2014 Annual Report - De La Salle North Catholic High School
2014 Annual Report De La Salle North Catholic High School Equipping Students For Life > <> DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report De La Salle North Catholic Is Equipping Students for Life When students climb the steps of De La Salle North Catholic High School each morning and are greeted by a teacher or a staff member, many carry backpacks, both literally and figuratively. We view our work as the privilege to first unload their metaphorical backpack; to shake off the burdens of challenging lives and enter our close-knit community of faith, love and support. Only then can we undertake the responsibility entrusted to us of filling those backpacks again. With open hearts and minds, students can receive the many tools they need to rise above their circumstances and achieve their dreams with an excellent education. <> DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report 1 President’s Letter Dear Friends of De La Salle North Catholic, It is often said that you cannot go home again. Well, I have just proven that the opposite is true. After departing as the head of De La Salle North Catholic’s Development Department in 2008, I have returned in my new role, as President, and am more excited than ever to work tirelessly to help this remarkable school thrive. I believe that all of us owe a huge “thank you” to Mr. Matt Powell, our outgoing President. The history of the school began when he opened the doors to our old building on N. Delaware in 2000 and discovered a space that had been unused for years and needed plenty of TLC before welcoming its inaugural class of freshmen. From that day forward, he dedicated his life to not only starting a new high school but also fostering it into the well-respected place of faith and learning it is today, a place where we can fully equip students for life. And he was able to count on all of you to be an integral part of this mission every step of the way. For those who have been with us since the beginning, thank you. And for those who have joined us during our journey, thank you as well. My hope is that we will continue to inspire you to support our work of providing a faith-based, quality, collegepreparatory education for the incredible young people that walk through our doors every morning. Tim Hennessy President <> DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report Our Mission De La Salle North Catholic High School prepares young men and women for college by providing a rigorous, faith-based education emphasizing math, science, and language arts. More than 95 percent of our graduating seniors earn acceptance to college each year. Located in north Portland, Oregon, De La Salle North Catholic is racially, spiritually, and culturally diverse. We offer a private, college preparatory education to urban students from low-income families with limited educational options, turning no one away due to an inability to pay. We’re known as “The School That Works,” because our students are employed one day per week in a unique Corporate Internship Program in which they earn money to finance 50 percent of the cost of their own education. We anchor our work to the interconnected, faith-based bodies that influence our school: the faith traditions, support and framework of the Portland Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church, the relational style and charism of the De La Salle Christian Brothers, and the guidelines and structures of a Cristo Rey Network School. De La Salle North Catholic is a member of the nationally recognized Cristo Rey Network of schools providing quality Catholic education in urban communities. Member schools apply a rigorous academic model supported with effective instruction and an innovative Corporate Work Study Program. Being part of a national network provides us with access to national student data tracking systems and support for best practices. <> DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report 3 The Families We Serve – Together In 2000, the De La Salle Christian Brothers were inspired by their mission of service and education for low-income children to sponsor a new school–De La Salle North Catholic High School. Our singular goal is that every student graduates from high school, prepared for college and a future full of hope and possibility. We accept all capable, motivated, and interested students with a broad range of abilities, regardless of whether they can pay tuition. • Families cannot enroll at De La Salle North Catholic if their family income is more than 75% of Portland’s median income • The average annual income for a family of four at De La Salle North Catholic is $34,000 • 85% of our students receive financial aid to attend • 72% of students receive a full scholarship • Our tuition is less than one-third the cost of other Portland private Catholic high schools 4 DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report <> The Students We Serve–Together Student Demographics Female: 57% Male: 43% Black/African American 30% Hispanic/Latino 33% white/Caucasian 19% Multracial 11% Asian 4% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander 1.5% Other 1% American Indian/Alaska Native .5% Roman Catholic 41% Christian (non Roman Catholic) 47% Other/Unknown 12% Urban students, like ours, often lead turbulent lives that are both difficult to imagine and to pair with educational achievement. They may experience challenging family situations, food and housing insecurity and weak educational preparation for high school due to lower socio-economic status. Yet, these students are sincerely welcomed and valued at De La Salle North Catholic High School–and are achieving great things! • De La Salle North Catholic’s student body is richly diverse in terms of race, culture, ethnicity and religious background • 81% of our students are a racial minority • 60% of our student body is eligible for federal free and reduced price meal programs • Students enter De La Salle North Catholic an average of 1.5 years behind in high school readiness due to lack of preparation in reading and math <> DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report 5 The De La Salle North Catholic Difference – Preparation De La Salle North Catholic High School immerses underserved students in a positive and challenging environment. To reach grade level at the outset, students who are behind take foundation classes to address gaps in their academic skills. To proceed beyond to academic achievement, they are engaged with