BAYBERRY QUILTERS OF CAPE COD
Volume XXX
Issue 1
September 2011
PIECE FROM THE TOP
Dear Quilting Friends,
Thirty years of quilt shows and Bayberry members continue to raise the bar each year.
This year we had a record 324 quilts. Attendance increased, perhaps due to the amazing
newspaper articles about Bayberry and the raffle quilt. This year’s raffle proceeds will
generously fund scholarships and tool ships for students at Cape Cod Tech. The Cape Cod
National Seashore Challenge was a show stopper in itself. Weren’t you awed by the
diversity and talent of our members just in that one exhibit?
Thanks to Katherine Major and Claude Danner, our show chairmen, and to all the
volunteers who gave generously of their time and certainly to those who entered their quilts.
We have so much talent and enthusiasm in our guild, and it always shows in our
spectacular annual quilt show. I’ve heard our quilt show is becoming a vacation destination!
September 10th is our QUILT-IN and NEW MEMBER TEA which will be held at the
West Dennis Graded Schoolhouse from 10:00am to 3:00pm. The morning SHARE OUR SKILLS lesson is making
your official BAYBERRY QUILTERS NAMETAG. So, ladies, this is your chance to make your nametag if you have
lost or never sat down to make one. We are again inviting all the new members to the morning session as well as to
the afternoon tea, so they will have a head start on making their nametag before the first guild meetings. If you
cannot attend in the morning, try to come at 1:00pm for refreshments and to warmly greet our new members.
We’re offering a NEW CHALLENGE to all members this year. We’ve all seen the joyful children at the show
hugging or waving their pillows made at Kids Can Sew, and yet this year for the first time there were no quilts in the
Youth Category; we usually have 15-20 or more. Some of these past participants have outgrown the age category
and so it’s time for each of us to pass on our love of quilting by teaching a child to quilt this year. A child, a
grandchild, or a neighbor—we have to pass on our own skills to both boys and girls. This past year you rose to the
challenge of making over 100 happy pillowcases for children with cancer; in one month alone you made 122 quilts
for tsunami victims in Japan. Let’s see what you can do as “Quilting Mentors”. Order the youth ribbons, Claude,
we’re going to need them! Christine and I challenge you!
We are pleased to welcome all our NEW MEMBERS to Bayberry. If you were overwhelmed by the quilts made
by some of our expert quilters, just remember we were all new quilters at one time. Please ask questions and try
some of the activities we offer like the Quilt-In or a workshop. We are happy you chose to join Bayberry; we look
forward to a wonderful year of new friendships, colorful snippets and happy stitches.

SEPTEMBER 2011
Have you ever wanted to make a memory quilt?
Or, perhaps you want to try your hand at becoming
an art quilter and making 3-D holographic images?
You are in for a treat. Wen Redmond is coming to
Bayberry in September. Wen is a fiber artist whose
work has been showcased in Quilting Arts
magazine and on the Quilting Arts TV Show, among many other
places.
TRUNK SHOW: September 27 and 28
WORKSHOP: September 28 - Easy Image Transfer
An image, such as a photograph, old drawings or even junk mail
may be transferred to material. Wen will demonstrate and teach
how easy it is to transfer onto fabric. We will be able to create
lovely aged and distressed images.
WORKSHOP: September 29 - Holographic Memories
Digital photographs will be used to capture your favorite people
or favorite subjects in 3-D. You will create the effect of a
holographic picture. You will be amazed at the beauty you created
and impressed with your creative abilities.

SHARE OUR SKILLS
Share our Skills is Bayberry’s Quilt-In theme.
Have you learned a new technique you would
be willing to demonstrate? Do you have a favorite new
pattern or book you would like to recommend? Let me know
so that we can share them with our members.
September 9: 9:30am - Making Name Tags
1:00pm - New Members Tea
Members are asked to contribute a sweet or savory dish
for the tea. Volunteers are needed to help set up the table for
the tea. Please contact Diane McGuire and let her know how
you can help. Diane will provide crockery, coffee, tea, punch,
etc.

