Season’s Greetings
Where it all Started
11
```
nce the year reaches the last
few days before Christmas, one
always starts thinking about the year
that was.
The year kicked off with the
completion of the integration of
IWP into AQS, which in itself was
a rollercoaster ride. People were
moved, sometimes forwards and
backwards in a short space of time,
and so too were offices, stock and
anything else that was not bolted to
the floor. Tempers rose and reached
boiling points on a few occasions,
but fortunately sanity prevailed
and the mission was successfully
completed.
The labour strikes in the
Rustenburg mining region certainly
created one of the most challenging
situations I, personally, and we, as
a company, have experienced in
a very long time. The uncertainty
and helplessness of not being able
to plan or do anything to change
the situation resulted in a new
perspective on faith and hope.
Both of these rollercoaster
rides and the other challenges of the
year forced the AQS Team to plan,
adapt, accept responsibility and
swiftly execute the tasks at hand.
Now, as we do a bit of “stock taking”
of the year, it is very rewarding for me
to see and experience the AQS spirit.
To see how people have bravely, but
with apprehension, stepped into new
positions and roles and how they
have personally grown and made it
their own.
Thank you AQS Team, each
and every one of you, for your input
and your extra effort during 2014.
While driving the other day I
listened to a John Rowles song “If
I only had time” and I would like to
share some of it with you:
“If I only had time
Only time
So much to do
If I only had time,
if I only had time
Dreams to pursue
If I only had time they’d be
mine
Time like the wind
Those are hurrying by and
the hours just fly
Where to begin
There are mountains I’d
climb, if I’d time.”
What are my wishes for next year?
To make time during the rush of the
holidays to enjoy the things in life
that really matter. Take time to take
in the quiet moments spent with
friends and loved ones, and may
the wonder of Christmas surround
you throughout the season. During
this time of faith and family may the
true meaning of Christmas provide
you with joy. To have enough time
during next year to stop and listen to
people, simply spend time with them
and not to have to say a word, just
enough time to enjoy their company.
To you and your loved ones,
I wish you a merry Christmas and a
prosperous new year.
Until next time, make time to
make a difference. God bless.
This edition of the Beat is full of reflection on
2014, and it has been done so poetically that we
have nothing else to add. So, we have decided to
do some...(what’s the opposite of relfection?!!)...
forward thinking in this section.
Let’s fast forward to next year this time...Anika
will have gotten a regrettable tattoo (possibly a
leopard print sleeve), Talitha will have been married
twice and be living in a mansion and Topaz will be
running a kitty hotel, meow.
On a serious note though...a year from now, as
we sit together and work on the Nov/Dec 2015
edition of the Beat, we will look back and marvel at
how far we, and AQS, have come. The growth and
innovation is inevitable. We are so proud to be part
of this incredible journey and have never been quite
so excited for the future of AQS. We see plenty of
glitter on the horizon
(hence all the shiny shit in this edition)!
The AQS Magic Factory
At this time of year we all need a little bit of magic in our lives as we wrap
things up and get ready to spend much needed time with loved ones.
Here at AQS we are all about the Family and providing you,
our valued partner/customer/family member with a reason to smile.
This is how our products would be used in a toy manufacturing factory, adding
that extra sparkle to the festive season.
This factory would be
kept expertly clean with
the use of our vertical
multi-stage DL pumps.
They provide high
head for superior highpressure cleaning and
could also be used to
pump away dirty water
from the sumps.
3
Our end suction DZA pump would
be used to transfer water to and
from the cooling tower, keeping
this factory and its equipment cool
and optimally efficient.
To brighten things up, pigments would
be transferred and paints mixed and
pumped using our Versa-Matic 1” E1
diaphragm
pumps. A
guaranteed
shiny finish
for your toy
train!
This Sandpiper PB¼ pump
would be used to pump the
sulfuric acid into batteries for
the toys. because
gift-giving just isn’t
the same without
the “choo-choo” of a
battery-powered train!
2014 in 3 words: Sharing Wow Experiences
Hope for 2015: Taking our interactive learning across the country
have learned so much.
I
.
t is the summer of 1642, the Grand
Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinando II
de’Medici discusses the research
needed to
help his
pump makers
build him
a pump
with better
suction
capability.
The
de’Medici
family
was the custodian of the Florentine
fountains and the Duke needed to
impress. Those proficient in the field
of natural sciences had to make this
happen for him. As he understood it,
the current designs in water pumps
were not capable of breaking the
problematic 10 meter suction lift
limitation. Pumps at the time, as with
any new technology of the day, were
expensive and custom-made by those
with money. He asked the young
mathematician and physicist, Torricelli,
to explore the nature of this suction lift
limitation.
It still surprises me how many
technical people, and many of those
we have met during our extensive
interaction around the country this
year, still struggle with the concept
that pumps don’t suck. How is it
possible that 400 years after the initial
limitation was recorded we still find it
difficult to wrap our minds around this
science? Maybe it is the same belief
5
that we as customers can
somehow have more than
what is possible.
The new target
position of the pump was
set at 15m above water
level. The Duke, not a
scientist but a filthy rich
banker, felt that Torricelli’s
mathematical
prowess
would do the trick. Always
nice if you have some
money to throw at a
problem.
Where did the 10m
limit come from anyway?
