May 2010 Vol. XIV No. XI Presents the Musette Gazette www.azaccordionclub.com THE ACCORDION CLUB TALENT SHOW ( Review on page 5 and 10 ) GABE RODRIQUES, OUR GUEST ARTIST FOR THE JUNE 21ST MEETING Gabe is a fan of any style or genre of music and this program shows just that. His program contains elements of jazz, Latin, classical, folk, and some pop styles. He enjoys playing for a wide variety of audiences of any age and truly desires for everyone to have fun and enjoy the music. Gabe recently graduated with a degree in music therapy and will be playing and demonstrating what type of music is used for various populations, from autistic children to adults in nursing homes. In July he will be competing in the 2010 American Accordion Association Competition and Festival. Some of his contest selections will be included in the program including Czardas and Joe Morelli’s “My Isle of Emerald Green”. You will truly enjoy this young man's performance! Gabe Rodrigues grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona and is a recent graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy. Previously Gabe had studied piano beginning at age 7 and always had a lingering desire to play the accordion. In 2009 after observing a performance at the Frank Marocco Accordion Event he got his chance after meeting Dan and Joan Grauman who connected him with his current teacher. Gabe has been studying accordion with Ilmar Kuljus for the past year and has already performed with several local groups around Arizona including; The Bad Cactus Brass Band, The Dixie Devils, The Phoenix Cenizas Tango Group, Another Day, The Salt River Brass, the ASU Sun Devil Marching Band, as well as some solo groups and other small ensembles around ASU. In his music therapy practices Gabe uses the accordion frequently and with great success for a wide variety of clients from adults suffering from dementia, to young children with autism. After his music therapy internship he hopes to continue studying for his Master‟s Degree in Accordion Performance at ASU. Currently he teaches music classes at Gateway Academy, a charter school for children with autism. He also teaches piano privately through Arizona Piano Lessons. The pre-meeting music was played by Tony Longoria Y Conjunto, or to be more explicit for our non-Spanish speakers, Tony Longoria on the button box accordion and his sons, Armando on drums, Tony Jr. on bass and long time musician amego Richard Cruz on the bajo sexto. Tony Sr. and Richard also did vocals on several of the songs. There is no way I could name all the tunes they played, but “Volver, Volver” was one of them, which just happens to be a favorite of mine. What beautiful and refreshing entertainment! Tony Sr. has been a button box teacher at Ziggie‟s Music Studio for years and is well known around the Valley. He also has an original polka.”Celia”. on our ―Hot Original Polkas‖ CD. Thank you so much, gentlemen. It was wonderful! Next up was little seven year old Emily Attilio to play “Celieto Lindo,” then “Chiapanecas, the Mexican Hand Clapping Song.” That was great playing, Emily. You are a treat for everyone. The Collins boys came up to dazzle us with their expertise - Quinn played “Malaguena,” then Liam played “Lady of Spain,”, Quinn, again, for “Jolly Caballero.” You boys are so special, and your playing is superb! Thanks for playing for us. Now it was time for Joan Monti on accordion, accompanied by Chuck Barrett on drums and Larry Uidenich on guitar. They began with “Liechtensteiner Polka,” “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” sung by Chuck Barrett, and finished up with “In Heaven there Is No Beer” with Larry Uidenich on banjo and all three of them vocalizing. Very nice, folks. That was fun. Gabe Rodriques, who is getting ready to play in an upcoming accordion competition in Pennsylvania, played “Libertango” and followed up with “How Insensitive” with Eddie Detroit on bongos. Really enjoyable, you guys. Page 3 The Arizona Accordion Club Table of Contents Featured Guest Cover President’s Message Page 3 Our Meeting ! Well, it’s happening. Just take a look at our activities and at the people showing up at our meetings. I think our meetings would be disappointing for a lot of people now if we did not feature Emily Atillio, or Liam and Quinn Collins, or Gabe Rodriguez. Twenty-one fourth-grade accordionists are graduating to the fifth grade at New World Educational Center in downtown Phoenix. Their final talent show took place on Saturday, May 29, where they played in trios, quartets, and quintets. They have come a long way under the direction of our Arizona Accordion Club teachers and will have an even bigger and fuller musical curriculum as fifth graders. The school has decided that the accordion is the musical keyboard instrument of choice for introducing the children to the wide world of music. More importantly, the school’s teachers and administrators have commented that many of the children have performed better than ever before in their other subjects – and they point directly to the music program for the motivation and early development of academic success. The music program has developed confidence, mental acuity, and never-before-tapped physical skills. We will teach two grades next academic years, starting in August – both fourth and fifth