English Language Arts: Additional Learning Resources • Grade 9
Foreword
T
his list of learning resources identifies additional resources that have been recommended by
the Ministry of Education to support the Grade 9 English Language Arts Curriculum. This list
will be updated as new resources become available.
There is no single resource that provides support for all the outcomes in a grade-specific English
language arts curriculum. When purchasing resources from this list, it is advisable to select a
variety of resources so all three goals of the English language arts will be supported. Other
resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support the Grade 9 English
Language Arts Curriculum. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select
materials that best meet the needs of their school or community. These resources should be
chosen in accordance with the school division’s learning resources selection policy.
Pricing of the learning resources contained in this document is subject to change without notice
by the publishers and/or distributors.
The abbreviation (CAN) indicates that a Canadian contributed to the development of the
resource or that it includes Canadian content. Similarly, (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person
contributed to the development of the resource, or that it includes Saskatchewan content. (WNCP)
indicates that the resource was selected through the evaluation processes of the Western and
Northern Canadian Protocol for Collaboration in Basic Education.
The Ministry of Education expresses its appreciation to publishers, producers, and distributors who
have provided learning resources for evaluation, and gratefully acknowledges the contributions
made by educators who served as evaluators.

Adolescent Literacy includes articles from
educational thinkers and practitioners to
address advances in research on adolescent
learning, to assess current practices to meet
the challenges of the twenty-first century,
and to discover transformative ideas and
methods that turn the promise of education
into instructional practice. Adolescent Literacy
discusses issues such as English language
learners, struggling readers, technology in
the classroom, multimodal literacy, writing
instruction, engagement, and young adult
literature. In addition, Adolescent Literacy’s
assessment rubrics for teachers, administrators,
and staff developers make it a good resource
for professional development, while its
accompanying study guide works for smallgroup discussions.

The Alchemist’s Daughter
Author: Kernaghan, Eileen
Annotation
Sidonie Quince lives in Elizabethan England.
Her father is an alchemist who conducts
unsuccessful experiments in an effort to
transmute base metals into gold. He promises
the Queen results, and Sidonie fears for his life
if he fails.
Sidonie has a gift for scrying – foretelling the
future by gazing into a crystal. Sidonie and
her friend, Kit, set off to Glastonbury Abbey in
search of the missing ingredient that will make
her father’s experiments successful.
Many historical characters and events provide
the backdrop for Sidonie’s adventures,
including Queen Elizabeth I, William
Shakespeare, Sir Philip Sidney, and the
Spanish Armada. Conversations sometimes
are conducted using words, expressions, and
linguistic structures typical of the Elizabethan
period.

Written in diary format by Vera, readers learn
about the evacuation of the Aleut people from
the Aleutian Islands during World War II. By
focusing on a handful of fictional characters,
Hesse tells of the hardships that the Aleuts
endured when the Japanese occupied these
islands near Alaska. The short prose poems
reveal how the Aleutians suffered, and readers
also learn about their history and culture.
Included are examples of poetic devices such
as imagery, simile, and alliteration.
The format of prose poetry could be used for
the study of contextual cueing systems.

This version of the Cinderella story is set in
China during the reign (1368-1398) of the
Emperor Hung Wu, the first emperor of the
Ming Dynasty. Xing Xing’s father dies, and she
is bound in servitude to her stepmother and to
her stepsister, who is undergoing the painful
process of foot binding, in order to make her
more marriageable. While hiding the bones
of a pet fish killed by her stepmother, Xing
Xing discovers a green silk gown and golden
slippers that belonged to her mother. Dressed
in this fine clothing, Xing Xing goes to the
festival where she loses a slipper. As in the
Cinderella story, Xing Xing meets her prince
and the story ends with happily ever after.
Xing Xing’s story makes it clear that in
traditional Chinese life, women were not
valued and daughters were considered a
liability.

Digging for Philip
Author: Jackson-Davis, Greg
Annotation
(CAN) This novel is the story of a 14-year-old
boy who does not fit in and is struggling with
the accidental death of his father. Philip is a
social outcast, who is bitter towards his mother
and blames her for his father’s death.
Philip takes a summer retreat near the Lake
of the Woods and disturbs the gravesite of
an Anishinaabe spirit, Tikumiwaewidung.
The spirit uses Philip to properly lay to rest
the First Nations people who died during the
colonization of the lake area. Through Philip’s
experiences, he gains a greater appreciation
for both historical First Nations life and the
underpinnings of his current life. Philip has
the courage to face his own prejudices and
misunderstandings. Both Philip and the
Anishinaabe spirit expose and reveal their
prejudices as the plot develops.

