T
he football equivalent of the old
adage about the inevitability
of death and taxes is that every player
will one day become an ex-player.
Irrespective of how long or
successful an individual’s career may
have been, all spend longer retired
than they did playing.
Some former League footballers are
recognised as iconic champions of
the sport and become household
names. Others move into the media,
some have developed into wellknown businessmen and others
delve into coaching or administrative
roles.
Additionally, there are thousands
who simply drift out of the public eye.
Genuine superstar or modest
journeyman, all have made their
contribution to the SANFL’s rich
history and all have a story to tell.
CHRIS KLUZEK – EAGLES
An arthritic, cartilage-bereft right
knee not only forced talented
Woodville-West Torrens full-forward
Chris Kluzek’s shock SANFL
retirement, shortly after his 23rd
birthday, it also prevented him from
entering the police force and fulfilling
his ambition of becoming a forensic
scientist.
“I’ve had six cleanouts on the knee
ever since I ripped the whole
cartilage off the bone when I was 15,”
said Kluzek, who played 70 League
games for the Eagles from 1997 to
2001.
“I’d always planned to be a police
officer and applied after I finished
playing, but because of my knee I
couldn’t get in and the same
happened when I applied in 2008.”
Instead, Kluzek has travelled
extensively, predominantly
backpacking. He has visited more
than 30 countries and now works as
a travel agent for Escape Travel in
Glenelg.
Between overseas journeys, Kluzek
stood at full-forward briefly for
Scotch O.C. in 2005 before later
becoming player-coach for SMOSH
West Lakes in the SAAFL.
Unable to do much running these
days, he has maintained his fitness
by rowing surfboats competitively
for Grange Surf Club - until a nasty
road cycling accident saw him
break his collar bone earlier this
year, putting him on the outer for the
time being.
Kluzek still attends Eagles games,
with brother Matt (a former SANFL
Eagle and AFL Crow), his fiancée’s
father (ex-Woodville big man John
Coudraye) and his cousin Grant
Reubenicht (1997 Glenelg Club
Champion).
“We go to watch; usually have a
beer on the hill and attend some of
the past players’ shows,” Kluzek said.
The 32-year-old, who played in
two losing SANFL Grand Finals,
came within a whisker of claiming
the 2000 Ken Farmer Medal, which
went to West Adelaide spearhead
Adam Richardson.
“We were playing North, who were
the bottom side, compared to West
playing (reigning premier) Port
Adelaide, who had the State fullback (Corey Ah Chee).
“We were both on 60 (goals) at the
start of that round, so it came down
to whoever kicked the most that day.
“I had only one (goal) at half-time
and when we came back out in the
second half, one of the umps told
me Richo had eight in the first half
(Richardson booted 12 of the
Bloods’ 17 goals that day).
“I’d heard the Westies boys looked
after him and were feeding him all
day, but we were focused more
towards the Finals.”
BARRY HEARL – NORTH
Barry Hearl led North Adelaide’s
goal-kicking in 1969 and ’74. But on
one forgettable afternoon at
Woodville in 1972, his kicking boot
was uncharacteristically astray, a
fact of which he was cheekily
reminded of when interviewed by
Roosters legend and long-time
teammate, Barrie Robran, during a
club luncheon.
“Barrie mentioned that game at
Woodville and asked me what
(score) I kicked,” Hearl said.
“I said ‘Barrie, you shouldn’t be
interviewing me, I should be
interviewing you’, but he never
wanted to talk about himself.
“I sprayed them a bit and kicked
1.9, so I said I kicked 2.3 - that’s still
15 points. Barrie said ‘no you didn’t’
... he eventually got it out of me.
“I thought I’d be playing on my
normal half-forward flank but our
regular full-forward Dennis Sachse
was dropped to the Bs - where he
kicked 10.1 - and our trainer told
me to pull my finger out as I’d be
playing full-forward.
“It was just one of those days ... I
ended up getting moved and stood
Malcolm Blight (who won the
Magarey Medal that year) in the
second half.”
Thankfully, such afternoons were
few and far between for Hearl, who
was more renowned for the goals he
did kick, having averaged around
two majors per game throughout his
seven-year, 101-match career.
The enigmatic goalsneak also won
two premierships with North (197172) and played in the famous 1972
Champions of Australia win over
Carlton before retiring in 1974, aged
just 26.
“After playing mainly in good sides,
we had a bad year in ‘74 as a lot of
5
Chris Kluzek.
our good players left,” said Hearl,
who in his day was elusively quick,
could take a high mark and, by his
own admission, was “built like a
crowbar”, at 6-1 and 11.5 stone
(73kg).
“They asked me to stay but I
wasn’t interested in getting games
up in losing sides.
“I was a bit casual, a bit of a rebel
... Patto (coach Mike Patterson) used
to just shake his head at me.”