Carol Shinn: Carol “paints” with machine embroidery and we can
learn to paint too. She works with all levels of students, so
whether you’re a beginner or advanced, come join the fun. Using
a basic machine, we will explore surface design and
embellishments. Emphasis will be on creating a surface saturated
with layers of thread. Carol will explain her process of using heattransfer images and individual styles of “mark making.” Ideas for
designing, techniques for troubleshooting and options for finishing
will be discussed.

Pearls were to be found
everywhere at Bayberry’s 30th Anniversary
Celebration. The Show was an incredible
success thanks to all the dedicated
members of the Show Committee who
worked so hard, all the volunteers, and the
outstanding press coverage, all of which
contributed to an increased attendance of
more than 2,000 visitors. On Friday afternoon we ran out of raffle
tickets. Mary Walker rose to the occasion, went home and
printed enough tickets to sell on Saturday.
Everyone looked chic in their pearls. Thanks to Ruth Wilcox
for the beautiful pearl and ribbon decorations for the volunteer
badges which added to the festive theme of this year.
The press coverage was outstanding. Peg Bernard, our
Publicity Chair, was able to get a substantial article on our charity
effort toward Japan and then another one on Our Cape Cod quilt
and the quilt show in the Cape Cod Times. The colored poster
she produced was eye-catching and was found in many unusual
places. The week prior to the Quilt Show, multiple articles were
published in various Cape Cod newspapers which helped to
increase attendance. Sharon Wilson kept up with all the latest
show information on our website and responded to increased
requests via that venue. A job well done!
But the pearls this year were the 281 quilts (another record
number) our members managed to complete. Sydney Glover,
our new Curator and her co-Chairs, Marge Farquharson and Sue
Hart, planned a well organized layout thanks to the pictures you
sent, had some additional racks built and used some new cream
backdrops. Each quilt category was adjacent and easier to
compare and vote for the Viewers Choice awards.
The Cape Cod National Seashore display of the 55
Challenge quilts on sea blue backdrops was absolutely
breathtaking and a showstopper. All of our visitors were awed by
the creativity, the variety and the vision of the individual
renditions, all using a piece of the swampy common fabric.
Thank you, Leslie Bird and Ruth Wilcox for pushing 55 of us,
another record number, to think out of the box. Please visit this
exhibit again at the National Seashore in Eastham, in October
The “Featured Quilter” exhibits by Mary Wheatley and
Paula Tuaño were a marvelous retrospective of their many
talents. They were both on hand to discuss their various interests
and techniques. What an inspiration to all!
However, the Quilt Show is only as impressive as its behind
the scene organization. Early on Nancy McConnell signed the
contract with the school, arranged for the caterer, night security,
rack movers and rental tables. All went smoothly and on budget.
Ellie Held’s registration data base simplified quilt
registrations, quilt sign-ins and quilt returns.
Joan Andrews did a herculean task of creating and printing
programs, quilt tags, display frames for the featured quilters and
signs wherever needed. She also ordered our ribbons and this
year contracted for the 500 tote bags displaying our raffle quilt.
She is our Editor “Extraordinaire”!
Nancy Drew and Alyce Travelo gathered a large number of
“white glove” volunteers who were there to answer questions
and turn quilt backs on request.
Betty Crowell and Mary Walker did a fantastic job on the
admission and volunteer fronts. Despite the 25% increase in
visitors, they were able to handle the admissions swiftly thanks to
their cheerful and enthusiastic volunteers.
Mary Ann Hamshire secured advertisers despite a tough
economy. Maureen Cunningham and Marian Cawley kept 29
vendors happy who were, in turn, delighted by the success of our
show and therefore their own. Once again Teresa Begley kept
our finances in order and provided daily updates on admissions.
Let’s not forget the committees with a more visible
presence at the show:
Kids Can Sew: Estelle Trzcinski and her team made quite a
few children happy making pillows and other items.
Scavenger Hunt: Ellie Held again set up that treasure hunt
and prizes were handed out to all the children who found
treasures in the quilts.
Quilt Bank: Grace Filliman did her usual energetic job of
coordinating the Quilt Bank activities, displaying charity quilts,
and informing the public about the Quilt Bank’s mission.
Bayberry in Action: Diane McGuire and her team were
teaching multiple projects to a large variety of attendees,
including teenagers and one male who decided to try his hand
at our craft. She also took care of ordering the note cards which
were sold out by Friday morning. (A second printing is in the
works).

