G’day and welcome to yet another fabulous Feast! This year is
a year of change and excitement. We have implemented so many
new initiatives and ideas in 2010 that we believe this year will mark
a new era for the Festival.
With the theme Our Place we will build our place in the middle
of Light Square. Come November, for 16 days we will make Light
Square our home and give our LGBTIQ communities their own
place to feel safe, respected, and fabulous!
At our home in Light Square we will showcase some of the best
queer artists from all over Australia, Canada, and the United
Kingdom. There will be stand-out performances by Moira
Finucane, one of Australia’s most highly acclaimed and exciting
cabaret performers, the thrilling burlesque Brisbane boys in Briefs
and UK sensation Ursula Martinez with her new show My Stories,
Your Emails.
The Festival Hub is our place for Opening Night and the Picnic After
Party, Quench, our Queer Thinkers Weekend, Literature events,
an excellent mix of registered events, film nights, the entire Feast
Visual Arts program plus much more. Feast also welcomes our
broad audience of supporters, friends and lovers of excellent live
performance to our place.
In this, our inaugural year in Light Square, come and be
entertained in Feast’s magnificent circus tent, The Ballroom, or The
Lounge, a plush cabaret style venue, and the intimate Garden
Shed plus our outdoor stage with plenty of free entertainment.
There will be reasonably priced drinks and delicious food. Support
the Festival that supports you and come and enjoy the Festival
atmosphere at Feast’s new home.
This the first time Feast has ever tried anything on this scale, and
I believe it is exactly the type of profile building we need to do,
to ensure the Festival continues to grow and move forward. This
initiative will become the foundation for our future, and give the
festival an exciting new direction.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you, to all
those in the Feast Team who have worked tirelessly to ensure
Feast will reach its 14th Birthday in amazing style, and thank you to
the community who have supported the Festival since its inception
in 1997.
Together let’s build Our Place and make Feast 2010 a festival to
remember.

Messages of Support
A message from Mike Rann
I am delighted to once again add my
support to what promises to be another
vibrant and diverse Feast Festival program.
The 2010 theme is ‘Our Place’, and it offers
a range of exciting and challenging events
that explore this idea, and centres in and
around the Festival’s new performance and
entertainment Hub in Light Square.
Feast connects many diverse sectors of
our community through its program of
activities, and offers celebration as well
as empowerment.
As you will see from this program, it can
truly claim to offer something for everyone.
‘Our Place’ encourages all people to
meaningfully and proudly express their
identities through a program of artistic
excellence, experimentation and creativity.
This festival of gay, lesbian, bisexual,
transgender, intersex and queer life
and lifestyle is an important part of our
State’s annual arts calendar, and one that
celebrates difference while promoting
acceptance.
I congratulate the staff, board
and many volunteers who continue to
present this inclusive festival, and offer my
best wishes to everyone partaking of this
year’s Feast.
A message from the
Lord Mayor of Adelaide
Welcome to the City of Adelaide for the
2010 Feast Festival.
This year’s theme, ‘Our Place’, celebrates
the arrival of artists from local, national and
international locations to perform in the city.
Adelaide City Council is pleased that
Light Square will be the 2010 festival
hub, hosting performances and other
entertainment for the duration of the event.
The City of Adelaide is proud to offer
its citizens a broad range of artistic
experiences, and the Feast Festival is no
exception. The event truly has something
for everyone, including theatre, comedy,
cabaret, visual arts and more.
I encourage the community to come along
and support the 2010 Feast Festival, and I
wish the event every success.
Michael Harbison
The Right Honourable
The Lord Mayor
It’s Festival time once again, and this
year the team of Feast present another
program full of fabulous fun with a range
of engaging performances and events that
celebrate diversity within our community.
The Feast Festival continues to grow and
the 2010 event offers participants new
spaces and new places. Through the
theme of ‘Our Place’ this year’s festival
gives ‘Picnic in the Park’ a brand new
home at Pinky Flat, and provides a new
performance and entertainment Hub in
Light Square.
Now in its 14th year, Feast steps out in style
with a brand new image that reflects the
dynamic energy of the Festival.
As you make your way through this
program you will discover new and
innovative projects that connect, inspire
and intrigue.
Enjoy, Feast 2010!

