Did Chamber Receive Tornado Recovery Funds From City?

The recent state audit of the City of Joplin and, as a contractor, the Chamber’s
City funding for economic development, brought a question my way on another
topic. Did the Chamber receive any tornado recovery funds from the City? No.
The Chamber’s Business Recovery Fund, which was established immediately
following the tornado through the Chamber Foundation, was not linked in any
way to the City or to the City’s tornado relief fund. This fund was to help the
Chamber sustain through what was anticipated to be a need for increased efforts
as well as direct support for businesses that were damaged or destroyed by the
storm.
We eventually raised just under $1 million for the Chamber’s Business Recovery
Fund. The Foundation board, which is composed of members from the Chamber board of directors
including the treasurer, was and still is responsible for overseeing the use of the those funds. The
Foundation board authorized a loan fund for small businesses of nearly $250,000. We dedicated some
“first-in” funds to getting laptops to loan to businesses that lost all office equipment. We used funds to
hire and maintain additional staff to track the status of firms impacted by the tornado on a regular basis
(lots of phone calls for the first two years) so the great full-time staffers could spend face-to-face time
with our members and other businesses. We used funds to do a complete new strategic plan in 2012 with
a group called Market Street Services to reset our economic development program overall and define
specific things (like a loan fund) to help businesses recover. We have used some of the funds to help Joplin
Schools with Career Readiness and other programs that build the workforce.
A CPA conducts an annual audit of the Chamber, Chamber Foundation and the economic development
entities managed by the Chamber Foundation. As you might imagine, we had large influx of funds in
2011 and spent it in 2012 and 2013. That large swing in funds prompted an examination by the IRS early
in 2015. Our examination was conducted and all prior year returns were accepted as presented. The IRS
examiner had no recommendations for improvement. Even when our team asked for suggestions for
improvement, the auditor found nothing more to ask for from the Chamber or our CPA firm.
The Chamber has extensive controls in place for all entities and makes any changes as recommended
by our CPA. In fact, it may interest you to know our financial policies and procedures are extensively
reviewed by a committee of members with expertise every five years as part of our accreditation process.
Our polices and procedures receive high marks in the accreditation review by the U.S. Chamber of
Commerce and have been selected as “Best Practice” in our last two accreditation cycles.

Butterfly Project Offers Larger-than-life Sculptures for Your Business, Home
It’s time for the Joplin Business Community to be JOPLIN PROUD and Spread
Our Wings - Fly High and Proud. You can support this by showing your colors
in the form of a beautiful butterfly exhibited at your business, your home
or other location in the Joplin area. These larger-than-life butterflies can be
purchased, decorated and displayed in conjunction with the tornado’s Fifth
Anniversary events.
Net proceeds of this project will help support a disaster conference to be
held May 2016. This conference is just one way we can “pay it forward” to
help better prepare others for what disasters might be in their future.

Chamber of Commerce Foundation. We will take orders from now until

Have you ever thought about the habits, good or bad,
created at the office? How do the small things we do, like
looking for opportunities to share an encouraging word,
offering help with a project or going above and beyond
what is needed, affect our character? How does office
gossip, coasting or a negative attitude carry over to our
personal lives?
Margaret Thatcher is credited with issuing the warning
to “Watch your words for they become actions. Watch
your actions for they become habits. Watch your habits
for they become your character.” I hear many people say
their personal lives do not affect their work and vice versa.
However, studies clearly show it takes 21 days to create a
habit, good or bad.
I challenge you to join me in examining the habits
practiced at work, and choose one to focus on in
September. I look forward to hearing about your progress
and sharing my own.

What Can Business EXPO Do for You?
I got involved in the EXPO and the EXPO committee because I just wanted to help and get to
know others in the business community.
Now as a business owner, I know the benefits of networking and developing personal
relationships with other business professionals as well as people who live and work in the area. I
wanted to have a constant, always present and top-of-mind place with every individual of our
community, so when they are ready to buy, sell or survey anything,
they think of me. The EXPO is a great avenue for me to do that.
Being on the EXPO Committee and now serving as co-chair
allows me to give back to the community and develop relationships
with other like-minded individuals.

