The St Peters Soloists String Orchestra has returned after touring Japan in December. Throughout
their 18 days abroad the group of Years 7-12 students performed 13 concerts and enjoyed cultural
exchanges with schools across Kobe, Awaji Island, Kyoto, Tokyo and Osaka. They were exposed to
traditional Japanese instruments, tea ceremonies, traditional theatre and puppetry, and Japanese
foods. Students also enjoyed participating in English conversation classes, and sharing their
knowledge of string instruments and Australian culture.
Thank you to our host families in Tokyo for their generosity.

HEAD OF COLLEGE
MINISTRY
I welcome all members of our school community to the new school year.
It is my prayer that you have had a restful and peaceful break and that
the year ahead will be enjoyable and rewarding for all of us.
In the past two weeks, we have welcomed new staff and student leaders
into their respective roles. I look forward to the energy that these members
of our college will bring to the daily activities at St Peters. I also congratulate
Dr Adam Forsyth who has accepted the position as Deputy Headmaster –
The Hutchens School in Hobart. Dr Forsyth will leave us in the second half of
February, and a national search has already begun for the position of Head
of Senior School. Further details regarding this position will be outlined to
parents and the Senior School community in the weeks ahead.
We have also had an opportunity to congratulate the students who made up the Year 12 Class of
2015 for their achievements in their academic studies. We have celebrated with the 13 students who
gained an OP1 or International Baccalaureate equivalent, and importantly, with many others who
achieved at the very highest of standards and gained entrance into Universities across the globe.
At the Scholars Assembly this week, we will celebrate with the 11% of our 2015 Year 12 students
who gained an OP 1-2 or the IB equivalent, and recognise many others who have received Tertiary
scholarships. On a special note, we will congratulate Wilson Tsu who received a full scholarship to
New York University – Abu Dhabi, and Kyra Yap on being awarded the James Dickson Carr Scholarship
at The State University of New Jersey. This is a merit based scholarship for international students, and
will allow her to take up a place in the Rutgers Honours College.
In 2016, my role as Head of the College will continue to focus on the strategic direction of the
College. The Strategic Plan for the next five years will be released at the end of Term 1, and we will
then be engaged in elements of the Plan for the remainder of the year. As a first step in the Strategic
Plan, baseline data is to be gathered. This will allow us to check, on a regular basis, the progress of
the College towards achieving our goals. In Term 2 / 2016, a ‘Whole of College Survey’ engaging all
parents, staff and students from both St Peters Lutheran College Indooroopilly and St Peters Lutheran
College Springfield will be conducted by an external company. In Term 3 / 2016, an ‘Alumni Survey’
involving past students will also be conducted. This is the first time such a widespread gathering of
data has been carried out in the history of St Peters, and I am looking forward to having an accurate
and informed snapshot of the College community from which to base our decisions going forward.
In 2016, we are already looking towards the 75th Anniversary celebrations to be held in 2020. The
St Peters Old Scholars Association (SPOSA) and the newly formed Future Foundation will both gain
further momentum this year to help us achieve our strategic vision. It is incumbent upon us to excite
the College community in order to achieve these future goals, and at the same time, preserve the
values and mission of the College.
Welcome and welcome back to school! We hope
you had restful holidays and are refreshed and
ready for another year of learning and growing.
As I write this article, there is the excited buzz of
new students exploring the College, being shown
around by their student buddies. This afternoon
the new prep students and their parents are
coming in, as well. It’s always a bit scary and
overwhelming starting in a new school but soon
all that is new and unknown at the moment
will become familiar as students settle into our
college community. Peers and staff will readily
assist with the journey into finding a place in our
midst. Never be afraid to ask for help when you
get lost on campus or stuck on a task.
As a Christian College we seek to be welcoming
and we value inclusiveness, in the knowledge
that our Lord who said:…whoever comes to me
I will never drive away (John 6:37). We want
each member of our community to find their
place, discover their gifts, grow in their abilities,
and develop as a whole person. Our motto “Plus
Ultra” (ever higher, more beyond) points the
way not only to our goal to help each student to
reach their full potential, but to also recognise
that there is a mystery to life, something or
someone greater than each of us.
So, whether you are a returning student or a new
student, you and your family are welcome here.
We will work hard at helping you to find your
place as a valuable member of our community,
and we want you to know that this is inspired by
the one whom we proclaim as Lord, Jesus Christ.
May you find your place among us here and
know that on this journey you are never alone!
May our Lord bless this year for you.
Every blessing for the year ahead.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Welcome to Year 5
at home to discuss and reinforce the importance
of cyber safety.
On behalf of the Year 5 form teachers, Virginia
Thomson, Jan Bindon and Andrew Robin, I
would like to extend a very warm welcome to
the Year 5 students and families joining us in
2016. The students have been very busy learning
the routines of Middle School, participating in
orientation activities and meeting new friends
and teachers. Classes will be conducting a mini
inquiry over the first few days to familiarise
them with Middle School and the PYP inquiry
cycle. Classes will also negotiate their essential
agreements, set up their iPads and work
through a cyber-safety Budd: e Programme.
We encourage you to also work through the
interactive Budd: e Programme with your child
Information about routines and procedures in
Middle School is readily available in the 2016
Handbook on the Middle School pages and the
Portal.
We have a number of students in Year 5 with
allergies. Could we respectfully request that you
are mindful of this when packing your child’s
lunch and avoid including nuts/nut products.
The Year 5 Meet the Teacher Evening will be
held on Tuesday 9 February from 7-9pm. Further
details will be provided shortly.
Woodrow Library
Welcome to 2016 in the Woodrow Library
We commenced our Orientation Program for all
Years 5-7 students this week, with formal
Library lessons beginning next week. Many
students have already taken the opportunity to
borrow reading material, which is great to see.
We look forward to working in partnership with
you to make your child’s first year in Middle
School a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

