HOSPITELL April 4, 2014 3 Words put H3W into action Dear Colleagues: As I’ve mentioned in previous columns, the H3W Leadership Behaviors program has made a big difference in my life, both professionally and personally. I’ve already written about one of the behaviors, being “in the moment.” And while that is the first leadership behavior we are taught, it is just the beginning. Recently, I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the value of two more leadership behaviors — “having courageous conversations” and “being curious vs. judgmental.” Practicing these behaviors no matter what your title is will be integral as we work together towards continuous improvement. Since Windham Hospital is farther along the H3W journey, work groups have been established throughout the organization. I attended some of these meetings and am thankful for the opportunity to have such open and honest conversations with staff members. It was a really enlightening experience, and an experience I hope to have on a regular basis at both Windham and Backus hospitals. People were authentic and humanistic. They were engaged and enthusiastic. And while they were not judgmental, they were definitely curious — which I admit led to some courageous conversations. In a nutshell, these meetings put our H3W language into action. And while not everything was easy to talk about, this is exactly the kind of communication we need to have across our region. No one should be afraid to ask questions, to speak openly and candidly, Dave’s Desk about how they feel. Although many times we might not get the answers we hope for, sometimes just getting a straight answer to a question, or even hearing “I don’t know,” can go a long way. It’s all about transparency. Soon, these workgroups will be formed on the Backus campus. Our steering committee is hard at work to make this happen, and training is underway so that all staff understand H3W leadership behaviors. But you don’t have to wait — start practicing leadership behaviors now. Be in the moment, be authentic and humanistic, be accountable, provide timely and clear feedback, to name a few — and you will be amazed at how doing these things can transform your environment at work and at home. That’s all for now, Dave Jeepin’ for the Cause event to benefit Windham Windham Hospital First Cook and Chef Ron Doucette checks on things in the kitchen during the mid-day meal Wednesday. Ron has worked at Windham for more than 20 years. “Jeepin’ for the Cause” — a recreational Jeep ride sponsored by Capitol Chrysler Dodge Jeep to benefit Windham Hospital — will be held Sunday, May 4, from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Capitol Jeep at 1520 W. Main St. in Willimantic. A presentation on four-wheeling basics, safety, and environmental issues will be provided by the trail guides starting 9 a.m. Group rides begin at 10 a.m. The rides will return to Capitol Jeep around 1:30 p.m. Space is limited and pre-registration is encouraged. Only pre-registration will guarantee a spot in the event. Registrations will be accepted on the morning of the event depending upon availability. Music, games and prizes will be awarded at a barbecue to follow. For more information, contact Rudy Pizzoferrato at 860-423-4516 or [email protected]. April 4, 2014 HOSPITELL 5 Backus Bennies honor ‘celebrities’ for their support In the spirit of the Oscars, Backus welcomed benefactors to the third annual Bennies event on Friday, March 28, in true celebrity style — with red carpet glamour, paparazzi photos and golden award statues. With Hollywood style, the Office of Philanthropy and Development recognized donors for their generous contributions and highlighted programs and services made possible by their support. Using creativity and imagination, the Backus Bennies rivals ordinary donor events — breaking convention and setting a new standard of excellence. Guests come out in their finest gowns and suits to be honored for helping to bring better health to Eastern Connecticut. “Throughout the year, our benefactors provide support to perpetuate health initiatives in our community. The Bennies event is just one way for us to express our gratitude,” said Genevieve Schies, Program Manager for the Backus Office of Philanthropy and Development. “As confirmed by clinicians in the audience, donor gifts make a daily impact on our patients and allow us to carry out our mission of putting the patients first — always.” Hosting this year’s event, mistresses of ceremonies Mary Bylone, RN, MSM, CNML, Regional Vice President of Patient Care Services and Daryl Hurlock, RN, Regional Manager of LDRP and the Women’s Health Clinic, bounced a humorous dialogue back and forth. Hurlock told the audience that she had “some experience for the job” — having been to the Oscars 14 times herself. With her official badge in hand, Hurlock explained how she fills seats for celebrities who need to leave the floor during the star-studded ceremony. To date, benefactors have helped to facilitate more than 750 health and wellness encounters with Baltic residents. Whitehead concluded, “We have two simple words for you — thank you. Your gifts stay local and sustain a healthy community. Without your support, the programs I spoke about tonight would not be possible. Thank you for helping us achieve our aspirations for a healthier tomorrow.” More on the Web n For more snapshots from the Bennies, check out our photo gallery at backushospital. org/browse/ galleries
