SA FOOTBALL’S MULTICULTURAL TEAM
F
or what is Australia’s only
indigenous game, Aussie
Rules football has been
blessed with myriad
multicultural influences since
its inception.
In South Australia, the
heritage of our footballers has
naturally followed the cultural
development of our state from the early German and
English settlers to the postwar European migrants to
now and the current Asian
and African migrants who are
starting to make their mark on
our great game.
Multiculturalism is a difficult
term to define. While it loosely
refers to ALL cultures, the
criteria for the SA Football
Multicultural Team of the
Century were narrowed to
include only non-English
speaking countries.
As such, players including
Port Adelaide’s Clive
Waterhouse, who was born in
the UK, was excluded from the
final team. However, even with
this condition, there remained
hundreds of SANFL players
who were eligible for
selection.
The selection was also
capped to only include
players born overseas or
those players whose parent or
grandparent were born
overseas. Players such as
Randall Gerlach, Tony
Antrobus, Grenville Dietrich
and Terry Von Bertouch were
ineligible under this
restriction.
The primary purpose of the
SA Football Multicultural Team
of the Century is to share the
heritage and stories of SANFL
footballers from different eras.
Some of the selected players
have names hinting at their
heritage - others do not. Some
are migrants, while others
carry on their cultural ties
through their parents and
grandparents.
All have contributed to the
ever-changing cultural fabric
of South Australian football.
THE CRITERIA
a) the player must have played senior League football;
b) if from interstate, the player must have moved to SA primarily to play League football, and;
b) player must have been born overseas in a non-English speaking country or have a parent or grandparent born in a
non-English speaking country.

SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - ROUND 18 - LEAGUE FOOTY
Robbert Klomp
OF THE CENTURY
Alan Didak: The Magpies kid
who became a Collingwood
legend. The son of Croatian
parents, Didak played 15
games for Port in 2000 before
heading interstate to don the
black and white in the AFL. He
has, to date, played almost 150
games for the ‘Pies.
Rudi Mandemaker:
“Ruuuuddddiiiii!” The call from
the sidelines was
unmistakable in the ‘80s. The
son of Dutch parents,
Mandemaker powered through
seven seasons with Central
District, booting 475 goals in
141 League appearances. He
was the League’s leading
goalkicker in 1989.
Rene Van Dommelle: The son
of migrants, Van Dommelle
was a Doggies powerhouse
over three decades, totalling
273 games and 162 goals
between 1977 and 1992.
Jason Porplyzia: A modernday inclusion. A star for both
West Adelaide and the Crows,
Porplyzia’s Ukrainian heritage
goes back to his grandfather,
who emigrated to Australia
during WWII. Porplyzia played
74 games for the Bloods and
has played almost sixty
matches to date for the Crows.
Milan Faletic: This dual
premiership player’s parents
and grandparents were born in
Slovenia. Faletic played 229
games for Port Adelaide and
West Torrens between 1971
and 1983, earning him a spot in
the coveted SANFL 200 Club.
Justin Cicolella: This current
Eagles gun has just recently
played his 200th League
match, having debuted at
senior level in 1998. His
grandfather was born in Italy.
Scott Camporeale: Already
an inclusion in the AFL/VFL
Italian Team of the Century,
this All-Australian played 15
games with the Eagles before
moving to Carlton and then
Essendon for what was a
stellar AFL career.
Mark Ricciuto: The team’s
captain owes his Italian
heritage to his father. The
Adelaide captain started his
football career with West
Adelaide (26 games) before
going on to star in 312 games
for the Crows. A Brownlow
Medallist, premiership captain
and All-Australian, he is a
worthy inclusion in any SA
Football Team of the Century.
Aldo Floreani: Floreani,
whose parents were born in
Italy, holds the distinction of
being the first player of Italian
heritage to play 200 SANFL
games. A talented West
Torrens midfielder, Floreani
played 206 League games
from 1969 to 1980.
at Alberton not only for his
skill but also for his integral
role in seven of the Magpies
modern-day premierships. He
played 236 matches for Port
between 1985 and 1997.
Peter Phillipou: Phillipou’s
parents hail from the north of
Greece and are of Macedonian
decent. They migrated as
teenagers in 1938 and met in
Australia. Phillipou played a
spectacular 250 games for West
Torrens from 1967 to 1984 (with
a short break in between).
Jerry D’Antochia: A Redlegs
veteran of 174 matches (19861988 and 1990-1997) has an
Italian heritage.
Lloyd Zucker: This six-time
premiership player has
German roots. Zucker played
183 games for Port Adelaide
between 1949 and 1959.
Frank Stemper: At half back
flank, Stemper played 214
games for Norwood and
Woodville between 1970 and
1982. His inclusion in the team
is owed to his parent’s
German heritage.
