Ranger Adds Its Name To The Winners
A fabulous 137’ America’s Cup J-Class replica
launched in 2004,
Ranger took top honors
in the 2010 Saint Barth
Bucket, after having
participated in the event
on several prior occasions. Owner John
Williams and his crew
finished fourth in “Les
Gazelles des mers” or
racing category for the
first day’s regatta, yet
placed first on the second and third day, in
this 15th anniversary
edition of the Bucket,
with a record size fleet of
39 magnificent sailboats!
points on the island. What
a great way to appreciate
some of the world’s most
exceptional yachts!
The 2010 Bucket 2010
began Thursday evening,
March 25, with the captains’ briefing at Le
Bistrot. The gun for the
first race, a clockwise
around-the-island tour,
was at noon on Friday,
March 26, with the starting and finish line off the
coast near the Petits
Saints.
The 39 entries were all in
the harbor outside of Gustavia, with almost pictureperfect weather conditions: sunny skies, calm
seas, and winds from the
east up to 15 knots. With
handicaps under consideration, Andromeda La Dea,
a 154’ Perini Navi ketch,
was the first to set out,
with staggered starts until
1:35pm, concluding with
the magnificent 148’
Baltic yacht, Visione,
which sports a variable
electronic keel for easy

Barth Bucket broke all
records in terms of size
and provided a great show
out on the water, as well
as for those on land who

access to ports.
This first race around the island was
a great nautical parade with heady
competition. While no serious
breakage occurred, the violet spinnaker of the 164’ Perini Navi yacht
Baracuda, ripped at the top of the
mast, and the job of pulling it out of
the water was not an easy task for
the crew.
At 3:15pm, the 132’ Abeking &
Rasmussen ketch, Hetairos (a general under Alexander the Great), in the
Grandes Dames class, was the first
to cross the finish line, three minutes ahead of the Perini Navi sloop,
Salute, at 184’ the largest boat in the
race. In the Gazelles class, the 148’
Saudade, which left next to last,
took first place in its division, followed by the new racing boat by
Perini Navi, the 125’ P2, just one
minute later. The two J-Class boats
Hanuman and Ranger, came in third
and fourth respectively, just three
minutes later, and just 21 seconds
apart.
In the evening, the annual yacht hop
took place on the dock with invited
guests able to see these fabulous
boats up close!
Changing Winds
The second regatta was the traditional Olympic triangle—or Wiggly
course— among the small islands
around St Barth, with a different
course for each class: for Les
Grande Dames, a small triangle
between Boulanger, Pelé, Toc Vert,
Frégate, and Fourchue, and for the
Gazelles, or faster boats, between
Boulanger, Pelé, Toc Vert, Frégate,
Roche Table, la Poule and les
Poussins, with a finish near the
Petits Saints.
The starts, once again staggered,
took place with good weather once
again, yet the course was adapted in
keeping with slightly shifting winds.
The competition was stiff amongst
the two J-Class boats, Ranger and
Hanuman, with Visione, and
Saudade also in the running, and the
handsome 141’ Rebecca giving the
others a run for their money, with
spinnakers unfurled. Yet Ranger
confirmed the victory at 500 meters
from the finish line.
Weaker Winds
On Day Three
Weak winds from the southeast at
less than 10 knots and calm seas set
the tone for the final day of racing
and a counter-clockwise tour around
the island. These conditions favored
Andromeda La Dea, who came in
first in the Grandes Dames class,
and second in the overall standings
after three days of regattas. Yet in
the end, it was the great J-Class
replica, Ranger, in 10th place on day
three, that had enough overall points
to take the victory and have its
names added to the other winners on
the “Bucket” trophy for the race.
The awards ceremony, Sunday
evening on the main dock, was hosted by Hank Halsted, managing
director of the Bucket, with Bruno
Magras, president of the Collectivity
of Saint Barth, and its senator,
Michel Magras both present.
Rendezvous in 2011 for the 16th
edition of the Saint Barth Bucket
and the 25th anniversary of the first
Nantucket Bucket, which will be
celebrated August 22-28 with a
regatta from Newport to Nantucket.

Marine Park: Recommendations for Easter Week
With Easter vacation the moment
for camping on the island’s beaches, there is often quite a lot of trash
left behind. Please leave the beaches clean: that is the message the
Marine Park hopes will be taken
seriously:

Titouan Lamazou Designs Offical Poster
For Les Voiles de Saint Barth
Artist/writer/navigator Titouan Lamazou designed the official poster for the
first edition of Les Voiles de Saint
Barth. Sentimentally attached to the
island, which he first visited in 1976
with Eric Tabarly, Titouan has made
many freinds here, especially brothers
Luc and Philippe Poupon, fellow
sailors in these tropical waters, and
François Tolède, director of Les Voiles.
Winner of the first Vendée Globe,
Lamazou has created a poster in perfect harmony with the themes of the
eternal woman, prediliction, the sea,
and beautiful sailboats, using tones that
blend with modern and classic yachts,
as well as spirit of yesteryear.
« I always enjoy returning to St Barth,
» says Lamazou. « Some of my best
friends are here. The island has
changed a lot since I first sailed into
the port in 1976 with the Poupon brothers and aboard the sailboats of Eric
Tabarly, where I was on the crew. Saint
Barth is more modern, for sure, but the
magic of the Caribben islands still
enchants me. »
Designing the poster for Les Voiles de
Saint Barth inspired the artist : « They
did not give me any specific direction,
» he confirms. « I simply tried to mix
the futuristic yachts and beautiful classic yachts that will be part of this event
in April. I love the old rigged ships,
especially those of the early 20th century, full of elegance and style. »

An artist without constraints and a
frank person, Titouan Lamazou very
early advised the committee on the
content of his design : « There will be
women….» The four designs he
propsed included sensual female silhouettes with which Titouan Lamazou
includes in the large part of his overall
art works.
Titouan Lamazou should be in Saint
Barth from April 5 -11, not as a sailor
but a friend of the island. Currently, his
work can be seen in the USA, France
and Japon. A limited edition of his
poster for Les Voiles de Saint Barth
will be availale for sale at the race village during the event.

DIDIER SPINDLER, TROPICAL ARTIST
A resident of Saint Barth for the past
four years, visual artist Didier
Spindler has lived in the French
Antilles for over 20 years, first in
Guadeloupe and Les Saintes. His
gallery in Gustavia is a charming
place to discover his colorful canvases.
Painting in a West Indian aesthetic, he
has embraced bright colors with a
passion. For Didier, “Happiness is
something that can be shared.” That’s
why his paintings are like gifts that
share his emotions through his work.
There is not a square inch on his canvases not covered with bold, saturated pigments that dance in the light: he
attacks his work with a fervor that
does not leave space for repentance.
The colors are like the facets of the
artists multiple talents, with blue,
red, turquoise and yellow juxtapose
in cheerful coexistence. Spindler’s
canvases explode with the joy of liv-
ing, like fireworks of West Indian
happiness. They are like a window
of happiness, like a smile to start a
great day.
His work can also be seen in galleries
in Les Saintes, Paris, and Morocco.
