GOODELL – The Goodell City
Council is waiting to hear back on a
proposed site northwest of Goodell

site is immediately to the north of the
Goodell city limits.
At the May 4 meeting, Mayor Patrick Sweeny reported he has been in

property. Mayor Sweeney sent Berkland a map of the proposed site and is
waiting to hear from Berkland on how
to proceed.
Former city clerk Dixie Revland will
continue to represent Goodell on the
Wright County Area Landfill Authority board and on the Hancock County
Foundation Board.
Revland’s final day as city clerk is

BRITT —
The Britt City Council discussed the increase of salaries for city
employees during their regular meeting May 4.
It was suggested that the council
consider a three percent across the
board pay increase to all employees.
Councilman Mike Ostercamp suggested that three percent was alright
for some employees but that the city’s
law enforcement officers should receive a four percent pay increase as an
incentive to retain good officers.
“We have three good officers now
and I don’t want to lose them,” said
Ostercamp. “We can’t raise their salary to what the county can afford to
pay but I want them to know we don’t
want to lose them. If this makes them
happy, then it is worth it. If they were
in it for the money then we wouldn’t
keep them regardless.”
“You can never pay good people too
much,” Mayor Marv Hillenega said.
With an across the board salary increase, Deputy Clerk Darcy Eisenman
said that even with years of experience, that still leaves her near the bottom of the pay scale.
“I stay at the bottom because this position is at the bottom,” she said.
Eisenman said the past six months
of transition between clerks and the
resignation of a new clerk/city administrator was particularly difficult.
“I have been doing two jobs,” she
said. “I have done my job and all that
Jeannie has done. I’ve been handling
utility bills, deposits, payroll, pool
payments, and even when we did have
someone I watched him make a mess
of things.”
Newly hired city clerk Michelle Anderson said the city has a great asset
in Eisenman, and would support an
increase in salary.
“I plan to use her a lot, she is a great
resource, a huge asset,” said Anderson. “I plan to use her a lot.”
Hillenega suggested that they did
not have to go by a percentage and
could increase employee salaries by or
to a specific dollar amount. The item
was tabled until the June meeting for
further consideration.
In other business, the council approved beer gardens for the Red
Rooster on June 13, June 20, and Aug
7, 8 and 9 and accepted a sealed bid
in the amount of $50 for an old storm
siren to Jason Jennings to be used in
the Oak Lake neighborhood north of
Algona.
Ostercamp gave an update on the
removal of ash trees on city property,
and said everyone he has consulted
with were OK with taking the trees
down before they become infected
with the Emerald Ash Borer.

House Calls.
Jamie Brantner, PA,
Britt Medical Clinic
Bringing healthcare to you.
Q: Who is at risk for a stroke?
A: Risk factors include people with
certain medical conditions like high
blood pressure, high cholesterol, atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heart
beat), heart disease, obesity and diabetes. There are also behaviors that can
increase the risk of stroke including:
smoking, heavy alcohol use and phys-
ical inactivity. If you have a family
history of stroke, this also increases
your personal risk of stroke.
Q: Do strokes affect people other
than the elderly?
A: Yes, strokes affect people of
younger ages as well as the elderly.
In fact, 25 percent of strokes occur in
people under the age of 65.

On May 1, we reached the 110th
day of the legislative session, which
should have been our last day. Legislators and clerks will no longer be paid,
yet it appears we will have another
week before the session ends.
As budget bills bounce from House
to Senate, it is obvious Democrats are
doing all they can to spend more than
we have. They are attempting to shift
many items off the budget so one-time
money can be used. They are also
counting on significant savings ($66
million) from the process of moving
Medicaid to managed care, and from
an early retirement plan that is not
even written. I would maintain it is
better to support a budget that funds
our priorities and spends money responsibly.
I am sure you have been hearing
about the avian flu affecting poultry
producers across our state. The good
news is it poses no health risk to people. The bad news is more than 20 million birds have been infected and are
being depopulated. That has a huge
impact on the Iowa economy. Wright
County has more laying hens than any
other county in the nation (14-15 million), and the laying facilities employ
about 450 people. That figure does not
include hundreds of jobs in feed, processing and delivery of products. Not
only that, each laying hen eats about
one bushel of corn in a year. As of Thursday, Wright and Kossuth
counties each had two sites infected.
I have been in frequent contact with
county supervisors in Wright County
as well as with the Secretary of Agriculture, DNR, Homeland Security,
and a host of others. Producers in this
district have been very proactive, and
I am convinced whatever can be done
to stop the spread of the avian flu has
been done. The big questions are,
“How many birds will be destroyed?”
and “How long will it be before those
sites can be repopulated?” This will affect us locally and as a state for a long
time to come.
On Sunday, I attended a benefit
for Jerry Tweeten, who passed away
on Tuesday. I knew Jerry mainly as
the Winnebago County Republican
chair. He will be missed by many in
the community of Forest City where
he also worked at Bill’s Family Food.
Jerry was 58 years old and died from
complications resulting from a fall and
blow to the head. Jerry loved people
and was involved in numerous community organizations. It impressed
me how humble he stayed even when
meeting many famous politicians who
wanted his endorsement. Jerry did
so many good things, yet he knew it
wasn’t because of these good works
he would be spending life in eternity with God. Jerry knew Jesus, his
savior. Jerry’s passing is a reminder
to all of us that none of us are guaranteed tomorrow. However God tells
us, “The witness is this that God has
given us eternal life and this life is in
His Son. He who has the Son has the
life; he who does not have the Son of
God does not have the life.” 1 John

