BLUES BROTHERS TUNED UP FOR REVIVAL
In many ways, it could be
said that solidarity is the byproduct of adversity, so after successive years in the
League competition’s cellar
- and enduring a current
battle of the balance sheet the Sturt Football Club is
set to take an extremely
committed and united front
into season 2013 in a bid to
honour its proud history and
revive an esteemed standing within the SANFL.
Foot-e Times: “Seamus,
looking back, 2012 certainly
provided a number of challenges for you in your first
year as senior coach of the
Double Blues. So, from
your perspective, what
were the toughest of those
and what have you taken
from facing them into
2013?”
Seamus Maloney: “Look, I
think one of the toughest
things in coaching is getting
your side playing consistently good footy, but certainly dealing with a list
made up of experienced
and younger players as well
as those in the AFL system
(and) working out ways to
bring that group together ...
Make no mistake, the Double Blues were not that far
off the mark in 2012 and
while there can be no
doubting they possess the
courage, character and
commitment to take the
next step in 2013, do they
have the vital ingredient of
consistency to complete the
recipe for success?
Well, to get a greater insight
as to exactly how the Blues
will answer that question –
and their critics - we sought
out the thoughts of League
coach Seamus Maloney on
the eve of season 2013.

FROM THE COACH
was definitely the biggest
challenge in my first year as
a SANFL senior coach.
So, out of that, we’ve spent
a lot more time this preseason working on more
game-like drills than we
have previously, which is
certainly helping the
younger players coming
into the squad and as well
as that, it’s promoting more
ownership of what we need
on the ground.
Once again, we’ll be affected by the ten guys who
are AFL listed, mainly with
the Crows, but with a bigger
focus on match day simulations in our pre-season, we
can ensure those guys
have a real understanding
of our game plan as well as
plenty of on-ground support
when they do come into the
side.”
SM: “Our defensive side of
the game really needs to
improve for us to become a
consistently better side.
Last season some slack defence cost us in games
which we were right in the
thick of, however, it’s not
just in the backlines, but defending all over the ground
which is vital to our success. We are always going
to play attacking footy,
move the ball fast and look
to kick goals, so ensuring
we work hard on earning
the ball from our opponents
and improving our transition
play will be a focus.”
FeT: “On that note, the offseason invariably brings a
number of changes to a
club’s playing list, so how
have the arrivals and departures impacted your lineup and structures for the
season ahead?”
SM: “We’ve undoubtedly
lost a lot of experience in
regards to games of
League
footy
and
‘Sheeds’ (former captain
and 2002 Magarey Medallist) is probably the most
notable, but even the likes
of Craig Evans, Josh
Cubillo and Tristan Gum do
leave some big gaps.
FeT: “Now that you’ve had
a chance to reflect on the
mixed fortunes of last season, what areas do you feel
the team needs to improve
in to become a consistent
performer – and potential
finals force – in 2013?”

But saying that, we’ve got a
talented young group of
players coming through the
ranks and the inclusion of
Michael Coad (returning
from the Gold Coast Suns)
and Alexander Stopp
(Norwood) will really stiffen
up the defensive unit.
(In addition to that pair) Tom
Johnson
(Langhorne
Creek) will slot in nicely
around half-forward, Nick
Pearce is a good, aggressive ruckman, Anthony Carlile (brother of Alipate) has
made a return from football’s wilderness and will
add to our forward line,
while Simon Potts is a real
rangy wingman/ half-back
type.
SM: “Just their willingness
to embrace a lot more competitive training which in
turn has created a greater
work ethic. We’ve had a
real emphasis on building
strength and power in the
gym, which has resulted in
good strong bodies which
are getting fitter and
stronger with the increased
amount of game day simulation work.”
FeT: “In many respects, a
League team is only ever
going to be as good as its
depth allows, so how do
you feel the Double Blues
are positioned in other
grades to create a successful, sustainable and stable
outfit in 2013?”

younger guys and now the
battle is to get the group up
and going as soon as possible.
We had some great results
with our Reserves and Under 18 sides last year and
there are six or so from the
latter outfit who are doing
everything right on the
training track at the moment
for us.
So in that respect - and
given their overall attitude –
I really feel we have a very
sustainable future ahead,
it’s just a matter of how
quickly we can get them up
to speed.”
SM: “Having chiselled away
at the playing group, I believe we are really well positioned for the next 3-4 ...
So we’ve recruited far and
wide in the off-season and
while the players who have
joined us may not be ‘big
names’ they certainly add
some size to the group and
fit the requirements we
identified.”
FeT: “In regards to preparations for this season, what
have been the areas in
which the group has really
impressed you?”