Kim Klomp: While his brother
Robbert was born in the
Netherlands, Kim was born in
Adelaide to Dutch parents. He
played 210 games for North
Adelaide and Sturt between
1982 and 1992.
Bohdan Jaworskyj: First a
Roosters player, now a
Roosters CEO. Jaworskyj was
born in Germany to a Russian
mother and Ukranian father,
emigrating to Australia in
1950. He played 202 games for
North between 1965 and 1978.
Bob Hank: A representative
from football’s post-war era,
Hank’s German roots go back
to his grandfather, Hermann.
Hank’s father was born
shortly after the family’s
migration to Australia. A dual
Magarey Medallist, 27-time
State representative and a
10-time club best-and-fairest,
Hank played 224 games for
West Torrens between 1945
and 1958.
Ron Benton: Born Ronaldo
Marco Caldana (his father was
Italian), Benton changed his
name by deed poll to adopt
his step-father’s surname.
Benton played 172 games for
West Adelaide between 1955
and 1965.
Romano Negri: Negri played
131 games for Woodville
(and later the amalgamated
Woodville-West Torrens)
between 1987 and 1995.
His parents are Italian-born.
Angelo Congear: A Port
Adelaide stalwart with 15
State games, four
premierships and three
Australian Championships
under his belt, Congear
played for the Magpies.
Andy Porplycia: An uncle to
Jason Porplyzia, Porplycia’s
father emigrated during the
war. Porplycia played 163
games for Port between 1974
and 1983, booting 150 goals.
Rene Van Dommelle
Robbert Klomp: This 18-yearold Dutchman broke into the SA
footy scene in 1973 to feature
prominently in Sturt’s golden
era during the ‘70s. In ’79,
Klomp joined Carlton and was a
player in its 1981 premiership
win. A brief interlude at
Footscray preceded a return to
the Double Blues for a final
season where he brought up
his League match total to 214.
George Fiacchi: This son of
Italian parents is still revered

TANKS FOR COUNTRY FOOTY
T
he newly-established
West End Community
Fund has reached out to footy
clubs in low-rainfall areas in
a unique bid to restore
country ovals.
The fund last week
announced it would donate 40
rainwater tanks to clubs
across the state to aid in the
upkeep of regional footy
grounds.
Lion Nathan established the
fund earlier this year to
channel money collected from
West End Brewery’s water
fountain into community
projects.
Ten football leagues have
already been announced as
lucky recipients of a 22,000
litre water tank supplied by
Team Poly and Hills Industries,
to be installed with the help of
a $1000 SA Water donation
for each site.
Over the next 18 months, 40
clubs selected by the West
End Community Fund and the
SANFL’s Community Football
Board will benefit.
Lion Nathan SA regional
director and West End
Community Fund chairman
Damien Mori said the project
would give local sports clubs
a much-needed boost.
“Many clubs across the state
have fields that are so dried
up and hard, they had to
move their home games to
other fields for the safety of
the players,” Mr Mori said.
“This is a perfect example of
the kinds of solution-based
initiatives the West End
Community Fund is looking to
support.”
SANFL Community Football
Board chairman David
Shipway noted many footy
clubs were doing it tough
because of the drought.
“In some communities, local
footy is the only regular social
engagement,” he said.
“Losing the chance to host a
home game because of the
state of the local ground is
particularly disheartening for
clubs and their players. This
initiative will provide a real
boost for local sport.”
SA Water Chief Executive
Anne Howe said the project
allowed not-for-profit regional
football clubs to capture their
own rainwater and use it to
help keep their ovals – and
their local community - alive.
“SA Water is proud to be
helping regional families to
keep playing sport and remain
active, by helping their home
grounds survive the drought,”
Anne said.
“We look forward to working
with the WECF to help keep
regional football alive and
kicking.”
THANKS TO:
THE FIRST 10 CLUBS
The first ten recipient clubs are all situated in low-rainfall areas.
In alphabetical order, they are:
1) Booleroo Melrose Wilmington – Northern Areas Football
League – Booleroo Oval
This combined club representing three small towns in the
southern Flinders Ranges region is approximately 300km north
of Adelaide. It is a large agricultural area with low rainfall and a
primary focus on grain and sheep.
6) Paskeville – Yorke Peninsula Football League
A small town situated inland at the northern end of Yorke
Peninsula and farming of grain is the main industry in the
location.
7) Peake – Mallee Football League
2) Cleve – Eastern Eyre Football League
Is a very small town in the low rainfall grain-farming Mallee
region in the eastern area of South Australia. They are a very
proud club struggling with a decline in players but determined
to survive.
