NEW LOGO — NEW BUILDING
Some exciting changes are happening
in the Caro Chamber! Have you
heard about the office moving?
Ransford-Wasik has purchased the
present building from the City of
Caro and it will be the future home of
Intermission Deli. Plans are that
the Chamber will be moving to
a remodeled office at 243 North
State Street (one block east) in
late Spring. The building is
located between A Cut Above
and Tobacco Road.
I f yo u ha v e re ne wed yo ur
membership for 2012, you have
received a new cling for your door/
window with the new Chamber logo.
The logo was designed by Chamber
member Travis Thompson of
WebVenture. (He was featured in the
November/December issue with a
First Dollar certificate presentation.)
You will be seeing more of the logo on
the stationery when we move to the
new address. Before the year is over
hopefully there is a new look to the
website. The logo was designed by
color and shape to represent
agriculture and growth which are
a very vital part of the business
community.
Plans are progressing for some
new events and activities which
hopefully will be a help to you
and your business as well as to the
Chamber and the community. Stay
tuned for more information as plans
develop!
Note: If you have renewed your
membership for 2012 and have not
received a cling, please let the Chamber
office know and they will get you one.
The Magical Moments Bridal Show
sponsored by the Chamber and Town &
Country Bridal was held at the Knights
of Columbus hall on Sunday, January 8.
Josephine Spaulding, the owner of Town
& Country Bridal, did a great job of
organizing the event. A nice variety of
wedding gowns plus dresses for mothers
-of–the-bride and flower girls were
modeled during the fashion show.
Tuxedos were also modeled for the
guys.
Many of the attending brides-to-be won
very nice door prizes donated by the
wide variety of vendors including
photographers, caterers, party equipment
and banquet hall rentals, DJs,
cosmeticians and other wedding
specialists.
The sponsors awarded a grand prize, a
wedding package worth $200, to
Danuell Schramski of Kinde.

We welcome Tuscola Technology Center to the Caro
Chamber. The Center opened their doors to students in
1980 as the Tuscola Area Skill Center with Bruce J. Dunn
being the first superintendent and Gary Martin the first
principal. In 1995, the name was changed to Tuscola
Technology Center. They have continued to grow and now
offer 16 programs in building trades, distributive education,
commercial arts, drafting, child care, food management,
agriculture, mechanics, nursing aide/health occupations,
data processing, steno-clerical, graphic arts, welding and
cutting, automotive mechanics, heating and air,
horticulture, automotive body, machine shop and
electronics. They have students from Akron, Fairgrove,
Caro, Cass City, Kingston, Mayville, Millington, Reese,
Unionville-Sebewaing and Vassar.
Pictured above is Shawn Petri who moved to Caro with his
wife and 6 children and began his position as principal in
July of last year. He has had 25 years of experience in
technical education. Some of his first goals for the school
are to increase technology in alternative energy, increase
career readiness through certification and licensing and
increase alignment of academics. He wants to continue to
be a part of the community by hosting meetings and events
at their
facility and participating in events in the
community. He has also joined the Kiwanis and is coaching
youth football.
We welcome Shawn and his family to Caro and the

Phil Erickson has
recently
opened
Affordable Signs and
EdenPure Parts &
Service at 142 North
State
Street
(previously Jack’s
Toyland) and has
joined the Chamber.
Phil has been working
with his dad in the sign
business since he was 12 years old. His dad Steve has had
the business since 1978, starting out with hand lettering
and advancing to computerized vinyl cutting equipment
and more. Phil says he personally likes to specialize in
realty sale signs, custom made vinyl and paper banners for
graduations, weddings, parties, clearance sales, etc. He
also details cars and motorcycles. Phil explained that he
sews the ropes directly into the vinyl to build the strongest
banners available and custom sizes to fit the customer’s
needs from 2’x6’ to 6’x50’. He has worked with many
antique car collectors and made show cards for each
vehicle. They service large customers like Burlington Coat
Factory to small businesses like Macksood’s in Flint.
Phil is also providing parts and service for EdenPure
heaters. He has done a couple dozen repairs replacing
bulbs and sensors in the units as needed. He is a registered
dealer and should soon receive his certification to do
warranty work.
Phil is open Monday - Friday from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. and
Saturday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. He may be reached at 989-6721401. We welcome these businesses to the Caro and the
Chamber.

We wish to welcome Holzworth Signs
to the Caro Chamber. Chuck is a lifelong Caro resident, in fact, the 3rd
generation to live in Caro. He and his
wife Barb have taught in Tuscola
County schools for 33 years and are now
retired. Chuck began doing sign work as
a senior at the Caro High School in
1973. One of his teachers asked him to
do a business sign because he was good
in art. Chuck says, “I would never have
guessed it would develop into a small
business.”
He received a teaching
degree from CMU with a major in art
and taught art at Millington High
School. During those years he did sign
work along with taxidermy work on the
side.
For the first 20 some years of sign work,
he did everything with a paint brush and
enamel paints. In 1990, he gave in to the
age of computers and vinyl lettering.
One of the things he feels that sets him
apart from most sign companies is his
art degree and experience of over almost
4 decades. The design aspect and
dealing with people have definitely been
enhanced by being an art teacher for all
of those years. He does residential and
commercial - business store fronts,
substrates and glass, farms, vehicle
lettering, boats, etc.
As far as future goals, he doesn’t want to
get away from the small town business.
He enjoys the personal service aspect meeting new people and doing art and
sign work that makes them happy and
appreciative.
Holzworth Signs is based out of their
home at 3696 East Bevens Road. Their
hours are generally 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Monday - Saturday, but those hours are
flexible. He may be reached at 989-6735295.
days a year.
A First Dollar Presentation welcoming
Caro Motor Sports to the Caro
business community was done a few
weeks ago. Their showroom of 3000
square feet, complete with a service
department, is located on the east end of
Caro at 1660 East Caro Road. They have
friendly and helpful certified mechanics
that work on any make or model of
motorcycles - on and off road, ATVs,
snowmobiles, etc. They have recently
obtained some new equipment for tire
balancing. Along with parts and
accessories, they have clothing for
winter sports.
Manager Dean Burkle is a life long Caro
resident. He is planning an open house
and ride in the spring. Stop in to see
Dean and his staff - Jacob Tussey and
Randy Thompson - or give them a call at
989-673-8500.