Ursula Martinez has written some true stories. Some strangers
have sent her unbelievable emails. Ursula invites you to meet the
ordinary and extraordinary characters in her life and in her inbox.
Combining spoken word, live art, character comedy and stand

microscope and being judged from afar. The result is a comical

confession, obsession, miscommunication, the internet, fame, sex,
loneliness and political incorrectness. This is the first time Martinez

Salon de Dance
Moira FINUCANE, star of Burlesque Hour, the woman who has sent
everyone from London to Tokyo into a riotous frenzy, the woman the
French call “uniquely exquisitely demented” sweeps you off your
feet with a sumptuous, spellbinding and delicious new work. This is
Finucane as you have never seen her; as wild Spanish adventuress
Argentina Gina Catalina in a feast for the palate and the senses that
serves up rapacious and erotic adventures, delectably abundant
food and drink, stupendous costumes and stunning writing. Sangria
flows, charcoal meats sizzle, seafood tumbles and audiences lick
their fingers, toss back tequila and cheer wildly!
The stars of Burlesque Hour swing into Feast to create the cult hit;
seedy, magnificent, intimate dark dance hall, drenched in acid
green and gothic noir decor; table seating, lightbulb swinging,
liquor sipping, dance lessons during interval. With gorgeous, seedy
dancers and physical artistes from Melbourne, Sydney and Paris –
volcanic Moira FINUCANE, handsome Paul CORDEIRO, iconic Maude
DAVEY, tuxedoed Rob MCCREDIE, butoh star Yumi UMIUMARE, wild
felines KITTEN KO and No Strings stars Rachel HIGH and Emma J
HAWKINS – Salon de Dance is packed to the rafters with provocative,
sensual and unexpected physical displays.

Dress to celebrate, wave banners, make noise, feel the buzz, and
most of all be prepared to party!
Feast opens the curtains to Our Place, a circus tent carnival
of eclectic and electric delights. Dance, drink and devour
performance, live music and food. Get out and fabulous with
all your friends as the whole community comes together for
Opening Night Party. In the big circus tent the Sleazeball crew
will get you dancing with great DJs from around Australia. On
the live music stage, hosted by funny girl DeAnne Smith, boogie
with Perth sensation, Rose Parker from the much loved Velvet
Janes, the legendary Bluehouse, country star Catherine Britt and
super-charged local band Neon Electric. Catch sneak previews of
some of the best shows in the Festival program; be entertained

Take it easy by the river at Feast’s 21st Picnic in the Park. This year
Picnic goes back to its roots – laid back, friendly and cruisey at
our glorious new location in Pinky Flat. Picnic starts earlier this
year as there’s so much to enjoy. Kick back and relax to live music,
take your lover, your family or your friends for a paddle boat ride
along the river, go sporty and try a fun new game. Bring a picnic
or choose from a range of delicious food on site. Wander the wide
variety of stalls, go to the Feast Show (see page 38 for details) or
enter your dog in the legendary dog show. Groove to top tunes
by Missing Supergirl, The Suits, be entertained by Luke Gallagher
and the delicious Dolly Diamond. Enjoy this classic Picnic in the
Park then, when you’re ready to party your farewell to this year’s
Festival, hop skip and jump to the Hub and doof with DJs till late.
In 2010 the classic Picnic in the Park takes chilling out to extremes.
Revel on with the up-late crew at the Feast Picnic After Party. Join
friends, artists and festival revelers as we celebrate the end of
16 days at our new Festival Hub. Two huge stages, hosted by
City Gym and Girl Feast, throb with some of Adelaide’s best DJs.
Promising to be the biggest and best after-party, this event hosts
club music legends guaranteed to rip up the dance floor. If you
wanna push the party further, let loose in the last few hours before
the Festival officially ends. Farewell 2010 Feast at the biggest Picnic

We have a new route this year – meet at Victoria Square and
then march down Gouger Street, then Morphett Street and on

Razed in Flames presents a cheekily playful performance
of incendiary delight. Dancing between light-hearted

burning staves. Flaming hula-hoops heat things up, the

Queer, Gifted

Other-wise
This performance explores family through the eyes, hearts and
creativity of eight performers and artists from South Australia’s
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander gay and lesbian community.
The show is the culmination of a ground breaking community
cultural development project spanning 2009-2010 exploring
experiences of family through song, storytelling, dance, visual art
and multi media by this wonderfully diverse group.
The performers include Kym Wanganeen, Naomi Hicks, Liz Hurrell,
Chris Bromley, Tempestt Sumner-Lovett, Raymond Zada, Violet
Buckskin and Martin Pascoe. Since Feast 2009, Queer Gifted
and Blak has been acclaimed at the 7th LGBTIQ National Health
Conference.
Be entertained and inspired by this brilliant show which returns to
Feast for one show only following a tour to Pt Augusta, Raukkan,
Whyalla and Berri in October/November.
Sunny is back from sellout seasons in the San Francisco
International Arts Festival and the USA National Queer Arts Festival.
Other-wise is a letter to Sunny’s family come to life on the stage,
exposing his emotions and experiences as a transgender person.
Animated creatures whisk us into worlds of magic as Sunny
explores boy tits, learning to fly and getting comfortable with
contradictions and not knowing. As funny as it is moving, Otherwise is a testament to the courage it takes to be true to oneself.
“San Francisco crowds packed the house to the entertaining,
moving and hilarious show.” USA National Queer Arts Festival

