Sunday Special @ Prospect
As a "neutral" at Prospect on
Sunday, the scenes in those final few minutes of the match
against West were something to
savour.
The gym renovations at the
ground mean that all the North
members are now located in the
one grandstand, and it is usually
pretty full, making for one loud
voice when the Red and White
are on the march.
As the Roosters stormed home
the roars almost raised the roof
and made for a sensational atmosphere of passionate support.
Central comeback on track.
Whilst Central were celebrating
50 year old League football
memories, their on field tackling,
hard running and overall
workrate whilst dismantling the
Eagles brought back memories
of more recent times.
The Bulldog's list is strengthening and confidence building as
they now entrench a top five
berth. After the bye they will
play all of the top three teams
over their next four games, so
we will get a true idea of
whether Central are back as
premiership contenders.
It's a winter game all right.
I've been commentating SANFL
but I have never been wetter
calling a match than I was last
Friday Night at the Bay.
Recent renovations resulted in
the radio desk being relocated to
the front of the grandstand,
which is no issue unless you
have strong rain coming in from
the east.
It was back to basics for the Life
FM crew, with tarpaulins covering the critical broadcast gear,
laptops turned off to avoid getting drenched and binoculars
requiring regular cleaning to
avoid fogging up.
Thankfully after a most challenging first 15 minutes the rain lightened and the broadcast became
much smoother.

WHAT WE LEARNT
John Nankivell
Not a good week for milestones.
Round Nine of the SANFL season saw a number of different
players celebrating big career
milestones.
Unfortunately none of these
players found themselves on the
winning side. Firstly, on Friday
night loyal Glenelg stalwart, Ben
Mules, played his 200th game
for the Tigers.
Despite getting off to a good
start the Bays were reeled in by
the Panthers and eventually lost
the contest by 31 points.
Then on Saturday afternoon Eagle's skipper, Luke Powell,
played his 200th game for the
club, while teammate, Scott
Lewis, bought up his 100th
SANFL match when they took
on Central at Elizabeth .
Ryswyk's role of small forward
and clearly excelled. Gordon
kicked five goals for the match,
including three in the second
quarter, and was a big part of
the Rooster's, come from behind, nine point win over West.
In the process Gordon showed
just what a versatile footballer
he can be. North fans will welcome Ryswyk's return, but they
now know they have a player
who is more than capable of filling the hole in Ryswyk's absence.
Roosters on a roll.
Nathan Gordon is certainly a
fantastic player and at the moment his team are playing fantastic football.
North Adelaide have now beaten
every other side in the top five,
and they are the only team to
achieve this.
Their come from behind win on
the weekend over the top placed
Bloods was a sight to behold,
and while they may still sit in
third spot on the ladder they are,
in my humble opinion, the current premiership favourite.
With a hard running, attacking
and free flowing game style that
will suit the wider spaces of
Football Park, they will be very
hard to beat come Finals.
While there is plenty of footy left
this season, at the moment it
looks like the only way is up for
coach Josh Francou and his
chargers.
Again both players were left
empty handed with the Bulldogs
scoring a strong win. No, it was
not a good week for milestones
at all.
How good is Gordo?
A chill was sent through the
North Adelaide camp prior to
their clash against West on Sunday, when star player, Leigh Ryswyk, was ruled out with hamstring tightness.
However they need not have
worried as gun midfielder, Nathan Gordon, was given ……...

