Dress for winter!
Canada has extreme weather conditions. The
winters can be very cold and frost bite can happen
within minutes. Exposure to the cold can be
hazardous, or even life-threatening.
Your body's extremities, such as the ears, nose,
fingers and toes, lose heat the fastest.
Exposed skin may freeze, causing frostbite.

► Clothing should protect you from cold and
the wind.
► Protect head, feet, hands, and face.
► Cover your head. Up to 40 percent of body
heat can be lost when the head is exposed
► Footgear should be insulated to protect
against cold and dampness.
► Dress in layers, wearing warm,
waterproof/resistant clothing

What to
wear in
winter?
HANDS: Mitts or Gloves protect from cold
and wet. Mitts keep hands warmer because the
fingers close together generate heat. Gloves are
alright if they are well insulated inside and
waterproof on the outside. For children, mitts that
are waterproof and insulated on the inside are the
best choice. Wear larger sized mittens over your
gloves. Keep extra mittens and gloves in the car,
house or school bag.
BODY: A winter jacket or coat is very
important! Look for:
► A jacket or coat with a wind resistant layer.
► A jacket lined on the inside with a fleece or
acrylic wool blend is warmest.
► A jacket or coat with a hood can help protect
from the wind and cold.
HEAD: A Toque or hat that covers the ears is very
important. You lose a lot of heat from your head! Ears
get cold very quickly.
FACE: Wear a scarf to protect the chin, lips and
cheeks. Faces are extremely susceptible to frostbite.
FEET: Winter boots keep feet warm and
dry. Look for boots that are:
► Water proof
► Thick, non-slip tread on bottom
► Insulated with fleece or other warm lining Wide
and low heel
► Big enough to wear 2 pairs of socks
Layer up!
The best way to keep warm is to wear several layers
of clothes. When it’s really cold, 3 or more layers under clothing (shirt and leggings or long
underwear), plus long sleeved shirts and/or
sweaters, and long pants will keep you warm.
Cotton absorbs moisture (sweat). Instead of cotton
wear acrylic, fleece, wool and cotton/acrylic blends.
Wear two pairs of socks - wool or wool blend if
possible.
It is extremely important to be well prepared and
well-dressed every day. If providing winter clothing
is difficult, please let the school or your SWIS know.
They could direct you to appropriate resources.