Under the Golden Dome Too
By State Representative Linda Upmeyer

April showers have continued into
the month of May. Despite the scattered rain, I hope you have been able
to find some time to enjoy the warmer
temperatures and new greenery that is
springing up across our state
This week, the House passed legislation that strengthens Iowa’s middle class and helps retain and attract
young families.
HF 631 will help Iowans interested
in purchasing their first home, save
money in order to do so. The bill establishes a new homebuyers savings
account that will help first-time homebuyers save money for a down payment.
HF 631 allows first-time homebuyers to set up a savings account in order
to finance the purchase of a home and
allows them to deduct a portion of that
savings, $3000 per person or $6000
per married couple, from their state
income taxes for up to 10 years. If the
funds are used for any purpose other
than the purchase of a home, the account holder is subject to a penalty
By providing an incentive for saving,
HF 631 will increase home ownership
in our state, reduce foreclosures, and
increase financial security for Iowa
families. We know that when families
buy homes or they make purchases for
their homes, this benefits our economy. They also grow deeper roots in,
and engage more fully in our communities. That’s good for Iowa. The bill
passed the House with overwhelming
bipartisan support and has been sent to
the Senate for their consideration
We also passed a bill that will help
extend access to high-speed data in all
areas of our state. By facilitating the
construction of cell towers throughout
the state, HF 655 will help streamline
the process to install the infrastructure
needed for high-speed wireless networks
Internet connectivity and the opportunities that come with it, is one of
the most transformative advances of
our lifetime. Having reliable access to
high-speed Internet is critical to economic development. By enabling the
build-out of infrastructure necessary
for access to high-speed Internet, this
bill will play an integral role in connecting every Iowan to this powerful
tool.
If ensuring reliable connectivity to
every Iowan is going to be a reality,
wireless access is going to be necessary to get that done. With so many
advances being made in the field of
technology, I’m more confident than
ever we can achieve this goal. HF 655
passed the House with bi-partisan support. It has now been sent to the Senate, where I am hopeful it will soon be
considered.
I always appreciate hearing your
thoughts and feedback. If you have
any questions, comments, or would

The Fallen Shows of 2015
This year’s television season is coming to an end and many new shows
will be ending with it. So once again,
let’s have a rundown of some of the
shows that had their chance, but didn’t
make the cut for next season.
Backstrom
Rainn Wilson played a misanthropic detective that doesn’t play by the
book, has an abusive relationship with
his underlings, and is romantically involved with his immediate supervisor.
Essentially, it was a police procedural version of “House.”
Which is fine. I liked “House” and
I liked this. But apparently I was one
of the few because this mid-season replacement didn’t catch on.
Which is also fine. The show wasn’t
bad, but it wasn’t great. I enjoyed
watching it with my roommate, but
won’t be shedding any tears over it.
Constantine
“Constantine” had a rough start.
Even before the first episode aired the
show underwent a major change in recasting one of its three primary characters.
This adaptation of the “Hellblazer”
comic came out of the gate out a little too clean for its own good with a
chain-smoker that couldn’t smoke and
watered down stories that didn’t match
the grit of their source material.
To their credit, showrunner Daniel Cerone adapted to early criticism
beautifully. By the end of the season
Constantine had found his cigarettes
and the stories became significantly
darker. Unfortunately, it was too little
too late.
NBC may have passed on a second
season of the show, but there’s a strong
push to see it continue on another network. If it’s going to survive, Cerone
is going to have to be as good at last
minute miracles as his show’s lead
character.
Forever
In spite of a lack of beheadings, this
show about a crime solving medical
examiner that happens to be immortal
turned out to be pretty good.
Granted, TV isn’t lacking in British
super-sleuths at the moment, but this
one was my current favorite. As a police procedural it was nothing special,
but the way the show dealt with the
main character’s immortality made for
some really interesting stories.
That and I’m a sucker for any show
with an unconventional family dynamic, and watching 41-year old Ioan
Gruffudd play father to 80-year old
Judd Hirsch definitely falls under that
description.
Gracepoint
Unlike most police procedurals,
“Gracepoint” took the refreshing approach of dedicating its entire season
to watching David Tennant solve a
single murder mystery. This lead to a
lot of cliffhangers that made it really hard to wait for the next episode.
Fortunately for the fictional people of
Gracepoint, it looks like there won’t be
anymore murders to solve as the show
wasn’t picked up for another season.
But don’t despair, while “Gracepoint” may have been canned, you can
still see Tennant on “Broadchurch,”
the UK show it was based on, will
continue.
One Big Happy
I really wanted to like this show.
Again, I’m a sucker for unconventional families and this one… very unconventional. Elisha Cuthbert played
a gay woman having a baby with her
male best friend, but their plan gets
complicated when the friend elopes
with another woman.
That’s a heck of a premise, but the
execution left so much to be desired
it was almost embarrassing to watch.
Every week I wondered why I should
keep watching. Thankfully, NBC canceled the show after six episodes so I
don’t have to wonder anymore.
Selfie
On the other hand, “Selfie” is a comedy I’m actually going to miss.
A modern retelling of “My Fair
Lady,” the show was smart, funny, and
designed to appeal to a generation that
has better things to do on a Tuesday
night than watch television.
Poor ratings on ABC got the show
pulled after seven episodes. The remaining five episodes were released
on Hulu, which is probably where the
show should have been from the start.
“Selfie” was probably intended to
draw the Millennials back to scheduled television, but instead it seems to
be a sign that the days of watching TV
on somebody else’s schedule are coming to an end.
Travis Fischer is a news writer for
Mid-America Publishing and still
watches too much TV.
End of the season in sight
The end of this session might be in
sight. You can feel it in the air. There
are still political jabs thrown back and
forth when cameras or microphones
are on, but both sides seem ready to
work together and find a way to end
this session.
There are still several important
bills and the budget on the table. Of
personal importance are the omnibus
gun bill and the ultrasound bill that the
Senate has not moved on for weeks. I
would like to see at least one, if not
both, of these historic bills passed this
session. My freshman feel is that the
omnibus gun bill might still have a
chance and the ultrasound bill still has
a faint heartbeat.
Both sides are finally beginning to
acknowledge that the Iowa economy is in a very real slump. The rapid
spread of the avian influenza the past
few weeks through the turkey and
poultry industry has left a deep and
solemn shadow over the statehouse.
There is no way to calculate the fiscal
impact this will have on our economy
moving forward.
I have met two times with our
Wright County Response Team and
remain in daily contact for briefings.
They took the initiative to launch proactive measures in declaring a state of
emergency, initiating road closures,
spraying vehicles with disinfectants and even preventative spraying
around egg production facilities. The
State of Iowa is now looking to Wright
County for leadership and innovation
in this battle. This week, the House of
Representatives passed a unanimous
amendment to dedicate new funds to
support research into this infestation.
House Happenings