WUNDKE
THE WET
WHAT A WINTRY WELCOME
Despite conditions not suiting
the strong, key forward last Friday night, South Adelaide spearhead Michael Wundke proved
his worth in all types of conditions.
Round 9 was kick-started last
week with a couple of Friday
night fixtures, seeing the Parade
and the Bay hosting a couple of
important clashes.
It was also officially the first day
of winter, after a record breaking
warm Autumn, and boy, didn’t
the new season arrive with a
bang.
From sun-up that morning the
heavens opened up resulting in
a wintry down pour that essentially lasted the entire day.
Football is of course a winter
sport, but the elements were
certainly going to test the drainage system at each ground, and
in turn determine the conditions
of the various venues.
WONDERFUL
IN
In a night that was better suited
to the small, crumbing forwards
and on-ballers, the Panther's full
-forward contributed close to half
of the side's final goal tally, and
played a major part in the victory
on the road.
It was also a good return to form
for the former North Adelaide
and North Melbourne listed
player after a pretty quiet few
weeks prior to that, since kicking
four majors in the State Game
win over the NEAFL.
Having slotted just the eight majors in a month of State League
football prior to last Friday night,
in what were almost perfect Autumn conditions.
The former Ken Farmer medalist
managed to nail five crucial
goals in the torrential, soggy
conditions against the Tigers.
With a season high handful,
Wundke also nudged himself a
few goals closer to the top of the
Ken Farmer Medal race.
The current leader Andrew
Ainger - a former team-mate only managed the one goal for
the Eagles in their loss to the
Bulldogs, so Wundke now is
only two straight goals from taking the lead in that race.
WHAT WE LEARNT
HAVE THE BULLDOGS GOT
THEIR BITE BACK?
WHAT A ROOSTERS RESURGENCE
wasn't looking that way for most
of the day.
With their strong win over the
Eagles, a side considered to be
a likely fellow Finals candidate,
the Doggies have now got a few
tails waging, suggesting that
they may be back in the mix as
a legitimate Premiership contender.
Touted as the ‘Match of the
Round', I headed to Prospect
Oval on Sunday afternoon very
much looking forward to the battle ahead between two fellow top
three aspirants, in North and
West.
After being outplayed by the
Bloods for the majority of the
contest, the home side only
trailed by 15 points at the final
change, and if they played well
enough in the final term were
still in the game.
Despite their poor performance
against the Magpies the week
before, I anticipated, and tipped a
Rooster's win in FOOT-e TIMES
SA.
The Bloods had something to
say about that, kicking the first
two majors of the final stanza,
and at the seven minute mark
Josh Francou’s side were in arrears to the tune of 27 points.
After their horror 0-4 start, Central bounced back with three
consecutive victories against
sides that were considered by
most to be in the bottom half of
the ladder come Finals time.
The challenge for the new generation of pups was to match it
with a side sitting above them on
the ladder. They did exactly
this, in impressive fashion, last
week.
Based on North looking to redeem themselves and the fact
that the Bloods had again struggled to put four quarters of football together, in their tough win
over the Double Blues.
I was right with the tip, but it
Then, it just became a Rooster’s
avalanche with the home side
nailing the remaining six goals,
taking the lead at the 25 minute
mark and hanging on to record a
most memorable victory.
As much as their opposition
were somewhat disappointing, in
wet and slippery conditions, the
Roy Laird coached side looked
to have returned to the Central
of old, with intensity and tackle
pressure on the Eagles.
Arriving at Gliderol Stadium for
the Glenelg v South clash, it was
no surprise to see quite a bit of
surface water and a few muddy
puddles.
With the assistance of SACA’s
world class curator, Les Burdett,
the cricket pitch area held up
reasonably well but having seen
some vision of the game from
Coopers Stadium, it looked to
me as though the mud was a
little more prevalent at that
venue.
The real test for the Bulldogs,
however, will come over the
course of the next month. After
a bye this weekend, they face
North, Port, Norwood and West,
with three of those four sides
considered serious candidates
for the flag this year.
It is now going to be a little bit
harder for them as well, after
losing key forward Alan Obst for
4 weeks, due to suspension.
I do have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the respective
conditions of both the Elizabeth
and Prospect Ovals, which were
in pretty reasonable condition,
considering the amount of rainfall.