Catherine Britt
A little bit country and a little bit rock n roll. Australia’s
favourite lesbian band is back and raring to go. This time
with the added dimension of rock goddess drummer
Julia Day and the mighty talent of Special Guest
Catherine Britt. Something for everyone; a real crowd
pleaser!
Presented by Feast & Kelly Menhennett
Kelly Menhennett
After wowing audiences at the 2009 Feast Festival with
her outstanding voice and songs, Kelly Menhennett is
back to launch her debut album. Kelly’s velvet yet rough,
rootsy-edged vocals will lead a band of fine musicians,
presenting a mix of heart-warming stories and toetapping tunes, blending folk, roots and gypsy/jazz.
Presented by Women and Chicken Productions
The Fridays
The Fridays comment on the things that make you smile,
the things that make you cry and the things that make
you laugh so hard you wet your pants! Their brand of
folk/rock blends gutsy riffs, sweet harmonies and tunes
promoting their no bullshit attitude to life, love and beer.

It’s the intimacy of the songwriting that first strikes
you about Byron Bay four piece The Lucky Wonders.
Described as ‘stunning and uplifting’ by critics, their
songs invite you into a personal world with honesty
exposed by few artists, and they woo audiences
everywhere with their quality folksy indie pop, warm,
quirky appeal and irreverent banter.

Spreading the Love –
Chat Room
Chat Room is part performance, part conversation, and part
radical relaxation. Join Aurora in her big bed as it tours Adelaide’s
parks, shopping centres, libraries, and public spaces. Engage
in short conversations that explore intimacy and closeness,
separation and disconnection. These conversations are recorded
and become part of the performance, forming a dialogue that
spans across the city, through different neighborhoods, cultures,
and people.
Chat Room asserts itself as a quiet space of personal connection
in the midst of hustle and bustle. As an anecdote to restlessness
and disconnection, Chat Room allows intimate moments of secrets
and sharing. Take part in Chat Room by turning up to any of the
performances around Adelaide. Come to all of them and watch
how they grow and change. Unwind on Aurora’s bed and chat, or
watch the tv monitor that live-streams the performance. Loosen up
this Feast, and go to bed while you’re out.

Blind Nelly
Urban Feast
Nelly has been socially isolated for years... fifty eight years to be
exact. Largely kept within the four walls of her home, Nelly now
finds herself an independent woman after the recent death of her
over-protective Pa.
In 2010, 6 young people met in a studio in Unley to create a play
for the 2011 Feast Festival. The play had no name, no plot, no
characters and no idea what it was going to say… and so an
adventure began.
‘Blind Nelly’ is a provocative new work in progress ‘teaser’ followed
by a forum, inspired by the extraordinary life of a local congenitally
blind woman. What does gender, love, relationship and sex look
like without visual cues? How does one ‘come of age’ at fifty eight?
You now have the opportunity to see the first fruits of this labor of
passion, bravery and laughter as Feast, Urban Myth and Director
Edwin Kemp Attrill presents the 1st reading of this brave new work.
Come on a quirky, tragic and hilarious journey into where Nelly’s
world and reality collide, compliment and permeate each other.
A collaboration between Michele Fairbairn, Daisy Brown, Heather
Frahn, Maura O’Regan, Jason Hawkes and starring Sandy Gore.
Cost (All except KI Tour) –
All tours listed are only $88 per person if purchased more than 2 weeks

Just one hour’s drive from Adelaide is Australia’s richest and bestknown wine region. The Barossa Valley has a wealth of regional
produce and historic vineyards, which make it wonderfully
distinctive and relaxing. Premium wines, five-star restaurants and
cellar doors abound among the vineyards and undulating hills,
with local winemakers including Seppelt, Peter Lehmann and
Penfolds, where you can even ‘make your own blend’ of wine.
The Fleurieu Peninsula has everything from wineries to beaches,
national parks and the famous Coorong. Take South Road and
spend some time in one of Australia’s top wine regions, McLaren
Vale, or get there via the picturesque Adelaide Hills. Widely
regarded for producing exceptional red wines, McLaren Vale is
also gaining a reputation for excellent olives and oils, cheeses,
almonds and berries. Drop into any of the cellar doors to taste the
region’s finest drops and local produce.

Thank You!
On behalf of the team behind the Feast Festival, I take this opportunity to say Thank You!!!
To all of our sponsors, funding partners, supporters,
committees, Feast 500 members, volunteers, friends, the
media, artists and of course the LGBTIQ community of South
Australia, thank for your support and providing your expertise,
talents and passion in helping stage this year’s Festival –
Our Place.
Thousands and thousands of hours go into bringing this
festival to fruition each year, and without every single one of
you, it would not be possible.

Our volunteer team will

swell to almost 200 during
Can’Dee Schanz
the festival. Unfortunately,
Chris Stansfield
some of those would have
Darren Curtis
registered after the guide

went to print for which we

apologise.
