Senior Class of 2013 Pages 2-3 Volume 17 | Number 2 | July 2013 Educational Travels Page 8 Drama & Musicals Page 15 School news, information and events Announcement from the Fairhill School Board of Directors After a long and illustrious career guiding Fairhill School from start-up to prominence among LD schools, Jane Sego, Executive Director, has decided to retire. Jane will join her husband Bill, already in retirement, at the end of this academic year. When the school first opened the doors to students in 1971, Fairhill offered classes for grades 1 through 8. The Upper School was added in 1977, graduating its first senior class in 1981. Steady growth stimulated an expansion move from the original location on Churchill Way to the present campus on Preston Road. The new, larger campus enabled Fairhill to grow in areas and activities previously constrained in the original location Over the years, electives and honor programs were added along with expanded athletic programs and facilities. Today, Fairhill is a premier college-preparatory school for bright students with learning differences. Jane’s guidance, dedication and passion have indeed guided Fairhill to a high academic level, capable of educating the whole student. During her time at Fairhill, Jane also assembled and mentored a top-notch team of qualified, caring educators and administrators. This group, like Jane, is passionate about the work that they do and make Fairhill the great institution that it is today. The Fairhill School Board of Directors has selected one of these capable administrators, Carla Stanford, to replace Jane following her retirement. Carla is uniquely qualified to assume this role. She began her service to Fairhill in 1979 as a teacher and became Head of Lower School in 1994. She has been Assistant Director since 2008. Carla holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from The University of Texas Dallas and will receive her Masters in Educational Administration from Texas A&M University Commerce in December. Jane’s retirement will be effective August 31, 2013. Carla will assume the position of Executive Director, Fairhill School, effective September 1, 2013. We greatly appreciate Jane’s dedicated and distinguished service to Fairhill and wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement. The Board looks forward to Carla Stanford taking up the Executive Director position and continuing the enrichment of Fairhill and the Fairhill experience. Roy Pendergrass, Chairman To honor Jane’s years of service to Fairhill, the school is accepting donations to the Fairhill Scholarship Fund in her name. This fund provides financial aid to qualifying students who benefit from a Fairhill education. The graduation ceremony, held at Bentwood Trail Presbyterian Church, began with the procession of the proud seniors. Following the procession, Matthew Bagley, class Salutatorian, welcomed parents and guests and presented the invocation. Andrew Bitterman, class Valedictorian, presented his Valedictorian address to the class. Mr. Wade Mercer, Director of Technology, introduced the commencement speaker, Fairhill alumnus Max Golman. Max is a 1993 graduate of Fairhill and a graduate of the University of Arizona. (See article on inside page) Max presented an entertaining and heartfelt speech. He encouraged graduates to “Play to Win” and presented a pen inscribed with that motto to each graduate. Max also recommended that the class take skills learned at Fairhill with them. Some of the points he emphasized were: be organized; to thine own self be true; sit in the front row in college; go to the professor’s office and make yourself known! At the conclusion of the ceremony, the new graduates exited the church to throw their caps in the air! A reception was hosted by the junior class parents to honor the graduates and their families after the graduation ceremony. Scarborough Faire School Days Wyatt McReynolds, Katie Gorman, Emily Plunket and Jenna Smith were swinging high in the giant swing at Scarborough Faire! Each year seniors attend School Days at Scarborough Faire, a renaissance festival in Waxahachie. Students experience 16th century life in Britain. Accompanied by teachers Jennifer Allen and Jo Prees, seniors gather for photos on the beautiful grounds of the faire. Some of the activities included glass blowing, acrobatic shows, and of course, eating those wonderful turkey legs! Fairhill parents, friends, alumni, board members, and staff enjoyed a delicious Hawaiian dinner, dancing and music to the sounds of Jolie Holliday and her band. The David M. Crowley Foundation The David M. Crowley Foundation recently provided a generous grant of $20,000.00 for the expansion of the Fairhill School technology program. The grant was given in honor of 8th grade student, Jared Harrell, son of Amber and Sam Harrell. The grant is being used for the implementation of an Ipad program for grades eight through twelve. Ipads, apps and cases for teachers as well as other equipment necessary for the implementation of the program are being purchased. Wade Mercer, Director of Technology, held an inservice session to train teachers in using the new iPad applications.Teachers Jane Hood, Lissa Dallas, and Angela Kwong are receiving instruction. Creative Minds Creative Communications Creative Communications, an online writing competition, offers both essay