CARO FARMERS MARKET
Plans and preparations are being made
for the 2012 Caro Farmers Market
season which will begin on May 5.
Katherine Andrews, from Fostoria, has
been hired as the Market Manager. She
plans to use her education in health
services and business management to
promote the Market. She has created
and marketed her own business as an
antique and country décor dealer using
both established retail venues and
outdoor markets, along with other
experience that will be beneficial in her
position as manager.
Applications and other information
have been sent to food and craft
vendors on our mailing list, but may
also be obtained on our website:
carochamber.org. We are looking
forward to a great season!
DOWNTOWN TASK FORCE
by Margie Sylvester
I want to thank the downtown
businesses for their generous donations
of gifts and gift certificates for the
Gingerbread Festival and the Caro 150
Winter Fest drawings. We had a great
turnout at both events. A huge thank
you goes to everyone that helped with
the drawings: Cathy Cabala, Pete
O’Brien, Judy Wright, Joei Spaulding,
and Gloria Snyder.
Our coupon book campaign had over
30 businesses participating with a
variety of specials. We appreciate the
help of all the volunteers and
businesses to make this coupon book a
huge success. We look forward to a
year of fun and activities in downtown
Caro.

CITY OF CARO
We want to

our Mayor.

November
and for the
efforts and support to our community.
He was born in 1955 in the old Caro
Hospital. After some time away he
came back and has been a resident of
Caro for 30 years. He has been married
to Teri for 32 years and has 2 children
in college and one interning. His
hobbies are hunting and working with
local government.
Although he is new to the mayorship
position, he has served on the
governing body for the Village/City of
Caro for 21 years. He was Mayor Pro
tem for 8 years and Finance Chair for
over 10 years. During that time he said,
“I have seen major positive changes in
our community that I was proud to be a
part of.”
Mayor Pouliot believes we have a great
community in which to live, work, shop
and play and he is looking forward to
ser ving as o ur mayor. He is
encouraging us to get involved in the
community in some way or another perhaps by volunteering your services
on one of the new City or Council
committees that are being formed for
the year or one of our community
events which are all based on
volunteerism. Find or make an
opportunity to serve and volunteer in
our community. He says, “I believe that
we live in a GOOD community, but by
us volunteering for service, we are able
to make it a GREAT community.”
The mayor believes the characteristics
of downtown are critical to our City.
Even while we are seeing some of the
worst economic times in recent years,
we are still seeing good things.
Individuals are investing and
businesses are being started. He
encourages businesses to be positive
about our festivals and events and be
welcoming, friendly and provide the
best possible service.
Mayor Pouliot says, “I look forward to
serving as your mayor and in service
to our GREAT community in which
we live, work, shop and play.”

all of her law firm members to be on

Our Mission: “The mission of
the Caro Chamber of
Commerce is to create a
positive and productive
environment where business
can grow and prosper, while
enhancing the quality of life in
the Caro area.”
A year of celebration is underway at
Osentoski Realty & Auctioneering.
The company is marking its 40th
anniversary of serving residents
throughout the Thumb.
David Osentoski and his mother,
Marie, started the company at the
family farm along M-53 in 1972.
“We always hoped the business
would be successful, but no one
could have guessed it would grow
into the business it is today,” David
mused. “We have many, many
blessings to be thankful for – first
and foremost, our clients and loyal
sales agents. We have some agents
who joined us in the very first years,
and they are still with us today.”
David’s father, Ira, had already
established the successful
auctioneering side of the business in
1950. Osentoski Auction Service is a
premier auction company, serving
families and businesses throughout
the Greater Thumb area. Auction
fliers and announcements can be
previewed
online
at
www.osentoskiauction.com.
“We are very excited about some of
the change and improvements we
have planned,” David said. “We will
be announcing these as they become
available to the public.” One
improvement already implemented is
the company’s social media presence
online. Osentoski Realty now has fan
pages on Facebook, where new
listings or price changes are often
posted before announced in local
print media. Thumb area residents
also can follow Osentoski Realty
updates on Twitter. Many Osentoski

CARO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
AFTER HOURS
Don’t miss these evenings of fun,
refreshments, and networking with other businesses in the area!
The last After Hours of 2011 was held at The
Gardens at Grice’s. Their spacious facility was
beautifully decorated and it was a nice
Christmasy time of visiting and networking.
Pictured are Trent, Trevor & Diana Grice.
Give them a call at 989-672-8733 and let them
help with your events.

After Hours in 2012 was hosted by Yellowbook

very cold wintry evening but the event was well
attended, and we met some new Caro business
people. Pictured are staff that work in our area:
(L-R) Tracy Schaper, Barb Taylor, Larry
Umbras, Diane Laney and Jackie Heiden.

Wisdom Of The Week
The highest courage is to dare to be yourself in the face
