OUR 2012 PROGRAM
The Marblehead School of Ballet is delighted to offer an expanded Summer
Dance Intensive program for 2013, sponsored in part by the Ruth N. Shiff Memorial
Fund. Regarded as a distinct opportunity for students of dance to cultivate
their technical skills and enrich their understanding and appreciation of the art
form, our program attracts dancers from a large geographic area, national and
international.
During full days of training, students ages 11 and up participate in highly
individualized ballet and modern technique classes, as well as classes in related
disciplines including music theory, nutrition, anatomy, injury prevention, dance
history, and more.
This year MSB is excited to announce our program will offer an optional third week
-- focused on choreography -- which will conclude with a public performance.
Students will also be invited to participate in several excursions to experience
some of the many artistic, cultural, and culinary treasures of Boston’s North Shore.
From July 8-12, MSB will also host our Young Dancer’s Intensive with curriculum
specifically designed for ages 8-12.
Because space is extremely limited, all students are encouraged to apply by
APRIL 10. An application appears at the end of this guide.
I sincerely hope you will consider MSB’s Summer Dance Intensive as a vehicle to
further your skills and truly experience the exhilaration of bringing those skills to a
higher level. Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns as
you apply. I look forward to working with you this summer!
Paula K. Shiff
Director
“I’ve improved my dancing
thanks to Paula Shiff’s advice. I like
the way Paula teaches each student
differently...considering each body,
each student’s possibilities...“

ABOUT MSB: Serving the community for 38 years
In 1971, Paula K. Shiff founded the Marblehead School of Ballet. The unusual
range of her training and experience gives the school a unique approach to
dance education. Rather than adhering to one style of training, MSB draws the
best from many styles. Primary emphasis is always placed on correct alignment,
musicality, and on a graded approach to material so that the dancers extend
their skills in a balanced way, without injury. They are prepared to go on in their
training in many forms of dance. The school also emphasizes the appreciation of
music and the history of dance.
“I got up in the morning and couldn’t wait to go to class...
The Summer Dance Intensive
at MSB opened doors for me
in my dancing.”
– Jennie Edwards of Marblehead, MA
LOCATION: A Coastal New England Summer
Few places offer the cultural richness and sheer beauty of New England in the
summertime. Our region has served as the backdrop and inspiration for countless
artists for hundreds of years. To this day, Marblehead and its neighboring North
Shore towns are where many artists, dancers, authors and historians choose to call
home.
In addition to strolling the many quaint galleries, studios and boutiques in town, in
their free time students may decide to visit the following local treasures:

EXCURSION
This year we are delighted to offer the Summer Intensive
participants the option of joining us to see
3e Étage at Jacob’s Pllow.
When 3e étage made its sold-out U.S. debut at the Pillow
in 2011, audiences fell in love with the company’s sharp
wit, quirky characters, and jaw-dropping dancing.
These dancers, soloists, and étoiles of the legendary
Paris Opera Ballet turn classical ballet on its head
with inventive and clever style. They premiere
Le Pillow Thirteen, commissioned by and created
especially for Jacob’s Pillow by choreographer/director
Samuel Murez.
Jacob’s Pillow Dance, lauded worldwide as a “hub and mecca of dancing”
(TIME Magazine) and “one of America’s most precious cultural assets” (Mikhail
Baryshnikov), is a treasured National Historic Landmark and home to America’s
longest running international dance festival. Each summer, MSB takes a field trip
6 to the breathtaking and tranquil Berkshires to visit “The Pillow.”

“Some dance studios teach only to one student at a time
and others teach to the class as a whole. MSB is unique because
they give students individual corrections depending on their ability
and potential, but the whole class learns why the correction
the teacher gave is so important for dance.”