How it is spreading is still a mystery.
House Republicans remain firm on
their budgeting principles. We are
committed to the 1.25% for supplemental school aid, but may be willing
to dip into the reserve for additional
one time funding so long as it is not
added to the bottom line for ongoing
spending. We refuse to spend more
revenue than the state takes in and
will not dip into the reserve to fund
ongoing expenses. Any compromise
for the 2016 budget must not be added
beyond the 1.25% as the new starting
point for the 2017 budget year and beyond. Many government departments
are experiencing freezes or cuts for
the 2016 budget. This is a very tight
year.
Let me be clear, there is no settlement, but this might be the middle
ground that allows the governor’s office, the democrat controlled Senate
and the republican controlled House
to come together and resolve the budget crisis without jeopardizing future
budgets if we experience another
revenue shortfall in 2015 as we did
in 2014. It may sound like a trivial
point, but this may be the solution to
the budget impasse, preserve fiscal
caution, increase school funding and
prevent across the board cuts in the
near future if the agriculture economy
in Iowa continues to falter. With the legislative session in its
waning days (hopefully), I am also
turning my attention to other leadership opportunities. One of those
opportunities is a volunteer position
on the statewide leadership team of
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s political action committee, Our American
Revival.
While he will not make a decision
or official announcement about the
2016 presidential election until his
state completes its budget work next
month, Governor Walker is leading a
national conversation about ways to
make government more efficient and
effective through reforms that will
take control from the federal government and big government special interests and give it back to hard-working taxpayers.
My role with OAR will also continue my work connection with Rachel
Link, who served as my clerk during
the session. (Funding for clerks ran
out on May 1, which means senators
and representatives will be handling
their own clerical duties until adjournment, but Rachel will be active with
OAR along with her boss, Eric Woolson, and I look forward to working
with both of them to spread the message that government can and must
work better.

Hancock 4-H Hosts Act It!
Workshop with Waldorf College
Fifteen 4-H members toured back
stage and tried their hand at acting at
the Smith Theater at Waldorf College
on April 21. “4-H is all about trying
new things, learning new skills, and
discovering your passion.” says Victoria Schmidt, Hancock County 4-H
Youth Coordinator. “The Waldorf College Theater department did a fantastic
job of showing 4-Hers all the different
aspects of theater and making it exciting.”
At the workshop, 4-Hers toured
behind the scenes of a theater production, learning about building sets,
matching props and clothing with the
era of the production, watching how
zombie make-up is applied, and trying
their hand at acting games. The students at Waldorf College led the entire
evening.
“I had so much fun! If they have it
next year, I would go again. There was
a lot to see, and there is a lot to do to
put on a show. It’s awesome! I hope I
get to be in plays and musicals when I
get a little older!” said 10 year old 4-H
participant Morgan Krein from Garner. 4-H parent Pam Roberts is glad
learning opportunities like this are
offered by 4-H because she says, “It
opens their eyes to opportunities they
don’t think about or see. It broadens
[my daughter]’s horizons.” Roberts
said this particular experience taught
her daughter the benefits of a local college. When asked about her daughter,
Paige’s, reaction to the Act It! Workshop, Roberts said, “She was surprised
by all the different facets of theater.
She was especially excited about the
improvisation and make-up sessions.”
The Act It! Workshop was part of
Hancock 4-H’s monthly exploration
workshops, trips, and tours that are
offered to allow kids to have handson learning opportunities. Hancock
County Extension is offering more
than 17 workshops, camps, and tours
this summer for youth to experience.

CWL School Celebrates in Concert
The last Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne
Middle School/High School Spring

not disappoint. The crowd present not
only showed the student body that the
community supported their efforts but
that our small school has always been

performing “We, the Children of
America” by Sandy Feldstein.
The faculty, staff and school board
of the Corwith-Wesley district were
recognized by those in attendance.
There was a cake, coffee and lemonade reception for all to enjoy following the concert in honor of those
recognized.
In the cafeteria the public was also
given an opportunity to view a gallery
of artwork by Eller Shipman’s art students. Some of the projects had been
in progress since the last concert.

even in his time spent in the West View Care Facility.
Bob was ardent sports fan and loved to watch his Hawkeyes and baseball
on T.V. For many years he enjoyed the companionship and journeys of life
with his special friend Jean Weber until her passing a few years ago. He
loved outlaw country and gospel music sung by Waylon, Johnny, and Elvis.
He will be remembered by those who had the opportunity to cross in his
footsteps as a character in so many ways.

