The organizing committee The classes Personalities The competitive angle Event Program The Race village The island of saint Barthelemy Media info The event Partners Les Voiles de Saint Barth: Presentation of the event After a successful first edition in April of 2010, and in response to the praise and enthusiasm of the participants, the VDSB organization promptly established the dates for its second edition in 2011. Fist the event found a date on the Caribbean Regatta calendar and word of mouth publicity did the rest. The positive feedback and appreciative words traveled with the ever moving sailing community and sailing enthusiasts drawing tremendous interest in the event. Quickly the organizing team went to work on trying to make an even better event on all levels and sent out the invitations for 2011. In 2010, the Collectivity of Saint-Barthélemy, the Tourism Board, and the Saint Barth Yacht Club decided to create a new nautical event in one of the world’s most beautiful settings. The president of the Collectivity, Bruno Magras, explained, “in developing this event, it was a decision to make a tribute to the island’s past”. Saint Barthelemy has long been known as a rendez vous point for sailing yachts and for amicable regattas. Les Voiles de Saint Barth further confirms that an emphasis on nautical activities is part of the island vision for the future as well. The Caribbean regatta calendar is very full but Les Voiles de Saint Barth is conveniently placed after the Heineken and Bucket Regattas and before Antigua Race week. Les Voiles de Saint Barth is a five-class regatta encompassing the most modern yacht as well as the classics, super yachts and multihull. The event brings together some of the oldest vessels and personalities in the Caribbean with some of the most state of the art boats and the youngest most accomplished new generation of sailors. On the program there is four days of racing on a diversity of courses and a lay day offering the opportunity to the teams to take advantage of the island on land. The hope to bring together wind, sun, a festive ambiance and an exceptional rigor quality in all aspect of the event has been the order for the Organizing team. The 400+ sailors as well as their friends and families will join every morning and each evening to mingle in the Race Village, a carefully planned space that will offer a variety of entertainment, media, gastronomic tasting and a multitude of unforgettable moments. What’s new in 2011? Rising tide In order to establish itself on the well-established Caribbean regatta calendar as a new event, Les Voiles de Saint Barth had to come in with a strong new vision and excellent execution on order to survive. Les Voiles de Saint Barth, taking place April 4-9 is in between the Heineken regatta (in its 31st year) and the Antigua Sailing week (in its 44th year!). Despite its freshman status, Les Voiles de Saint Barth has assembled a very impressive fleet and most importantly the fleet of 2010 is absolutely present again in 2011 and they did bring their friends just like they promised! The organizing team hopes to keep the boats thoroughly satisfied and maintain an excellent quality while keeping a small event feel as the numbers of participants swell. The Fleet and its well known sailors represents the countries of USA, New Zealand, Austalia, France, Lithuania, Sweden, Italy, Germany, UK, with the heavy concentration of Dutch boats! (Coyote 2, Nix, iLOST, Blach Hole, Ocean Warrior, Antilope) Jimmy Buffet, The Event Godfather It’s the iconic American singer, Jimmy Buffet, Born in 1946 in Mississippi, USA that we are honored to present as the “Godfather” of the second edition of Les Voiles. Jimmy Buffet, one of the worlds most famous musicians and singers is also an author, producer, actor, surfer and businessman. Since 1970 Buffet has composed more than 30 albums, written 4 best sellers, and given 1000’s of concerts. A resident in St. Barths for over 30 year, Buffet is a regular in the wave breaks and on his day sailing sloop as well as behind his guitar for informal jam sessions in his favorite SB joints. A huge friend of the island, especially to Marius Stackelborough, this bon vivant and enthusiast of aeronautic and nautical activities is an excellent addition to LVDSB. The lay day After 2 days of racing, on April 7th, there will be a day to relax and enjoy, Saint Barth’s style. For those that have a hard time leaving their competitive edge at home, there will be a regatta off the shores of Nikki Beach. Gastronom y In an effort to provide even more fun and promote the islands treasures there will be an added feature to the Race Village. On April 8th, some of the best chefs on the island will be presenting their delicacies. New partners European sportswear professional, GAASTRA, has become an official supporter of LES VOILES. Specialist in nautical events, Gaastra has developed a special collection of products “LES VOILES DE SAINT BARTH” which they will distribute worldwide. This impressive collection will add a memorable feature to the event and will help word of LES VOILES travel around the world. COCA COLA is also joining forces as a supporter with their “OPEN HAPPINESS” campaign, and is providing