We are eagerly awaiting your arrival on
campus in October.
This will serve as your orientation guide for
the weekend as well as a guide to the city and
upcoming events. During orientation you will
move-in, register, participate in placements,

Students may apply for on-campus employment
upon arrival to AMDA. Many first semester students

Students who choose to work while in school can
work part-time, no more than 20 hours per week
while classes are in session. Due to the intensive
nature of the program, students should realistically

of AMDA, it is important to find a job that offers a

REQUIRED ATTIRE FOR CLASSES
Specific attire is required for certain classes depending on the class activity. Students must maintain a neutral
appearance for all classes. You will receive a “Day One” sheet on the last day of orientation that will list the required
attire for the first day of class. Jeans, body jewelry, logos (other than AMDA), and extreme hair coloring are not
appropriate for any class at any time. We suggest that if you are unclear about the dress code for class, wear
professional audition attire. For workshop and performance days, you will provide your own costumes and props.
DANCE ATTIRE
All students are required to have the appropriate dance attire. Below you will find the attire items required for
each program for women and men. Colored tops or bottoms may be permitted in class, but only at the teacher’s
discretion. On the first day of class, be sure to follow the guidelines on the “Day One” sheet and your teacher will

The AMDA’s Performing Arts Library is an innovative

professional goals by providing enhanced access to

premier cinematic performances, and assisting in job
placement and individual professional development.

including over 75,000 individual pieces of sheet music,
6,000 play scripts, nearly 1,000 piano/vocal scores, 800
songbooks, 900 musical librettos, 300 screenplays, 2,000
audio recordings, 2,000 video recordings, and numerous
source materials, biographies, autobiographies, reference

the AMDA Library for all students, staff, faculty and alumni.

AMDA STUDENT STORE
The AMDA Student Store is located at the 61st Street
building on the third floor and offers an array of items
such as textbooks, AMDA apparel, dance wear, and
food. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner items including salads,
sandwiches, baked goods, and microwaveable meals are
delivered fresh daily. A wide assortment of beverages
and snacks are also available. Lockers, which are located
on the 3rd floor of the 61st Street building, can be rented
for $15 per semester. Replacement student identification
cards are obtained from the Student Store for a $10
fee. The AMDA Student Store has partnered with AMC
to provide discount movie tickets to students, which
normally retail at approximately $14 each. Discount movie
passes are available for $7.50-$9.00 each, are only valid
at AMC/Lowes theaters, and are limited to 2 passes per
student per day. The AMDA Student Store accepts cash
and all major credit cards.

HEALTHCARE
SERVICES
Health insurance is recommended for all students due to our rigorous
programs. All medical diagnosis and treatment options must be found
outside of AMDA, as we do not provide onsite health care professionals.
Most health plans will allow dependent children to continue coverage until
they reach age 25, and sometimes longer. Dependent coverage is typically
more affordable than participating in a plan as a primary member. If you
chose to have coverage, it is advisable to be proactive and make contact with
a doctor in your network prior to the start of school, as most medical needs

Urgent Care Manhattan is located just a few blocks from AMDA’s Stratford
Arms and Ansonia buildings and AMDA has a personal relationship with their
two primary doctors. This new facility, which is open 7 days a week, is ideal for
treating common illnesses, injuries and a wide variety of minor emergencies;
it is also fully equipped with x-ray machines and other equipment necessary
for immediate evaluation. Their health care services are affordable without
insurance but they also take most major insurance providers too.
AMDA also has a direct relationship with the NY Counseling Center
which takes most major insurance providers, but will also work with AMDA
students without insurance on a sliding scale. The Ryan Center is also a
great community resource for those with medical needs without insurance.

Crime in NYC has declined in record numbers over the past decade or so, making NYC one of the safest big
cities in the U.S. In addition, the Upper West Side (where all four of AMDA’s NY campus building are located)
is one of the safest neighborhoods in the entire city.
AMDA is committed to continually updating security measures to ensure that all persons using our facilities are as free as
possible from threats to their safety and/or well-being. In accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security
Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and related amendments to education law, AMDA notifies current and
prospective students and employees of these regulations by way of an annual Department of Security and Safety Report,
the Student Handbook and other related documents. The Department of Security and Safety prepares this report to

• When traveling to and from the 61 Street building, we
strongly advise that you travel in groups, particularly
at night. When leaving for the evening, make sure
your friends are aware of your destination and the
time that you are expected to return.
• When taking the subway after normal hours, wait for
the train at the “off hours” designated area. These
areas are often in view of the token booth clerk. When
getting on the train, particularly at night, use the first
car of the train which is manned by a train engineer
or fourth or fifth cars, which are usually manned by a
conductor. Do not use the last car of the train.
• Secure your cell phones, MP3 players, tablets
etc. when in public. New York City has recently
experienced an increase in crime, particularly on
subways relating to the theft of these devices. When
in public, we strongly advise that you place these
devices in your bag, backpack, or pocket and do not
display them until you get to your destination.
• Do not leave personal property unattended while
in public places. Public places include hallways,
classrooms, studios, student lounges, computer
rooms, and kitchens. Additionally laundry should
not be left unattended in the laundry rooms of our
residence buildings.
• We strongly advise that students in the residence halls
keep doors locked at all times, whether in or out of
the room.
• Be leery of apartment ads listed on craigslist.com. Use
a licensed broker in your apartment searches.
• Do not carry your social security card or passport with
you. If these documents are stolen, the person can
assume your identity and open up accounts in your
name which can damage your credit. Only carry these
items when needed for employment purposes.
• Be careful using ATM machines. ATM areas in banks
are frequented by the homeless, particularly in
cold weather. If you see something that makes you
uncomfortable, go to another ATM. Go with your
“gut” instinct. After withdrawing money, do not stop
to count it. ATMs are well lit and you can be seen from
the outside. Exit cautiously and look around to make
sure you are not being followed.