So Hearl left to play for Kybybolite
in the KNTFL in the south-east,
where he claimed two Mail Medals,
before spending time playing and
coaching at Elizabeth, Brahma
Lodge and Campbelltown-Magill.
These days Hearl, 63, works in
roofing maintenance for building
company Metal-Link, attends most
of North’s home games, often with
Jan Lindner, the widow of Hearl’s
good friend, Roosters legend Don
Lindner, and enjoys “a few red
wines” at
club functions.
Hearl famously kicked the historic
first-ever League goal at AAMI
Stadium in the first match played at
the ground in May 1974.
“We’ve re-enacted it a couple of
times and I’ve spoken about it at a
few luncheons,” he said.
Barry Hearl.
“During one re-enactment I was on
the ground with Tony Casserly
(Central’s captain-coach in 1974,
who was credited with the first hitout) and we hadn’t really met before.
“They gave me this flat footy to
kick a goal. I was on the 50m line
and being 30 years older, with the
fat guts now, I thought ... let’s bring it
in to 10 yards out instead!”
GENE CHIRON – BULLDOGS
Gene Chiron played in that
landmark 1974 game for the
Bulldogs and could easily have
been the man participating in such
re-enactments... except his first shot
at the new stadium went through for
a behind, allowing Hearl to create
history shortly after.
“Even if I’d kicked it, I would have
given it to Rick Vidovich who kicked
the first goal in the Reserves,” said
Chiron, now 61.
Hard and uncompromising, 179cm
Chiron was recruited from
Hawthorn and used by Central in a
variety of positions, including as an
undersized centre half-forward.
Courageous Chiron’s footy
philosophy was simple.
“Run in and get the damn thing that’s the only way I knew,” he said.
“I wasn’t that tall but I was pretty fit
and could run all day.
“Even at Hawthorn during our
‘Kennedy’s Commandos’, I would
often get the pre-season awards for
being the best trainer.”
Feeling discontented after yo-yoing
in and out of the Hawks’ senior side
(he played 37 VFL games from
1969-73), Chiron joined the Dogs in
1974 after he’d impressed Casserly
and Lyndon “Beefy” Andrews during
a televised carnival in Western
Australia.
“I remember the first pre-season
training session with Central, we’d
stop to sit in the shade under a tree
for a rest,” said Chiron, who has
worked as a civil engineer for Knox
City Council in Melbourne’s east for
the past 30 years.
“We would never have done that at
Hawthorn under John Kennedy, but
he was way ahead of his time.”
Chiron played 31 games for the
Dogs inside two seasons, before his
career ended tragically when he
collided with West Adelaide
enforcer Ray Hayes in the first
quarter of a heated clash at
Elizabeth.
“Ray Hayes kneed me in the
stomach and put me in hospital split my liver,” Chiron said.
“I was knocked heavily the week
before - rabbit-chopped in the back
and kidney against North while
breaking away from a pack and my
liver was actually severed then, but
the Ray Hayes one was more
dramatic and put me in hospital ... I
could have been in real strife.”
Chiron collapsed and was carried
from the ground on a stretcher
before being taken to Lyell McEwin
Hospital and later transferred to
Royal Adelaide, where he
underwent surgery for a lacerated
liver and had a kidney removed.
“It was unfortunate … but sh*t
happens,” Chiron said. “It just means
I’ve got one good kidney now and I
get to drink a bit more.”
Forced into retirement, Chiron
6
stayed at the club as Gary Window’s
assistant and then fitness coach for
a couple of years before moving to
back to Melbourne where “itchy
feet” and a call from former
teammate, Hawks defender Ian
Bremner, saw him play a few years
for Mulgrave in the Eastern Districts
Football League.
Chiron was fitted with a protective
girdle to safeguard his internal
organs.
In 2009 he was invited by Central
to toss the coin before the start of a
game and is well aware of the
Bulldogs’ recent premiership
exploits.
Chiron is a member of Hawthorn’s
Past Players and Officials committee,
having played alongside some
famous names at Glenferrie Oval,
including David Parkin, Peter
Hudson, Don Scott and Leigh
Matthews, who Chiron rates “the
best footballer I’ve ever seen”.
IVAN ECKERMANN – PORT
Rugged Port Adelaide defender
Ivan Eckermann has the unique
distinction of being the only player
to have knocked the great Matthews
unconscious during the Hawthorn
legend’s long, decorated career, a
fact acknowledged by Matthews
himself in his biography.
“We both went for the footy, he
slipped over and my knee collected
him in the head,” Eckermann
recalled of the second quarter
incident during the South Australia
versus Victoria State of Origin clash
of 1982.
“It was just one of those accidental
things.”
By his own admission, Eckermann
was “pretty lucky to be in the right
place at the right time” when he
reflects on his 150-game career
(1974-83), in which he played in
four Grand Finals (1977, 1979, 1980
and 1981) and won them all (he
missed the unsuccessful 1976
decider).
