs. Vincent Gabriel Furtado, the provincial vicar, Henry Alva, Desmond Rebello and Joachim D’Souza as the Definitors. During this triennium the Province took up ministerial collaboration with St. Mary’s Province, New York and a new mission station in Manipur State. 16 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 The Fourth Provincial Chapter was celebrated at Kripalaya, Mysore from 16- 21, April 2007 during which Br. Vincent Gabriel Furtado was elected Provincial Minister, Br Andrew Anil Sequeira as the Vicar Provincial; Brs. Denis Viegas, Edwin Colaco and Peter Cyprian D’Souza were elected as the second, third and fourth definitors respectively. The Chapter decided to request the General Definitory to erect St. Bonaventure Vice Province of Maharashtra as a full fledged Province and to raise the mission of North East India to the status of a custody. The F ifth Provincial Chapter was celebrated at Darshan Institute of Theology, Bangalore from 12-17, April, 2010. Br.Vincent Gabriel Furtado was reelected Provincial Minister, Br. Joseph Dolphy Pais as the Vicar Provincial; Brs. Peter Cyprial D’Souza, Br. Chetan Leo Lobo and Br. Joe Francis were elected as the Second, Third and Fourth definitors respectively. One of the prominent resolutions of the Chapter was to request the General Definitory to raise the Vice province of Goa to the status of a full fledged Province. 17 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 HISTORY OF THE HOUSES OF THE PROVINCE 1. Saccidananda, RAJAJINAGAR, Archdiocese of Bangalore Ever since the Holy Trinity Province of Karnataka-GoaMaharashtra was culled out from the erstwhile single province of India, the friars have been looking forward to the realization of a Provincial House. As the history has it, the Provincialate was shifted from place to place. It was first housed at Monte de Guirim and then at Deena Seva Ashram, Bangalore. To render more effective and prompt service to brothers as well as to have an easy access, it has now found a permanent residence at Saccidananda, Rajajinagar, Bangalore. The Provincialate was inaugurated on December 29, 1995. 2. St. Fidelis Friary, FARANGIPET, Diocese of Mangalore A dilapidated chapel dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi and a tottering old building, which once belonged to the Portuguese Franciscans, was standing on the little hillock, called Monte Mariano, at Farangipet. The buildings with the adjoining compound were placed by the Bishop of Mangalore at the disposal of the Capuchins for the purpose of the novitiate house when they came to Farangipet in May 1930. The chapel was repaired and on its side was constructed the novitiate block. Until 1969, this was the only novitiate house of the Capuchins in India. A seraphic school was also attached to it until 1949. The novitiate for the non-clerical friars was shifted to Muvattupuzha (Kerala) in 1963. The Junior Professorium was conducted at Monte Mariano from 1966-70 for the non-clerical friars. After the erection of the new Province, the novitiate was brought back to Farangipet in 1973 and has continued to be there to date. In June 1978, the Initiation Course located at St. Fidelis Ashram, Lucknow, Mahanagar, on an experimental basis since June 1973, was once again shifted to Monte Mariano. 18 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 The gradual increase in the number of vocations in the Province since 1987 and the need for providing accommodation for the candidates of St. Fidelis Vice-Province erected in the North in September 1981, made it necessary to take up the construction of a new block in 1982. Presently, though the formation of the novices is the main ministry of the friars at Monte Mariano, they also render pastoral service to the parishes around. To mark the Golden Jubilee of the friary, St. Fidelis Commerce Institute with about 100 students was started in May 1982 in a rented building. The proposal for a new building to accommodate the increasing number of students of the commerce institute and the tailoring section was approved in August 1982. The building completed in 1987 now houses about 100 students. 3. St. Anne’s Friary, JAIL ROAD, Diocese of Mangalore The place, originally known as “Lawn View” and measuring 45 cents, belonged to Mr. George Lobo, a retired jailor. He gifted the place and his house to the Capuchins in May 1936, in memory of his deceased wife, Mrs. Annie Lobo. Hence the friary is named after St. Anne. Earlier the house was used as a centre for Franciscan gatherings. A hall was erected for this purpose in 1937, which served also as a chapel and eventually became the Portiuncula, dedicated to Our Lady of Angels. In 1941 the house of Mr. George Lobo was declared a hospice attached to St. Fidelis Friary, Farangipet. Some friars started staying here for the purpose of doing social work and other pastoral ministry in the town. A shrine of St. Anthony was constructed at the corner of the triangle during the same year. Since Mr. George Lobo was still living in one of the rooms of his old house and the friars needed privacy, a temporary residence was constructed behind the shrine of 19 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 St. Anthony in 1943. In 1950, after the death of Mr. George Lobo, the temporary residence was demolished and the old house of Mr. Lobo was re-modeled and the chapel was