It had to give way to the construction of the Hunsrück Railway and was rebuilt on its current site as a water tower for steam engines. It now houses a winery and the boiler room for regional wine tasting. Heerstr. 197 (Bop. town centre near station) Open Mon. to Fri. 10.00 am to 6.00 pm, Saturday 10.00 am to 2.00 pm [email protected] TOWN MAP: B 7 “Bodobrica” Roman Fort Places worth seeing St. Severus Church The twin-towered parish church of St. Severus (13 th century), built in the late Romanesque style over the original Roman military baths, has a rich architectural structure and decoratively painted arches with the legend of St. Severus. The Triumphal Cross (13 th century), the font (5th century) and the early Christian gravestones are particularly worth seeing. Marktplatz 7 Tel. +49 6742 - 2315 | Catholic Congregation of St. Severus TOWN MAP: D “Bodobrica” Roman Fort Roman history at every turn. Boppard was one of the most important Roman settlements on the Middle Rhine. As a direct result of Julius Caesar's triumphal campaigns in Germania, this region also came under Roman control. The area was formerly occupied by the Celts who gave the name “BAUDOBRIGA” to their ancient settlement. After traces of early Roman occupation at the start of the Mühltal, not far from what now constitutes the western borders of the town, in the middle of the fourth century work began on a substantial fortification called BODOBRICA, from which the present name BOPPARD is derived. The proportions of the late Roman fortress, which is located right on the banks of the Rhine, are impressive. It measures around 1,010 by 505 feet, forming a rectangle of around 4.7 hectares. The walls are 10 ft. thick to the inland side and 8 ft. thick towards the Rhine. It was 29 ft. high and thus presented an impressive obstacle to intended attack. In addition, on the inland side, the fortress boasted 20 horseshoe-shaped towers, each at regular intervals of about 88 ft., which offered additional protection against a possible attack from that direction. Later times became too disturbed for the Roman occupiers and they finally left the Rhine, the former ancient fortress formed the heart of the settlement from which the current town developed. Today, Boppard's streets and squares vibrate with modern life, but its origins are still clearly visible. We can see the ruins of Roman occupation with its mighty fortification, which still surrounds the current town centre, and indeed the walls of this Roman fortress are the best preserved in Germany. Angertstraße / Kirchgasse | Tel. +49 6742 - 3888 | Tourist Information Boppard TOWN MAP: C 8 Carmelite Church The Gothic Carmelite Church (14 th / 15 th century) houses a rich interior, including tombs and choir stalls (15 th century). The Carmelite veneration of Mary can be seen in various representations of the Virgin, including the “Grape Madonna” (outside), the “Madonna with Rosary” and “In Piety”. The former cloisters (18 th century) now house the town administration. Karmeliterstraße Tel. +49 6742 - 2315 | Catholic Congregation of St. Severus TOWN MAP: E Church of Christ The new Romanesque revival style “Church of Christ” was inaugurated in the presence of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1852. The interior soars up to a dome-like vault supported by slender columns. The south wing of the atrium was turned through 90 degrees in 1975 due to the building of the federal highway. Pastorsgasse 9 d Tel. +49 6742 - 2343 | Parish office TOWN MAP: F 9 Places worth seeing The Baroque Church of St. Pancras Places worth seeing Mustard Mill in the Monastery of St. Martin Surrounded by a wall and in the middle of a former cemetery in Herschwiesen, stands the hall church of St. Pancras (1744 - 46). Its Baroque architecture and the fact that its furnishings are so consistently true to the period make it an interesting place to visit. Another place of pilgrimage is the miraculous image of the “Black Madonna” in Windhausen. Experience a guided tour and demonstration in our historic mustard mill. See the careful manufacturing of delicate types of mustard. Afterwards, you can sample these Middle Rhine delicacies, along with delicious, cold pressed rapeseed oils, all free of charge. The origins of the church of St. Bartholomew (Romanesque tower) go back to the early 12th century (the early Gothic choir dates from around year 1250). The imposing vicarage (a former priory / 18 th century) overlooks the listed Baroque garden. The “Teehäusje” is the oldest half-timbered house in Boppard and dates back to the year 1519 in the late Gothic period. Today the tea house is home to a small tea shop with a tea room. Because of its structureless appearance and the square west tower (15 th century) the church gives a very defiant impression. The interior of the church houses a very old baptismal font