Peter Ray Van Gerpen
Peter Ray (“Pete”) Van Gerpen, 82, of Garner, formerly of Rake, died

after a long battle with rheumatoid arthritis and acute myeloid leukemia.
Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m.

Private inurnment will be held at a
later date.
Peter Ray Van Gerpen was born
February 2, 1933 in rural Buffalo Center, Iowa, the son of Henry and Alice
(Burma) Van Gerpen. He was baptized
1933 - 2015
and confirmed at the First Reformed
Services Held:
Church in Buffalo Center.
Tuesday, May 5 at 11 a.m.
Pete’s early education began in the
Immanuel Lutheran Church
country school near his home and later

continued in Buffalo Center, where he

graduated in 1951. During his senior Cataldo-Schott Funeral Home
year his family moved to a farm near
Rake. Six weeks later he met a girl, a freshman at Rake High School, named
Lou Ann Russ. Thus began a romance that continued for 64 years. Having
helped his father on the farm since his early youth, he decided that farming
was the career he wanted to follow.
On July 17, 1955 he and Lou Ann were married at the Liberty Lutheran
Church in Rake. They made their home on a farm 1 mile east of Rake, where
they raised their 4 children, milked a herd of 35 cows, and enjoyed their life
together. They became active members of Zion Lutheran Church where Pete
at one time served as congregational president. They enjoyed attending all of
their children’s school activities, and in later years those of their grandchildren.
They also enjoyed traveling, eventually visiting all 50 states and taking a
trip to Germany where they visited the childhood home of Pete’s father and
spent time with some of his relatives.
They also had fun cruising the Caribbean and Alaskan waters and boating
with their family on Clear Lake.
In 1990 Pete was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. He continued to
farm as long as he could, but eventually had to cut down on the number of
acres he farmed. They decided in 2007 it was time to leave their home of
over 50 years and to move somewhere close to one of their children, since
Pete was becoming more and more disabled. They purchased a home in Garner and learned to love their new community. They enjoyed attending their
grandchildren’s activities, and made many new friends in that way. They
became members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.
In late 2014 Pete was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. He fought
this disease bravely, but as complications set in he gradually became weaker
and on May 1st he left us for the arms of God.
Pete is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Lou Ann; his children; Lori
(David) Stanley of Decorah, Iowa, Michael (Stephanie) of Cottage Grove,
Minn.; Mary Jo (Todd) Horner of Logansport, Ind.; and Paul (Traci) of Garner; seven grandchildren, Nichole (John) Miller of Newburgh, Ind., Kimberly Horner of Northfield, Minn., Kaleb and Lauren Van Gerpen of Cottage
Grove, and Alexander, Tiara, and Mackenzie Van Gerpen of Garner; two
sisters, Elaine Boehm of Buffalo Center and Lila Hassebrock of Des Moines;
a brother, Arnold (Julienne) of Lake Mills; one sister-in-law, Irene Russ of
Crystal, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Henry and Alice Van Gerpen; his
grandparents; a brother Harold, who died at the age of 2 ½; his parents-inlaw, Odin and Lillian Johnson; several brothers-in-law, and one sister-in-law.
He will be greatly missed and remembered as a kind, honest, gentle man
who was very much loved.
Memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church in Rake or Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Forest City. Arrangements were with Cataldo Schott Funeral Home. Online condolences for the family can be sent to www.cataldoschottfh.com

conversation and telling stories. Following his birth (the youngest of five
Peck siblings) at Mason City’s Mercy
Hospital on Jan. 7, 1933, to Henry and
Elizabeth Peck of Garner, John Henry was an active participant in many
school activities and dated the girl
next door, Corinne Koolbeck, a fellow classmate and 1950 graduate of
Garner High School. The eventual union on Sept. 7, 1952, at the United
Presbyterian Church in Garner was a fait accompli by designated character
roles—Joseph and Mary in the Nativity scene and, in the junior class play,
husband and wife. After receiving his lieutenant bars upon ROTC completion, John Henry served in the Army at Fort Belvoir, Va., during the Korean
War.
A peripatetic professional career ensued: highway engineer at the Iowa Department of Transportation in Ames and minister at Presbyterian churches
large and small in Nebraska (North Platte and Falls City) and Ohio (Lancaster). Leading youth groups on adventures in life and travel was a favorite ministry, venturing to destinations from the inner city of Chicago to the
Boundary Waters in Canada to the sands of the Sahara. His family joined him
in war-torn Egypt during a 1969–70 call to serve two Christian churches in
Cairo.
His penchant for helping others continued with a mid-life career change to
Fort Collins in 1982, where John Henry worked with social services agencies, including the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). He shared his
wisdom and life lessons as an unofficial life counselor and mentor for people
in all walks of life. The Rocky Mountains held a special appeal to sate his
lifelong appetite for the great outdoors and its accoutrements—hiking, biking, canoeing and campfires.
Retiring at early 62, John Henry was busier than ever planning discussion groups, canoe trips, camping trips, retreats, family reunions and more.
He read voraciously, acquired books even more voraciously and made the
rounds of his favorite haunts—coffee cup, reading material and canine companion, Charlie, in tow. While appreciating beauty in the poetry of others,
John Henry was a published poet in his own right, penning a compendium
of verse, Thoughts Out of Solitude. He was an active member of Plymouth
Congregational United Church of Christ in Fort Collins.
In addition to his wife, Corinne, John Henry is survived by daughters
Deborah (Dr. John Johnson) of Portage, Mich., and Katherine of Denver;
son Steven (Mary) of Broomfield, Colo.; grandchildren Michael and Rachel
Peck Johnson, Timothy Peck, and Marguerite and Spencer Peck; two sisters,
Marilyn Bentley of Wichita, Kan., and Virginia Thomson (James) of Waukon, Iowa; brother-in-law Richard (Marjorie) Koolbeck of Cedar Rapids,
Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. Upon interment, John Henry will join
his parents, brother Lowell Peck, and parents-in-law, Jake and Elsie Koolbeck, in Concord Cemetery. His eldest sibling, Donald Peck, also precedes
him in death.
Memorials have been established to the Plymouth Congregational UCC
and Poudre River Public Library District in Fort Collins, Colo.