“1977 was the most memorable as
we hadn’t won (a premiership) for
12 years, so it ended a fair drought,”
Eckermann said.
“I was playing at half-back in that
Grand Final and went off early with
a corked thigh.
“Darrell Cahill was off with a
hamstring and when Kym Kinnear
was knocked out, we were down to
17 fit men.
“(Ashley) McKay (runner) came
running into the dressing room and
screamed at me to get back out
there... I was the least injured of the
three, so I had no choice.”
Sitting in the rooms with an ice
pack on his thigh, his boots off and
his jacket undone, Eckermann was
quickly patched up, had some
heavy bandaging applied to his
badly bruised thigh and sent to a
forward pocket.
Virtually on one leg, Eckermann
soldiered through the pain barrier
to memorably boot three goals and
help steer the Magpies to an epic
eight-point victory over Glenelg.
“It was great to be part of a very
successful era,” he said. “We were
taught the Port way which was to be
hard and tough at the footy and if
an opponent was between you and
the footy, you’d take out a body.”
Eckermann was one of those guys
who improved as his career wore
on, playing just 24 matches over his
first five years, before adding a
further 126 across the next five.
He mentored the likes of Gavin
Wanganeen, Simon Tregenza and
Darren Mead as Port’s U17s coach
from 1988-90, is a life member of
both the Power and the Magpies,
and lives over the back fence from
long-time teammate Greg Phillips in
West Lakes.
The 56-year-old accrues “a lot of
frequent flyer points” travelling
around Australia in his role as Sales
Director for National Foods,
meaning “I can’t get to as many
games as I’d like”.
Although he never won a best and
fairest, or got within a country mile
of claiming a Magarey Medal,
Eckermann is still held in a high
esteem at Alberton.

SUPPORTER STORIES
O
ver the past two weeks we
ran an intriguing piece
about some of the SANFL’s most
dedicated supporters. We
received a number of emails
about some other loyal
supporters.
We have chosen to give The
Phantom the week off to collect
his thoughts and run one of
these stories and also an update
to South supporter, Maxine
McPherson’s story.
If you have your own stories or
have a follow up email to the
blast from the past story in this
week’s issue drop us a line – we
would love to hear from you.
Stuart Shaw
ifty-nine-year-old Stuart Shaw has
been a Sturt supporter all his life
and this is his story:
“My love of the Sturt Football Club
began as a 10 year old when my late
father took me to a game against
West Adelaide in 1962. We got
thrashed by Westies and to complete
the misery I got cleaned up by a mob
of older kids chasing a football when
I ventured on to the ground during
the half time break.
Bruised, bloodied and sobbing, I
moaned to dad, “Why do we have to
follow such a weak team?” He replied,
“Be patient, son, we have Jack Oatey
as coach and should improve.” He
was right on both scores. I had to be
patient, as he didn’t take me to
another game for five years! And, of
course, Jack Oatey became a legend
at the Sturt Football Club.
Back in the late ‘50s, early ‘60s I
was probably the only Sturt
supporter at Forbes Primary School
and constantly wore the taunts from
F
the Port and West supporters who
seemed to be in the majority.
“Sturt, Sturt rub them in the dirt”
was the common phrase from them.
By the time I reached high school at
Marion High, there seemed to be
mainly Sturt, South and Glenelg
supporters present. My four mates
were all Glenelg supporters and I
remember the 1969 Grand Final
where we all camped out in front of
the gates to ensure we would be on
the fence for the game. My mates
were quite shattered when their
beloved Tigers failed, but I was rapt.
We had driven to the game in one
car (not mine) and as I wanted to
watch the blue boys run around with
the cup, my mates left me there. I had
to catch the train home. Dad was
ropeable when I got home (for some
reason he didn’t go to that game), but
all my mates came around the next
day to apologise.
I was lucky living through what was
to become Sturt’s golden era, when
Premierships just seemed part of
everyday life at Unley. I still have
vivid memories of most of the
brilliant players of the Jack Oatey era.
Paul Bagshaw, who surely should
have won at least one Magarey
Medal, Keith Chessell, John Murphy,
Darryl Hicks, Doc Clarkson, Rick
Schoff, Roger Rigney, Michael
Graham, Rick Davies.. I could go on
and on. The 1976 Grand Final win
was probably the best game I ever
saw, the 1978 loss to Norwood the
most disappointing in a year where
we lost only one minor round match
and blew the Grand Final with
terrible goal kicking 14-26 to 16-15 –
nine more scoring shots. I have never
blamed the umpire for that one.
I have been a member since 2000,
and joined the Vice-Presidents this
Stuart Shaw.
season. I really enjoy the
camaraderie that exists between
supporters and the approachability
of the players. Hopefully, the Double
Blues will become a power again,
soon. Local footy, you just can’t
beat it.”