enlarged. For the purpose of promoting vocations to the Order, the Assisi House was started in 1955 in a small rented building. The compound, measuring about 2 acres, adjoining the friary and known as ‘Grasmere’, which belonged to Mr. P.C. Lobo, the brother of Mr. George Lobo, was acquired in 1960 and the Assisi House was shifted to its present premises. The old house constructed by Mr. George Lobo at Lawn View and which had housed the friars for more than 25 years, having become inconvenient for habitation, was demolished in 1977 and on the same site the new friary was constructed and completed in 1979. The students of PUC were accommodated in the Friary from 1979 to 1983. In 1983 the PUC students were shifted to the Assisi House which itself was rebuilt in the year 1967 to accommodate the increasing number of boys studying in Assisi House. From 1987 Assisi House looked after only capuchin candidates who did their PUC studies. In August 1999, Postulancy of KGM was shifted to Assisi House. The fourth Provincial Chapter of 2007 decided to have first year of Initiation and also the Provincial Infirmary in the Assisi House. A master plan was approved for this purpose. The friary has many initiatives to its credit. In early 1950’s, under the leadership of Fr. Cyril Andrade the S.F.O. apostolate began in Mangalore. Later, under the leadership of Fr. Vincent Lobo, the S.F.O. ministry thrived in Mangalore diocese. In 1943 the Konkani Natak Sabha started by Fr. George Albuquerque Pai S.J. was transferred to the Capuchins of St. Anne’s Friary. Fr. Cyril Andrade became its president. By 1951, under the leadership of Fr. Philip Neri, a good Hall, 20 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 named Don Bosco, was built and to-date the Capuchins direct the socio-cultural activities of the K.N.S. Some years later, Fr. Vincent Lobo started the Konkani family monthly magazine, “Sevak” which saw its first issue in September 1959. He also started Assisi Press in 1970 as a landmark in the media apostolate of the Province. The friars are now engaged in varied forms of apostolate: preaching, spiritual assistance to the S.F.O., promoting vocations, apostolate of the press and the stage. 4. Holy Family Friary, BRAHMAVAR, Diocese of Udupi Brahmavar has a special prominence in the history of the diocese of Mangalore because of the schism, which took place in 1887. The priests in charge of the parish at Brahmavar had worked zealously for the reunion of movement and to render pastoral assistance to the diocesan clergy in the Northern part of the diocese. The Bishop of Mangalore however entrusted the pastoral care of the parish, along with the two substations – Petre and Nilavar – to the Capuchins on 15 April 1956. They completed the plastering and flooring of the Church, which along the new belfry was blessed in April 1961. The fraternity at Brahmavar was canonically erected on 28 February 1960. The friary building was completed and blessed on 19th December 1966. A new church was erected at Petre through the efforts of the friars and by 1968, Petre was separated from Brahmavar as an independent parish, administered by the diocesan clergy. The chapel at Nilavar was built in 1967. While taking good care of the Brahmavar parish, the friars also render sacramental ministry to the neighbouring parishes, give spiritual assistance to the SFO, preach retreats and recollections to various religious and lay groups and promote vocations to the Order. 21 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 5. Darshan Institute of Theology, KENGERI, Archdiocese of Bangalore In 1965 the friars went in search of a place for a friary in Bangalore. The present site at the Valagerehalli, Kengeri area was bought in 1966. The construction of a friary was begun in 1971 and it was blessed and declared a canonically erected house in 1974. In 1976 an additional block was constructed with selfcontained rooms for the sick and aged friars. When the Orientation Course had to be shifted here from Monte Mariano in June 1980, the construction of an additional floor was taken up. In 1981 the common study houses of the four jurisdictions were wound up in favour of regionalization and inculturation. The Provincial Chapter accordingly decided to conduct the entire programme of formation of our candidates from Orientation to Theology in our own province. Deena Seva Ashram thus became the major study house for students of Philosophy and Theology and Professorium Brothers from June 1981. The Orientation Course was shifted from Bangalore to Navelim. As the number of the students of Philosophy steadily increased it was found necessary to shift the Theologate to Kripalaya, Mysore, in the year 1985. Deena Seva Ashram became the institute of philosophy and religion. Meanwhile the bishop requested that it be made a quasi-parish so as to meet the pastoral requirements of the people around especially those who steadily came to settle down in the near-by satellite town. The Capuchins took diligent care of this parish until a new parish church was built in the Kengeri Satellite Town and the Archbishop appointed a diocesan priest as the pastor in July 2002. 