WHAT WE LEARNT

1) – The first piece of knowledge
taken from Round 9 was that
winter is officially here - and with
it comes many a (cold) change!
The 1000 thread count cotton
sheets get discarded in favour of
the flannelette variety, the jar of
Vicks Vaporub forces the 50
plus sunscreen tube to the back
of the medicine cupboard, Jiffy
Firelighters are added to the
shopping list as wood fires become fully functional again,
while team coloured crocheted
blankets and duffel coats are
dusted off in readiness for the
ensuing months ahead.
So with the sudden shift in climactic conditions experienced
last weekend, the need to adopt
a different approach to playing
our great game was also required and - by design - teams
were forced to dispense with the
majority of strategies and structures and implement some good
old fashioned wet weather football.
But as with any change of product, one must always be mindful
that certain “Terms and Conditions” apply! So it seems then
the ‘Dogs have finally taken
heed of the fine print on Roy
Laird’s game plan and showed
that if this is applied over four
“terms” of a match and particularly in “conditions” like that experienced at Playford Alive Oval
on Saturday afternoon, the end
product can be something quite
magnificent!
Laird’s game plan and showed
that if this is applied over four
“terms” of a match and particularly in “conditions” like that experienced at Playford Alive Oval
on Saturday afternoon, the end
product can be something quite
magnificent!
2) – And on the subject of tackling wet weather football…..wet
weather football is all about
tackling!
In Round 8, the average tackle
count for a team was 29.5, but
this pales into comparison with
the increased workload and
pressure that comes when the
grounds turn into a surface more
conducive to hosting an Ice Capades show than a match of
SANFL football.
By comparison, the average
tackle count increased to a staggering 47.25 per team last
weekend, and while the Eagles
could only amass 40 of their
own in the battle of Playford
Alive Oval, the ‘Dogs led the
pack with 63 bone-jarring apprehensions, harassing the visitors
into submission with brute force.
The down side of that encounter
was the unfortunate collateral
damage suffered by the Eagle's
Nick Joyce, in the final seconds
of the match, when a text book
tackle was taken a step too far
sending his head thumping into
the ground.
And given the amount of free
kicks paid each season for errant or over zealous tackles, it
begs the question of how much
this vital skill of the game is
practised through the grades.
The other matches also provided some startling figures, with
the Panthers laying 41 tackles
as opposed to the 71 required
by their otherwise timid opponent at the Bay on Friday night.
The ‘Legs wrapped up the Double Blues on 45 occasions out at
the Parade in the other Friday
night feature, with Sturt second
to the ball more often than not
and forced to chase hard with
49.
While in one of the comebacks
of the millennium, the Roosters
rattled the Bloods on the scoreboard, but did less of the bullocking work with 30 tackles to
the Bloods’ 39.
Drill down into these statistics
and there was one common fact.
There were a lot of sore bodies
as a result of Round 9 SANFL
action!

WHAT WE LEARNT
3) – Glenelg’s season continues
to go South! It is now the fourth
successive encounter between
the Tigers and the Panthers at
Gliderol Stadium, where the visitors have walked away with the
two points – and walk away with
them they did indeed!
With the benefit of a near full
strength side, South Adelaide
ravaged a Tiger’s outfit which
was clearly lacking in the depth
required to put a full four quarters together.
While injuries have taken their
toll on the boys at the Bay, they
aren’t the only club suffering, but
seem the one in most disrepair
and will need to find some real
character over the next few
weeks to curb the current downward trend.
by North Adelaide at Prospect
Oval on Sunday afternoon was
at a John Farnham concert, with
the Roosters raising the roof of
the main grandstand in a victory
that one could only describe as
scintillating and superlative at
the very least – and perhaps
season defining at the very best!
After spotting the 2012 Grand
Finalist a 27 point start early in
the final quarter, North Adelaide
sent a message to the entire
competition in regards to exactly
what they are about and capable
of, with an inspired effort that
had premiership contender written all over it.
Having been knocked off their
perch in no uncertain terms by
the Port Adelaide Magpies the
previous week, it seemed as
though the Rooster's match
against West Adelaide was similarly heading in “One Direction”,
but in a mercurial manner much like “Whispering Jack” –
Josh Francou’s men just kept
delivering one hit after the other!
What would have been most
pleasing for the players, coaching staff and supporters alike
was the timely turnaround of
goal kicking efficiency, which
until the final break had been at
a frustrating 50%, but exponentially improved to a match winning 75% in the last 20 minutes
of playing time.
Having taken a 3-3 win/ loss ratio into the State match break
and subsequent bye, it appears
the Tigers have almost gone into
hibernation since and will need
to awaken from this slumber
sooner rather than later to avoid
another one of “those seasons”.
But with the weeks ahead providing a schedule which includes
the current top three sides,
namely North Adelaide (rounds
10 &15), West Adelaide (round
12) and Norwood (round 14 following a bye), it looks as though
a lot of the writing may have
been placed on the wall by the
middle of July!

