The show is a mixture of art portfolio projects from grades 9-12,
which was completed under the direction of art teachers Dina
Rose, Michael Jablonski, and Tiffany Pelczar. The Mattituck
art students consistently produce quality artwork in diverse
mediums and styles. The art faculty is passionate and committed
to inspiring and encouraging students to foster their innate sense
of creativity and imagination.
The exhibition will include
drawings, paintings, ceramics,
and digital photography, and
will feature artwork from
students who participate in
NYSATA Art Portfolio.

Take A Chance! — Each of our exhibitors has generously donated a piece of their art to raise funds for the Library.
You can support this effort by participating in The Friends’ Art Raffle at the Circulation Desk. Each artist’s work will
be on view at the Library during the month of their show. Tickets are only $1 each.

Photography by Sylvan R. Martin
Sylvan Martin earned an A.A.S. degree in graphic
design from SUNY Farmingdale. He is also a
professionally trained chef, having graduated
from the New York Restaurant School in
Manhattan. When not found in the kitchen,
most of his time is spent shooting photos. Sylvan
describes photography as an art where the camera
is a paintbrush. “Always take your time, let the
image come
to you. All
you have to
do is look
around you,
our world is
full of art”.

Bev’s Book Beat
“Reading . . . a vacation for the mind . . .” – Dave Barry
Dave Barry’s quote is one I agree with heartily. When I pick up a book to read, I
can’t wait to find out where it’s going to take me.
Since I don’t plan on going there myself, I loved going to
Mars in Andy Weir’s The Martian. The research Weir did
was right on according to NASA; how Mark Watney survived
being “King” of Mars using his background as a botanist was
amazing.
James Lee Burke’s first book, In the Electric
Mist with Confederate Dead introduced
me to Detective Dave Robicheaux of New
Iberia, Louisiana. The title really got my
attention and I have been a fan of Burke ever since. This is a
good read if you enjoy murder mysteries set in the South.
Louise Penny took me to Three Pines, Canada, in her Gamache
series, Still Life. There I got to hang
out with Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and a group of
marvelous characters. As much as I would like to live in Three
Pines, in that town, you end up either a murder suspect, the
murder victim, or a murderer.
The Gabriel Allon series, by Daniel Silva, is one of my favorite
series. It began with The Kill Artist and
has continued with his latest book, The
English Spy. I love “tagging” along with
Allon, and his group of spies–both international and his own
personal group from Israel–as we travel the world putting a
stop to terrorism and crime.
When I read The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and
Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics
by Daniel James Brow, the history was wonderful, from
how a boat was made to all the grit and rigor of collegiate crew rowing. I never
realized how much it took to crew on a boat. This was a
multi-level biography of the eight boys, from the University
of Washington, who were on the Olympic team that won the
gold in Berlin. Even though you know the outcome, you find
yourself cheering them on.
Alison Weir does great British history,
both fiction and non-fiction. Mistress of
the Monarchy: The Life of Katherine
Swynford, Duchess of Lancaster is one
of my favorites. The course of English history might have
been very different without Lady Katherine. Thanks to events
during her time, her descendants would end up on the throne
of England. If you love British history, pick up any book by
Weir and take a trip back in time.
Like science fiction? Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series are fun.
Beginning with Storm Front, we meet Harry Dresden who
is a private detective and a professional wizard in Chicago.
When black magic, strange disappearances, and horrific
murders occur the police always turn to Harry. Since Harry is
a wizard, you can only imagine who, or what, helps him out
in his investigations.
Give your mind a “vacation” by losing yourself in another
time, country or sphere. Your passport is the pages of a good book. Enjoy!
Happy Reading!

Everything About Music
That Isn’t Notes . . .
Sunday, March 6, 2:00 p.m.
Co-sponsored by the Friends of the
Library
Music is a language. It has meaning
that is contained in elements other than
the notes. Articulation, feel, technique,
rhythm, listening, phrasing, space, tone and
dynamics, are some of those other elements.
Come listen to the Hidden City Orchestra
as they use these elements to make good
music great.

centuries.
Sunday, May 15, 2:00 p.m.
Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library
An exciting all-star collaboration of veteran musicians
from the 1960’s through the 1990’s, Neal Stuart and

come together to pay
tribute to the breadth
and depth of the music
of the late, great Johnny
Maestro, a New York
star who provided
the soundtrack of a
generation.
