WELCOME TO EGYPT
City of Cairo
Founded in the site of babylon near the ruins of ancient Memphis,
Cairo has been the largest city in Africa for centuries.
Modern Cairo encompasses many former cities and their monuments: the
pharaohs; early Christian monasteries and churches-, and mosques of the
Momlouk.
5000 years of culture are concentrated in the world’s largest open-air
museum at the center of the three continents. Travel through time in a city
that is a living index to civilization.
Cairo, was described by Lithgow, 1614:
"This little world, the great Cairo... the most admirable and the greatest
city seen upon the earth... the microsmus of the greater world".

WORKSHOP
Leadership in Psychiatric Services
Director:
Dr. Rehab Khalifa (UK)
Background:
Psychiatric leadership is fundamental to services, and to ensuring safety, clinical
effectiveness and improved patient experience. It is clear that psychiatrists need to be
involved in service management and development, thus improving health for all.
Development of leadership and management across all specialties and grades within
psychiatry is essentially important and need to be a growing process. In my role at the
College and the Trust, I focus on key areas including education, networks, engagement and
developmental programs and initiative. All psychiatrists should play an important leadership
role in their teams and organizations. Leadership is about setting high standards, motivating
and supporting colleagues and delivering high quality care for our patients. The most
successful medical organisations are those in which doctors take clear leadership roles.
Insights people development programmes are simple and deeply insightful. They
provide immediate impact and enable positive, lasting change Insights’ programmes
are:
• Simple: easy to understand so everyone can apply what they learn
• Universal: they speak to everyone – your whole organisation will be captivated by
the Insights’ magic
• Deeply Insightful: take you places you never expected
• Positive: our supportive language is so engaging it empowers people to change
• Fun! The memorable colour energy system that really sticks
This workshop will provide an opportunity for you to know more about your leadership style,
your main points of strength and your best ways to influence others

SEMINAR
How to Choose your Future Partner
Leaders
Prof. Ahmed Saad
Moderators
Prof. Menan Abdel Maksoud
(ASU)
(ASU)
Background:
Some studies on marriage and divorce in Egypt show that a couple files for divorce every
six minutes, with a third of marriages breaking up in the first year. Courts across Egypt rule
on 240 divorces each day, as stated by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and
Statistics. Nevertheless, many who stayed married are trapped in unhappy marriages. "All
conflicts are the result of unrealistic, uncommunicated or unmet expectations" explains
Aaron Stern. If you are already married, these should highlight areas to openly discuss with
your spouse. What are your expectations in each of these areas? If you disagree, how do
you intend to work things out? If you are unmarried, look at these as things to discuss with
your fiancée before starting marriage in order to work out some ground rules before jumping
in without clear expectations. Don’t wait until you get married and then realize that while you
had always wanted 10 children your spouse doesn’t want any. Preparing for your marriage,
good choice of your future partner and clear discussion of your expectations, early and often
will go a long way to strengthen your marriage.

SKILLS TRAINING
Communication and Social Skills Training
Director
Asst. Prof. Soheir El Ghonemy
Dr. Maissa Eid
(ASU)
Background:
Communication skills are intended to reach an understanding, resolve point of difference, and gain
advantage in outcome of dialogue. In fact, the communication is only successful when both the
sender and the receiver understand the same information. Moreover, Assertiveness is a way of
thinking and behaving that allows a person to stand up for his or her rights while respecting the rights
of others. Holding these skills tight would improve communication between people and certainly
would be reflected in daily life and future aspects of each individual adopting those skills. In spite of
recent increasing importance placed on communication and assertive skills, many individuals
continue to struggle, unable to communicate their thoughts and ideas effectively – whether in verbal
or written format. This inability makes it nearly impossible for them to compete effectively in the
workplace, and stands in the way of career progression and even their personal life. Thus, the ability
we can understand and manage ourselves effectively and to have better awareness of others, their
feelings and meanings of their interaction with us is of great importance for effective communication
and this was recently recognized as Emotional Intelligence (EI). EI is proved to be essential for every
successful life aspects.
Objectives: To understand the challenges in successful communication and the importance of
learning and developing own EI.
By the end of this session attendants will be able to:
1. Define Emotional intelligence and recognize its importance.
2. Gain positive attitude towards the effectiveness of EI and communication skills.
3. Recognize Assertiveness between traditional assumptions and legitimate rights.
4. Identify communication process.
5. Distinguish barriers for effective communications.
6. Identify the impact of good EI on the social life aspects
7. Learn how to improve own EI for successful communication.