22 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 At Deena Seva Ashram a new auditorium was blessed on August 31, 1997. A new Chapel, Library and Dining Hall was constructed to accommodate increasing number of students. The provincial chapter of April 2007 took a historical decision to shift the present philosophate at Deena Seva Ashram to Kripalaya, Bogadi, Mysore and the theologate at Kripalaya to Deena Seva Ashram Bangalore, keeping in mind the concept of Campus Theology and also to promote the activities of Darshan Research Institute. The mutual transfer of houses took place on June 25, 2007. The theologate was re-christened as ‘Darshan Institute of Theology”. 6. St. Joseph’s Friary, LOWER KASARKOD, Diocese of Karwar When North Kanara formed a part of the diocese of Belgaum, the parish of St. Joseph at Lower Kasarkod was permanently entrusted to the pastoral care of the Capuchins in 1975, on the understanding that they would also look after the pastoral needs of five other parishes at Samsi, Kodani, Molkod, Gundibala and Binaga. Later in 1976 North Kanara became the new diocese of Karwar and the earlier agreement was slightly altered. The parishes of Samsi and Binaga were ceded to the diocese in 1981 and the friars continued to work just in four parishes of Gundibala, Kodani, Molkod and Lower Kasarkod. The latter became the centre for the entire area. In 1986, the parishes of Gundibala, Kodani and Molkod were also ceded to the diocese, retaining thus only St. Joseph’s Church, Lower Kasarkod for the friars. The foundation for the new church at Lower Kasarkod was laid on 1 May 1977 and the new Church was completed on 30 April 1979. A new house for the friars was constructed in 1990. 23 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 7. Ravi Ashram, BANAKAL, Diocese of Chikmagalur Early in 1962 two friars were working in Bhadravati in Chikmagalur diocese. They however withdrew from there in 1964. Ever since a proposal to start a new foundation in Chikmagalur diocese was under consideration. When the Bishop of the diocese offered to the Capuchins 2 acres of vacant land at Bankal for the purpose of erecting a church and a residence, the offer was gladly accepted on a permanent basis on 7 July 1973 through an agreement between the Bishop and the Provincial Minister. The parish church dedicated to Infant Mary was completed and blessed in 1975. The parish has two sub-stations, one at Javali and other at Balur. A new chapel at Balur was constructed in 1990. 8. Dayal Bagh Ashram, UJIRE, Diocese of Mangalore Dayal Bagh, begun as a farm in 1969, has grown into an Ashram today and is raised to the status of ‘Domus Formata’. At first it was started on a plot of land measuring about 5 acres in view of the social uplift of the poor villages around. Later on more land was acquired and agricultural cum horticultural work was undertaken. The idea was to make Dayal Bagh a model farm. Accordingly, piggary, poultry and dairy were undertaken as additional activities. Several developmental projects are under way since the inception of the farm. A government recognized agricultural school that began around 1980 is engaged in training young and enterprising farmers. A new residence for the friars and a nice-little chapel for worship were completed between 1979-85. The agricultural students also have their own quarters to stay at Dayal Baugh during their studies. At present the developmental activities in and around Ujire are efficiently 24 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 carried on through ‘Vimukti’ Ujire begun in the year 1996. These activities also come under the umbrella of Capuchin Krishik Seva – Kendra, a registered society. Since 1996 June Dayal Bagh Ashram is also the house of Orientation and Aspirancy along with the NIOS programme. From 2008 Dayalbagh will be housing only Aspirancy students who will do their PUC in the neighboring colleges. 9. Kripalaya, Institute of Philosophy and Religion, BOGADI, Diocese of Mysore In 1983 the Province acquired a piece of agricultural plot in Bogadi Village just outside the city limits of Mysore, close to Manasa Gangotri University. A farm house was constructed and it was named as Kripalaya and initially just two friars lived in it. When it became obvious that the Theologate from Deena Seva Ashram, Bangalore had to be shifted, in keeping with the decision of the fifth Provincial Chapter of 1984, it was decided to plan a new Theologate at Kripalaya, Mysore. In 1987, the first phase of the new building was ready for occupation and in 1989 the construction of the second phase was over. The Seminary chapel, beautifully built in Indian style was blessed in February 1992. Besides the formation work, the friars are also engaged in active apostolate in the diocese. The Hinkal mission nearby was entrusted to the care of Kripalaya, which has been given back to the diocese in 1998. Apart from the regular chaplaincy to several convents, the friars also give recollections to different communities and preach retreats to religious. According to the mandate of the provincial chapter 2007, the Theologate was transferred to Deena Seva Ashram, Kengeri on June 25, 2007 and the Institute of Philosophy and Religion was brought to Kripalaya on the same day. 25 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 10. St. Anthony’s Church, HOSANAGAR, Diocese of Shimoga At the pressing appeal of Bishop Ignatius Pinto of Shimoga, the small parish at Hosanagar, with about 350 Catholics, was accepted on a temporary basis. The Provincial Chapter of March 1990 favoured the continued presence and ministry of the friars in the parish in the diocese of Shimoga. Accordingly a wholly new church and a friary were built so as to provide good service to the people and a convenient residence to the friars. 