CARMELITES REMEMBER THE MISSION
n honor of Veterans Day,
Carmelite Alumni veterans
from Mt. Carmel High
School and Crespi Carmelite
High School gathered to watch
the Crespi vs. Loyola football
game and to reminisce and re-
commit to The Mission.
In 1934 the Carmelites began their
Los Angeles mission building

The purpose of the Mount Carmel Alumni Foundation is to provide financial assistance to the Carmelite Community
and to the Catholic elementary schools in South-Central Los Angeles that have provided our alumni with an excellent
education. MCAF publishes the Crusader newsletter and assists in regular event planning for the information and

Mt. Carmel had to close the
doors in 1976. The oncefamous school is gone, but
not the lessons learned. The
Carmelite Mission and traditions continue in
Encino as well as South-Central Los Angeles
through alumni and generous supporters of the
Mount Carmel Alumni Foundation, an education
based 501c3 Non-Profit. The MCAF’s mission,
in addition to contributing to the AlexanderMcKeever tuition assistance fund at Crespi, is
to help the remaining Catholic schools in the
diocese Deanery 16. The MCAF helps fund
special needs and projects at these schools.
Through collaborations and strategic alliances,
the MCAF provides mentoring and counseling to
students and parents K to college. They provide
tuition assistance, book scholarships as well
as modest bridge-scholarships helping college
bound students. Thanks to superior preparation,
there are more than 30 students from SouthCentral Catholic secondary and Catholic high
schools that have matriculated to Marist College
in Poughkeepsie, New York as well as Marymount
College in Palos Verdes, California.
The MCAF is trying to help fund more deanery
16 schools for participation in the Los Angeles
diocese Junior High Academic Decathlons. The
cost is $4900.00 per school per year.
Six deanery schools are waiting for help.

incentives (bribes) like cookies & cupcakes from St.

radio stations, and perhaps a few cigars from anonymous
donors, politics at Carmel was like Tammany HallWest. When we all returned to the school yard at the
appropriate time for the next distribution, we discovered
that Brother had the wooden stumping platforms moved
from the school yard out onto The Field. Where Fr.
Elias had previously waded into the crowd swinging his
paddle like a police baton trying to restore a little order
his only response was a perfectly pitched apple core
in his ear. Now, I do not know who threw it, however,
James Macias’65 was in the area and he did go on to
coach pitchers from Little League through Connie Mack
for 20 years. During the next round of speech making
and voter incentive distributions, when chaos seemed
eminent, without breaking a sweat or saying a word Bro.
Lawrence simply turned on the sprinklers and the wouldbe rioters scattered like a flock of seagulls. The man was
a quiet genius.
If The Field is green today, it is from all the blood,
sweat and tears shed on it. I recall Bro. Lawrence
marching combatants out onto The Field to settle their
disagreements wearing 1 LB. boxing gloves to the delight
of the cheering, jeering student body. Once mutually
exhausted, humiliated, and testosterone depleted…
it was “Peaceful Shores” again. Bro. Lawrence was a
brilliant Dean of Discipline. One year, the student body
was getting a little too rambunctious (more like free-for- I know there are hundreds of memories to share about
alls) during ASB election week when receiving free voter The Field so….

WHO DESIGNED THE CRUSADER WEBSITE?
erry Kelly’63 was one of my high school heroes.
He was a senior when I was a sophomore. You
know, he could drive a car, and seemed always to
be surrounded by the best looking girls from St. Mary’s
Academy. Jerry played center on our OL and was named
first team All-Catholic League his senior year.
He was big at 6’3” 225 lbs and very agile and quick for
a big guy. I was lucky enough to play on the varsity my
sophomore year and did not mind doing one-on-one
drills with him even though he was 50 lbs bigger than
me. He may have knocked me out of my shoes a few
times…but he never stomped on my shoes…like most
other less-agile big guys. That was much more painful
than getting flat-backed.

It is the nature of the game that interior linemen get
little recognition on television and even less on radio
broadcasts. In addition to playing center, Jerry Kelly
was kind enough to down a punt on the Michigan State 1
yard line which required the radio announcer give Jerry
kudos, making the day for Joe and I sending us jumping
all over that parking lot in celebration.
Jerry received a degree in Accounting to bring home to

A HAIRE AFFAIR
O
n Tuesday, April 12th 2011, George Guzman’63
and I attended the monthly Crusader Luncheon
organized by Jim Haire’48. There were 15 or
16 Crusaders in attendance all laughing and lying. Lee
Vollmer’47 was there as well. Lee graduated from Carmel
the year I was born and looks 10 years younger than me.
Clearly, I am doing something wrong. George and I were
invited to bring them up to date with the activities of the
Mount Carmel Alumni Foundation, so we did. I enjoyed
visiting with John Gogian’48 and Earl Ricks’47. They
were very engaging and full of zest, enjoying sharing
Mt. Carmel memories. There was even one Crusader’s
childhood friend in attendance who graduated from
Loyola. “And the lion will lay down with the lamb.” I
hope that wasn’t a sign of the end of days. Just kidding,
I have two brother-in-laws that are Cubs and another one
from Cathedral. A good time was had by all. Call Jim
Haire’48 and try to make it to the next luncheon.
The Crusader Lunch Group meets every second
Tuesday of the Month.

IRISHMEN UNITE!
O
n the feast of Saint Patrick, March 17th 2011,
Crespi Carmelite High School once again hosted
a delicious corn beef luncheon with all the
trimmings and customary beverages required at such
events. About 40 Irish Crusaders and those who wished
they were Irish attended. Fr. Gus Carter, O Carm.’41 was
the featured Irishman. Fr. John Coleman, O Carm.’69
also stopped by for a visit. On that day Fr. John was half
Irish & half Mexican. It was rumored that on May 5th
2011, like a chameleon, he will become half Mexican
& half Irish. While growing up in St.Raphael’s parish
with the Coleman family it depended on which one of
his parents I was talking to that determined which half
was better.
On behalf of all who attended I would like to again
thank...Bridget…The Magician in the Kitchen.

DECEMBER BOARD MEETING:
A MT. CARMEL EDUCATION TAUGHT SERVICE TO OTHERS

know very well, Father Nagle was the charismatic,
“arm-twisting” founder of the original Padre Golf
Tournament that raised over $750,000 to provide
retirement benefits for The Carmelite Order of

a figure on campus from 1941 until 1976, whose
strength and guidance made a great impact on so
many lives. Every Mt. Carmel grad seems to have
his own anecdote about a memorable meeting with