Todd Pfeiffer (South)
One of the most potent ball winning mid-fielders in SANFL football, Mat Suckling has been extremely consistent since arriving
from the VFL at the start of the
2011 campaign to resurrect his
AFL aspirations.
Another recruit to South
Adelaide from Rooster's
territory, Pfeiffer followed in
the footsteps of Michael
Wundke and Toby Stribling
in coming down to Noarlunga.
An outstanding junior in Victoria,
Suckling was seen as a likely
draft candidate, until a serious
knee injury cruelled him.
He had a strong junior career, being regarded as a
skilful player who read the
game well. After an injury
riddled 2011 with the
Roosters, and then aged
23, Pfeiffer decided a second club was the best option.
He was recruited to the Redlegs
from the famous VFA/VFL club,
the
Port
Melbourne
“Boroughs”.He played 23 games
in 2011, and was a key performer
during the 2012 Final's series,
which culminated in the Redlegs
first Premiership since 1997.
At that point he had played
35 games over five seasons at Prospect. Pfeiffer's
debut with North Adelaide
was back in 2008.His best
season of League football
in the SANFL was in 2009,
when he was still a teenager and played 11 senior
matches.
He is finding consistency
and form with the Panthers
this year, having played
seven successive League
games from Round 2.
Peter Argent
Mat Suckling (Norwood)
Suckling debuted for Norwood in
Round 1 of the 2011 season,
against the Port Adelaide Magpies. Surprisingly left out of the
initial SANFL State Squad at the
start of this season.
His string of outstanding performances for a month from mid April,
where he was best on ground
three times, and second best on
the other occasion, forced the
selector's hand and he made his
way into the State Squad.

But rather than simply taking a
“tunnel vision” view of this
”return bout” between two of the
competition heavyweights, it is
far more pertinent to look at the
important peripheral aspects
which will ensure this contest
rates as one of the season classics – for all the right reasons!
Each side’s defence will be
tested to the nth degree and this
is where the match may well be
won or lost, with both capable of
rebounding from the back half
with resounding success.
The Bloods are starting to get a
more settled line up in that regard, with the likes of Joel Tippett, Brad Mangan and Adam
Hartlett starting to find form both
individually and as a collective
unit, while they have ample support from Scott Bricknell, Taite
Silverlock and co.
At the other end, Redleg's …….
skipper, Kieran McGuiness, is
the undisputed general of his
back six and along with Alex
Georgiou sets the standard by
which all follow – a standard
which may be just too high again
for the Bloods.
The other factor will be that of
fitness - and with the above
mentioned two day start on recovery for such an important
match, I can see the ‘Legs having too much run in theirs come
the closing 15 minutes.
Norwood by 9 points
The ‘Legs have notched up solid
victories either side of their
Round 8 bye, and are the beneficiaries of an additional two day
break over their rival going into
this pivotal encounter which
could see them at the top of the
ladder should they procure the
points.