Discovering Mythology Series
Annotation
Each book in the series is organized around
a theme such as heroes or monsters and
includes six or seven chapters. The chapters
present traditional narratives from various
cultures relating to the theme of the book.
This allows readers to note similarities and
differences across cultures and across time.
Some of the cultures featured include ancient
Greece and Rome, Scandinavia, Africa, India,
Persia, China, and Egypt. Each book includes
at least one narrative from a North or South
American Indigenous peoples. The books are
illustrated with black-and-white photos, maps,
and drawings. Sidebars present additional
information relating to particular narratives.
Each book has a table of contents, a list of
notes, a list of references, a bibliography for
additional reading, and an index.
The books contain many names that will
be unfamiliar to most readers and lacks a
pronunciation key. American terminology is
used throughout the series. For example, the
term “Native Americans” is used rather than
“First Nations”; the term “tribe” is used rather
than “First Nation”.

(CAN) A Drop of Rain uses diary/journal format
to describe the lives of Naomi, her family, and
friends over a three-month period. Naomi’s
aunt Hanna is dying, her single mother is
stressed and distracted, and her mother’s male
friend makes the situation more complicated.
Naomi is attracted to Curtis and concerned
about her friend Mary, a middle-aged cleaner
who was a doctor in her native Poland. Naomi
also copes with school and a part-time job.
There are journal entries from all the main
characters; therefore, the story is told from
a range of perspectives. Several of the main
characters come from Poland and a great
deal of information about Poland, past and
present, is interwoven with descriptions of
the characters’ daily thoughts, feelings, and

Curtis’ father is gay, a minor character considers

Everest Series
Author: Korman, Gord
Annotation
An advertising company is sponsoring a climb
up Mount Everest in order to set a record for
the youngest person to reach the top. Twenty
teenagers arrive at a boot camp to compete for
four spots on the climbing team.
The Contest is the story of the boot camp and
how the would-be climbers are eliminated
until four are left. The novel begins with a
prologue that describes, without mentioning
names, a funeral for one of the climbers who
dies on Everest. Readers have to read the series
to find out which climber does not make it
back.
In The Climb, the four climbers, Dominic,
Sammi, Perry, and Tilt, along with team leader
Cap Cicero and videographer Sneezy Tkakzuk,
begin their ascent of Mount Everest. They make
it to the Spur, when a high-altitude rescue
ends their climb, and they end up back at Base
Camp. Throughout their adventures, someone
is sending information to a tabloid newspaper
– information that focuses on personal foibles,
rather than on the climb, and makes the
climbers look superficial or silly.

The protagonist in this novel is chosen by
powerful adults to carry out an important task.
Set in a futuristic society that emerges after
great destruction on planet Earth, Kira is left
homeless after her mother dies mysteriously.
Kira is threatened with death because she has a
deformed leg, and her society sees no purpose
for those who cannot do hard labour. Kira is
saved because, like her mother, she is able to
dye threads.
The Council of Guardians gives her the job of
repairing and restoring the robe of the Singer,
the oral historian who presides at the annual
harvest time Gathering celebration. Through
her work, Kira discovers that she has real talent
for creating new and beautiful patterns. She
also discovers, however, that her temporary
privileged status will eventually bring her
doom. This novel is an examination of a future
society that will challenge readers to think
about community, creativity, and the values
they have learned to accept.

(CAN) At the end of the Second World War,
about 1,000 teenage Jewish orphans came
to Canada and settled in 38 communities in
Canada. This real-life event in Canadian history
is told through the fictional stories of Danny,
Lilli, and Marilyn.
Danny survives the Buchenwald concentration
camp but loses his entire family. Lilli is an
Auschwitz survivor who saw her mother and
younger sister sent to their death, and was
separated from her other sister by the refugee
process. She hopes for a new life in Canada,
but has bad experiences with foster families.
Marilyn is a Canadian girl, who goes to school
with the newcomers and gradually comes to
understand the adversities that shape their
lives and influence their reactions to Canadian
life.
The story is told against a background of the
Holocaust and the German concentration
camps. Readers learn about the horrors of the
camps, the atrocities that took place there,
and the way that prisoners survived. The
year is 1947, and readers also learn about the
clothing, slang, family life, and community
expectations of the time. There is information
about attitudes toward immigrants and the
way that immigrants were treated during this
period in Canada’s history.