and poetry contests each fall and spring. The contests are highly competitive, as they are open to all students across the United States. In the fall, Mrs. Allen’s English students entered poems they wrote for class. Congressional Art Competition Amber Yen won the grand prize in the Congressional Art Competition in Congressman Pete Sessions’ District 32. She was honored at a reception at the Art Institute of Dallas on April 30. Her artwork will be showcased in the corridor leading to the U.S. Capitol building for the next year. As the Grand Prize recipient, Amber will travel to Washington, DC for the National Congressional High School Art Competition Award Ceremony in June. Devon Taylor proudly displayed her medals and ribbons for her award winning artwork at the annual end of the year art banquet. Molly McKeehan won Best of School for her photograph, “Turtle Face-Dewees”, in Congressman Michael Burgess’ District 26. Annie McRae won Honorable Mention for her photograph, “Cable View” in Congressman Sam Johnson’s Third District. Molly and Annie were being congratulated by Betty Sue Finnell, art teacher. Educational Travels Texas Road Trip Seventh graders enjoyed an educational “road trip” in the spring. Much modern day government in action, history and entertainment greeted the students as they traveled through parts of Texas. Highlights of the trip were: the Capitol in Austin, Natural Bridge Caverns, the Alamo, Witte Museum, Sea World, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, Washington on the Brazos, San Jacinto, Battleship Texas and NASA in Houston. The seventh grade Texas Road Trip would not be complete without a stop to tour the Alamo! Hayden Strong almost hit the bull’s eye in the Archery Class! Outdoor School Fifth and sixth graders had a wonderful experience at the Outdoor School in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Educational activities included: water quality studies, birding, studying rocks and minerals, archaeology, hiking, swimming, archery, climbing and kayaking. Students learned cooperation skills as they worked in teams studying animal habitats and well as conservation techniques. It was a fun filled trip loaded with memories! As Tanner Puckett was getting ready for the High Ropes Challenge Course, he was given support from Christopher Randall and Hasan Shaikh at the Outdoor School. Ali Stevens, Chloe Bibler, Wells Hamby, Nikki Myrin, Hannah Warmbrodt, and Peyton Escher stopped for a photo while touring the Battleship Texas. Eight and ninth graders stopped for a group photo while touring the Presidential Memorials in Washington. In the background is the George Washington Memorial which is undergoing repairs from damages caused by an earthquake. Fairhill Band During Spring Break, Fairhill band members performed at Keystone Resort in Colorado. The band performed outside in 25 degree weather at the base of the ski area. Band members and their families also enjoyed skiing, snowboarding and tubing all week long! Sarah Tillery participated in the concert at the base of the mountain. Annie McRae and John Baltzer were ready to do an etching to honor servicemen and women at the Vietnam Memorial. Washington, D.C. Trip Eighth and ninth graders experienced a historical learning adventure in Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area. The group toured over thirty-five American monuments and museums including the Smithsonian complex, war memorials, presidental memorials, Capitol Hill, Library of Congress and the Supreme Court. Like other groups who have made this trip in the past, the changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetery was a favorite stop. The group traveled outside D.C. to tour Monticello, the University of Virginia and Mount Vernon. Entertainment included a performance at Ford’s Theatre and the National Zoo. In and Around Fairhill… Fifth graders found a spot on the athletic field to have a picnic and enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers with their families. Earth Day Celebration and Dads’ Cookout Classes worked on Earth Day activities while dads were busy putting their culinary skills to work at the grills. Families enjoyed eating on the beautiful grounds of the Fairhill campus. Class of 2002 Randy Bruski has been promoted to IT Client and Mobile Solutions Administrator at Brinker International located in Dallas. Former Falcon Max Golman came to Fairhill in 1987 as a 7th grade student and graduated with honors in 1993. After Fairhill, Max attended the University of Arizona, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications. After Arizona, Max moved to San Antonio to begin a career in the adult beverage industry, specifically in the field of sales and marketing. Over the past 15 years, Max has excelled in the industry, gaining experience in nine different strategic roles/positions held in four different major markets, which prepared him for his current role as Texas Package Chain Director of Pinnacle Spirits and Wine for Glazers Distributors. Max has been recognized in the industry for his aggressive and creative marketing practices and has gained the respect of his colleagues and peers for his exceptional work ethic and salesmanship. Max is very proud of his professional accomplishments; however, he is most proud of fulfilling his dream of creating his own business based on his love of dogs. In 