Welcome to Year 6

Closures
This year we welcome Mrs Penelope (Penny) Patterson to the Year 6 teaching team. Mrs Patterson
will be the Form Teacher for 6E.
The Woodrow Library is available to students
needing to study, borrow or work on
assignments after school. Please note that our
operating hours have been designed to suit
the age and needs of our students and their
workloads. The library is not a ‘free alternative’
to After School Care whilst students wait to
be collected by parents. Students using the
library after school hours should be organised
with study to complete. Furthermore, Years 5-7
students are not permitted to use the Langer
Library after school.
The Year 6 teachers are:
• 6A: Ms Lia Trevisan - room MSW14 (Coordinator);
• 6B: Mrs Deb Batchelor - room MSW3;
• 6C: Mrs Lauren Coote - room MSW2;
• 6D: Mr Steve Schmidt - room MSW15; and
• 6E: Mrs Penny Patterson - room MSW2.
A very warm welcome to our new students; Charli, Lilli, William, James R, Maxim, James M and Jack.
This term will no doubt be a very busy but exciting one. There will be a Student Leadership day on
Friday 26 February, all Year 6 students are involved in this day.
We look forward to meeting you on Tuesday 9 February for our Meet the Teacher evening.

JUNIOR HIGH
Welcome to 2016!
On behalf of the Junior High staff I look forward to working with you and your child throughout the
year. This week, I have encouraged the students to be positive about the year ahead and focus on
what we believe to be the three ‘Keys to Success’ at St Peters.
• Treat each other with care, dignity and respect. This also includes showing self-respect through your actions and words.
• Get involved – St Peters Lutheran College offers an amazing array of opportunities so ‘Have a Go’!
It’s a great way to make new friends and develop new skills.
• Work hard and do your best. When you know you’ve done your best you can always be proud of your achievements.
Monday’s “Orientation Day” has enabled all Year 7 students and new Year 8 and 9 students to adjust
to their surroundings prior to the start of the school year.
I have been particularly impressed with how the students have been able to take the initiative
and approach problems with a sense of fun and adventure as they read timetables and find their
way around such a large campus. Equally pleasing has been the friendliness exhibited by returning
students as they welcome new members to our community.
Next week the Year 7’s are attending their ‘Fun and Friendship’ camp at Luther Heights Youth Camp,
Coolum where they will be faced with adventure and team development challenges. No doubt the
students will come away with memories to last a life-time. I will visit both groups and look forward to
hearing about all their adventures upon their return.
While not on camp, Year 7 students will be participating in alternative programs at school in their
Form Class groups as well as some normal lessons. This program aims to further assist the students’
transition to Junior High. Sessions may include:
• Library Skills Session – accessing databases and online resources
• Science Lab Orientation – procedures, equipment and safety – Science Teachers
• Where’s Wally? – locating key areas around the College
• Swimming Session – Preparing for Swimming Carnival next week (7F-K Monday after lunch & 7A-E Friday after lunch)
• The History of St Peters & Ross Roy Tour (Presented by SPOSA – St Peters Old Scholars Association)
• Reading Session – getting started reading their English novel
Trish Allen, Head of Junior High