graders. Just imagine if this program becomes a model for charter schools all over America. Just imagine the return of the accordion to a prominence it has not known for decades. Just imagine a new love for this instrument growing in the hearts of hundreds and thousands of young people. We have many Arizona Accordion Club members to thank for their time and donations. Please know that THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO RELAX. We need to purchase instruments, music, and music stands. Kindly consider making the NWEC Accordion Club program to be your favorite charity for this year’s tax return. If you want to help out, please contact one of our board members to get details. Oh, yes, and please don’t cheat yourself out of one of the most rewarding opportunities of your life. Join us at the school. You can help in many ways: be a tutor, be a teacher, be a substitute teacher, help with the logistics of music duplication, offer your creative ideas for concerts, and so much more. Working with the kids is more fun, more rewarding, more exciting, and more appreciated that probably anything else we do in the club. - Jack Page 4 The Arizona Accordion Club The ARIZONA ACCORDION CLUB ON THE TOWN Your AAC Night Out For June Is the 13th Sunday at 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at The Pulaski Club, 4331 E. McDowell, Phoenix The Pulaski Club is presenting Bob Doszak for the very last show of the season – and Bob himself is leaving the Valley for the entire summer, returning in early September. So Don’t Miss this Performance – THE LAST PARTY and DANCE of the YEAR at the PULASKI CLUB. Let’s all SUPPORT our member BOB DOSZAK YOUTH PROGRAM AT NEW WORLD EDUCATIONAL CENTER THURSDAY, JUNE 3, 2010 Our 21 fourth graders rocked the house with four tunes at the end-of-year Talent Show at the New World Educational Center charter school at which members of the Arizona Accordion Club deliver a complete music program using the 12-bass accordions. We were part of a show that comprised the whole gamut of musical enterprise – from solos to entire dance routines by large groups. We heard young people on violins, guitars, drums. We saw whole classes dance everything from salsa and mambo to rock – even the Chicken Dance. Groups sang along with instruments, as well as a capella. You can bet that, next year, our accordionists will accom- And ENJOY OURSELVES to the FULLEST. AS ALWAYS, FOOD AND DRINKS ARE SERVED… AND ALL THE ACTION IS ON THE DANCE FLOOR. In a word, if YOU are not part of this wonderful community outreach as a member of the Arizona Accordion Club, you are missing out on one of life’s true joys. As the culmination of a whole year of hard work on the part of our own members, together with teachers and administrators of the charter school, the Talent Show amazed us all with the potential for delivering a complete music program to today’s youth. YOU CAN MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE WITH YOUR CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS THIS YEAR If the charitable organizations and politicians you have been contributing to have not delivered 100% of what you desired, please consider redirecting your tax-deductible contributions to our young accordion students at the New World Educational Center. Helene M. Criscio In 2009 Helene passed away. She had been a member of the Arizona Accordion Club for many years. Many of our players have enjoyed her compositions that have been published by Santorella Publications. She was a lifetime resident of Westfield, MA and a great composer and performer. Her legacy lives on in her music. Here’s what we need: twenty-four large bass accordions (60120 basses), 24 solid metal music stands, books and music for 45 students, and administrative expenses. If we went out and paid cash at low retail or wholesales prices for all these important tools, it would run between five and six thousand dollars. Born in 1911 to Italian immigrant parents in Westfield, Massachusetts, Helene was bilingual and bicultural from early childhood. It was her Uncle Pete who let her try the accordion . Eventually Uncle Pete introduced Helene to a 17 year old accordion player named Angelo Criscio, and it was then that Helene learned to play. That might sound like a lot of money if you had to pay for it yourself. However, if every single one of our 200 registered members donated just $30, that would cover an entire year’s budget. Helene blossomed musically, publishing her first of many compositions, "Incanto d'Amore," at the age of 15. It’s probably not realistic that all 200 would donate so – with that in mind – please be as generous as possible for this kind of tax-deductible donation. Make your checks to the Arizona Accordion Club – and write YOUTH PROGRAM in the ―memo‖ section of your check. Send it to Pete Donatella, Treasurer, 4416 N. 102nd Drive, Phoenix, AZ 85037. A receipt will be mailed back to you. World War II came and Helene took a manufacturing job for the duration of the war. In 1945, with the war over, Helene resumed her musical career, teaching and performing solo. She had five accordion bands and they performed at Stanley Park. Here are the benefits: * 45 children get the music program they would never have had from any other source * It is proven that children who study music get