ASSISTANT HEAD/UPPER SCHOOL DIRECTOR

The pep rally last Friday was a big success thanks to students Zaahir Badruddin, Bill Judis, Gabe Dorit Kendall, the Student Council
and special funding from the PFA. Though not a first, it certainly was the first pep rally in a long, long time helping to raise spirits
as we all try to navigate the dark days of winter. The students, faculty and staff—all dressed in ASP blue— were treated with a
lesson on how to chant and cheer in collegiate basketball style and enjoyed a winner take all half court basketball shooting contest (though a few of the shots were close, the student council held on to the prize money!)
While there was cheering in Paris, our MUN students were off continuing our school’s rich commitment to the MUN conference
in the Hague. The Hague conference, the largest in Europe, is a week long student run simulation that is both educationally compelling and intellectually exhausting. Below you’ll read a report on the conference from Ouriel Reshef, our MUN Director.
With I.B. orals on Saturday, and the Super Bowl on Sunday, maybe a day or two of rest was just what the doctor ordered for our
students?
Report from MUN Desk – Ouriel Reshef
Model UN season has just seen one of its highlights, as a delegation of 20 students participated in The Hague International Model
UN (THIMUN). Delegates, but also Chairs and Press Officers, took part actively and with great energy in the week-long conference, which gathers every year 3400 students and 400 teachers – the true “Mecca” of MUN in Europe! Weeks of intensive preparations have resulted in intensive lobbying, resolution merging, and great debating. Many delegates had the satisfaction of “mainsubmitting” their resolution or taking the floor to speak for or against, many “points of information” were raised, and of course
many notes were passed and new friendships woven. A great opportunity to hone negotiating skills, perfect rhetorical tricks,
apply Global Citizenship to the issues debated in the various committees and to the country represented this year (Nigeria), as
well as to network.
Coming in the wake of our participation in the Leiden MUN (LEMUN) in November, and of our own Paris Model UN (PAMUN) in
December, THIMUN whirlwind week in January often seems as one of the topmost MUN experiences. This should not however
cast a shadow on what is still in store for the MUN club in the months ahead: mentoring ASP’s Middle School MUN, mentoring
disadvantaged students from French schools to prepare their participation in PAMUN next year, preparing for the spring conference which will bring us to Haileybury, one of the long-established conferences near London, to which have already sent a delegation in the past. Plenty to look forward to, until the Club adjourns in April – while the newly appointed Executive Team for
PAMUN 13 is already busy with preparations for next year’s conference. No rest for the brave !

Experiential Learning: The World of Work
An enormous thank you is due to those of you in the ASP community who hosted our upper school students for one of this
week’s Career Days. As you may know, teenagers can sometimes be reserved in their enthusiasm, but the feedback I have
received from our students who took part in these experiences has been overwhelmingly positive. Among the incredible
workplaces that participated were General Electric, NRJ, Coty, Sisley, Nike, Vallourec, Alcatel-Lucent, Printemps, UBPartner
and the Embassies of Denmark and Oman. Bravo to the dozens of students who took advantage of these incredible opportunities and a huge and heartfelt “MERCI” to the generous professionals who offered their time and expertise to help our students better understand the world or work.
CLASSROOM AS NEWSROOM
As you may know from previous newsletters, ASP has taken on the honor and responsibility as the European News Bureau for an
international school media collaborative known as NEWSACTION. In recent weeks, several articles from ASP students have “hit
the press” and there will be dozens more from our students in the weeks to come. To enjoy some of the great work being done
by ASP students and others from around the world, visit www.newsaction.org.
On a related note, ASP in conjunction with the Pulitzer Center and partner bureaus in Washington D.C. and Mumbai, are excited
to announce a Digital Storytelling Competition (details below). We are inviting submissions from around the world that respond
in some way to a broad umbrella theme: What will my future look like?
This is a great opportunity for students to inform, reflect, challenge, provoke , appeal, engage or simply be creative…
The Rules
Your goal is to tell a great story. Focus on one person and tell how his or her
story relates to a bigger global issue. Your reporting must be original, factual
and true, and it should consider multiple sides of the story. It should feature
at least three voices: an in-person interview with the individual affected, an
expert on the topic (like a researcher, a teacher, a doctor, or a professor), and
any other third voice of your choice. That third person can be you, the narrator. Stories can be told using any combination of info-graphics, audio, video,
photography and text. Think carefully about the media you use to tell yours to
an audience of peers around the world. Topic examples: sex trafficking, LGBT
rights, minority rights, HIV / AIDS, family planning, access to healthcare, personal choices, girls’ education, literacy.
Articles must be no longer than 2,000 words. Video and audio stories must be
no longer than 5 minutes. A photo gallery or info-graphic collection must
contain no more than 10 captioned photographs.
The Prize
The best reporting will be published on NewsAction.org. The top three projects will also be featured by thePulitzer Center, and US$200 will be donated
to each winner’s charity of choice. Winners can choose from one of the following organizations:
Judging
Entries will be judged by students from NewsAction.org bureaus in Washington D.C., Mumbai,
and Paris. Winners will be announced no later
than March 15th