GHV Soccer Girls
Fall at A-P
With only one match scheduled last
week, the GHV girls’ soccer team was
hoping to pull off an upset in Thursday’s match against Aplington-Parkersburg. Unfortunately, the Falcons
proved to be too much for the Cards,
outscoring their hosts 7 – 0.
GHV had trouble mounting scoring
threats against A-P, but Emily Spilman
was able to take three shots on goal.
Sydney Childress and Tiara Van Gerpen were both credited with two shots
on goal. GHV’s goalies were kept
busy with Sam Betz recording seven
saves and Morgan Westendorf adding
four.
Super
Cardinal coach Josh Banse commented, “Aplington is a great team
and I’m not disappointed with the
loss. We had some very positive things
come from this game despite the score.
The girls are really starting to click as
a team. A-P is just so good that it appears we had a bad game. It will be interesting this next week with the return
of Hannah au from injury and an entire
week of practice to get ready to make a
push at the end of the season.”
The Cardinals are now 6 – 5 overall
and will be off this week, returning to
action at Webster City on May 18.

GHV Boys Top Osage
Fresh off of their tournament
championship at West Hancock, the
GHV boys’ golf team added another win to their record last week. The
Cardinals posted an easy win on
their home course, topping Osage
167 – 184.
Grady Umbarger fired a medalist
round 37 to lead GHV to the win.
Matt Heinemann followed with a 42
while Braeden Johnston carded a 43.
Jordan Babcock and Ryan Grunwald
each finished with 45’s to complete
the team total. Also on the varsity
roster for the Cards was Alek Goll
with a 50.
Cardinal coach Ken Krause commented, “Grady is playing excellent
golf shooting his third straight 37.
Grady is all about hard work and getting better. Tis can be said about all of
the players, varsity and JV alike.”
Krause noted that he has a number of players competing for spots
on the varsity roster. “Matt is one
of the most solid freshmen that we
have had in a number of years. Senior Braeden Johnston has scored
between 40 and 44 in seven of his
last eight meets.”
The Cardinals are now 15 – 6
overall and will host the North Iowa
Conference tournament on Monday,
May 11. GHV will then travel to Fort
Dodge on Friday to play in the Class
2A sectional tournament.

GHV Girls Prepare
for NIC Golf
With the North Iowa Conference
golf tournament scheduled for May
11, the GHV girls squad spent last
week preparing for what is expected
to be another competitive tourney.
The Cards hosted one of the NIC’s
best teams on Monday as Osage visited the Garner Golf Course. GHV
then traveled to Spring Valley on
Thursday for a triangular meet with
Bishop Garrigan and Humboldt.
Osage has been recording some
impressive scores recently, but
the Cardinals were able to outscore their guests 198 – 218. Bailee Frayne earned medalist honors
with a 47 with Madee Hejna and
Kyleigh Slaichert right on her heels
with 48 and 49. Rachel Enright and
Elly Johnston followed with rounds
of 54 and Paige Penning carded a
non-scoring 66.
Cardinal coach Todd Greiman
commented, “Facing Osage prior to
the conference tournament was good
experience for us since they will be
one of the favorites. Our team score
was very good, but the girls have set
the bar so high that they were a little disappointed with their numbers.
They’ll continue to work toward improvement.”
The Cardinals traveled to Spring
Valley Golf Course on Thursday
hoping to play all 18 holes in preparation for the conference tourney.
Rain and threatening weather put a
damper on those plans but GHV was
able to complete a nine-hole meet
against Humboldt and Garrigan.

and Kyleigh Slaichert with 51 and
52. Elly Johnston’s 60 completed the
team total. Rachel Enright and Paige
Penning carded non-scoring rounds
of 63 and 65 for the Cards.
“We knew from the beginning that
we’d have a tough time beating a
strong team like Humboldt,” noted Greiman. “I also had my doubts
about beating Garrigan on their
home course but we finished a lot
closer than I anticipated. This match
was not about winning but more
about getting experience on the conference tourney course. I’m hoping
that playing this meet will give us
the knowledge we need to score well
when it counts.”
The Cardinals are now 13 – 5 overall and will compete in the NIC tournament at Spring Valley on Monday.