better grades overall throughout their schooling * Music programs increase self-esteem, success rates, improvement in subjects like math and science, as well as interpersonal social skills and positive team playing * The accordion will once again achieve the respect and acceptance that it will never have again unless well all work hard in this outreach opportunity – with our time, our sweat, and our pocket books. Page 10 The Arizona Accordion Club The kids and their parents are very exciting about our efforts this year. Together, we have brought joy to the students but – more importantly – the kids are more motivated than ever before, they are doing better in their other studies, their attitudes are universally positive, and they are gaining in self-esteem from continued success with their music. Next year, we are slated to continue with this year’s fourth-grade graduates throughout their entire 5th grade, then to begin afresh with the new fourth grade class on the 12basses. We expect to train 45 youngsters between the ages of 9 and 11. AN ACCORDION PLAYER ―You Brought Your Accordion, Didn’t You??‖ By Pete Donatella I hadn’t brought it, and I did want to play, but I was in Albuquerque over 400 miles from my favorite accordion. What do I do now? This has happened before and it is usually an effort in futility to find a playable accordion in just a few hours. NOT SO, this time. My son had a few errands to run and I asked if I could ride along and have him also stop at a music store anywhere on his route. We made one stop and it turned out to be a ―strings only‖ store and when I asked if they knew of a store that carried piano accordions, the answer was, ―Well, there’s a piano store about two miles up the road‖. The word accordion was not even heard. My luck was about to change!! Across the same parking lot there was a music store called Music Mart that carries sheet music, books and recordings. It is quite large and has about 10 employees to assist you in finding some obscure piece of music. My answer to this young man’s question, ―How may I help you?‖ was, ―Would you be able to give me the name of a local professional ACCORDION PLAYER?‖ He didn’t even answer me. He picked up his phone and said, ―Dan, will you please come up here and SPEAK ACCORDION to someone?‖ I waited about 40 seconds only to see a handsome gentleman moving in my direction. We introduced ourselves and I told him that I was interested in borrowing a professional accordion for the weekend. He said he really couldn’t be of much help, but maybe someone in the local accordion club could help me. I said that was a great idea, and why didn’t I think of that. I told him I was the treasurer of the Arizona Accordion Club, and his next question was, ―How many members does your club have?‖ I said, ―a little over 200, how many does your club have?‖ He said, ―Nine!!‖ There were a few awkward moments here before Dan said that he could probably supply me with HIS own accordion. It was a La Burdini, and in good condition. He would need to go home and would have it at the store by 3:00 pm. Well this is exactly what happened. I returned at three to play a couple of tunes for Dan, and walked out of the store with his beautiful La Burdini. There was no charge, no contract, no STRINGS. Dan had checked the website of our club and he was convinced that his accordion would be in good hands. And it was. I had a ball playing it for our family party. There are most likely not a lot of Dan’s in the world, but I am proud to have found this one and I’m even more proud that he is AN ACCORDION PLAYER. The Arizona Accordion Club Page 11 Bob Doszak on accordion, with Jay Stevens on bass, Carl Nyberg on banjo and Chuck Barrett on drums, began their set by playing a nice polka, then “Emily Waltz,” and then another polka - I didn’t catch the names of the polkas - then someone asked for “Ain’t She Sweet,” so the group belted it out. That was neat. After the break, Ted Lee played “Begin the Beguine” and “South of the Border.” That was nice, Ted. The Ensemble, consisting of Pete Donatella, Jerry Szymanski and Jack Dermody on accordions, Jay Stevens on bass, and Eddie Detroit on bongos played “Besame Mucho.” Then Jerry Szymanski and Pete Donatella on accordion, with Jay Stevens on bass, and Eddie Detroit on snare drum now, played “Amour”. Jack Dermody and Ted Lee rejoined the group on their accordions for a very pretty Victor Leone arrangement of “Green Waters.” Then Jack and Pete, with Eddie Detroit on bongos again, played ―Girl from Ipanima.‖ Now a special treat, as Pete Donatella and Eddie Detroit played their theme song from years past, accompanied by Jay Stevens on bass. Next the whole group joined in on “La Bamba,” which, coincidentally, is one of the tunes that Jack, Pete, and Ted have taught to the children at the Charter School, who play it on their accordions and also sing it! Ted Lee closed with his “Patriotic Medley.” Good Job, Ensemble! Domenic Feroce closed the show with “Piemontesina,” “La Companole,” and ended with “Celieto Lindo.” Really well done, Domenic. You get better every time you play! What a perfect ending for our Latin Night! Well, I’ll leave you with one of ―as my Dad always said‖ sayings ―It is what you learn after you know it all that counts!‖ See you on June 21st. Get “Hot Original Polkas” Now !
