SPRING INTO SAFETY
Safety tips for weekend yard work warriors
The cold temperatures did not want to go away. But spring is
finally here, and you can’t wait to get your yard back in shape.
You may have big plans for the great outdoors, but make sure
that you take the proper precautions. You may think it only happens to the other guy, but yard work mishaps injure thousands
of people every spring. A few simple safety tips can ease the
strain and reduce your risk of injury.

June 16, 2016
10am - 9pm
On June 16, Jubilee Day returns to the
streets of downtown Mechanicsburg. This
year marks the 88th Annual edition! Don’t
miss your chance to be exposed to nearly
70,000 attendees from across the midstate.
Booth space is available at a discounted
rate for Chamber members. Contact the
chamber for an application.
Volunteers Needed!
Wed, 6/15
5:30 - 8PM
Thurs, 6/16
6 - 8:30AM
3:30 - 7:30PM
8AM - Noon
7 - 10PM
11:30AM - 4PM
Dress for Safety
• Be sure to wear proper shoes. Forget the flip-flops. They
won’t protect your feet from debris or give you proper foot support in the yard.
• Long sleeves and pants can help protect you from poison ivy,
cuts and other dangers lurking in the bushes.
• Protective gloves with a nonslip surface will help you grip tools
and prevent blisters. They also provide protection from thorns
and sharp objects.
• Safety glasses or goggles are especially important. Wear
them when operating machinery like weed trimmers, lawnmowers, and leaf blowers. They protect your eyes from flying debris
and reduce the amount of pollen that can irritate eyes.
Warm Up
Remember to protect yourself by warming up with a few stretches before you begin working. Your muscles will thank you for it.
Start with a short walk to loosen the muscles, followed by a 5
to 10 minute stretching session. This will help prevent injury to
your back, legs, arms, shoulders and neck.
Take Your Time
• Be sure to pace yourself. Take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water. Proper hydration is important for your muscles and
general good health.
• Plan the most strenuous tasks for early morning and evening
when it may be cooler.
• Avoid straining muscles by rotating tasks to avoid repetitive
movements.
Proper Lifting and Bending
Save your aching back. Remember to bend your knees and
use your legs when lifting heavy items. Do not just reach out
with your arms. Lift that bag of mulch straight off the ground
by bending your knees and keeping your spine straight. Avoid
twisting your body and get help if something is too heavy to lift
alone safely. Also, remember that kneeling is easier on your
back than bending over for long periods of time. Use knee pads,
or sit on a garden stool to ease unnecessary stress on your
back.
Protect Your Skin
• Don’t forget to use sunscreen to prevent sunburn.
• Hats and long sleeves can also protect you from some of the
sun’s rays.
• Bug spray can help keep mosquitoes and ticks at bay.

Neema Hospitality Announces
Partnership With Clean the World
Recycled Hygiene Products Will Save Lives Around the World
Discarded soap and bottled amenities left behind by
guests at all Neema Hospitality (www.neemahospitality.com)
hotels now have a second life thanks to a recycling program
from Clean the World (www.cleantheworld.org) that helps fight
the spread of preventable diseases.
Used soap and plastic amenity bottles from the hotel’s 1000+ rooms are shipped to a Clean the World Recycling
Operations Center, where they are sanitized and repurposed.
Clean the World’s simple mission is to recycle hotel soap and
save lives. The organization has partnered with more than
4,000 hotels and resorts to put life-saving hygiene products in
the hands of those who need them most.
“After visiting Costa Rica last summer and seeing all of
the conservation efforts that take place in hotels there, I knew
I had to come back and help make a difference with our properties. One of our properties found Clean the World through
their partnership with Hilton and we decided to roll it out to all
Neema Hospitality properties this year prior to Earth Day,” said
Sandeep Thakrar, President of Neema Hospitality.
About 2 million children under the age of 5 die every
year due to hygiene-related illnesses. Hand washing with
soap is a low-cost intervention that can reduce those deaths
by almost 50 percent. Since 2009, Clean the World has distributed more than 31 million bars of soap in over 100 countries.
"Sustainability is a major focus for hotels," said Shawn
Seipler, CEO and co-founder of Clean the World. "We estimate the North American lodging industry throws away more
than a million bars of soap each day. By recycling soap and
bottled amenities, Neema Hospitality is having a positive effect
from both an environmental and humanitarian perspective."