11. Franciscan Institute of Spirituality in India, KENGERI, Archdiocese of Bangalore It all began in 1987. The inspiration of the Franciscan Institute of Spirituality in India (FISI) was that of the General Minister and his Definitory. Holy Trinity Province of KarnatakaGoa-Maharashtra was to respond actively by taking a bold step of initiating and implanting the FISI Project under the supervision of CCMSI. In the realization of the same the province has the full backing of the General Definitory. 9 acres of land belonging to Deena Seva Ashram has been gifted by the Province for this purpose and the implementation of the project has quickly picked up. Many courses in Franciscan Spirituality and Charism had meanwhile been organized all over India under the aegis of FISI. Many more programme are being chalked out, thanks to the collaboration of the friars from all the capuchin jurisdictions in India, including the Friars Minor and some women Franciscans. The institute was solemnly inaugurated by Most Rev. Fr. Flavio Carraro, the General Minister and blessed by Most Rev. Dr. Alphonsus Mathias, the then Archbishop of Bangalore, on 7th Dec. 1993. Since this institute has been entrusted to our province for its ordinary administration, a team of friars reside there since June 1993. 26 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 12. Clara Vihar, POTNAL, Diocese of Bellary The diocese of Bellary, represented by Bishop Joseph D’Silva, formally invited the Capuchins of the Holy Trinity Province to open a house anywhere in the diocese, through his letter dated 5 May 1993. After a spot study of various places, through his letter dated 11 October 1993, Fr. Andrew Anil Sequeira, the then Provincial Minister, communicated the decision of the Provincial Definitory, expressing willingness to take up Potnal in the district of Raichur. In the month of May 1994, the Provincial Definitory assigned two friars Fr. Mark Saldanha and Fr. Jerald Lobo as the first capuchins to Potnal Mission. These arrived in Bellary on 5 June 1994 and proceeded to Potnal, to be accommodated in the Jawalgera farm of the diocese. The diocese then entrusted to the Capuchins of Holy Trinity Province, the 10 stations of the Potnal Mission territory, viz., Mudengudi, Karabdinni, Jeenur Camp, Donmaldi, Jeenur, Tadakal, Dotharabandi, Udbal, Markamdinni, and Belavatta, which hitherto formed the parts of the Jawalgera parish, for the spiritual and pastoral care of the people of God. The diocese also placed at the disposal of the Capuchins the diocesan property situated at Potnal village measuring 9 acres and 15 guntas. The Provincial Chapter of May 1996 decided to house the Post-Novitiate formation of the brothers at Potnal. A new structure suitable for this stage of formation was put up and was blessed on October 30, 1999. It was named ‘Clara Vihar’ and the Post-Novitiate formation commenced in the house. The Friars pay special attention to the developmental activities in the near by villages of Potnal through ‘Vimukti’. 27 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 13. Prem Nivas, GANGONDANAHALLI, Archdiocese of Bangalore The Capuchins of Deena Seva Ashram had been rendering pastoral services in the substation of Gangondanahalli since 1975. The Archdiocese of Bangalore, represented by the Archbishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Arokiasamy, formally requested the Capuchins to take care of the pastoral needs of this area, as one of the substations of Kengeri quasi-parish, by his letter dated 3 November 1982. A Kannada medium school, dedicated to St. Anthony was opened soon thereafter in a small hut with cement sheet roof. The area has seen a rapid development even as the development of the parish and school. A church and school building along with the residential quarters were constructed by the Capuchins on the land donated by Mr. M. Joseph and were inaugurated and blessed by Rt. Rev. Dr. Alphonsus Mathias, the then Archbishop of Bangalore, on 31 October 1993. Earlier it was erected into a full-fledged parish and entrusted to the Capuchins ‘ad perpetuum’ through an agreement dated 25 August 1993. The St. Antony English School started by the Friars is making good progress. 14. Christalaya, CHIKKODI, Diocese of Belgaum The Holy Rosary Church, Tumarikop, in Belgaum diocese, was entrusted to us for pastoral care, due to some insoluble problems. It was however handed back to the diocese in July 1997 after resolving the problems to a very great extent. As the bishop Bernard Moras desired that the Capuchins continue their work in his diocese, another place, namely, Chikkodi was accepted by us to continue our serviceable presence in the diocese. At Chikkodi, our presence is purely missionary, as there are no Catholics around. Since November 1997 we have been residing in a rented house and while 28 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 doing social work through ‘Vimukti’. They also cooperate with the diocese in various developmental projects. A new school has been just begun in view of meeting the educational needs of the place. Asha Kiran, BHADRAVATI, Diocese of Shimoga Noticing the need of a rehabilitation centre for deaddiction of alcoholics and substance abuse persons, a beginning was made at Kengeri in the year 1994. As the land that housed ‘Asha Kiran’ was notified by the Bangalore development authority, the healing ministry had to be shifted. It was decided to transfer the same to Bhadravati where the Capuchins had a small stretch of land. With the generous help of Swiss Capuchin province and International Office of Solidarity a friary as well as the centre became a reality. It was inaugurated on November 14, 2001. It is envisaged that the fraternity while carrying on the ministry in the rehabilitation centre, shall also involve itself in pastoral work in the entire diocese of Shimoga. 