Communication
In a large organisation such as St Peters Lutheran
College it can be challenging to work out who to
contact if you have a question or concern. Over
coming weeks I hope to showcase the various
departments within the school to assist you.
To start the year off well, see if you can check off
the following:
• Download the St Peters App and subscribe to the relevantalert;
• Familiarise yourself with the Portal;
• Find the Junior High Page – Year Level Page, Curriculum Tab;
• Find the BYOT Page;
• Explore the St Peters Indooroopilly Calendar;
• Explore ‘My Student Account’ - Knowledge Base – Great Qs & As; and
• Do you know the names of your child’s teachers and how to contact them – they are your first port of call for most issues.
Year 9 Leadership Day
On Wednesday 3 February, the Year 9 cohort
will participate in a Leadership Day facilitated by
‘yLead’. The purpose of the day is to encourage
students to be more aware of their own potential
as leaders by examining common traits of
leadership and learning how to focus on team
building. They are sure to enjoy the day.
Traffic Concerns
St Peters is a pedestrian precinct and for the
safety of our students and all who live and work
on the campus, we minimise the number of
vehicles on the campus roads.
Please be aware that unless a special pass has
been applied for and granted, parents are asked
to drop off and pick up their children outside
College grounds at peak times. These being
between 7.00am - 8:30am and between 2:45 and
3:45pm. Please do not park at the internal bus
stop waiting for your child or use it as a ‘drop and
go’ zone during these times.

It is with pleasure that I welcome students, families and staff to the commencement of the 2015
school year; in particular I welcome our new students and families who are beginning their St Peters
journey.
Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Leadership Camp with the 2016 student leaders at
Ironbark – this annual event is a great opportunity for the leadership team to bond and to set their
goals for the year. My thanks to all of the Ironbark staff, and in particular Mr Matt Sullivan (Director of
Ironbark), also the Deputy Head of Senior School, Mr David Rushmore, and Year 12 Coordinator, Ms
Bronwyn Jamieson, for their help in organising and running this camp and Pastor Silke, Senior School
Chaplain, and Pastor Thomas, College Chaplain, for their help and attendance at the camp.
On Friday we will celebrate the academic excellence of the Senior School in 2015 with our Scholars
Assembly. Invitations to parents of students who are receiving an award were sent out last week; the
ceremony will commence at 8:15am in the PAC auditorium and will conclude at 9:50am. Morning tea
will be provided in the PAC servery after the ceremony.
This week, Year Level Coordinators reminded students about a number of important matters and
I ask parents to help reinforce these with their children:
• Students must have a formal College hat (in good condition). This must be worn to and from school; students are permitted to wear a College bucket hat whilst on campus. Students are expected to have a hat with them at all times and always to wear a hat when outside;
• Students in the Senior School are permitted to keep their mobile phones with them at school – the phone must be turned off (or be on silent). Students may only access/use mobile phones in class if directed by a teacher or in the immediate vicinity of their locker for urgent communication with a parent or guardian. Students who do not comply with these expectations will have their mobile phone confiscated; and
• Students are not permitted to drive cars on campus at any time.
On Monday 8 February the Year 9 2015 Academic & Ironbark Awards will be held in the PAC
Auditorium from 8:10am. Current Year 10 students will celebrate their 2015 Academic Achievements
at a ceremony in the PAC. Ironbark Awards will also be presented at this ceremony. Parents of Award
Recipients will receive an invitation in the mail shortly. All parents are welcome and a morning
tea will be served after the ceremony. Students who were in 9L/M in 2015 will also receive their
Cocurricular Awards at this Ceremony.
On Wednesday February 10 an information session for senior school parents will be held in the
PAC – from 6:00pm-7:30pm; the aim of this evening is to give parents a general overview of the
senior school at St Peters and to meet key members of staff.

As well as being a lot of fun, this wonderful
opportunity also gave the choir insight into the
rehearsal process needed to prepare adequately
for a professional performance as well as the
focus and dedication needed to perform well
every night in a performance series.
The international music director, Andrew
Mogrelia, and Queensland Ballet’s artistic
director, Li Cunxin, complemented the choir on
the standard of its performance. Congratulations
to all the students involved and thank you to
Miss Morton for conducting them.

