THE LOCALITY:
Rhandirmwyn is an old lead mining village in the Upper Towy Valley, with a church, a small general store, and a
traditional village inn, with another pub further along the valley (1½ miles) by the riverside. Lead mining in this
area dates back to Roman times but the industry grew in the 18th and 19th Centuries and the local population was
larger than it is nowadays. Mining ceased in the early 1900s and the region is simply a peaceful haven of
beautiful landscapes with scattered farms and villages, country lanes, and numerous tracks and trails leading
along the riverside or up into the hills through forestry or open moorland – an area loved by walkers, cyclist and
bird enthusiasts. The River Towy is a quarter of a mile from the property westerly along the lane.
Cilycwm village is 3½ miles south-westerly, on the other side of the Towy, with a medieval church, chapel, public
house and primary school. In bygone days, Cilycwm was an overnight resting and watering stop for cattle drovers
as they journeyed with their herds to Llandovery and the English markets.
The Upper Towy Valley near Rhandirmwyn and Cilycwm offers wild and beautiful landscapes, with high
moorland and forested hills with tracks and trails for walking and riding – including Cwm Rhaeadr 1½ miles southwest of the property, a tranquil area of forestry rising from the valley sides of the Towy and its tributaries, with
trails for exploring and delightful waterfalls, being at the foothills of the western flank of Mynydd Mallaen (which
rises to about 1,500 feet at its highest point) – a remote area with deeply cut valleys, numerous streams,
waterfalls, forests and moorland, providing diverse wildlife environments, magnificent scenery, and great hill
walking and riding. The RSPB’s Dinas Nature Reserve is 3 miles north, with ancient oak woodland, pools,
waterfalls, and chances to see a wide variety of birds as well as otters by the river. A couple of miles further on
are the great Llyn Brianne Dam and Reservoir at the headwaters of the Towy, being some 3 miles long. The
summit of Cefn Fannog on the eastern side of the reservoir, south of Tywi Forest, offers spectacular views.
Llandovery is 7 miles south, at the north-western edge of Brecon Beacons National Park. Surrounded by rolling
hills, the town has a good selection of shops, a supermarket, post office, banks, hotels, cafes, restaurants, pubs,
swimming pool, doctor’s and dentist’s practices, small cottage hospital, primary and secondary schools, bus
service, and a railway station on the Heart of Wales line. The High Street is part of the A40. The name
Llandovery means “The Church Amidst The Waters” – since the river Towy is on one side of the valley, the river
Bran is on the other, and the Y Bawddwr meanders through the centre. There are Norman Castle remains, a
Heritage Centre and a famous public school, Llandovery College (where golf is available). Since Llandovery was
once an important centre for cattle drovers travelling to the English markets, the first bank in Wales was
established here – The Bank of the Black Ox in Market Square.

Brecon Beacons National Park is easily accessible from Llandovery, extending over some 520 square miles,
incorporating the Black Mountain massif to the west, the Fforest Fawr, the Central Brecon Beacons, and the
Black Mountains Range to the east. There are Castles at strategic points on the boundaries – at Hay-on-Wye,
Brecon, Trecastle, Tretower, Crickhowell and Carreg Cennen.
Cynghordy village is about 5½ miles south-easterly off the A483 road, with a primary school, church, chapel, and
café & bistro (former public house). Cynghordy’s small railway station (a request stop) is outside the village on
the scenic Heart of Wales country line, which runs from Swansea up to Shrewsbury over 121 miles connecting
charming towns and villages (Swansea provides regular inter-city services to London). Just north of the station is
a major feature of the landscape – the remarkable Cynghordy Viaduct. Built of stone in circa 1871 to carry the
railway line, the viaduct is 93 feet high and 650 feet long, with 18 arches, and gives passengers fabulous views.
Further on, the line passes through Sugar Loaf Tunnel, another local engineering wonder (the middle of the
tunnel is right underneath the Carmarthenshire/Powys boundary line).
Crychan and Halfway Forest is near Cynghordy, offering superb horse riding, carriage driving, mountain biking,
and walking opportunities, as well as providing habitats for a diversity of wild animals and birds, including red
kites, honey buzzards and goshawks.
Llanwrtyd Wells is 12 miles north-east of the property, a charming Victorian spa town on the River Irfon, offering
a selection of individual shops, and being well served with pubs, hotels and restaurants. There is also a tourist
information centre and a red kite centre (the town green features a statue of the bird), and a livestock market near
the Heart of Wales railway station. Llanwrtyd is an eisteddfod site and the locality is host to various annual events
including an agricultural show and sheep dog trials, mountain biking and walking events, and more notably the
World Bog Snorkelling Championships and the Man-versus-Horse Marathon.
Builth Wells is 25 miles to the north-east, a market and spa town nestling on the banks of the River Wye,
famously home to the Royal Welsh Showground.
Llandeilo is 19 miles south-westerly, a charming old market town by the River Towy, with narrow streets,
Georgian buildings, distinctive shops, galleries, pubs, hotels, good restaurants, main post office, health centre,
dentists, and schools. Dinefwr Park and Castle are on the outskirts of town and there are two golf courses some
6 and 9 miles south of Llandeilo.
Lampeter is 20 miles west on the border of Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire, a traditional market town
surrounded by picturesque countryside, where the little river Dulas meets the Teifi river – a rural town, but well
known because of its University of Wales campus on the eastern side.
Brecon is 28½ miles south-easterly, well known for its medieval cathedral and heritage centre, Christ College
public school, Norman castle remains, Georgian architecture, narrow streets, and annual jazz festival.
The A48/M4-link road can be accessed about 28 miles southerly at Cross Hands.
Carmarthen is 32½ miles south-westerly, the ancient county town and commercial centre, with good shopping
amenities, university college, general hospital, and main line railway station.