16. Anugraha Gurumatha, HALBARGA, Bidar, Diocese of Gulbarga The diocese of Mangalore under the leadership of bishop Aloysius D’ Souza invited the Capuchins in the year 2000 to actively involve themselves in the mission of Bidar district which the diocese itself had been looking after for almost two decades. On accepting the invitation we were offered the mission of Halbarga along the Bidar-Latur road in order to carry out spiritual ministry in the district of Bidar. The process of establishing our presence was initiated by the purchase of a piece of land to establish our ‘mission house’. The ground floor of the Friary was blessed on 30th May 2007. The Provincial Definitory has decided to construct the first 29 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 floor and establish the formation stage of Postulancy in the Friary. 17. Assisi Vihar, SHIRVAD, Diocese of Karwar There was a long awaited plan to open a second house in the diocese of Karwar and efforts were on to find a suitable place convenient for the friars to render the pastoral assistance to the diocese and meet the spiritual needs of the religious of the diocese. A central school was planned and dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity A Friary with the name Trinity Vihar is also planned. The initiative was from St. Anne’s Friary and the land is registered under The Mangalore Capuchin Friars Minor Society. The place is suitable for SFO spiritual assistance, vocation promotion 30 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 and pastoral ministry in Udupi District. The primary school building was blessed by Most Rev. Assisi Nilaya, MOODUBELLE, Diocese of Udupi The Aspirancy or the PUC college studies were well planned in Dayalbagh Ashram, Ujire as the Brothers could attend Anugraha college in Ujire. But the diocese terminated the PU course suddenly and hence we had to find an alternative place for Aspirancy. The ad hoc commission appointed for this purpose, proposed the building owned by Mudartha Charitable Trust in Moodubelle as suitable for our purpose. An agreement has been drawn for ten years for the use of the building. Meanwhile, the trust donated one acre of land across the street. The candidates attend PUC in St. Lawrence PU College at Moodubelle. 21. Infant Jesus Nivas, KADRI MIDRI, Diocese of Chikmagalur The Bala Yesu Nivas at Parvatipura in Chikmagalur where we had a friary since the year 2000 was taken back by the Bishop on 28th April 2010. The Province had purchased 12 acres of land in Kadri Midri in 1999 for the purpose of a school. Since the Bishop took back the Friary, we planned a school building in our plot and the friars shifted to the new place in April 2010. The new school building was inaugurated by Provincial Minister, Br. Vincent Gabriel Furtado on 19th June 2010 and blessed by the Bishop of Chikmagalur. It was started as a centre for psycho-spirituality and counseling. The ground floor was inaugurated by Br. John Corriveau, the General Minister of the Order and blessed by Most Rev. Bernard Moras on 9th June 2006. Meanwhile, the new idea of BBM and B.Com was proposed by the Capuchin Education Board. The BBM course began in July 2009 and B.Com in July 2010. In order to get sufficient number of students for the above course, the CEB decided to establish PUC under the name ‘St. Anthony PU College’ which was officially inaugurated by the Br. Small shed was constructed and inaugurated on 20th December 2012 by Provincial Minister Br. Vincent Furtado and blessed by Most Rev. Dr. Anthony Swamy, the Bishop of Chikmagalur in the presence of the several friars. The location being along the highway between Hassan and Mangalore, there are good possibilities of developing the place into an effective Capuchin presence and a good centre of pastoral ministry in the Dioceses. 32 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 24. St. Sebastian Church, Gardadi, MADANTHYAR, Diocese of Mangalore When the new Diocese of Udupi was announced, the only Capuchin Parish of Mangalore Diocese went to the new Diocese and hence the suggestion came up that we should apply to the Bishop of Mangalore for a new Parish in the Diocese. The Bishop responded positively and offered St. Sebastian Parish at Gardadi, which was so far the sub-station of Madanthyar Parish, to the Capuchins of Holy Trinity Province for 25 years. The Parish was officially handed over to the Capuchins on 6th October 2013 by Most Rev. Aloysius Paul D’Souza during the Eucharist in the St. Anthony School Premises, Madanthyar. In 1998 the new church was blessed and inaugurated by Archbishop Pascal Topno S.J. 26. Vianney Sadan, BHOPAL, Archdiocese