I Read It, But I Don’t Get It:
Comprehension Strategies for
Adolescent Readers
Author: Tovani, Cris
Annotation
Many useful ideas for improving adolescents’
comprehension are included in this slim,
highly readable volume. I Read It, But I Don’t
Get It is organized into three parts. Parts 1 and
2 contain chapters that pertain to topics such
as “Fake Reading”, “Connecting the New to the
Known”, and “What’s the Plan?” Each chapter
begins with a student quote and an anecdote
involving a problem in reading encountered by
the author in an actual classroom of adolescent
students. The strategies presented in the book
are based on research that defines the thinking
strategies used by proficient readers. The roles
of purpose in reading, motivation, and use of
prior experiences constitute the basis for many
of the strategies. The notion that meaning in
reading is constructed as readers interact with
text is at the root of the strategies presented.
Part 3 consists of three short appendices
that contain forms to be used to facilitate
implementation of the strategies presented in
the preceding chapters.

Ice Story: Shackleton’s Lost
Expedition
Author: Kimmel, Elizabeth Cody
Annotation
Kimmel’s account of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s
1914 expedition to cross Antarctica relies
on Shackleton’s memoirs and original
photographs to recreate the events. Kimmel
tries to put the story in historical perspective
by comparing the exploration of Antarctica to
the exploration of space. This account of the
quest to stand on the South Pole presents the
background of the Antarctica explorers, as
well as an introduction to the crew members
of the shipwrecked Endurance. The crew
survive months of frostbite, penguin stew,
and boredom while they hope for rescue.
The author’s storytelling shows Shackleton
as a leader whose first concern was his crew’s
safety.

Inkheart
Author: Funke, Cornelia
Annotation
The arrival of a strange scarred man one night
reveals Meggie’s father’s ability to bring literary
characters to life. Mo’s talent, however, has an
unfortunate element: as a fictional character
emerges, a real person is transported into the
pages of the story. This is the fate of Meggie’s
mother. Thus begins a desperate escape from
the villains of Inkheart, and a search for the
author in hopes that an alternate denouement
will be written.

Into Thin Air: A Personal Account
of the Mount Everest Disaster
Author: Krakauer, Jon
Annotation
Into Thin Air is a firsthand account of the
tragic commercial expedition to Mount
Everest in 1996, in which eight climbers died.
Krakauer, a mountain climber and journalist
from the United States, balances the view
of the ego-driven mountain climbers, the
underappreciated Sherpa guides, and the
inexperienced amateurs’ desire to reach
beyond one’s human limitations. Krakaeur
investigates the catastrophe and what went
wrong on the summit the day of the storm.

As a member of an all-boy company preparing
to perform Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer
Night’s Dream in a London replica of the
Globe Theatre, Nathan Field becomes ill and
is mysteriously transported to Elizabethan
England. This time-travel novel conveys the
sights, sounds, and smells of Elizabethan
England as Nathan befriends Shakespeare.
The details of 16th century troupe life as well
as how costumes, makeup, and stage effects
were carried out add depth to the story. Woven
into the description of the past is the story
of Nathan and his attempts to deal with the
deaths of both his parents.
This novel with its multifaceted themes would
be a good choice to use partnered with
Shakespeare’s original play.

The Last Book in the Universe
Author: Philbrick, Rodman
Annotation
Philbrick has written an imaginative, disturbing
story about a bleak and dangerous future
world. A teenage boy called Spaz, because
of his epilepsy, undergoes a journey to find
his adoptive sister, Bean. Spaz still has his
memory because he cannot take the druglike mindprobes that turn the others into
zombies. Ryter, an old man, accompanies Spaz
on his adventure because he is one of the few
people who still remembers and values books.
Lanya, a female “proov” (genetically improved
human), takes the group to Eden, an idyllic
proov community that is different from the
dangerous toxic Urbs where “normals” live.
When Ryter is killed by a mob, Spaz must tell
his story in “the last book in the universe”.