Lectures and Demos: Evelyn
Gauthier, a new Committee member,
displayed a delightful excitement and professional attitude in
her dealings with the vendors and the mike announcements.
Some of the lectures were totally over packed.
Signs: Joyce Jenks handled the wonderful new signs
bought this year, and set them out in strategic locations. The
new signs are a major improvement over the old signs in
weight and readability, although we are keeping the two major
artistic signs at the entrance to the school.
Artistic Treasures: Charlotte Toia created a new raffle
with many members donating treasures of various artistic
styles. The most wanted and selected items were the small
quilts: an antique one, a much embellished one and a more
traditional sailboat one. We may have to return to basics.
2011 Raffle: “Our Cape Cod” was a highlight of the Quilt
Show. The marketing efforts of Carol Salerno and Leslie Bird
and publicity by Peggy Bernard were highly successful and
helped promote the entire Quilt Show. The picture on the
website, note cards and tote bags was colorful and detailed.
This was another occasion to promote the vision, design and
skills of our members. Thank you again to all who participated
in designing and creating this wonderful quilt. We’d like to thank
Murray’s for donating a Janome 3160 sewing machine to the
raffle and to Major’s RV for donating the picnic chairs with
attached trays and cup holders.

2011 Raffle, Note Card and Tote Bags
We printed over 7,000 raffle tickets and still had to print
more after Friday’s show. Claude Danner and her committee
made an eye-catching quilt that photographed well and looked
fantastic on Bayberry’s website. Publicity in the local papers
was astounding, with the quilt photo drawing many new
visitors to our show.
This year we were able to “market” the raffle quilt by
lending it out to members who volunteered a few hours of their
time to go to special events at the Yarmouth Cultural Center,
Barnstable Village 4th of July activities, farmers markets, local
restaurants, libraries, grocery stores, garden clubs and Holly
Berry Quilters. One member hung the quilt for two days on her
front porch where streams of people walking to the beach
stopped in their tracks to buy tickets. A big Thank You to: Joan
Andrews, Eva Avery, Peggy Bernard, Cindy Campbell, Carol
Cote, Claude Danner, Roberta Deleo, Shelia Garran, Ellie
Held, Joyce Jenks, Marie MacKay, Barbara Maffeo, Sandy
Marai, Marguerite Martin, Nancy McConnell, Georgia Neydorff,

Sullivan, Christine White and D.J. Zirbel.
We also sold tickets via the website with requests coming
in from places like Colorado and Florida.

Note Cards
We printed 500 note cards with a photo of the raffle quilt
on the front. We started selling the cards at the Thursday
morning show; by 10:30am on Friday morning we were sold
out! A second printing is in the process and should be
available in September in case you did not get a chance to
purchase any.
Tote Bags
The tote bags, with a photo of the raffle quilt on the front,
are made of 100% recycled cotton canvas. They were made in
New Hampshire by an all-female owned and operated
company. There is a huge pocket on the outside with a snap
and an additional smaller pocket on the inside. These bags will
make a great gift for a friend or family member. The bags will
be for sale at the fall guild meetings
National Seashore Challenge
Thanks to all the members who participated in this year’s
challenge - you outdid yourselves! The quilts will be hung at
the Salt Pond Visitors Center at the National Seashore in
Eastham during the month of October. There have been
requests to display the exhibit at other venues, and we will look
into this possibility. Unless you are anxious to have your quilt
returned, I shall keep them for awhile. There were 55 entries in
this exhibit and two more are promised for the event at the
National Seashore.
Thanks to Marie MacKay for donating wooden crates;
they really added a “touch of Cape Cod” to the exhibit.

Kids Can Sew
The first day was slow because there
were few children at the show. Things picked up on
Friday, and Saturday was our busiest day of all.
The children were happy with the sewing process
and so excited when their project produced a pillow. For the
volunteers, and myself, it is simply joyful -- the busier the
better.