FeT: “Obviously your support-staff play a vital role in
the team’s success on the
field, so what do you look
for from your coaching colleagues during the week
and on match day?”

2012 IN REVIEW
Did You Know?
Did Sturt improve last year ?
Sturt’s 1976 premiership was played in front of
the biggest crowd in SA Football History as
66,897 crammed into AAMI Stadium for the
Grand Final against Port.
Whilst Sturt did collect consecutive Wooden
Spoons the general consensus was that they did
improve in 2012. Here are some stats to help
you make up your own mind.
Ironically they virtually had no spectators when
they won the 1915 flag against North as Adelaide Oval was being used as a camping ground
for soldiers about to go overseas in World War I.

MEDIA PERSONALITY
The winners of the inaugural FOOT-e TIMES SA
MEDIA POLL have now been announced with one of
local media’s most diverse analysts, Chris Kendall,
claiming the major award of FANS FAVOURITE
SANFL MEDIA PERSONALITY.
Chris covered the SANFL media spectrum this season as a boundary rider and occasional commentator
on ABC1’s weekly telecast plus regular radio commentator on RPH Adelaide and SANFL writer for
Sportsbeat.
Thursday evening, collected almost 45% of the votes
whilst FIVEaa’s SANFL Show on Sunday evenings finished 2nd with almost 30%. The RPH show is hosted
by Phil Aspinall, Grant Coffee & John Nankivell.
FAVOURITE PLAY BY PLAY COMMENTATOR
: MICHAEL MANEY (ABC1 / RPH Adelaide)
Michael Maney, well known for his Friday Night broadcasts on RPH Adelaide and Saturday commentary on
ABC1 was a clear winner with 14% of the total votes.
The remaining finallists Dennis Browne, Neil Cross,
Chris Kendall & John Nankivell were bunched together
on about 9% each. Michael has now moved back to his
home state of Tasmania to take up a role as sports
newsreader for Southern Cross Television.
His SANFL Media Career began in 2004 when he
hosted a weekly SANFL Segment on Community TV
station C31. He went on to host a one hour TV program “Total SANFL” before joining the ABC’s SANFL
TV team in a part time statisticians role in 2006. He
is now in his 7th season writing weekly Sportsbeat
articles which are a mixture of both a preview of all
SANFL games and a feature piece on a local football
issue. He is also heard on RPH Adelaide during their
Friday Night and Sunday broadcasts.

the votes, with the leagues other weekly broadcaster
107.9 Life FM coming in second with 24%. RPH Adelaide used a large broadcast team in 2012 which included Darryl Smith, Dennis Browne, Kym Morgan,
Grant Coffee, Neil Cross, Michael Maney, Chris
Kendall, John Nankivell, Phil Herden & Phil Aspinall.

Now in its 22rd season, the RPH SANFL League
Teams Show, which airs from 8pm to 9pm on a
Grant Coffee a regular special comments expert on
RPH Adelaide during their Friday Night and Sunday
radio broadcasts collected 13% of the vote, followed by
Phil Aspinall on 12% and Brenton Phillips on 11%.
Grant was also part of the RPH SANFL Leagues Show
team that won the award for favourite SANFL Radio
Show.
In 2012 Phil Aspinall performed a wide range of radio
roles for both Life FM & RPH Adelaide from calling, to
special comments, boundary riding, around the
grounds and stats. He was rewarded for his versatility
by receiving 27% of votes ahead of ABC 1 boundary
rider Chris Kendall with 24%. Ben Knights and Don
Cooper finished almost tied for 3rd with 13%. Phil was
also part of the RPH SANFL Leagues Show team that
won the award for favourite SANFL Radio Show
FAVOURITE SANFL WRITER
: JAI BEDNALL (Local Footy SA)
Jai’s “Monday Morning Centreman” column in Local
Footy SA proved a runaway favourite with voters in the
most one sided result of the survey. He finished with
19% of the votes almost double his nearest rivals. The
remaining four finallists Chris Kendall, Warren Partland, Zac Milbank & Reece Homfray finished in a distant pack with around 10% each.