Maxine McPherson
South supporter Maxine
McPherson’s story ran last week and
it has come to our attention a couple
of errors with regards to her history
– please see an email from her below.
“I would like to thank you for
writing about me in last week’s
Budget, which I purchased on the
weekend when we beat Sturt. I
would just like to point out the
mistake in the write up.
You had me as canteen manager for
27 years, I was the Marketing
Manager for 25 years. Then after
retirement became a volunteer and
worked in the Canteen and BBQ, then
this year became the Canteen & BBQ
Manager. Your write ups have been
great and very interesting and I
commend you for your highlighting
some of the great supporters of the
SANFL Football Clubs.”

TIK TOK, MURPHY’S ON TOP
D
on’t be fooled by his age, his lack of experience or
even his questionable taste in music.
22-year-old South Adelaide captain Nick Murphy, the
youngest skipper in Panthers’ history and the youngest
current captain in the SANFL by some margin, is
undaunted by the job at hand.
South coach Ron Fuller, after seeking recommendations
from the playing group and his coaching staff, selected
Murphy to replace the retired Ben Warren as Panthers
captain in March. He is supported by an equally youthful
leadership group comprising vice-captain Brad Crabb,
Andrew Horne, Nick Liddle, Xavier Gotch and Jacob Crate.
“I consider myself a fairly well-respected leader at the
club,” said first-year skipper Murphy.
“I’m comfortable that I’ve got everyone’s support and
there are a lot of natural leaders at the club who I can
gain knowledge and advice from, so in that respect I don’t
find it (captaincy) intimidating.”
And why would he? Combine the fearlessness of
youth with his own impressive leadership résumé,
which includes captaining Strathalbyn to a mini-colts
grand final and a junior-colts premiership, skippering
South’s Under-15s and leading Rostrevor College’s First
XVIII in his final year of high school, and he’s as readymade as they come.
“I wasn’t surprised to get it (captaincy) because I was
aware I was in the running,” Murphy said.
“I have experienced leadership roles in the past and
consider myself a good leader for my age.
“But when it was announced, I was extremely proud and
honoured, and it’s something I hold very close to me.”
Taking charge of an even younger group in his part-time
work supervising kids at Norwood Community Crèche
Centre, Murphy is also into his third year at university,
where he is studying a double degree in education and
human movement at Mawson Lakes with the end goal of
becoming a P.E. teacher.
Noticeably, Murphy’s level of maturity belies his tender
years … well, that is until the conversation turns to his
feelings for US pop singer-songwriter Ke$ha.
“I do have a sneaky like for her … I don’t mind her,”
laughed Murphy, who is rumoured to have bought a
number of Ke$ha DVDs in Bali, while he was over there
with his South teammates during an off-season footy trip.
Nick Murphy.
“I have caught a glimpse of her live … but I’ve only got
one poster of her.”
As enthusiastic as he is about Ke$ha, it doesn’t compare
with Murphy’s passion to improve his own game and
become a long-term, successful leader at Noarlunga.
“I’d like to improve my disposal, get better at hitting
targets and work further at developing my clearance
work as well as continue developing as a leader,” he said.
“I do get vocal on the field and I pride myself on
motivating and trying to bring the team up if they’re
down.
“It’s an exciting time and the future looks bright for the
club, but we need to become consistently successful and
I don’t want to use the fact we’re young as an excuse for
lapses and losing games.
“We are young and we’ve got a lot to learn, but with this
(leadership) group, we are looking to have long-term
success into the future.”

WUNDKE BOOTS A BAG
Star Player Votes – Round 16
S
outh dynamic forward Michael
Wundke kicked eight goals as
he guided his team to a
comfortable 29-point win over Sturt
on the weekend.
Wundke was dominant for the
Panthers, taking 15 marks and
collecting 22 possessions including
16 kicks and six handballs.
The Panthers, who have claimed
the last two wooden spoons, are in
the mix to play Finals football.
The boys from Noarlunga face a
tough test this weekend as they
host Norwood, who are looking to
rebound after its loss to the Eagles.
Wundke’s eight goal haul places
him in the lead for the Ken Farmer
Medal and also earnt him five votes
in the ‘be active’ Star Player and
R.O. Shearman Medal.
Judged by members of the
SANFL’s 200 Club on a 5-4-3-2-1

Adelaide Football Club is this
week’s Powerade Star Search
winner. His solid work rate and
ability to continually force a contest
were the qualities that earned him
the award for the week. The 19
year old, who originates from the
Barmera Monash Football Club, has
had a strong year in the Reserves
this season. In his League debut
against Centrals at Playford Alive
Oval last weekend, his versatility
was his strength as he played a
somewhat unfamiliar role at centre
half forward and finished with
seven kicks, seven handballs, five
marks and one goal.