Cardinal Boys Win Coed Relays
For the second week in a row, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys’ track team
earned a team title on their home field.
The Cards used a strong team effort to
pull away from the field in their Coed
Relays held last Monday. The Cards
then traveled to Algona on Thursday to
compete in a four-team event hosted by
Bishop Garrigan.
GHV scored double points in several
events on the way to the team championship at Garner. The Cards finished
the night with 122 points compared
to runner up Clear Lake’s 105. Forest
City and Osage were a distant third and
fourth with 90 and 78 points respectively.
Sam Cataldo was a double winner
for the Cardinals, earning first place
points in the 110-meter and 400-meter
hurdle races. Also winning gold medals
for GHV were Ezra Marroquin in the
400-meter dash, Logan Dalbeck in the
1600-meter run and Chase Smith in the
3200-meter run.
GHV finished the night with three
silver medal winners as Marroquin was
runner-up in the 200-meter dash, Derek
Brown placed second in the 1600-meter run and Johnny O’Connor finished
second in the 800-meter run. Connor
Shaw added third place points in the
400-meter hurdles.
In relay action, the Cards earned
a second place finish while scoring
third-place points in four other relays.
The shuttle hurdle foursome of Conner Shaw, David Cook, JJ Loschen
and Sam Cataldo placed second in
that race. Marroquin, Kevin Boehnke,
Cook and Loschen teamed together
to place third in the 400-meter relay
while Logan Dalbeck joined Boehnke,
Loschen and Marroquin to place third
in the medley relay. Dalbeck, Brown,
O’Connor and Ray Cataldo won third
place medals in the 3200-meter relay
and Nich Mehmen, Harley Forry, Cook
and Cataldo scored third place points in
the 1600-meter relay.

Cardinal Girls Host Coed Relays
With the track season rapidly approaching the biggest events of the
year, the GHV girls’ squad competed in
two track meets last week. The Cardinals hosted their Coed Relays on Monday and then ran in Clear Lake’s Jim
Ahrens relays.
Forest City simply outclassed the remainder of the field at Monday’s Coed
event. The Indians won the team title
with 160 points, well ahead of runner up Hampton-Dumont’s 84 points.
GHV finished the night with 35 points
to finish sixth overall.
Taylor Vossberg was GHV’s top individual place winner as the Cardinal
senior won the silver medal in the high
jump. Rebekah Larson finished third
in the 3000-meter run. GHV’s top relay performance was the shuttle hurdle
foursome of Miranda Jackson, Jillian
Heitlan, Brooklynn Ossman and Stacy
Hackenmiller with a second place effort.
A strong field of teams combined
with a shortened list of events led to
few medals for the Cardinals at Clear
Lake on Thursday. The meet was called
early due to lightning in the area with
GHV sitting in seventh place with 40
team points.
Taylor Vossberg continued to score
in the high jump, placing second in that
event. The shuttle hurdle team of Miranda Jackson, Jillian Heitland, Brooklyn Ossman and Stacy Hackenmiller
also won second place medals.
Cardinal coach Dyan Childress commented, “Next week we head into the
biggest week of the season. The girls
are excited to go all out and see what we
can do at conference and districts. They
continue to stay focused and have been
breaking their personal and season’s
best performances.”
GHV will travel to Belmond on
Monday for the North Iowa Conference track meet followed by a trip to
Osage on Thursday for the Class 2A
state-qualifying meet.
Complete results from last week’s
track meets follow.

Mentoring coordinator
The One On One Mentoring project received a grant from Farm Credit Services of America to help our
community youth learn the value of
growing their own fresh garden produce. In partnership with the Garner
Greenhouse and Prairie View apartments the mentoring program has
held four classes of instruction with
the last class planting part of their
garden products at Prairie View.
The first class held the youth
learned about the different types of
dirt/soil used to starts seeds in a nursery environment. Each person planted tomatoes, peppers and cilantro.
During the second session the group
learned different growing processes,
from experimenting to grow a radish in a one inch starter cube which
comes in 50 count plats to using biodegradable pots received from Iowa
State University. Additionally, the
mentors and mentees learned the different fertilizer for growing different
types of plants. We finished the session planting Brussel sprouts, chives
and basil.
The third session found the adults
and youth transplanting all the plants
from one in growing cells to four in
inch pots. The group also planted
some geraniums and devils tongue,
which they took home for transplanting when the plants got larger.