the musical entertainment for the closing ceremony. THE HOTEL GUANAHANI AND SPA, another partner is offering a cocktail ceremony for LES VOILES on the 6th of April. Les Voiles de Saint Barth provides the possibility for these divers vessels to race separately yet together to offer maximum security and competition with in the classes. THE SUPER YACHTS Today’s generation of Maxi yachts often refer to prototype designs that comprise the most state of the art technology and marine architecture in some of the largest and most esthetic vessels. As more and more vessels over 30 meters are being built many regattas in the Mediterranean as well as the Caribbean are creating Super Yacht classes, often themselves divided into Racing and Racing Cruising sub classes. Slowly, these boats are not only defying our concept of design and capacity but they are challenging speed records in their path. RAMBLER 100’ Built by Alex Jackson, Rambler 100’, launched as SPEEDBOAT in 2008 has been a boat to watch. A Juan Kouyoumdijan design, Cookson built hull with a Southern Spar rig this boat was built to break records and explore state of the art design and technology. The boat has been charted by Richard Branson as VIRGIN MONEY to break the transatlantic record and has been present at many of the worlds regattas. George David, owner of Rambler 90’, has been successfully campaigning on SPEEDBOAT, renamed RAMBLER 100’, taking line honors in the 2010 Newport Bermuda Race and most recently breaking the RORC 600 Monuhull record. After some critical renovations to the keel and rig, David and RAMBLER 100’will be spearheading the ATLANTIC OCEAN RACING SERIES and will surely continue to beat records. SOJANA: Luxury, according to FARR…SOJANA seems to be one of the most tried and true superyachts as she consistently participates in most of the premiere class regattas in the Caribbean as well as the Med. Designed by Bruce Farr, launched in 2003, SOJANA responded to the desire of its owner, Peter Harrisson, for a boat that can be a viable competitor in its class as well as a yacht to enjoy cruising with his family and a small crew. From the exterior one may see the streamlined ketch approaching 20 knots on a reach, but the below deck hides a luxurious décor mostly reserved for strictly cruising yachts. GENUINE RISK USMMA fleet member, GENUINE RISK is a DUBOIS 97’ canting keelboat built by MC Conaghy in Sydney. This revolutionary keel design and the subsequent rig and hull modifications can be appreciated while observing the boat sail. The rig load, righting moment and displacement differences between such a design and a fixed keel are pushing crews and designers to the top of their game in terms of innovation. GENUINE RISK, a serious contender on the circuit placed-------in the 2010 NEWPORT BERMUDA RACE as recently won the PINEAPPLE CUP, a leg in the ATLANTIC OCEAN RACING SERIES, earning the top performance for a monohull. Hugo Stenbeck will be at the helm of GENUINE RISK for LES VOILES DE SAINT BARTH in 2011. CLASSICS The classic class is a way to showcase boats that have famously linked the Caribbean islands together throughout years of trade, subsistence and sportsmanship. It is with great pleasure that LES VOILES DE SAINT BARTH offers a class to those with the passion of tradition and the dedication to maintain the boats, which connect us with our nautical past. KATE Designed by Scottish builder Alfred Mylne at the turn of the 19th century, KATE is a replica of a 1908 America’s Cup first rule 12 meter. Philipe Walwyn built KATE in ST. Kitts as a sloop and launched her in 2006. KATE has been present in nearly all the classic yacht regattas in the Caribbean and can be regularly seen day sailing off the coast of St. Kitts. In 2010 KATE underwent a transformation to a gaff rigged yawl and will be regaling the spectators in St. Barths with her new rig, tiller steering and classic sail inventory. RACING The racing class, like the super yacht class encompasses some of yachting’s vanguard technology as well as its most dedicated crews. Vessels ranging from 31’ to 60’ will be competing together and sharing the racecourse as well as providing some incredible mark rounding and tactical maneuvers. This years RACING class should be a competitive one amongst boats of similar size. One of the most interesting competitions to watch will be between VENOMOUS a Farr designed CM60, AMBERSAIL another Farr design for the VOLVO 60 and VESPER team Moneypenny a custom TP52. Each of these teams has a full crew of professionals and the goal to win. RACING CRUISING The racing class, like the super yacht class encompasses some of yachting’s vanguard technology as well as its most dedicated crews. Vessels ranging from 31’ to 60’ will be competing together and sharing the racecourse as well as providing some incredible mark rounding and tactical manoeuvres. MULTIHULL The multihull class comprises catamarans and trimarans as well as their owners who prefer these lighter displacement vessels with a distinctly different feel. This year the multihull fleet includes vessels from 30’ to 60’. PHAEDO This newest and lightest of the Johnstone conceived GUNBOATS, was launched in South Africa and has found its home in