The Losers’ Club
Author: Lekich, John
Annotation
(CAN) This novel tells the story of one
teenager’s attempt to break free of his loser
status. Fifteen-year-old Alex Sherwood starts
the Losers’ Club for the school outcasts in
order to deal with the aggressive bullying at
McLuhan High. Alex has a disability, but Lekich
depicts Alex’s disability as just another one
of life’s challenges as a teen. Alex suggests a
contest with school bully Jerry Whitman in
the local Christmas lights competition. Alex
is supported by other teens who have been
harassed by Jerry, and by some sympathetic
adults. Lekich shows how teens can deal with
a number of issues such as bullying and peer
pressure. Lekich portrays Alex not as a victim of
his disability, but as an individual ready to deal
with the world on his terms.

Night’s Dream

meet the designers and the artisans who
assemble the production. Viewers explore
themes of romance, fantasy, and confused

in which Puck comes across the four lovers
in the woods. In-depth conversations with
Stratford’s artistic director, Richard Monette,
provide further insight in staging a theatrical
production.

No Time to Say Goodbye:
Children’s Stories of Kuper Island
Residential School
Authors: Olsen, Sylvia, Morris, Rita, and Sam,
Ann
Annotation
(CAN) This novel is the fictional story of five
young people from the Tsartlip First Nations
who were sent to the Kuper Island Residential
School. The government and the churches took
children from their homes for long periods of
time, during which they were not permitted
to see their families. The authors try to deal
with some of the abuses that occurred such as
mandatory haircuts, sexual abuse, poor food,
loneliness, and humiliation over bedwetting.
Readers witness the struggle of the students to
survive in such a harsh culture.

(CAN) While hockey provides a thematic strand
for the book, the protagonist, Sean, has more
to address than pressures of the team sport
and a perfectionist father. Complex family
issues include an ethical situation that requires
Sean to decide whether to do what is right or
to support his father by withholding evidence
involving criminal charges. The story is one
that provides the hook of hockey and a familiar
prairie setting in Alberta, but is given depth
through the issues and the complexities of
human relationships.

Annotation
Marjane Satrapi writes about her own
experiences as a child in Iran. A graphic novel
about Iranian culture and history, the story
is told with a sense of humour, and it offers
insight into the culture of Iran, and the impact
of the Islamic revolution on the Iranian people.
As the only child of revolutionaries, Satrapi’s
life changes dramatically. Marjane found it
very difficult to live under such strict rules,
and her disobedient behaviour put her family
in danger. Her parents were forced to send
her to live in Europe for her own safety until
she was 14. We learn from Marjane’s story of a
childhood based on terrorism and war that the
actions of a few extremists do not reflect the
attitude of a nation.

Literacy in the Lives of Young Men
Authors: Smith, Michael W. and Wilhelm,
Jeffrey D.
Annotation
The authors interviewed 49 Middle and
Secondary Level male students from a wide
range of backgrounds in order to determine
how the young men use literacy and what
conditions promote it. Several factors
under consideration include socioeconomic
background, race, performance, and type of
school. The research shows boys favour literacy
activities outside of school that provide escape
to get away from the stresses in their lives.
The authors explain how progressive curricula
and instruction can help boys become more
engaged with literacy. The authors note that
the same principles could apply to girls as well
as boys.

This contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s
infamous tale features the two young lovers
meeting on the Internet. Their interracial high
school romance is threatened by their parents’
prejudices and opposition from the local gang.
Parallel to the play, the fated pair’s plan to be

This updated tale of forbidden love
complements the study of Romeo and Juliet,
but can also stand alone as a novel.

Shipwreck at the Bottom of
the World: The Extraordinary
True Story of Shackleton and
Endurance. 1st paperback ed.
6
7
This is an interesting recounting of the survival
story of Ernest Shackleton’s adventure. Ernest
Shackleton and his crew were attempting
to cross Antarctica. When the Endurance
became icebound in Antarctica in 1914, Sir
Ernest Shackleton and his crew of 27 were
166 kilometres from land. Although their
mission was unsuccessful, their survival story is
remarkable. The men played on the ice to pass
time after the Endurance sank. They took to
their lifeboats and spent a year travelling over
ice, water, and mountains to safety. In 1916,
Shackleton led a rescue party to retrieve his
men and, remarkably, the entire crew survived.
The photos provide an opportunity to witness
what the crew experienced during the journey.

father has become invisible, and his sister Lily

In this sequel to Stravaganza: City of Masks,
Georgia’s stepbrother Russell makes her life
miserable. Georgia loves horses, and when
she buys a tiny winged horse in an antique
shop, she develops the ability to move back

a jockey and, disguised as a boy, wins an
important race. Georgia is a strong, determined
individual who overcomes difficulties, and
focuses on achievement. In the end, Russell’s
meanness is revealed and he is forced to leave

The sections of the novel that are set in
contemporary England feature English
expressions and terminology, while the
sections set in Talia are full of Italian names.
While this might be challenging for some
readers, it also emphasizes the difference
between Georgia’s two worlds.
Teachers should note that Georgia’s
stepbrother Russell uses coarse, vulgar words
and expressions – a reflection of his unpleasant
personality.