CARDINAL
CHRONICLE
Autumn Prehn
Kaden Young
Megan Finley
Going on a cruise with her mom, aunt and cousin is Autumn Prehn’s favorite childhood memory. Autumn was born on Oct. 27, 1996, and is the
daughter of Robin and Doug Hamrick and Mike Prehn. Autumn has two
siblings, Jordan and Addison, and one
dog named Mia.
Autumn has many favorites including listening to country music, celebrating the Fourth of July, cheering
on the Hawkeyes, eating Reese’s, the
color blue, watermelon, cookies and
cream ice cream, cheerleading and the
high school course textiles. Autumn’s
dream vacation is to go to Europe, and
the number one thing on her bucket
list is to go skydiving.
Dancing, cheering, playing soccer,
crocheting and sewing are Autumn’s
hobbies. If Autumn could win a lifetime supply of something, she would
want money. Senior sweep is Autumn’s favorite homecoming memory. Her favorite high school memories
are scoring the first goal in Garner
girls soccer and cheering at state wrestling.
Autumn’s advice to underclassmen is to use your time wisely. A high
school achievement of which Autumn is most proud is taking the health hub.
She is most looking forward to meeting new people after high school, and
her dream job is to be a pediatric nurse.
While in high school Autumn has been involved in volleyball, basketball,
track, FFA, football cheerleading, wrestling cheerleading, competition cheerleading, soccer and chorus. After high school Autumn plans to Kirkwood and
then transfer to Iowa for nursing.
Kaden Young’s favorite childhood memory is riding in the combine with
his grandpa. Kaden, born on Jan 29, 1997, is the son of Todd and Andrea
Young. Kaden has a little sister named Karlee, and he also has a dog, Sparkee.
Kaden has many favorites that include the book Eragon, The Walking
Dead, The Lord of The Rings: Return
of The King, rock music, the color
blue, celebrating Christmas, eating
oranges and mint chocolate chip ice
cream, taking ag in high school and
trapshooting.
The number one thing on Kaden’s
bucket list is to hunt an elephant, and
his dream vacation is to go to Alaska.
Kaden’s nervous habit is tapping his
leg, and his biggest pet peeve is when
people don’t close their mouths when
they chew their food. If Kaden could
be an animal, he would be a peregrine
falcon because he could do whatever
he wanted whenever he wanted and
would not have to worry about anything. Hunting, fishing, reading and trapshooting are Kaden’s hobbies. If he
could win a lifetime supply of anything, he would want shotgun shells.
Working on the school house is Kaden’s favorite high school memory, and
lettering in trapshooting is the high school achievement of which Kaden is
most proud. Trapshooting and FFA are the activities he has been involved
in during high school. “Do your homework” is the advice Kaden gives to
underclassmen. After high school Kaden is looking forward to not being in
school. His future plans are to attend NIACC.
The number one thing on Megan Finley’s bucket list is to not be 5 feet, ¾
inch tall. Meg is the daughter of Jeff and Tina Finley and has a brother, Todd.
Meg’s pets include her beagle, Daisy; bunny, Smokey; hamster, Rufus, and
cats, Tiger and Chloe. She was born
on Oct. 16, 1996.
Meg’s favorites include The Fault in
Our Stars, Orange Is the New Black,
White Chicks, country and pop music,
celebrity Christian Gray, the Fourth
of July, the UNI Panthers, beef jerky,
Rock Revival, the colors teal and gray,
Hu Hot, kiwi, strawberry cheesecake
dip ‘n dots, the high school courses
woods with Mr. Short and agriculture
with Mr. B., Instagram, Snapchat, the
quote “Hakuna matata, it means no
worries for the rest of your days” and
her birthday present of her first horse,
Jacky. Meg’s hobbies are riding horses, snowmobiling, crafting, camping,
boating and hanging out with friends.
She always enjoys watching wrestling
and playing volleyball.
Two fun facts about Meg are that she can burp like a man and she drives an
orange Kia Soul. Megan’s nervous habit is biting her nails, and her biggest
pet peeve is unorganized things, especially dirty rooms. If Meg could be an
animal, she would be a chimpanzee because “running around beating on my
chest sounds like a great time.” Meg would love to win a lifetime supply of
cash, and her dream vacation is to go to the Bahamas.
If Meg could walk in someone else’s shoes for a day, she would walk in her
brother’s because she would like to know how he always get away with his
shenanigans, and her role model is Mrs. Penning because “she always told
me that I had to be a teacher when I grew up.”
Meg’s favorite homecoming memory is the “senior sweep,” and her favorite high school memory is running track with Mikah her freshman year and
having to run the 400 at a meet.
The best advice Meg has been given this year is a combination of advice
from Joe Dirt and Mallory Johnson: “Life’s a garden, deal with it.” Meg’s
advice to underclassmen is “Procrastination is the key to success.”
During high school Meg has been involved in volleyball, basketball, track,
football cheerleading, basketball cheerleading, competition cheerleading,
drama, vocal, honor choir, FFA, FCCLA, variety show and yearbook staff/
editor.
After high school Meg is most looking forward to living on her own and
meeting new people in college. Her plans after high school are to attend the
University of Northern Iowa to study pre-pharmacy. Her dream job, however, is to be a Kardashian because they get paid to be drama queens.
Melody Seaman
by Sara Hoover
Melody Seaman’s hobbies include drawing and reading. Melody was born
April 16, 1997, to Monique. She has a brother, Brandon, and a sister, Melissa, as well as Sonny the cat and Theo the dog. Melody’s role model is her
brother Brandon because he has been
there for her and has taught her a lot
of lessons about life. She would like
to walk in her mom’s shoes, though,
because she would like to understand
the struggles of being a mother.
Melody’s favorites include the Divergent series, the TV show Adventure Time, the movie How to Train
Your Dragon, dubstep and alterative
rock music, chocolate, the color red,
a Wacom drawing tablet she received
for her birthday, strawberries, vanilla
ice cream and creative drawing. She
believes she looks most like Chuck
Norris.
The number one thing on Melody’s
bucket list is to explore the world,
especially Japan; a trip there is her
dream vacation. Her biggest pet peeve
is when one string on a hoodie is longer than the other. If Melody could be
any animal, she would be a llama because sometimes she can hear the llama
lords speaking to her. Melody would like to win a lifetime supply of Anime.
Melody’s favorite high school memory is meeting Nate, and her favorite
homecoming memory is going to the dance for the first time with Nate. The
high school achievement Melody is most proud of is getting on the B honor
roll. She has been involved in choir while in high school.
“Try not to give up!” is the best advice Melody has been given this year
while her advice to underclassmen is “Enjoy school while it lasts because
soon you, too, will be out in the real world, starting new things.” Melody is
most looking forward to starting a life in Wisconsin with Nate.
Melody’s future plans are to be an artist and get a degree in the medical
field. Melody’s dream job is to help as many people as possible, so she can
make people both old and young smile.
Sydney Younge
by Riannan Kadrlik
Sydney Younge’s favorite childhood memory is going to Disney World.
Sydney was born on Oct. 8, 1997. Her parents are Marcus and Robin Younge,
and her sister is Courtney Younge. Sydney also has a beagle named Milley.
Sydney enjoys reading Cosmo and
Vogue, watching Grey’s Anatomy
and Scandal, cheering for the Nebraska volleyball team and eating Kit
Kits, strawberries and black raspberry ice cream. Some more of her favorites include Adidas, Northwestern
Steak House and volleyball. Her biggest pet peeve is people that breathe
really loud.
Beyoncé is Sydney’s role model,
favorite celebrity and the person in
whose shoes she would walk a day
in because Beyoncé is Beyoncé. Sydney’s dream vacation is to go to Brazil.
Teepeeing in Ventura is Sydney’s
favorite homecoming memory, and
her favorite high school memory is
beating Forest City in volleyball in
districts. Throughout high school Sydney has been involved in volleyball,
basketball, FFA, RAOC and FCCLA. The best advice Sydney has received
and her advice to underclassmen is take calculus pass/fail.
Sydney is most looking for to not being in high school after high school,
and her future plans are to go to the University of Northern Iowa.