2005, he opened a multiple service pet business, Lucy’s Doggy Day Care and Spa inspired by his dog Lucy. In 2011, a second Lucy’s location opened in downtown San Antonio. Between both Lucy’s locations, the team consists of over 60 employees and can accommodate up to 450 dogs at any given time. Both locations have won multiple accolades in the San Antonio area. Max is often asked how he handles a full time career while also being a successful business owner. He truly believes that his ADHD is actually his greatest strength and is what has enabled him to juggle both his full time job responsibilities and his entrepreneurial dream. “I thrive on having multiple projects occurring at once. Fairhill instilled life skills and an organizational foundation, which I still implement personally and as I coach team members on a daily basis,” he says. When Max thinks back to his days at Fairhill, he remembers not only the fantastic education he received, but also, the amazing support and values learned from the teachers and staff which have made him the man and business owner he is today. Brandon Bonicard received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in General Studies from the University of North Texas in 2008 and a Master’s Degree in Project Management from DeVry University in 2012. Emily Gilles Atwood is Sales Manager at the Hilton Dallas/ Rockwall Lakefront. Class of 2007 David Wills is continuing his studies at Shor Y’shov Institute for Jewish Studies in Far Rockaway, New York. He will be earning a Master’s Degree in Talmudic Law. He has also started his own karate studio. Class of 2009 Class of 2009 Michael Alford graduated Summa Cum Laude from Austin College with a Bachelor of Arts and Science in Business Administration and Environmental Studies in 2013. Class of 2009 Andrew Stribling received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from The University of Texas at Arlington in 2013. Sarah Vint received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Accounting and a minor in Finance from Oklahoma State University in 2013. During her four years at OSU, she was a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, honors and service fraternity and a member of the Delta, Delta, Delta sorority. Sarah was Treasure of the sorority. She maintained a Non-resident Academic Scholarship during her four years at OSU. Last summer she studied abroad at Regent’s College of London on an academic scholarship from OSU. Sarah is planning to attend Graduate School at OSU pursuing a Masters Degree in Accounting. Jake Walnick graduated from Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts in 2013. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications with a concentration in film. Class of 2010 Chris Krueger played the role of Sergeant Slim in “The Inspector General” at Benedictine College this spring. He is also on the production arts crew. Isaiah Williams was recently honored at Dallas Baptist University Honor’s Day Program. He received the E. E. Widner Scholarship and the Minnie K. Patton Scholarship. Isaiah will be a Senior in August and plans to apply for a Master’s Program in May, 2013. Class of 2011 Tina Vint made the President’s Honor Roll and the Dean’s Honor Roll at Oklahoma State University. She is involved with her sorority, Tri Delta and has also joined the professional business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi, and the leadership and honors organization, Sigma Alpha Lambda. Stephanie Sims has completed her first year at Stephen F. Austin State University. She has been inducted into Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, a national interdisciplinary honor society which recognizes academic excellence among first-year students at colleges and universities across the country. Stephanie has also been invited to join the Honors Program and is on the Dean’s List. She is on the SFA bowling team which qualified for the USBA Collegiate Nationals in April. Former Students Class of 2012 Hunter Harty is attending Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas where he is majoring in sports management/ marketing. He reported that his first year of college was great! He is a member of the Tabor Bowling Team. He learned to manage his time and studies to keep up with his classes. His mentor helped him with his classes and tests. Hunter has made many good friends and looks forward to returning to Tabor in the fall. Drew Rossow has completed his first year at University of Dayton Law School. He is clerking for a judge in Dayton, Ohio where he is writing case opinions that determine outcomes in trials. Drew is pursuing a career in Intellectual Property Law and/or Ethics and Compliance. Honors English Metaphors Jennifer Allen, Honors English teacher, shared an article with her class in which organization and efficiency of cities was compared to an elephant. This was a perfect place for the Hawaiian Paradise theme. Guests entered a room transformed into a beautiful luau setting. The event included a casino, raffle prizes, caricature artist, photographer, and dancing to the music of a great DJ. Prom King Matthew Bagley and Queen Rickie Huang were crowned with unique Hawaiian adornments made by Jennifer Kimbrell. Cole McCandless, Adrian Kimbrell, Tim Cheatum, Basha Rubenstein, Austin Hain, and Trevor Malloy were risking their luck at the casino table.
