SR booklet 2016Revised2 - Norwood Public Schools
Dear Parents,
The Norwood Elementary School Librarians and the Children’s
Librarians from the Morrill Memorial Library have designed this
reading list to keep your child reading throughout the summer. Parents understand how important it is that their children continue to read during the summer but they may have difficulty finding
the right books to inspire their children. This list provides a sample
of popular authors and titles that will keep your child excited about
reading. Your public librarian can help your child locate books that
are at the right reading level and are of interest to your child, so don’t
hesitate to come in and ask for help. The Morrill Memorial Library
is a member of the Minuteman Library Network which is a consortium of 43 libraries. If the Norwood Library doesn’t own a title, we
can order it from another library. The Morrill Memorial library also
offers downloadable materials from the Digital Media Catalog, and
Hoopla.
The reading list is available online at the school library website, as
well as the public library website: www.norwoodlibrary.org

School Reading Requirement:
All students are expected to read at least three (3) books this
summer that they will discuss with their class in September.
Each student is required to read:
· one fiction
· one non-fiction
· one free choice
Students, you are required to hand in your reading list to
your teacher on the first day of school. You will be expected to
share at least one project with your classmates when you
return to school in September. To help you remember what you
have read, plan to complete a project on at least one of your
books. Some suggestions are below.
·
·
·
·
·
·
draw a picture of your favorite character or part in the
story
describe your favorite part or character in the story
create a new ending for the book
write a letter to the main character or author of the book
design a new book cover or bookmark for one of the
books you read
be creative - come up with your own project
It is important that you keep reading and learning throughout
the summer. Pick something that you will enjoy reading and
challenge yourself to read as much as you can. Use this
summer reading list to help you find books that are fun and
interesting to read. Join the Norwood Library Summer Reading
Program to help keep track of all the books you are reading.
_______________________________________________________________
Most of the books on this Summer Reading List are the newest and most highly
rated titles published in 2014. If a title that you would like to read is not available, you can request it through the Minuteman Library Network. Ask a librarian for help or simply go to http://norwoodlibrary.org and use the Minuteman
catalog to put a hold on the book. It will be delivered to the Norwood Public
Library for you!

Reading program and log each book you read,
along with your review (if you choose to write
one), to your Summer Reading website.
Goals of Summer Reading:
It is well documented that students who do not read over
the summer tend to lose academic gains made during the
school year.
Looking for a book in a format other than print? Here are
some popular books available in audio and electronic
formats:
Experts agree that children who read during the summer gain reading
skills, while those who do not often slide backward. According to the
authors of a report from the National Summer Learning Association:
"A conservative estimate of lost instructional time [due to not
reading over the summer] is approximately two months or roughly
22 percent of the school year.... It's common for teachers to spend at
least a month re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the
summer. That month of re-teaching eliminates a month that could have
been spent on teaching new information and skills."

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School
By requiring all students to read this summer, we hope to
· prevent the “summer slide" & loss of academic
readiness for school
· advance literary and academic performance
· encourage family reading experiences
· increase vocabulary, fluency & comprehension
· encourage students and parents to discuss what they
read and their favorite authors or characters
· foster a love of reading

If you haven’t already, be sure to take a look at the
Tumblebooks option on the library website. It has
many great books that you can listen to and follow
along with the book.