One of the leading minds of the time,
Galileo, knew that pumps could not
suck (lift was not yet termed) more
than 10m although he was not able to
explain why. He believed that pumps
sucked, as proven by his designs. He
also felt that air pressure had no role
to play in this ability. Galileo was
no stranger to the pump game. He
patented a new design in 1594 and
the marketing information stated that
it will supply a continuous flow of
water whilst driven by two horses (and
then we complain about
our energy costs). This is
almost 50 years prior to the
attempt to understand the
science behind the pump’s
ability to lift liquids.
Torricelli took up
the challenge and began
his research into why his
predecessor, Galileo, felt
that air had no weight and
thus had no role to play
.
in pump design.
His
experimentation lead to
the development of the
first barometer and he
noted that the column
of mercury would drop
no more than 760mm
in the 1m tube when
turned upside down
into a bowl. What was
preventing the tube from
running empty? The only
explanation would be
that air did indeed have
weight and a balance
between the gas and
liquid was reached. Could this mean
that Galileo was wrong? He was not a
man known for making mistakes. To
prove this new theory Torricelli showed
that the level in the tube would rise
and fall as he climbed the stairs of the
highest tower in town, proving that
altitude had something to do with it.
The discovery was not what
the Duke wanted to hear but at least
they had a solid answer for why they
could not get pumps to lift water more
than 10m. Air pressure at sea level was
as good as it was going to get. It seems
as if we are living at the bottom of an
ocean of air after all. The very weight
of the air, at its maximum at the coast,
is responsible for pushing water up the
suction pipe of the pump from where
it can be pressurised. Fortunately
engineers are creative people and we
find simple solutions to work with the
rules of nature. The beautiful fountains
of Italy are testament to their ingenuity.
very time I open the door to this
scourge named OPUD (over
promise under deliver), I stand
amazed at how easily I have been
seduced.
It finds its way into your life
like a Facebook friend whom you
never knew at school, but keeps
asking you to like things. I encounter
OPUD everywhere around me and
smile wryly when I see its impact at
work and home. Why does this evil
twin have such a profound influence
on our everyday existence?
But then again who wants to
under promise? That sounds terrible.
Shouldn’t we just over promise and
do what we can—it’s the effort that
counts, right?
“Like a Facebook friend...
keeps asking you to like
things.”
Apparently not and this is
why:
Before courts, laws and complex
social systems, we had promises—
the assurance that something would
be done. Promises are still one of
the most important tools we have to
help us navigate social encounters.
Your
brain
wants
consistency, it needs it. So when
someone makes a promise that
something will happen, our brain
believes that it will, which is
quite comforting for the mind.
When a promise isn’t fulfilled,
that consistency your brain was
counting on disappears. It’s not only
a breach of trust and expectation—
it’s a violation of one of the most
fundamental social norms that
people have. This goes way beyond
disappointment, it alters the way
people perceive and interact with us.
Broken promises cause
us to want to punish and seek
revenge upon the promise breaker.
These feelings impact any future
interactions between the two parties
involved.
Three ways to help you keep a
promise:
you are not able to answer how long
keep
promises
because it helps to build the
foundation necessary for maintaining
and evolving relationships. The
larger the promise, the greater the
obligation is to fulfil it.
1. Ask yourself if the promise is
necessary
You should make a promise out
of your genuine desire to follow
through, not because you feel an
obligation to do so. Consider what
you are trying to achieve by making
this promise and whether or not it
There are four reasons we can be obtained by making a smaller,
more manageable promise.
1. To create obligation
2. To regulate and direct behaviour
ike clockwork we get the message; “It
is that time of the month again and we
need your article for The Beat by such
and such a date”. You feel like looking
over your shoulder because it cannot
be your turn again. It felt like yesterday
that you wrote the last one. Then comes
the shocker – it is the last edition of the
year, please give us your review of 2014
and your expectations for 2015. That is
when you know that looking over your
shoulder is not going to help. It is time,
it is your turn.
If I have to sum up 2014 – it was
fast, it was hectic and it was dramatic. It
is a year that will go down in history as
eventful. Locally, and globally, we went
through sickness and health, from riches
to rags and also from rags to riches. We
were in it together, the “til’ death do us
part” togetherness. There were happy
days – ecstatically so – days when you
wished you could hold onto time and
stretch it, and then there were sad days
– very emotional – when all you wanted
was to see the end of the day, hoping
that you can forget and that the pain
will be less, and then there were difficult
days – really difficult days – when you
wanted to give up and wished that time
would fly by, in the hope that the next
day will be better. But no matter what
kind of days you experienced– we all
had to live with it, throughout 2014 (like
in a marriage).
“the “til’ death do us part”
togetherness”
When I think about 2015, I
am excited. It is a new, blank page and
Diana Prinsloo
t Support
Director
we can colour it in. I came across a
colour-in book for adults the other day
and immediately bought myself one.
I then bought crayons too– the variety
nowadays is fantastic. I can’t wait for the
holidays to begin so that I can colour in.
And I can’t wait for 2015. I want
to explore, look for new opportunities,
I want to enjoy doing “old” things in a
new way. I don’t want to over-argue
things and end up doing nothing. I want
to find a way to do things, not an excuse
not to do it.
Let’s take 2015 by storm.
May you all have a blessed holiday
season, Merry Christmas and a happy
New Year.