The Music Support Group is a fellowship of parents and an integral part of the College community. Their purpose is to support St Peters students’ cultural and spiritual development within their participation in the music programmes and to support the Music Department staff to promote musical excellence. It is not an onerous time commitment and is usually associated with an activity in which your child will be involved – for example, helping to organise and serve supper after a concert. Please contact the Music Department to register your interest in this group. A separate brochure for more information about this group is available. BOYS SPORT (YEARS 5–12)
Boys Sport Coordinator, Matt Bradforde phone: 3377 6234 mobile: 0434 072 059 email: [email protected]
Welcome to Boys Sport in 2016. We have many opportunities for boys this term. Come and see the
team in Sports House to sign up. Remember, it’s not just the games themselves we love, but the
comradery and friendships forged that make sport so enjoyable. I look forward to supporting many
students in their sporting endeavours throughout the year.
AIC Swimming
AIC Cricket and Volleyball
Well done to swimmers who attended the recent
Swim Camp. The AIC swimming season shifts
into gear immediately with St Peters hosting
an AIC swim meet this Friday 29 January to
be attended by four of the eight AIC schools.
Swimmers in Years 5 – 12 will compete in the
50m pool. Warm up begins at 4:15pm and the
meet will commence at 4:45pm and conclude
at approximately 6:30pm. All swimmers are
welcome to attend training and meets.
It’s been a whirlwind start to the school year, with trainings and trial games during the last week of
school holidays providing that extra ‘leg up’ before we embark on the AIC season proper for volleyball
and cricket. Thank you to the boys who checked emails, attended clinics and put in their best efforts
over the past two weeks. Swimming, Cricket and Volleyball trainings are now in full swing. Training
will continue for the next seven weeks and I encourage students and parents to become familiar with
the training and fixture schedules.
Full Saturday trials for Cricket and Volleyball start this Saturday 30 January. It is imperative that
your son attends his respective training sessions this week so preliminary teams can be finalised.
For details of times and venues for these practice fixtures against St Edmund’s College please read
on and always remember the quickest and easiest way to check information is on the St Peters App
and portal.
To develop our sporting programs, it is essential that students attend training sessions for their
chosen sport so that they can refine sport-specific skills and build team cohesion. If students are
unable to attend some sessions, it is vital that their absence is communicated to their coaches firstly,
then their coordinators.

this extra training.
Next Friday 5 February St Peters will host an AIC
invitational swim meet for all eight AIC Colleges.
I encourage all boys to attend training and the
Friday night meets.

Welcome to the 2016 sporting year. I’d like to take the opportunity to introduce

look forward to meeting each and every one of you and to enjoying an exciting,
challenging and enjoyable year of sport.
Cross Country
Coordinator: Miss Lisa Dighton
[email protected]
Girls Sport at St Peters has a history of high participation and I look forward to
continuing that tradition in 2016. We encourage all girls to be actively involved in
the holistic education offered to them at the College. There are many valuable life
lessons to be gained from involvement in the cocurricular program: the development of resilience,
teamwork skills, self-motivation, goal setting as well as the benefits of physical health, well-being and
fitness. The sense of being part of the St Peters community through involvement in the cocurricular
program cannot be understated along with the friendships forged along the way.
Sign-on will take place this Thursday 28 January
and Friday 29 January at lunch time (12.30 -1pm)
outside Café 45. Come and join our running club!
It commences in Week 2 and is available to the
entire St Peters community – parents, teachers
and students. Training schedules will be emailed
and available on the portal next week.
There are a wide range of sports on offer and we hope each and every girl at St Peters will take up the
opportunity to be involved in the program.

Sport for Life!
The Sport for Life! program was
developed and implemented in 2006
for students in Years 5-7. The focus
of the program is for all individuals to
participate and have fun in sporting
based activities. The Recreational
Sport Program will enable students to
learn new skills in a particular activity.
Students will take part in a different
activity for each of the first four weeks of
Term 1 and Term 2.
In addition to this, structured Sport
Development activities will run
throughout the year. This will be done
during the last four weeks of each
term and allow students to practice
fundamental sporting skills, including
kicking, striking, throwing and catching.
This program encourages students
to be active, have fun and improve
coordination skills, further building their
confidence. These sessions are organised
to supplement AIC and Primary Girls
Sporting competition that is available for
students in Years 4-6.