I’ve been an exhibitor at Business EXPO for over a dozen years
and have always thought it was one of the most beneficial events
to be part of. The exposure to other businesses within the area
and the public has been priceless in promoting services. I wanted
to be on the committee, and once the opportunity arose, I happily
volunteered. This is my fourth year being a part of the Business
EXPO committee and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. As chair this
year I’m so excited about what the committee has decided on for the theme and how we are
looking to mix it up this year.
JACC Business EXPO is the biggest expo of its kind in the area with more exhibitors, more
networking with Business After Hours, more exposure with a business day and a public day, and
of course, more fun with the use of themes. EXPO is our business community coming together to

When was the last time you
wrote goals for your business?
Do you have a clear vision for
your company? As Yogi Berra
once said, “If you don’t know
where you are going, you might
wind up someplace else.”
Companies often have
goals for increasing sales and
profits, gaining market share,
improving customer satisfaction
and hiring great people.
Within the last decade, more
companies have begun to set goals that concern being
socially or community minded, as well as becoming more
environmentally conscious.
Consider setting short- and long-term goals. Shortterm goals can be achieved within one year. You will
want to set long-term goals for the next three to five
years. Remember, many business strategies that are
implemented may take longer to succeed than were
previously planned. For example, it takes the average new
small business 18 months to reach break-even sales.
You may become aware of new ideas for expanding
your business as you start setting goals. You will need
to commit time to write your goals down and think
about how you will achieve them. Your goals will be the
starting point for developing a strategic plan that can
help your company thrive. You can focus your actions and
efforts toward attaining your goals instead of becoming
complacent.
Establish a system you will use to review your goals
periodically to see if you are achieving them. As you make
decisions on a daily basis, think about how your actions
are helping you meet your goals. A flexible strategy allows
you to follow your plan, making adjustments about what
is not working, but always keeping your goals in mind.
Consider measuring and tracking the outcomes of your
goals.
Good business goals are a component of your business
plan. This type of planning helps to reduce your risk of
failure and increase your ability to succeed. Effectively
communicating your goals and business strategy to your
employees is essential. To be able to implement a plan and
achieve your goals, employees must understand them and
believe they are achievable.
The SMART method is a
valuable tool for setting goals
that are specific, measureable,
achievable, relevant and time
oriented.
Specific goals describe
exactly what you want to accomplish. When you write
detailed goals, you can more clearly visualize
them and see how you can achieve them. A specific goal
would be to increase profits by 5 percent during 2016. You could then look at what strategies might help you accomplish this goal.
Measurable goals help you quantify your progress. If
your goal is to increase your revenue by $75,000 in 2016,
you might want to break your annual goal into quarterly
monetary goals to monitor your progress. Measure your
outcomes to see if you are accomplishing your goals.
Achievable goals are those you believe you can
actually reach. Your goal should be challenging enough
to keep you on track, but not so difficult you will be
discouraged. Can you reduce operating expenses by 15
percent during 2016? What plans would help you reach
this goal?
Relevant goals work toward your company mission
and vision. Your goals need to be relevant to what
your company does and what it can accomplish. Your
expectations for your company should be high; however,
they should also be attainable. If you set a goal to donate
$40,000 to your favorite charity, and you only have gross
sales of $50,000 a year, your goal is unrealistic since you
may also have a relevant goal of being profitable in order
to stay in business.
Time-oriented goals allow you to set deadlines or
timeframes in which to accomplish each goal. Openended goals encourage you to procrastinate. If your goal
is to have a new product line introduced by your company,
make certain to indicate by what date you want to
accomplish this goal.
Use some common sense and think of reasonable
goals you can actually achieve. Set goals that help you
achieve success, and review your goals on a regular basis.
According to Ralph Waldo Emerson, “We aim above the
mark to hit the mark.”