of Bhopal In 1987 after having decided to accept Madhya Pradesh as its mission territory, the Province sent three friars at the invitation of the Archbishop Eugene D’Souza. They made Seva Sadan at Tulsi Nagar as their residence. However as the Archbishop required Seva Sadan to conduct his own minor seminary, our friars had to move out and find a new shelter in a rented house at Nehru Nagar. A portion of Seva Sadan parish was entrusted to them for pastoral care. With a view to building a friary, a parish church and a school, 10 acres of land was purchased at Barkhedi Khurd at a distance of 4 km. from Nehru Nagar. The distance made the immediate realization of the plan impossible and hence another plot of land was purchased at Nehru Nagar itself and a prayer hall cum residence was constructed, named after St. John Mary Vianney. It is now raised to the status of a parish. The Capuchin presence was established at Lazami on 10th July 1996 in the diocese of Kohima by Br. Vincent Gabriel Furtado, the Provincial Minister. An agreement was signed to this effect on April 15, 1998. The Lazami community, which was a substation of Tsemenu parish, was given an independent status. It is now a parish under the patronage of St. Francis of Assisi, with three substations, a high school and a hostel for boys. 36. St. Peter ’ Church, ATOIZU, Diocese of Kohima, Nagaland On July 27, 1997 the new Bishop Jose Mukala introduced the Capuchins to a new parish, namely St. Peter’s Church, Atoizo. It has three substations, viz. Akuluto, Zunheboto and Aghunato, and two upper primary schools. The Bishop has agreed to hand over to us the Akuluto Mission on a permanent basis. We have purchased a piece of land on June 12, 20007. A friary and a school is being planned there. Presently the mission is looked after by the friars from Atoizo. 37. St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, CHOITHAR, Archdiocese of Imphal Manipur Manipur is the part of North East mission entrusted to us capuchins of Holy Trinity Province of Karnataka. Lack of 40 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 personnel prevented us in venturing into action in this State. The efforts were on to open a house in the vicinity of Imphal and the then Archbishop of Imphal Most Rev. Joseph Mittathany was constantly knocking at our door. Through the intervention of Br. Jossy Fernandes the new Archbishop Most Rev. Dominic Lumon offered us Choithar mission through an agreement dated March 31, 2007. Our Friars reached the place on 1st July 2007 under the leadership of Br. Joel Rosario and the scholastic Br. John Bosco. This mission station was declared as a full fledged parish on 14th October 2007 by His Grace Most Rev. Dominic Lumon, in the presence of Rev. Fr. Vincent Gabriel Furtado the provincial minister and Br. Augustine Claude D’Souza who was installed as the first parish priest of this mission station. ST. PIO DELEGATION OF SRI LANKA The Sri Lankan mission began with the idea of the international solidarity of the Order gathering its momentum. At the request of the then general minister Br. John Corriveau, who made a personal plea to the provincial minister and his Definitory to assist the Vice Province of Pakistan in the formation of the novices in Sri Lanka, the provincial minister, Br. Vincent Gabriel Furtado, met the Archbishop of Colombo to see to the implementation of the proposal. The Archbishop in his letter dated February 8, 2001 gave the written permission to establish a religious house of the Order in his Archdiocese. An agreement between the Archdiocese of Colombo and the Holy Trinity province of Karnataka was signed on May 27, 2001. It envisaged the implantation of 41 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 the Order and the opening of a novitiate house to form brothers hailing from Pakistan. Initially the TOR brothers in Sri Lanka agreed to put at the disposal of the Capuchins their house in Katuwapitiya for this purpose. This house, named as Padre Pio Ashram was canonically established as the novitiate house by the general minister on June 28, 2001 at the request of the then provincial minister Br. Andrew Anil Sequeira. Br. Liguory Noronha was the first Novice master who began the Novitiate with 7 novices from Pakistan. The Provincial Chapter of Holy Trinity Province, Karnataka held from 16 – 21 April 2007 resolved to raise the mission of Sri Lanka to a Province Delegation. Accordingly the General Minister raised the Sri Lanka mission to a Delegation through his letter dated : The Provincial Definitory appointed Br. Norbert D’Souza as the first Provincial Delegate and Bros. William Andrade and Joseph Francis as his councilors. 38. Padre Pio Nivasa, Colombo, Srilanka PALLANSENA, Archdiocese of As the friars were living in the rented house offered by the TOR brothers at Katuwapitiya, the need was felt to have a house of our own. A plot of land with an existing house was purchased at Pallansena and the Novitiate was shifted from Katuwapitiya to the new plot. When the new Friary was inaugurated in Mawila, the Novitiate was shifted there on a permanent basis. The Pallansena is being used from September 2007 as a centre of formation for Postulants. 