Rookie Drafted to Richmond in 2006 before being
elevated in 2007, Graham found his ruck spot taken
by Ivan Maric last year and was traded to the Crows
for Pick 42 in the 2012 National Draft (Richmond
took WWT Eagles Matthew McDonough). He played
48 AFL games for Richmond and is originally from
Currie in Tasmania.
2ND—SOUTH : Kyle Hartigan (Crows)
Selected in the 2013 Rookie Draft by the Crows at
Pick #14, 21yo Hartigan has senior state league experience at the Werribee Tigers in the VFL.
Orginally a junior from Keilor and the Western Jets
TAC Cup side, this 194cm tall defender was overlooked when 17 but has now broken into AFL ranks.
3RD—PORT : Ollie Wines (Power)
Wines was the Power’s First Round (#7) Pick in the
2012 National Draft. He is labelled as a strong bodied inside midfielder who hails from Echuca in Northern Victoria and the Bendigo Diggers TAC Cup side.
4TH—GLENELG : Tom Clurey (Power)
Port’s second pick (#29) in the 2012 National Draft
is a 193cm defender who can run all day, setting a
combine best beep test score of 15.1. From Katamatitie he played Under 18’s for the Murray Bushrangers.
5TH—EAGLES : Kane Mitchell (Power)
The Eagles have never had a Magarey Medallist but
they do have a 23yo player who has won the WAFL’s
equivalent, the Sandover Medal, as part of Claremont’s premiership team last year. Known for his
speed having run a 2.86, 20m sprint at a state combine, he was Rookie listed by the Power at pick #5.
6TH—CENTRAL : Jack Osborn (Crows)
Another Claremont WAFL Premiership Player recruited
by the Power, Lewis played 10 games for the West
Coast Eagles in 2010 but could not sustain his position
in defence. Was traded to Port for Pick #87 in the National Draft.
9TH—STURT : Rory Atkins (Crows)
Crows 2nd Pick in the 2012 National Draft (#81). Originally from Maribryong Park and the Calder Cannons
TAC Cup side as a left footed midfielder with speed.
10TH—SOUTH : Mason Shaw (Power)
An accurate forward who kicked 10.4 at the Under 18
Nationals for WA, Mason hails from Winnacott in WA,
developed at South Fremantle. At 197cm he is a back
up ruck option once he bulks up to AFL level and was
Pick #30 in the 2012 National Draft.
11TH—PORT : Jack Nead (Power)
Already a likely cult favourite after his Power NAB Cup
debut, Nead hails from Elliott and East Point in the NT
playing Under 18’s for North Ballarat. An All Australian
selection after a outstanding carnival for the Northern
Territory, he was traded by the GWS Giants for Pick
#28 in the 2012 National Draft.
12TH—GLENELG : Tim Klaosen (Crows)
The second of two basketballers the Crows are hoping
to develop into a tall defender or ruckman. At 197cm
Klaosen did play some junior football for the Goodwood Saints. Was selected in the Rookie Draft at Pick
#42.
13TH—EAGLES : Campbell Heath (Power)
A key member of the Swans NEAFL side, who made it
to the conference final, Heath has been the victim of 2
knee reconstructions which saw him unable to build on
his two AFL games for Sydney. Originally from Maffra
and the Gipsland Under 18 TAC Cup squad, he was
traded to the Power for Pick #70 in the National Draft.
The 22 yo Demon from North Hobart is another tall
(205cm) mature aged Rookie Listed recruit with a
basketball background having played college ball
with Adams State University in the US for 4 years.

This year the trial game fixture has contracted to 11
games over just a 3 week period with a majority of clubs
(5) playing just 2 pre-season matches.
Last year 13 games were scheduled over a 4 week period, every club except South playing 3 games.
Norwood, Central, South & Sturt will play all 3 weekends
with 6 of the confirmed 10 games being played under
lights. A venue and time for the Port v Glenelg match on
March 23rd is still to be confirmed.
If that game is played on March 23rd the Magpies will
have just a 5 day break before their Round One season
opener against Norwood at Coopers Stadium on Thursday March 29th.