A changing world a changing profession:
professionalism and clinical practice

(ASU)
Background:
The world we are living in; is changing fast and so is our medical profession. Globalization,
digitalization, the blast in technologies and, telecommunication have been reflected on
medical practice and healthcare services. Yet, the need for a human doctor cannot be
spared.
Professionalism; comprising values, attitudes and behaviors to serve patients' interests
before one's self interests is part of medical practice that once used to be caught during
apprenticeship. Nowadays, with the increased need for accountability and legality,
professional skills must be taught and assessed. Moreover, Professionalism practice is an
organizational direction.

Prof. Amany Haroun
(ASU)
Dr. Tim Sleeven
(USA)
Background:
Addiction is a primary, chronic and progressive brain disease which encompasses not just
the abuse of substances but also a number of destructive and addictive dopamine
reinforcing behaviours. Behavioral therapies for substance use disorders (SUDs) and
disruptions to aspects of impulse control and attention have been hypothesized to contribute
to the development and maintenance of addiction; moreover, alterations in these processes
may underlie responses to treatment. fMRI demonstrated changes in neural systems
involved in cognitive control, impulsivity, motivation and attention especially anterior
cingulate, inferior frontal gyrus and midbrain at post-treatment relative to pre-treatment.
Different modalities of cognitive behavioral therapy includes motivational interviewing,
contingency management, community reinforcement and residential rehabilitation.

This workshop will highlight recent updates and cognitive behavioral skills in substance
abuse.

WORKSHOP
Recovery from Childhood Abuse:
Trauma Focused CBT
Panel of Experts
Dr. Ibrahim Elkalla
(Mansoura Univ.)
Dr. Dalia Asfour
(Mansoura General Hospital)
Background:
How can abuse affect the psychological and emotional lives of Human beings?
Psychological impact of childhood abuse could be devastating, its effect can run through the
entire adult life of the survivors, Pain and sham could leads them to keep their abuse
covered for years. Researches have demonstrated that living in the shadows of abusive
environment in fact alters the physiology of the brain as: children and adults with histories of
child abuse often respond excessively to minor triggers. They become increasingly
responsive to relatively minor stimuli as a result of decreased frontal lobe functioning, and
increased limbic system (amygdala) sensitivity, decreased hippocampal volume, a smaller
corpus callosum, and modulation of neuro-endocrine axis that controls the perceiving and
responding to stressful life events. These alterations in normal brain functions make the
survivors of childhood abuse more vulnerable to alcoholism, drug abuse, depression,
suicide attempt; and personality disorders. Trauma focused cognitive-behavioral therapy
(TF-CBT), is an evidence-based treatment approach shown to help survivors to overcome
trauma-related difficulties either as children or an adolescent exposed to childhood trauma.
It is designed to reduce negative emotional and behavioral responses following child sexual
abuse, domestic violence, traumatic loss, and other traumatic events. The treatment based
on dealing with distorted cognition and attributions related to the abuse. Therapy provides a
safe environment to encourage the survivor to explore the traumatic experience, recognize
and narrate through it by verbal, written, or symbolic recounting of abusive events, and
reprocessing of inaccurate thoughts and beliefs about the abuse, and to develop skills to
gain back control over his or her life. Time suggested for the workshop: 2 hours: 30 minutes
for the theoretical part. One and half hour for practical skills for intervention, clinical
approach, related videos sessions.
Objectives of the workshop: To illustrate psychology of abuse.
• To apply psychotherapeutic intervention for different stages of the cycle of abuse.
• To understand clinical techniques of trauma based cognitive psychotherapy.\