Chair, Kids Can Sew
Bayberry in Action
Once again, visitors to the Bayberry in
Action booth were treated to a variety of
techniques which they could “Make and Take”:
fancy thread squares to bead, a demonstration of paper
piecing, disappearing nine-patch and flip and sew. Members,
as well as the public, had a good time learning new techniques
and getting a glimpse into the activities provided by our guild.
Found at Bayberry in Action: A very nice pair of scissors.
Contact Diane for further details.

Houston: Last spring the Houston Quilt Festival
issued a Call for Entries for a Special Exhibit for the upcoming
Houston Int’l Quilt Festival. The Special Exhibit is entitled “Text
on Textiles: Words as Designs on Quilts”. Of the many entries
submitted, only 26 quilts were selected for this exhibit. Three of
the accepted quilts were from Bayberry members. Priscilla
Smith had two quilts accepted: “The Words of War” and “Letters
Home to Mom”. Sandy Gregg had one accepted: “Gentle Rain”.
The exhibit premieres at the Houston Show in November and will
then tour the country for three years at various art gallery and
museum venues.
Vermont: Quilt Festival: Bayberry members continue to win
prizes at the Vermont Quilt Festival. Julie Lariviere won a Blue
Ribbon for her quilt “Through Spenser’s Eyes” in the Pieced Bed
Quilts Category; Carol Salerno won a Red Ribbon for her quilt
“My Celebration of Life II” in the Wall Quilts Category and Cecilia
Maciá won a Yellow Ribbon for her quilt “Viva la vida” in the
Mixed Techniques Category.
The Special Exhibit: “Life’s Work: The Quilts of Marjorie
Lydecker and Her Students” was a huge success. Many Bayberry
members, whose quilts were part of this exhibit, were in
attendance. Marge gave lectures twice a day over the three-day
exhibit period to captive audiences.
Cape Cod: Bayberry members walked away with many
prizes at the Barnstable County Fair held in July. Paula Tuano
won Best in Show and Best in Special Theme Category, “The
Wedding Day", for her Mom's Wedding Dress Quilt. Pat
Farrington won a First Place Blue Ribbon and Best Hand
Quilting Ribbon for her "Christmas Mathematics" Quilt. Mickie
Heath won a Ribbon for Best in the Special Theme Category,
“Still Waters Run Deep,” for her lighthouse quilt. Sue Campbell
won ribbons for a lacy multi-colored shawl, a Cape Cod felted
Carpet Bag, a "Wind and Sea" Hat and a lacy, delicate Rossetti
Shawl jacket. Sue says: “The Fair is a wonderful event....makes
you feel like a kid again in the summer going to the fair to see the
animals, the crafts, and eat the fried dough! I highly recommend
participating in the sewing, quilting and knitting events”.
Well done, all. The versatility displayed by our guild
members is a treat to behold. We look forward to seeing what
honors and ribbons are handed out in the future.
Registration
Many, many thanks to all 30 plus
volunteers who made the quilt registration a
Quilt
smooth and easy process. Thanks to the
Registrations quilt makers for checking in and picking up
their quilts during the allotted times.
See you all next year with your
wonderful quilts.

A special thanks goes to the family and friends of Bayberry
members, too numerous to list here, who volunteered during the
show. They helped fill some gaps and provided extra coverage
when and where it was needed.
Our sincere thanks and gratitude to all the members who
volunteered their time to help at the show, made items for the
boutique, bought raffle tickets and registered their beautiful quilts!
And let us share some of our members, visitors and vendors
feedback:: “a wide reaching show, from beginners to experts, from
hand-quilted to machine-quilted, from traditional to artsy!”,
“Breathtaking display of the National Seashore Challenge!”,
“Friendly and Fun Volunteers!”, “It was a great year!”, “Good food
prices!”, “Lots of vendors!”, “Great Show!”
We Co-Chairs enjoyed an absolutely terrific time and our
common sense of humor helped us respond to all emergencies,
whether small or large, with a smile. We knew we could find a
Bayberry member who could help resolve a problem when we
didn’t have the answer because our guild is made up of “Sew