Phil Herden
Given the fallout from their ANZAC Day encounter, plus the
small matter that the winner
should be League leader come
Saturday night, makes this
game one to watch.
Norwood did what they had to
do last Friday night in the wet
against Sturt, shutting down the
game.
I am still not sure exactly how
West lost to the Roosters on
Sunday, but ill discipline at key
late moments did not help.
The Bloods have the depth and
talent to take it right up to the
Premiers, but I am not yet sure
they have the belief. Last week
would not have helped.

The much anticipated re-match
of the fiery ANZAC day clash is
here, and it promises to be a
real beauty.
The home team come into the
game off the back of a troubling
loss to North Adelaide, while the
Redlegs have won their last two
matches on either side of a bye.
Norwood have had the wood
over Westies in recent encounters winning the last three contests between the two clubs, including the ANZAC day match.
You get the feeling though that
West are getting closer to toppling the reigning Premiers.

In what is being billed as the
‘Rumble in the Tunnel - Round
2’, this stand-alone Saturday
clash between the current top
two sides will certainly be ‘Match
of the Round’.
The Bloods will be a tad frustrated with letting the win slip
against North last weekend,
while the Redlegs took care of
the Double Blues quite comfortably.
It is going to be interesting to
see what tactics the two sides
employ on the day, in what
should be great conditions for
attacking football.
This one is a real toss of the
coin but something has me leaning toward the home side, just.

They still need to get some fluency and cohesion in attack.
West Adelaide blew a big 27

Both sides come into this Sunday afternoon game at Maughan
Thiem Hyundai Oval, Woodville,
coming off losses. The Eagles
were humbled by a more determined Doggies outfit at Elizabeth last Saturday afternoon,
while the Double Blues suffered
a comprehensive loss at the
hands of the Redlegs on Friday
night. This leaves both sides
desperate for victory and a
chance to return to the winner's
list.
On paper the Eagles are a far
better looking outfit. Their midfield boasts players the calibre
of Luke Powell, Luke Jarrad,
Scott Lewis, Matt Goldsworthy
and Angus Rowntree. While
down back they have the cool
heads and rebound skills of
Aaron Day, Phil Raymond and

raided. That being said, they do
have a number of fine footballers that aren't aligned to AFL
clubs.
These players will need to lead
the charge on Sunday. Ben
Kane in the midfield is one of the
most underrated players in the
League and will be pivotal to
Sturt's chances for a win. As
will the likes of Levi Krause,
Luke Crane, Michael Coad in
defence and big Matt Duldig up
forward.
One of the big contests in the
game will be the ruck battle between the Eagle's Craig Parry,
and Sturt duo Angus Kurtze and
AFL listed Angus Graham. Provided Graham is not called up
for Crows duties the Angus's should give big Parry a ….
real test in the ruck battles
throughout the day.
While
Parry is certainly up to the task
of doing the bulk of the ruck
work, he will look for support
around the ground from youngster Sam Heinjus and defender
Aaron Day.
The Eagles will enter the contest
a strong favourite, but should
not underestimate the Double
Blues who pushed top five
sides, Central and West, all the
way recently. Both sides do
have some injury concerns and
it will be interesting to see just
exactly what the final line ups
will be. I still feel though that the

Eagles by 35 points.
While up forward they have the
dangerous duo of Andrew
Ainger and Nick Salter, providing the latter doesn't get called
up for Power duties. These two
can both be relied upon to put
the score on the board for the
home team. It is hard to see this
Eagle's outfit dropping two in a
row.
The Double Blues themselves
have some talented players, unfortunately for Sturt they are
all too often reliant on their AFL
listed players, and with both the
Crows and the Power coming off
losses expect those stocks to be

Their Round One, Easter Saturday
clash seems so long ago. On that
occasion at Unley, the Double
Blues dominated to hold a 32 point
half time lead before the Eagles ran
them down.
The gap between the Eagle's best
and worst is the biggest I have
seen in some time, whilst Sturt is
still showing fight despite being on
a six game losing streak and entrenched at the bottom of the ladder. If their form lines hold Sturt
will be competitive, but the Eagles
will win.

The Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday will see the Tigers host a
Rooster's outfit coming off a most
remarkable come-from-behind victory over the Bloods, last weekend.
Glenelg will be looking to bounce
back after their disappointing loss
at home to the Panthers, in very
wintry conditions, and to get some
confidence back in the club after a
current losing streak of three
games.
There is a fair bit of pressure
mounting on the Tigers at the moment, and the best way to limit this
is to register a win on the board. It
is going to be a tough ask for the
home side however, as Josh Francou’s Roosters outfit will be cock-ahoop and crowing after their memorable win last week. Although they
had an off day a fortnight ago
against Port, they’re still a very
hard side to beat.
Kris Massie is working with a pretty
young team and has probably felt
the effects of not having a few of
his AFL listed players, who were
strong performers earlier in the
year, in the side over the last few
weeks. The likes of Jarryd Lyons,
Tom Lynch, Tom Logan and Cam
Hitchcock would have all been
handy additions in the black and
gold over the last few weeks.
from injury. 'Dogs recruit, James
Lawton, also needs to stand up in
attack.
For the visitors, they will be hoping
that in-form midfielder and small
forward, Leigh Ryswyk, will overcome a hamstring injury and return
to the line-up. Out of form Power
listed ruckman and forward, Daniel
Stewart, will likely have Tiger's defender, Shaun Tapp, who is in a
pretty good patch of form, line up
on him. While running defender,
Kriston Thompson, also needs to
find some form.
We will see some great match ups
in this clash, which may have a
large bearing on the result of the
match. Todd Miles will probably
get the big job on Ruory Kirkby,
while future leader, Andrew Bradley, may be given the run-with role
on dangerous North player, Nathan
Gordon. The two Tom’s, Clurey for
Glenelg and Langford for North, will
be an intriguing battle also.
Former Magpie's recruit, Ryan
McInerney, has been in great touch
for the Bays and will need to continue his good form, while small
forward, Andrew Hooper, will again
need to contribute on the scoreboard if the Bays are to kick a winning score. The Thring brothers,
Max and George, have been in
great touch of late for North, and
will need to be closely monitored by
the Tigers.
The red and whites look to have
the more settled line-up on paper,
but the Bays will start to realise
their season will slip away pretty
quickly if they don’t start to turn
things around. Coach Massie will
want a more competitive performance than shown in the last few
weeks, but if the result is in the
same vein as the Eagle's loss, the
heat may start to increase in the
coaches' box.
Even if they are not fully switched
on, the Roosters should still have
too much class in this one.
North by 43 points
The home side is also feeling the
loss of young star Lewis Hender,
sidelined for the rest of the year
after a knee reconstruction, and is
really having their depth tested.
They will need a lift from the likes of
Lachlan Button, Craig Pitt and Jason Davenport, while they will hope
to get the skipper, Ty Allen, back

It's a special day for the Tigers
coming off their Hall of Fame function, and celebrating the 40th anniversary of their 1973 premiership
side.
This is a critical game for the future
of the Glenelg Football Club. They
must show some ticker.
The Tigers could not meet the
barnstorming Roosters at a worse
time.
And it's something special that will
be required for Glenelg to cause a
major upset on Monday. They just
don't have the cattle on the park at
the moment.
North's stirring win may hide some
inefficiencies shown against the
Bloods, but self confidence will not
be an issue.
North by 34 points
Don Cooper
Finally…….I can tip the Roosters!!
And how could you not after they
extricated themselves from the
jaws of defeat against the Bloods,
to record what coach Josh Francou
has described as one of the greatest wins by the side in his time at
the helm.
They were modest in the Friday
night contest against South Adelaide and have a number of long
term injury concerns. Also a number of the personnel don’t look to
be fit enough for SANFL League
football.
North, even with their medical room
concerns, are flying at the minute.
Through the middle of the ground,
players like George Thring, Chad
O’Sullivan and Cohen Thiele are in
solid form.
But the strength of the Roosters is
its defence. Will Dalwood, Luke
Ivens, Michael Clinch, Kriston
Thompson, Todd Miles and Joe
Anderson make a powerful unit.