Although a relatively small town, it is the largest town in Central
Eyre Peninsula and relies on rainfall to support the main
industry of grain growing in the surrounding area.
8) Riverton Saddleworth Marrabel United – North East
Football League – Riverton Oval
3) Goolwa Port Elliot –Great Southern Football League –
Goolwa Oval
This club represents three small towns about 100km north of
Adelaide in the Gilbert Valley. The area is predominantly an
agricultural industry in a low rainfall area but also has many
historical attractions.
Goolwa is located at the mouth of the River Murray which has
shrunk in size dramatically in the lower region over recent
years. This has had a negative impact on the town, particularly
its tourism. It has been a focal town used in ‘Save the Murray’
campaigns and the club is also actively supporting the
awareness programs for the plight of the river.
4) Loxton North – Riverland Football League
Loxton is situated on the River Murray in the northern reaches
of the state and this citrus and fruit growing area has suffered
in recent years with the reduction of water irrigation licenses.
5) Mallala – Adelaide Plains Football League
Situated approximately 60 km north of Adelaide, the area is a
major agricultural region for grain and vegetables.
8
SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - ROUND 18 - LEAGUE FOOTY
9) United Yeelanna – Great Flinders Football League –
Karkoo Oval
The club represents a sparsely populated area in central lower
Eyre Peninsula which includes several very small towns. The
club is located at Karkoo and reliant on cereal and sheep
agriculture.
10) Whyalla – Whyalla Football League - Bennett Oval
This is the main oval in Whyalla and used every week by clubs
for matches. Whyalla is a large city with a relatively low rainfall
and reliant on the Morgan to Whyalla pipeline for much of its
water supply.
At the July 23 launch (L-R): Catharine Piggott (Peake & District Sporting Club president), Anthony Gregurke (Peake FC president), Ann Howe (SA Water), Damien Mori
(Lion Nathan SA regional director), David Shipway (Community Football Board chairman), John Bithell (Davey Pumps) and Craig Stanley (Team Poly).

LET US ENTERTAIN YOU
Welcome to the SANFL’s inaugural ‘be active’ Multicultural Round!
This week, we celebrate the cultural diversity of SA football’s
players, volunteers and supporters.
Each of the four scheduled Saturday matches will feature
multicultural entertainment for the whole family.
PROSPECT OVAL - Tatry Polish Folklore Ensemble and the
Burundian Drumming Club
Tatry is the largest and oldest group of its kind in Australia,
having been established way back in 1958. Although it’s based
in Adelaide, it’s performed across Australia and in Europe to
much acclaim. Today the ensemble will be treating you to a
dance called the Krakoviak, which is one of the most popular
national dances of Poland.
Members of the Burundian Drumming Club – which was formed
in Adelaide two years ago – play an instrument that is
synonymous with the central African nation of Burundi.
Traditionally, these drums were played in Burundi when people
were celebrating some kind of happy or historic event. Today,
the drummers will be performing to celebrate the Multicultural
Round.
ALBERTON OVAL - Cook Islanders’ Cultural Community and
the African Voice of Peace Choir
The Cook Islanders’ Cultural Community was established in
South Australia 25 years ago. Since that time, the group has
been performing the music and dance of its South Pacific
homeland at schools and festivals, and for a range of clubs and
charities. Today, it is presenting two of its special and very
evocative drum dances.
The African Voice of Peace Choir was established in Adelaide
three years ago. Back then, it had only a few singers, from only
one African country. Today, it has 35 members, from three
central African nations – an expansion that reflects the recent
arrival of many hundreds of new African settlers in South
Australians.
GLIDEROL STADIUM @ GLENELG
City International Gospel Choir
The City International Gospel Choir was formed in 2005
by South Australians who had recently arrived from the central
African nations of Burundi and Congo. These people are among
the many hundreds of Africans who have settled in our State
over the past five years.
Today, the singers will be performing a number of gospel songs
– in English, in French, and in the African languages of Swahili
and Kirundi.
CITY MAZDA STADIUM - Greek Lyceum of South Australia and
Beats Bhangra
The Greek Lyceum of South Australia was founded in 1993, and
its role is to teach Greek dance and culture to folk both young and
old. Its performances reflect not just the rich and ancient culture of
Greece, but also the customs of Greeks living all over the world
today – including in places such as Cyprus and Australia. Today, the
Greek Lyceum will perform traditional Hellenic dancing.
The Beats Bhangra group will perform dance that originates from
the fascinating Punjab region of India. With the massive and
growing popularity of Indian culture today, this is a dance that is
known and loved across the world.
Beats Bhangra has made a name for itself around Adelaide,
regularly performing at schools and at local Indian festivals, such
as the annual Mela Festival in Elder Park.