39. St. Pio Friary, MAWILA, Diocese of Chilaw, Srilanka The need for a permanent Novitiate house was felt very much and hence the friars purchase a piece of land in Mawila, 42 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 Nathandiya, three kilometers from the Colombo – Chilaw highway. Through the assistance of Belgium Province a beautiful Novitiate House was constructed and inaugurated on September 8, 2007. The house was canonically erected by the Provincial Minister Br. Vincent G. Furtado through the decree dated 2 August 2007. General Minister Br. Mauro Johri erected the Novitiate House through his decree dated 11 September 2007. 40. St. Francis of Assisi Capuchin House, AMPITIYA, Diocese of Kandy, Srilanka The Agreement with the Province of Belgium and the Vice Province of Pakistan and the Holy Trinity Province of Karnataka envisaged the philosophical formation of brothers from Pakistan to be held in the National Seminary at Kandy. The Brothers stayed for one year in a rented house belonging to Caretians and then succeeded to purchase a small house nearer to the National Seminary. As this place too was not found convenient, a new plot at 32 Meekanuwa Road was purchased with the help of finances from the Economic Solidarity and the Province of Belgium. The new house of Philosophy was blessed by Most Rev. Vianney Fernando, the Bishop of Kandy and inaugurated by Br. Vincent Gabriel Furtado the Provincial Minister of Karnataka on February 6, 2010. CUSTODY OF JAPAN 41. Japan Mission The early days of catholic mission activity in Japan go back to the time of St. Francis Xavier (1549). Due to various upheavals, the Catholic faith did not sink very deep in the 43 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 Japanese soil. In 1930 the Canadian Franciscans came to Okinawa, the island in the southern part of Japan, but were not allowed to proselytize. In 1935 the Japanese military government forced all foreigners to leave Okinawa in preparation for World War II. In 1947, Rome assigned the post-war protectorates of Amami Oshima and Okinawa Island chain, then called Ryukyu Islands, to the Capuchin province of St. Joseph which covered Detroit & New York. At the request of the Holy See, two American Capuchins, Brs. Felix Ley and Alban Raymond Bartoldus arrived in Amami Oshima, north of Okinawa, on September 5, 1947. When Amami Oshima was repatriated to Japan around 1949 the Capuchins concentrated their missionary efforts in the Okinawa Island chain. When the Capuchins arrived in Amami Oshima after World War II they were met by an ex-seminarian, who later became the first Bishop of the Naha diocese of Okinawa. In 1949 Br. Felix Ley was appointed administrator with the title of Monsignor. He became the titular bishop in 1968 until the day he died in January 1972. In 1951 the the Capuchin General invited other missionaries to take over ministry in Amami Oshima. The first American Conventuals arrived in 1952 and by 1955 they had taken over the full responsibility for these islands north of the Ryukyu Islands. Since 1955 the Capuchin responsibility was limited to the southern Ryukyus, the area the present diocese of Naha. In January 1972, when the Ryukyu Islands were repatriated to Japan and became the new Japanese Province of Okinawa, Rome also established it as a new Japanese Diocese of Naha. Br. Peter Baptist Ishigami, the 44 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 first Japanese Capuchin was appointed the first bishop of the new diocese of Naha, Okinawa. After the split of the Province of St. Joseph to form the new Province of St. Mary for New York/New England, the territory became this new Province’s Mission, though some from the separated province of St. Joseph continued to serve in their missionary work in the islands of Okinawa. At the custody chapter of 1997, it was decided that the future of the Capuchin presence in Japan required them to renew their efforts to expand outside of Okinawa. The Provincial of St. Mary’s province and the General Minister appealed to Holy Trinity Province for personnel and the custody of Japan welcomed the willingness on the part of the Holy Trinity province to collaborate in this effort. The Provincial Minister Br. Vincent G. Furtado visited Japan in December 1997 and studied the situation in preparation to send the friars. In January 1999, Bros. Claver and Alex from the Holy Trinity Province joined the Capuchins on Okinawa as pioneers of the new Japan Custody Cooperative. Two years later, on September 25, 2001, a 2nd batch of friars, Bros. Edwin and Denis, arrived on Okinawa. In May 2000, Bros. Claver, Alex and Wayne, an American friar, moved out of Okinawa to begin ministry in the Saitama diocese, then called Urawa diocese, and to establish the first Capuchin fraternity in the mainland, in fulfillment of the decisions of 1997 chapter. There are six friars from the Province working in Japan. Based on the spirit of collaboration, as agreed upon, the Holy Trinity Province will maintain a presence of 10 friars in the custody of Japan by 2012. 