small classes and individual attention in a studentfocused, supportive environment. We offer: • Academic summer school, foundation classes, and after-school tutoring for students who need it • 68% of faculty have an advanced degree • Average class size: 24 • 17:1 student/teacher ratio • De La Salle North Catholic employs one college counselor & two full-time student support counselors 6 DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report <> The De La Salle North Catholic Difference – Rigor & Opportunity We challenge students at De La Salle North Catholic High School. No matter what level they are at when they arrive, we work with each student to motivate them to achieve their potential. We offer: •A cademic rigor and high expectations, underpinned by excellent teaching • Appropriate challenges and classes for high-achieving students plus appropriate college-preparatory curriculum for students at ALL levels • Leadership opportunities through our Lasallian Youth Ministry program, community service outreach, athletics, and student clubs, such as Constitution Team and Heritage Club <> DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report 7 The De La Salle North Catholic Difference – Tracking and Relationships How do our students achieve so much, even with the frequent challenges of their life circumstances? The founder of the De La Salle Christian Brothers believed that to educate a child, one needed to touch their heart. At De La Salle North Catholic High School, we continue this heritage; we KNOW our students. • Academic Level Teams for each grade meet on a weekly basis and discuss their classes and students, identifying areas of concern and creating a plan to address them • Students form a host of strong adult relationships in their time at De La Salle North Catholic – with teachers, staff, Corporate Internship Program supervisors, club moderators, or coaches–allowing them the opportunity to seek help and mentorship when the need arises • Small classes create a close-knit, family-like community; no matter their background, heritage, or situation, De La Salle North Catholic students find acceptance and support 8 DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report <> Equipping Students for Career and Workplace Success A unique aspect of De La Salle North Catholic High School is our Corporate Internship Program. Each day, a quarter of our students are off-campus, working at a job in the corporate world from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. As part of “The School That Works,” every student develops personal responsibility and confidence, acquires valuable work skills through direct experience, learns to navigate complex organizations, and helps fund their education. Employers fill needed jobs and experience increased workplace diversity, mentorship opportunities for staff, and tangible community impact. • Each student works five days a month in an entry-level white collar position • Incoming De La Salle North Catholic students participate in a two-week, summer training program to prepare for their Corporate Internship Program placements • A four-student team provides the equivalent of one full-time employee for the school year • Each student finances 50% of the cost of their education • Each student gains the equivalent of one full year of work experience by graduation • In the 2013–2014 academic year, our paid corporate internship placements generated more than $1.8 million toward financing our school <> DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report 9 Equipping Students for High School Success The outcomes of our college preparatory and work-study program are remarkable. De La Salle North Catholic High School students, on average, begin high school one or more grade levels behind national academic standards and may face significant economic, family and social challenges. Yet, they achieve remarkable educational results in spite of these odds. • The Class of 2014 earned more than $6.4 million in scholarships • Students earned three prestigious full-ride Gates Millennium Scholarships (the only school in Oregon with that distinction), a national Horatio Alger Scholarship, two full-ride Act VI scholarships, and a full-ride scholarship to Columbia University, among others • 50 out of 74 students earned at least one scholarship to college; 68% of the class • The Class of 2014 boasted three salutatorians and five valedictorians 10 DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report <> Equipping Students for College Success As a member of the Cristo Rey Network, De La Salle North Catholic High School has access to the National Student Clearinghouse tracking program, so that we can monitor the student achievement and educational outcomes of our alumni. So far, the results are fantastic! • 83% of graduating seniors have enrolled in college, nearly 2x the rate of peers with similar backgrounds and demographics • 77% of De La Salle North Catholic alumni return to college for their sophomore year, which is 2x the national average • De La Salle North Catholic alumni are 3.5x more likely to earn a Bachelor’s degree within 6 years (compared to students with similar backgrounds and demographics) <> DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report 11 Together, We Equip Our Students for Life This mission simply cannot be achieved without you. Our work to provide a high-quality, faith-based college-preparatory education to low-income children who cannot afford to access it takes the prayers, work, and financial support of many, many individuals and groups. • While our families contribute what they can in tuition and fees – this provides less than 10% of our budget • Funds received from our Corporate Internship Program Sponsors provide about 45% of our budget in any given year • Gifts from individual, foundation and corporate donors provide the resources for the remainder of our budget We – the students, families and staff of De La Salle North Catholic High School – are truly grateful for your contributions. 12 DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC 2014 Annual Report <> 2013-2014 Corporate Internship Program Sponsors Aequitas Capital Management Andersen Construction ARA Boora Architects Bonneville Power Administration Catholic Charities Crafts Americana The Campbell Group CH2M HILL Columbia Sportswear Cosgrave Vergeer Kester Expeditors Fortis Construction Goodwill Industries Grand & Benedicts Green Zebra Grocery Guardian Real Estate Services Hart Wagner Helen Bernhart Bakery HDR Engineering Inc.