made of basalt lava which is well worth seeing. Boppard-Holzfeld | Tel. +49 6741- 2352 (Incumbent: Mr. B. Trepke) 10 Behind the large Baroque building of the former Marienberg Monastery (18 th century) which towers over Boppard, there is an extensive park belonging to the monastery, laid out as a landscaped park in the 19th century. The vast majority of the trees date back to this time. A large pond and paths oozing with atmosphere entice visitors to explore the surroundings. Boppard-Marienberg | Tel. +49 6742 - 3888 | Tourist Information Boppard TOWN MAP: I 11 Places worth seeing Half-timbered houses in the historic part of the town There are many old half-timbered houses to admire in the town centre, e.g. in Kronengasse, in Untere Marktstraße, in the market place and in the Balz district. Of special interest are “Haus Bodenbach” where the gables stand on posts and are richly carved, and the “Haus zur Arche” (16 th / 17 th century), both of which are in the Oberstraße. Eltzer Hof One example of the many medieval residences belonging to the privileged at that time in Boppard is the carefully restored “Eltzer Hof”. The building to the rear dates back to the 16 th century, while the main building at the front is from the 18 th century. The coat of arms of the noble families of Eltz (lion) and Faust von Stromberg (chessboard) adorn the gable. The Healing Spa of Bad Salzig The healing spa of Bad Salzig with its park In 1901, Captain Theodor von Baginski, known as Hoffmann, began to drill in the area to find salty water and establish a spa. The healing waters of the Barbara and Leonora springs were to provide the basis for this bathing culture in the healing spa of Bad Salzig. The grand opening was celebrated in 1907. The healing waters are now no longer used for therapy in the clinic. Nevertheless, the source is still being preserved. Both locals and visitors to Bad Salzig can enjoy the water at the drinking fountain. The classical bath houses are attached to a sauna and a therapy pool in new buildings. You can also find the drinking hall designed by the artist Ursula Bertram here. The arcades of ancient trees and landscaped areas of the adjoining park which surrounds the Middle Rhine Clinic are an invitation to walk and linger a while. The vineyards of Bopparder Hamm which dominate the sweeping loop of the Rhine are visual proof of Boppard's reputation as the home of outstanding winegrowing estates. The south-facing slopes enjoy an ideal angle to the sun, are able to utilise the river's body of water as thermal storage and are well protected both from the west and from the east, which is even more favourable for the mini-climate. In short, it constitutes the optimum environment for the cultivation of excellent wine. The Bopparder Hamm vineyard covers an area of 75 20 hectares and thus is the largest single vineyard in the Middle Rhine. It is divided up into highclass individual estates, such as Elfenlay, Fässerlay, Wein grube, Mandelstein, Feuerlay, Ohlenberg and Engelstein. The uncontested star among the vines is still the Riesling, which, because of the deep, weathering rock with its slate content, here produces a wine of a quite distinctive character. Typical aromas such as apple, mint and various spices give the Boppard Riesling an unmistakable flavour and offer the wine connoisseur wonderful taste ex- periences. However, the best of sites could not produce a wine of such high quality without the passionate commitment and know-how of local winegrowers who really know how to bring forth jewels of taste from their wines. Work in the Bopparder Hamm vineyards is still typically manual and is done almost exclusively on the laborious, steep slopes. Anyone coming here at any time of the year will see winegrowers busy pruning, tying in the vines and looking after the leaves and grapes. Walks and rambles through the Bopparder Hamm lead directly to the nursery for the vines, which will one day produce the fully ripe grapes for wine. A highlight of exploring the vineyards is the “Middle Rhine Spring Wine Festival” which takes place at the end of April and offers a selection of good wine and culinary delights. Around a dozen Boppard winegrowers, working in tandem with catering companies, offer a very special, sensual Rhine and wine experience. The highlight of the Boppard wine event is the annual Wine Festival at the end of September and beginning of October. Throughout the year however there are friendly wineries, cosy open-air festivals and of course many individual wine tastings at the vineyards themselves which are all part of the aromatic vine trail which both locals and visitors love to follow. 21 Vintners Vintners Name & address Wine tasting & cellars Opening times Facilities Seating Location Weingut Rolf Bach Beyerhofgasse 8 | Tel. +49 6742 - 3309 Wine tasting, wine sales Daily from 4.00 pm.