45 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONS, SECRETARIATS AND BOARDS A. CHARLES LWANGA CUSTODY, UGANDA The challenge to the Indian Capuchin Provinces to undertake missionary commitments outside their country was first addressed to the Provincial Ministers by Br. Roberto Carraro, the General Minister and his Defmitory through a letter dated July 12,1986. On its part the Provincial Chapter of Karnataka-Goa-Maharashtra celebrated in April 1987 firmly resolved to opt for mission abroad. At the meeting of the Conference of Capuchin Major Superiors of India in June 1987, the Ugandan territory fell to the lot of K.GM. Province. On June 24,1987 Br. Liguory Noronha, the Provincial Minister, sought permission from the General Minister for the K.GM. friars to move into Uganda. In his letter dated September 27, 1987 (Pro, No. 01447/87) the General Minister decreed: “that the territory of Uganda be assigned to the Province of the Most Holy Trinity of K.GM. and that steps be taken for an eventual Capuchin presence in that nation, blessed by the blood of martyrs...” The necessary formalities being completed, the first batch of four brave missionaries set out for Uganda in January 1988. Accepting the invitation of Br. Gandolf Wild, the Vice Provincial of Tanzania and realizing the advantage of becoming familiar with the Capuchin way of life in the African perspective, they first landed in Tanzania to spend a few months with the friarsoverthere. The auspicious day to set foot on the holy soil of Uganda had come on October 1,1988 the feast of St. Theresa of Child Jesus, the patroness of the missions. With the sad memory of the tragic yet sacrificial death of Br. Walter 110 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 Saldanha on March 31, 1988 in a road accident still lingering in their minds, the three friars moved into the Diocese of Kiyinda-Mityana. A three-phased programme was chalked out as a minimum long-term goal to be attained by the friars in Uganda: i) Establishment of a community and service to the local church; ii) Focus on vocation promotion; and iii) Working out a formation programme. The implantation of the Order in Uganda has been the general intention of the Capuchin presence there. Ever since the Mission of Uganda has grown and It deemed fit to raise this mission to the status of a Custody. Everything being in favour of this, the General Minister with his Decree (Pro. No. 00587/97) established the presence of Holy Trinity Province of K.G.M. in Uganda to the status of Custody of the same Province with effect from August 2. 1997. By the same Decree the General Definitory appointed Br. Lawrence Dilraj Sequeira as the Superior Regular, Br. Gerald Pancratius Pinto as the First Councilor and Br. John Dinesh Mendonca as the Second Councilor. The First Elective Chapter of the Custody was held from July 25-28, 2000 at Mirembe Br. Lawrence Dilraj Sequeira was elected as the SuperiorRegular with Brs. William and John as the Councillors. 1. St. Joseph’s Parish, BUSUNJU, Diocese of KiyindaMityana On November 1, 1989 the Bishop of the Diocese of Kiyinda-Mityana entrusted the friars with the care of the Parish of Busunju. This is the first fraternity established in 111 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 Uganda. The Diocese is spread over an area of 11,965 sq. kms., with a population of about 700,000 of whom 49% are Catholics, 38% are Christians and 13% Muslims. The parish of St. Joseph was specially carved out for the Capuchins. The area of the parish is about 100 sq. kms. and it has 11 sub-parishes. The fiercest battles were fought in this area which was badly damaged during the prolonged war. The people, who had fled during the war, are now returning and rehabilitating their farms and houses. Besides pastoral work, another task of the friars is to revive the confidence of the people in themselves and in God, and assist them in their gigantic task of rehabilitating their homes and property. The friars also look after the Government Aided Primary School attached to the parish and run St. Francis Senior Secondary School. 2. St. Theresa’s Church, KAKIRA, Diocese of Jinja When the second batch of 3 friars moved into Uganda in January 1991 raising their number to six, the friars moved into the Diocese of Jinja. OnMarch4,1991 the kind Bishop of Jinja entrusted to the Capuchins the pastoral care of St. Theresa’s Church at Kakira. The Diocese of Jinja is about 80 kms to the southwest of Kampala. It is predominantly an industrial area. Hence it is more thickly populated. The parish of St. Theresa in Kakira is a well-established parish, run by the Mill Hill Fathers. It has about 11,000 Catholic population. About 50% of the adults are employed either in the local sugar factory or in its sub112 DIRECTORY 2013-2016 sidiaries. The parish has 15 sub-parishes spread over an area of about 200 sq. kms. 3. Mirembe Novitiate House (Portiuncula), KABBEGA, Diocese of Kiyinda-Mityana With a view ‘‘to forming Ugandan Capuchins on Ugandan soil’’ vocation promotion and formation programme began to take shape along with other pastoral and developmental activities. After a stay of five years, the friars started the process of recruiting the native vocations in 1994. To begin with, there were 4 candidates and a postulant that year. The formation house at Mirembe, blessed on August 2, 1994 has since begun to accommodate the candidates recruited for the Order. The Novitiate was canonically established on June 25, 1996 and the first batch of novices started their religiousformation. 4. Padre Pio Friary, KABULAMULIRO, Kisubi, Arch-diocese of Kampala Along the Kampala-Entebbe Highway, the Cardinal of Kampala donated a land to the Capuchins. Here, a house for the Postulancy has been constructed. There are plans to make the residence of the Superior Regular, here in the nearfuture. 5.