Theories of Relativity. 1st ed.
6
7
(CAN) In Theories of Relativity, Haworth-Attard
has written about the harsh reality of young
runaways living on the street. The author’s style
of describing life on the street is very realistic.
Dylan Wallace calls himself the “throwaway”
child. His mother has three children fathered
by different men. On his 16th birthday, his
mother throws him out because his mouthy
presence might prevent her from marrying her
fiancé. Dylan struggles with the challenges he
has received in life, and he tries to avoid a life
of crime and drugs.
Haworth-Attard provides a cast of secondary
characters including Amber, who shows how
difficult it is for someone to extricate herself
from street life once she becomes part of it.
Dylan reads from Einstein’s book about his
theories of relativity and time, and Dylan has
his own theories about life based on his own
experiences. Dylan is a clever young man who
has been dealt some harsh circumstances.
Dylan grows and realizes his true potential as
he matures trying to survive on the street.

Annotation
Written by Jamling Norgay, a Sherpa guide,
this book is a tribute to his father who climbed
with Sir Edmund Hilary, and reached the
summit in 1953. Norgay describes his Everest
summit experience of leading the IMAX team
during the tragic 1996 summer climbing
expedition. He parallels his journey with his
father’s experience, drawing heavily on his
culture, his religious beliefs as a Buddhist,
and the climbing rituals of the Sherpas.
Norgay consistently provides insight into the
reverence and respect his people have for the
mountain. What many westerners attribute to
the individual’s culmination of strength and
perseverance, the Sherpas believe is a gift of
faith.

The book presents best practices to improve
vocabulary instruction. The strategies are
practical, classroom-based, and can be used
with reluctant readers and gifted learners.
Chapters are sequential so an understanding
of basic vocabulary principles are presented
before they are taught to students with diverse
needs. Novice and experienced educators
would find this publication useful. The author
suggests that educators can use the content of
the book as a basis to re-examine their literacyinstructional practices.

The Watcher
Author: Buffie, Margaret
Annotation
(CAN) Fifteen-year-old Emma is a child apart –
not only from the other students at school and
in her community, but from her family as well.
She looks and feels different, as many other
teens do. While her parents pursue their daily
routine, Emma senses danger. She knows that
she must watch over the family day and night,
but she does not know why. Things spin out of
control when she takes a summer job caring
for an eccentric, elderly neighbour, and Emma
is drawn into playing a strange board game.
This fantasy with subthemes of alienation and
belonging would be a good addition to a unit
dealing with the unknown.

This novel about Wendy Darling, written
before she met Peter Pan, deals with issues
of infidelity, caregiver abuse, madness,
and maturation. Wendy is outspoken and
often gets into trouble. After being severely
punished by the nanny, she sneaks out of the
nursery to spy on her parents at one of their
parties. During the party, Wendy discovers that
her father is unfaithful. Later, the children are
sent to Rosegrove, a summer retreat. Wendy
loves Rosegrove because she can see Thomas,
who has a disability. Wendy learns that Thomas
is really her brother who was sent away
because he was not socially acceptable to her
father. Wallace describes the hypocrisy and
cruelty of the privileged class in 20th-century
London.

The novel portrays the British Columbian First

not an action-filled book, it gives voice to many
issues related to power, racism, bullying, love,
homosexuality, and stereotyping. The story

This book is a collection of articles that explore
the impact of stereotyping in children’s books
about Aboriginal peoples. Poetry, art, and
stories by Aboriginal peoples accompany the
essays. The heart of this volume is the section
that includes reviews of children’s and young
adult books, most of which were published
from the 1950s to the late 1980s. Teachers
reading this section will want to revisit and reevaluate materials in their collections.
The book also contains a section entitled “How
to Tell the Difference”. This section contains
valuable information about what to look for
when evaluating or choosing books about
Aboriginal peoples. The guidance in this book
is excellent, and helpful for teachers, librarians,
and parents who want to include exemplary
literature containing Aboriginal content in
their collections.
Please note that because this is a republication,
some dated items have been deleted and