ST. Barths. Phaedo, playfully customized with black sails and spars and a bright orange hull has been participating in nearly every Caribbean regatta this season. This year PHAEDO will have some good company in the multihull class CARIBBEAN SAILING ASSOCIATION The Caribbean Sailing Association was created to promote sailing in the Caribbean, to unite Yacht Clubs, sailors and fleets. The CSA has also a reliable rating system that is accessible and accurate. Based on nearly the same formulas as the IRC rating, the CSA rating takes special consideration for those vessels present in the Caribbean and partaking in regional regattas. As new boats are launched and refits are undertaken, the CSA’s expert judges and measurers are always ahead of the curve. For the multihulls: rating 2000 for multihulls Personalities Peter Holm berg This accomplished sailor is a native of the Caribbean, born in St. Thomas in 1960. An Olympic competitor in 1984, and in 1988 in the FINN class HOLMBERG has won the first and only OLYMPIC MEDAL for the Virgin Islands. HOLMBERG continued to build a formidable career as a skipper particularly on the match racing circuit attaining the podium for several consecutive WORLD MATCH RACING titles. Solicited by several AMERICA’S CUP campaigns, HOLMBERG has been at the helm of the BMW Oracle Racing team as well as Alinghi team. Bruno Trouble This French skipper, cum LOUIS VUITTON CUP organizer is also a helmsman par excellence. His debut on the world circuit was in 1968 in the Olympics. He also skippered in the AMERICA’S CUP on France III, offering the most successful French America’s Cup effort to date. In 1983 TROUBLE created the LOUIS VUITTON CUP. Ken Read A name well known on the sailing circuit, Ken Read was born in Newport, RI in 1960. Since then his long list of sailing accomplishments has accumulated and propels him forward towards more ambitious goals. 2 time ROLEX yachtsman of the year, READ had over more than 40 world tiles in various classes such as J-24, Etchelles 22 etc. READ debuted in the AMERICA’s CUP in 1999 as tactician on YOUNG AMERICA, then helmed STAR & STRIPES with Dennis Conner. Currently campaigning Il MOSTRO/PUMA Powered by BERG for the 2011-2012 VOLVO race, READ hopes to improve on his already impressive second place in the 2008-2009 VOLVO OCEAN RACE! They speak about Les Voiles de Saint-Barth “We look forward to racing against any boats in the 50-foot range that are put in our class at Les Voiles, but especially, we want to match up against other TP52s,” Swartz added as a challenge to owners. “For me, the island of St. Barth is the number one location in the Caribbean...French food, French wine, and everyone is friendly. The Race Committee does a good job and the organizers put on a fabulous show.” “These are all distance races with a fair amount of heavy-air reaching where we expect the boat to excel,” said David. “Les Voiles de St. Barth will be our short- course racing in 2011, and there isn’t a better place anywhere for that – great weather, a vertical island with views, challenging wind shifts, nice people...the best.” David explained that Les Voiles de St. Barth sometimes incorporates shorter legs into its coastal courses that run anywhere from 6 - 42 miles (though with the intent that no race is more than four hours). “Even with all of its hydraulics, this boat will be a handful to get around the island’s courses in big breezes,” he added. "Don’t change a thing!" Ken Read, after the first leg of the brand new Atlantic Ocean Racing Series (AORS), is expecting a lot from the Les Voiles de Saint-Barth. "Rambler and Leopard are two huge monsters," explained Ken Read showing his full admiration. "They are designed for long ocean races and major offshore courses. They are record-breaking boats". For our crew, it is vital to be able to compete too in inshore races, as here in Saint-Barthélemy, on tough racecourses for day racing around the islands. » Technical aspects of the race 1 - Race format Start zones corresponding to the size of the yachts will be set up in order to create fair races. The site enables a large variety of courses to be established, from the start zone leeward of the island, off Gustavia and around the islands, allowing each class to battle it out on a level playing field and to create a true sporting spirit. As the trade winds tend to ease off in April, we can hope for a steady fifteen-knot easterly wind. This should produce some great races in the sunshine. 2 – Courses The courses will of course be set up according to the wind conditions in the area. Several types of courses are possible off the coast of St. Barts: short coastal runs, Olympic type courses and even a round the island race. The start zone is located two miles to the northwest of the Sugarloaf Rock. The finishing line will be set up to the southwest of the Petits Saints Islands. 3 – Rankings The line honors time of each competitor is noted when they finish the race and the rankings for each stage are drawn up using corrected time by applying a handicap coefficient for each boat. The rankings under corrected time are published in hours, minutes, seconds and hundredths of a second. Points will be awarded for each race using the minimum points system.
