Enhanced by illustrations, maps, and letters, this
book provides a museum-quality experience detailing the thrilling accomplishments of Lafayette
and his legendary warship, the Hermione, in support of the colonists’ cause during the American
Revolutionary War. Lafayette, on a secret mission
from King Louis XVI, was to inform George Washington and the Congress that France would support
the American colonies in their conflict with Great
Britain. Once on American soil, Lafayette shed his
diplomatic role for an important military assignment, helping to mastermind the decisive Virginia
campaign that brought hostilities to an end. While
Lafayette excelled on the battlefield, his ship, the
Hermione, was burnishing its own legend as part
of the crucial maneuvers that led to the defeat
of the much larger British navy—and ensured the
American victory. The descriptions offer fascinating
insights into the building of the arsenal in Rochefort
under Louis XIV and Colbert, the development of
the French navy, 18th-century naval strategy, and
shipbuilding techniques. Also profiled is the ambitious undertaking of the nearly two decades-long
project to meticulously recreate the Hermione and
prepare it for a new transatlantic voyage, again
on a mission of friendship and goodwill.
Emmanuel de Fontainieu is the director of the
Centre International de la Mer in Rochefort and
a member of the Steering Committee of the Hermione-Lafayette Association. He lives in France.
Dr. Henry Kissinger is a world-renowned writer,

New York City. Ségolène Royal is a prominent member of the French Socialist Party, the president of the

Against the backdrop of Guatemala, this book
presents portraits of artisans working in the ancient
traditions of the Maya paired with insights into the
creation of the textiles and the events that have
affected their work. Weaving, spinning, and basket
making have sustained the Maya economically
and culturally against the pressures of change and
a 36-year civil war that decimated their population.
Their persistence in continuing traditional art has
created some of the loveliest, most colorful textiles the world has ever known. Artisans share their
personal histories, hopes, and dreams along with
the products of their hands and looms. Their stories
show determination in the face of unimaginable
loss and hardship which instill an appreciation for
the textiles themselves and for the strong people
who create them.
“Authors Deborah Chandler and Teresa Cordón
and photographer Joe Coca carry us to a new
level of appreciation for the achievement of Guatemala’s artists. The authors’ deep knowledge and
love of their subjects shine on every page.”

This richly-illustrated book depicts 750 years of Jewish history as well as Jewish life in Berlin today. The
Prussian capital was, for many centuries, the center
of Jewish life in Germany. Its Jewish citizens strongly
influenced the city’s cultural and literary life and led
the way in the sciences, from the 18th century salon
of Rachel Varnhagen to the cabarets of the Weimar Republic. However, economic crisis, hyper-inflation, and the depression of 1929 provided rich soil
for the growth of anti-Semitism and ultimately led
to the Holocaust. Today, after tens of thousands of
immigrants from Russia and Israel have arrived in
the capital, Jewish life and culture are flourishing
once again.
“Jews loved Berlin —a city that alternately freed
and destroyed them. Carefully recounting this confounding tale, Jews in Berlin honors the complexity
of an unfathomable relationship.”

Museum of Forbidden Art; the Topography of Terror
Museum, which includes the former Gestapo headquarters; and landmarks such as the Reichstag, the

Beginning 24 months before WWI and the Armenian
genocide is a love story that unravels a piece of
100-year-old history seen through the eyes of the
young, courageous, and unyielding Anno
and Daron. In an era of major human disaster
and violence, this historical novel offers an easy,
accessible understanding of what atrocities mean
to regular people and how love overcomes the
most unimaginable pain. From the colors used to
dye the rugs, to the distances between the villages
where guns were smuggled, to the fragrance of
wild mushrooms snapping and sizzling on an open
fire, each detail makes the reader truly participate
in the life and struggle of the characters. Five years
of research through gathering materials and traveling to the real-life village that is depicted in this novel, amid gunfire and bombings, has been poured
into a love story that will either be savored by the
reader or read in a frenzy to discover the fate of
Anno and Daron.
“Powerful and sensitive, this tragic novel helps
illuminate a historical episode still too little known
or acknowledged.”
—Kirkus Reviews
“Boyadjian based parts of the book on the stories
of her own grandparents, survivors of the Armenian
genocide. That comes through, both in the description and in the way the characters react to the
ever-present dangers, and makes As the Poppies
Bloomed a moving work.”

Once Upon the Congo
A Chris Zacharius Thriller
Chap Harper
Blending well researched history and exciting fiction, this novel of adventure, danger, and romance
begins with an expedition to the remote diamond
quarry originally located by the great adventurer
Henry Stanley in 1887. The site of the mine is so secluded and dangerous that expeditions are limited
to one in 1966 and another in 2010. The fearless
explorers face angry pygmies wielding poisoned
arrows, unwelcoming wild animals, an unforgiving
river, and rebel insurgents who are determined to
take any uncovered diamonds.

Featuring more than 60 authors, this stunning volume brings a fresh take on the bestiary, the dictionary of mythological creatures, by imagining
how beasts such as gorgons, minotaurs, and manitchores would cope in the modern age. Offering
informational entries and short stories, the collection
ranges from the horrific to the humorous, reacquaints readers to classic beasts, and introduces
the newly discovered, thriving creatures of the
cyber age like the meme mosquitoes, trashsquatches, and urbantelopes. From the casino where the
griffin has taken up residence, to the gorgon’s new
occupation and love interest, to the now happy
sphinx who has moved to Manhattan, this bestiary is
a unique and contemporary twist on the creatures
that have captivated the human imagination since
ancient times.

Set against the backdrop of The Wizard of Oz, this
tale is both a chilling story of abuse and a timeless
romance. Sixteen-year-old good girl Dorothy just

Donuts). There, she meets Joey—a bad boy who
tells no one about the catastrophic domestic violence he witnesses at home. Can these two lovers
survive peer pressure, Joey’s reputation, and his alcoholism? And then there’s his family secret which is
about to be unleashed. Joey’s words are scattered
on the page—reflecting his broken state. Dorothy is
the voice of reason—until something so shattering
happens that she, too, may lose her grip. Can their
love endure, or will it melt away? Drawing from true
