Want the simplest way to play? Put down $0.50 or $1 and choose five numbers from 0-9. Ask for a
“straight” bet – that means the numbers you choose will pay when they are drawn in exact order.
Here are a few play-style options when you’re ready to learn more.
• A straight bet: When the numbers you’ve chosen are drawn in exact order, you win.
• A boxed bet: If the numbers you’ve chosen are drawn in any order, you win.
Note: The number of possible combinations in a boxed bet varies, depending on the numbers you choose.
You don’t need to know the number of combinations to play, but if you are interested, you’ll see that
information on the bottom of your ticket: Here’s the scoop:
120-way
boxed bet
occurs when the 5 winning numbers
drawn are all different numbers
Example:

60-way
boxed bet
occurs when there is a pair (2) of 1
number and 3 different numbers.

A back up bet. This is for players who want the best of both worlds
– a straight and boxed bet combination. It costs $1 and this type of
wager can be played in $1 increments.

In August 2014, a fire in the laundry of TJ’s Grocerette turned
the Rockford convenient store, gas station and restaurant
upside down.
The telltale sign – steaming store windows – was noticed by
an observant neighbor in the early morning hours Aug. 18,
2014. A container weighed down with used cleaning towels
spontaneously caught on fire. The fire gutted the kitchen and
hallway, and for three months, the store closed to repair the
damage, clean and repaint. The owners, Joyce and Tom Oliver,
reopened the business the day before Thanksgiving.
TJ’s Grocerette: back in business. “Whether it’s a

come in and pick their own numbers,” says Joyce Oliver,
owner of TJ’s Grocerette. The Lottery benefits her business
by bringing traffic to the store, interesting customers in

more Lottery game choices now too, with Cashword and Bingo
its most popular instant games. On the draw game side,
customers seem to like Mega Millions, Powerball and Classic
Lotto.
The event changed the way the

at their store. It also reinforced
their commitment to the Rockford
community.
It can take a while for new
employees to learn all the games,
but once they do, they’re off and
selling. Joyce says that Lottery
games bring in a lot of customers.
“People were happy to get the store
open again and get back into their
routine,” says Joyce. The employees
-- there are 18 – stayed. And when
an employee of the grocery store
across the street and her family lost
their house in a fire in early 2015,
Joyce made sure she helped.
Her response to retailers

“I had to,” she says. “I understood
what they were going through.”
“I’d say ‘yes, do it,’’’ she says.