: Glenelg and North played in the first game at Glenelg Oval, (Rd 3 May

last Grand Final at Adelaide Oval (Sept 29 1973).
: Tiger’s last two premierships were won against North (1985 & 1986 Grand Final).
: Glenelg is aiming for its 100th win all time against the Roosters (Currently won 99, North won 121, 2 draws)
After a promising start to the season Glenelg are now really struggling for form and appear to be
headed down the ladder.

And the scary thing for Glenelg
supporters is the fact there is still a
lot of improvement in North Adelaide - and should they manage to
make the necessary tweaks to their
kicking efficiency, particularly in
front of goal, this could be one of
the blow outs of the year.
They have far too much depth compared to the shallow waters of the
Bay and with a full quarter effort will
have a percentage booster here!

NATHAN’S BIGGER FAN
Not being afraid to show his admiration for
North’s gun recruit, Nathan Gordon, FOOT-e
TIMES SA contributor Phil Aspinall has found out
there is someone who dotes on the former Sydney Swan more than himself, both online and on
the airwaves. After seeing Gordon perform in just
one trial game, Phil had no problems in publically
airing him a Magarey Medal chance.
West
From the weekend:
Matthew Rankine- Concussion, review
Ongoing:
Shannon Green- Abductor, test
Drew Gallard – Ankle, 3 weeks
So, after witnessing another magnificent performance from the classy on-baller, kicking 5 goals
last week, Phil was lucky enough to meet Ian
Gordon, the father of Nathan. Upon realising that
he was speaking to the media identity that has
big wraps on his son, Ian ended up apologising to
Phil, advising him that of course no-one can ‘love’
Nathan as much as his own Father does.

BATTERED BOYD BACKS DOC
Information provided by the SANFL and their clubs
After revealing he actually played out the 2010
League Grand Final with a small fracture in one
of his legs, Bulldogs midfielder James Boyd highlighted that he not only has a pretty strong pain
threshold but a loyal trust in the club doctor. Both
of these elements were again tested in the game
last weekend against the Eagles. The former
Panther was in the wars from the get-go.
After copping a very heavy knock behind the ear
Page 60
in the opening term, the slightly groggy Boyd was
able to shake it off and return to action, only to
cop yet another heavy hit, this time to the shoulder, within 5 minutes of returning. Despite question marks on whether or not the Central medicos
were doing the right thing, Boyd again showed
faith in them, finishing out the game.
PHIL’S PASSIONATE PLEA
Already known as a very passionate local footy
fan, FOOT-e TIMES SA Editor and SANFL caller
Phil Herden took that passion to another level after commentating the North v West game on Sunday of last week. Witnessing first-hand the phenomenal atmosphere that the Prospect fans had
provided, on the back of the magnificent comeback, his on-air editorial was emotion-filled.
After emphasising the importance of not losing
that uniqueness local fans bring to the SANFL,
Phil also summed up the moment perfectly, stating the “roof was coming off this grandstand” from
the noise made by all the North fans, and that "If
you ever want to see the passion that is in the
SANFL, then Prospect Oval is the place to be. "
How right you are Mr Herden, well said.
THE MIGHTY ARE FALLING
One the weekend both Glenelg and Prospect
Ovals took on a different look as recent weather
conditions has resulted in some urgent reconstruction works.
At the Bay, trees and high advertising signage on
the outer wing have been removed as the retaining wall between the oval and tennis club needs
some rework. Thankfully with only 1,555 in attendance no one was on the outer side anyway.
Meanwhile at Prospect a massive tree that was in
a house to the south of the oval has keeled over
smashing the fence blocking the road around the
back of the oval. Its going to be a fair job removing and a lot of firewood for sale.
AND FINALLY
Well done to Glenelg on Friday Night in offering
post match a FREE BEER to patrons who weathered the wet to turn up. Hopefully the kids got a
drink as well.
