M O N T R É A L MONTREAL CHAPTER #155 V O L U M E 3 # 1 0 8 / 0 9 / 2 0 1 2 N E W S L E T T E R PROGRAM 2012 / 2013 Tuesday September 25 at 1:00 o’clock Place: Mountainside United Church THE FACE OF IKEBANA For our first meeting of the year, we welcome the professional photographer Mr. Jean Tremblay who will teach us some important tricks in order to take better photographs of our ikebana arrangements. Representatives of four schools, Truus R. Chapman (Ohara), Anne Herbatuck (Ikenobo), Jocelyne Lebasseur (Sogetsu) and Josiane Girard (Koryu Shotokai), will prepare ikebana arrangements which will serve as models during the photo workshop. At the end of the season, each member will be able to participate in a collective exhibition displaying their best photo. Bring you cameras. The members of the board will assist you and will prepare tasty treats to accompany your tea. Tuesday October 30 at 1:00 o’clock Place: Japanese Pavilion CHIGIRI-E: THE ART OF PAINTING WITH PAPER For our October meeting, Sonia Dandaneau and her team will welcome us as the Japanese pavilion. One of the facilitator of the pavilion will initiate us in the Japaneseart of Chigiri-E. A workshop will follow. All material will be supplied (paper, glue and cardboard). On the same occasion, we have the opportunity to view the marvelous paper exhibition<<Paper Beyond Words>>on Japanese paper and works of CHIGIRI-e. At tea time, we will pay tribute to a long standing member, a past president who has always stayed active and appreciated by all, Mrs. Mary Chancer. Tuesday November 27 at 1:00 o’clock Place: Mountainside United Church NOTEBOOK OF THE TRIP TO THE COUNTRY OF IKEBANA AND A WINTER SPARKLE Mrs. Lynne Williams, head of the Ohara school in Montreal, will relive her trip to Japan last spring where she participated in the Ikebana convention. A demonstration of the Ohara school entitled <<Dream School of Winter Sparkle>> will be done by Lynne Williams, Helen Palazy and Monica Sheppard. Tuesday December 11 at 12 o’clock (noon) Place: Mountainside United Church IKEBANA IN LIGHT AT CHRISTMAS After we enjoy our Christmas lunch, Mrs. Nilophar Hussain, teacher of the Sogetsu school will present a demonstration and conduct a workshop consisting of Christmas arrangements containing candles in the pure tradition of the holidays. For the workshop: bring a low vase, kenzan and scissors. The plants and candles will be supplied. A fir tree will be decorated with stars by our members and will surround the gourmet Christmas table. Each one will be able to take a star and decorate the fir tree (a maximum of 4 inches/10 cm). Happy Holidays! Tuesday January 29 at 1:00 o’clock Place: Mountainside United Church THE ART OF CAPTURING THE INSTANT For our first meeting of year 1013, we offer a workshop to introduce you to haiku, a short Japanese poem. To accomplish this, we are welcoming Mrs. Marie-Claire Laberge, facilitator of the writing workshop, who will teach us the technique of haiku. She will direct the workshop whereby each one will create a haiku inspired by an ikebana arrangement. This exercise will help us at our annual exhibition in April where we will create a short poem to accompany our arrangement. For this meeting two arrangements, one modern and one traditional will be done by Satoko Ueno, sensei of the Koryu Shotokai school. This will inspired our writing. The materials for the haiku workshop will be supplied (paper and pencil). Tuesday February 26 at 1 o’clock Place: Mountainside United Church IKENOBO SCHOOL in the 21ST CENTURY Ikenobo is the oldest schools of ikebana. Recently the Ikenobo school celebrated its 550th year. Mr. Raynald Donais, sensei of the Ikenobo school, will present a few arrangements showing today’s Ikenobo school. A workshop will follow whereby participants will create the Jiyuka (free style) inspired by the demonstration. Bring a vase of your choice, a kenzan and scissors. Floral material will be supplied. Tuesday March 26 at 1 o’clock Place: Mountainside United Church IKEBANA ON YOUR PLATE At our March meeting, two of our members, Madeleine Murphy and Lorraine Desjardins will initiate with pleasure, the art of adding beauty to our plates. The transformation of our plates and tables will be created with the addition of fruits and vegetables. A workshop will follow the demonstration. Bring scissors, a little kitchen knife and a cutting board. All remaining material will be supplied (plants, fruit, vegetables, and toothpicks). For this occasion, we will take particular care to include your creative pieces on the presentation of our tasting table. Friday April 19 from 7 until 9 o’clock Place: Japanese pavilion of the Botanical Garden of Montreal ANNUAL EXHIBITION «VOICE OF THE FLOWERS» April is the month that we anxiously await our annual reunion of the exhibition at the Japanese pavilion. This year’s theme is <<Voice of the Flowers>> which is the joining of poetry (Haiku) with flowers (Ikebana). This combining of words and flowers will add a very poetic dimension to our spring exhibition. Like previous years, one section will be reserved for miniatures. As well, demonstrations from different schools will be offered to the visitors. Tuesday May 28 at 1 o’clock Place: L’Espace 64 at 64 Prince Street in Montreal IKEBANA PHOTOGRAPH EXHIBITION To complete the year in beauty, we will invite you to a vernisage of our ikebana photographs. From our September meeting, each member was invited to present one ikebana photograph (8X10inches 20X25cm) so as to participate in our May photograph exhibition. This will also be the occasion to elect our new board of directors for the 2013-2014 season and to share this delicious meal at the end of this wonderful season. Guests who wish to join will be welcome.