Reflections on a
"First Ever" Quilt Show
As a now seasoned and jaded exhibitor of a quilt or two, I
must now offer some observations and well meaning advice to
new quilters:
Just Do It - It is exciting to see your quilt exhibited, it looks so
much better than in your basement studio! Trust me, no one
looks that closely, except your harshest critics, and who listens to
them anyway?
Blue, Red, Yellow - Still means First, Second and Third! The
white ribbon saying "First Bed Quilt", simply means you finished
the darn thing, finally!
Bring a Camera - Even if you have a wonderfully expensive
and gloriously complicated one, but it's on a business trip/
vacation with your husband, get yourself a throw away, you won't
regret it. (Or... just pester your friends to photograph for you).
It takes three days (at least two hours each) to see a show.
You need time to chat and visit and relax and shop, or
sometimes, not to shop - because you've slept on it. You really
didn't need that gizmo, anyway!
And finally,
We quilt because we love it.
We show because we are competitive.
And, we always see something we have not seen before and
admire the creativity and ingenuity in someone else.
As always, with humor, Happy Stitches!

Anecdote about Kids Can Sew
My seven year old grand daughter attended the show this
year and at the Kids Can Sew table was asked whether she
wanted to make a four-patch or a nine-patch pillow. "I'll take the
nine." She was so thrilled with her pillow and so inspired by the
quilts she saw that when she got back to my house she told me
she wanted to make a quilt like all the ladies had made. She went
to my stash, chose five fabrics and we spent all this past week
making her first quilt. I did the cutting, but she designed the block
patterns, did all the sewing and will start tying her quilt tomorrow.
It's going to be in next year's show!
Thank you, Estelle, and all your volunteers for making a new
quilter.
Quilt Bank Update
QUILT BANK
Our Big News!..... Through
the work of Pauline Tannock, Fairfield
Batting just donated 16 king-sized
batts. Due to the many requests they
get, they only donate to one
organization each year. We are sending
them a "Thank-You Photo" of our team with a stack of quilts
and a package of batting prominently displayed.
Here is our latest Quilt Bank
story...... when I got food at the show, the
gal at the cash register asked me if we had a
quilt with trucks on it for a three-year old boy
that she has been fostering. He is being
adopted and she wanted to give him a quilt
since he loves trucks. I didn’t have one, but
had a pair of curtains that had trucks and cars all over them,
so I gave them to her for his window. Then I asked Georgia
Buck if she had a truck quilt. She brought one in (she had
appliquéd a truck across the middle). I called the gal (Karen
Kelly) and she came in with two of her daughters, (she has
four), the three-year old and his half-brother, one year old. All
the Quilt Bank gals came out of our room while we presented
Ralph with his truck quilt....we laid it on the floor and he lay
down on it and did (angels in the snow) with his arms and
legs and then wrapped himself in it. He looked like a giant
taco. Peg Parker took a photo and we can hardly wait to see
it. Also, there was a toy truck attached to the back. I got an
email from Georgia saying how great it was to see one of her
quilts received. What a joy to meet a family that does such a
wonderful job. Ralph asked one of the gals if she could make
him a pillow so I gave him a piece of fabric and his 10-year
old sister said she would make him a pillow as she learned
how at "Kids Can Sew" at the show.
The show was great and it was wonderful to see old
friends and make some new ones and thanks to the three
vendors who gave us some fabric. See you at the Tea.

In Memoriam
Ann Mastroiani passed away on August 24,
2011 at the age of 68. She loved animals, was a
dog breeder and a member of the Dalmatian Club
of America and the Briard Club of America.
An artist, she enjoyed creating stained glass and quilting.
She also enjoyed the Cape shellfish beds and her catch of
quahogs and clams.
Quilt Bank volunteers with quilts and batting donated by
Fairfield Batting. Kudos to these dedicated women.

Did you Know?
When you have difficulty with thread feeding through your
sewing machine too quickly or catching as it comes off the
spool, you may need to check how the spool is wound. Some
thread is wound crosswise - it crosses over itself diagonally.
Some thread is stacked - threads are packed right next to
each other but do not cross. Cross-wound thread flows evenly
off the top of the spool, while stacked thread flows evenly off
the side of the spool.
Generally, it’s best to place cross-wound spools on your
horizontal spool pin and stacked spools on your vertical spool
pin. There are exceptions to this rule, so check how your
machine works. If you only have a vertical or horizontal spool
pin, check with your dealer for ways to adapt your machine.