Mikah’s Final Musing
by Mikah Millard
With the final days of high school
coming to a close, it’s hard not to
reminisce on the times we’ve had
throughout our years as students.
I just recently received a package
from my former kindergarten teacher
with a book titled All I Really Need
To Know I Learned In Kindergarten
with sections she had highlighted
that she thought were important.
The book, by Robert Fulghum, had
eleven things that most people could
take from kindergarten and apply to
their lives after school; share everything, play fair, don’t hit people, put
things back where you found them,
clean up your own mess, don’t take
things that aren’t yours, say sorry
when you hurt somebody, wash your
hands before you eat, flush, warm
cookies and cold milk are good for
you, live a balanced life – learn some
and think some and draw and paint
and sing some, take a nap every afternoon, watch for traffic, be aware
of wonder, goldfish and mice and
seeds in Styrofoam cups all die – so
will we, and finally, remember one
of the first words you learned to read
– look.
These are all lessons we learned
as kindergartners and all lessons we
can take with us as we finally go out
into the world. It’s tough coming to
the realization that the people I spent
years growing, sharing and learning
with will no longer be sitting across
form me in class but sitting hours
away at different schools growing,
sharing, and learning on their own.
Knowing that I won’t see them every day in the hallways at school
doesn’t seem real yet and probably
won’t until I’m hours away from the
halls of GHV and am surrounded by
strangers.
As I was paging through the book,
I was starting to think of all the people I would miss next year. That’s
when I noticed my teacher had put
a star by a single sentence on page
6. “No matter how old you are –
PEOPLE WHO READ
NEWSPAPERS ARE:
BETTER
SCHOOL
BOARD
MEMBERS
LItEADER
all starts
THE
by Megan Finley
with Newspapers
when you go out into the world, it
is best to hold hands and stick together.” This sentence meant a lot
more to me today than it ever would
have in kindergarten. On the 17th, I
will be graduating with some of my
best friends in the world, and even
though we won’t be together all the
time, the friends we make in school
will always be our friends, and the
lessons we learned in kindergarten
will always stick with us.
I’ve been fortunate enough to be
in a school surrounded with people
who care and want me to succeed.
Whether it’s my closest friends or
my very first teacher, I know that no
matter where I end up in life, I’ve
learned lessons that will help me every day, and I have friends who will
always stick with me.

On April 23 students gathered at
Willowbrook Mall in Mason City
for the Regional Invention Convention. Garner-Hayfield Elementary
students had been working on their
inventions for a few months.
They first presented their projects
at school explaining to their TAG
teacher what they had learned from
the invention process.
When asked what their favorite
part was, most students said developing the prototype.
“They learn how to problem
solve,” said Jennifer Kumsher, TAG
teacher at Garner-Hayfield. “When
things don’t go right the first time,
they have to think of ways to improve their invention.”

NIACC students are winners of
statewide logo design competition
North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) would like to recognize two students for designing
winning entries in the logo design
competition for the John Pappajohn
Iowa Entrepreneurial Venture Competition with a prize of $500. Payton Stadtlander of Garner and Kyler
Smith of Mason City each submitted
a logo and were asked to collaborate together on one logo. Each was
awarded $250.
Stadtlander stated, “Creating this
logo was challenging but enjoyable
because I was able to express my
creativity in a form of art. I am very
passionate about graphic designing, and I was enthused when hear-
ing mine was chosen as part of the
winning design.»
The logo design competition was
open to students at their respective
host institutions. Designers were
asked to develop a logo for the business plan competition that is neutral
in color and theme to all of the centers. To be eligible, students had to
be registered at least part time during
the spring semester 2015 at Drake
University, Iowa State University,
North Iowa Area Community College, University of Iowa, or University of Northern Iowa. NIACC Visual Arts Instructor Wayne Allison
commented on his students’ win.
“Considering the level of competition, we are thrilled that two NIACC
students were chosen as the winners.
It demonstrates that our students can
compete with the best, so I congratulate Kyler and Payton for their excellent work.”
Area graduates
receive special
recognition at NIACC
commencement
North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) graduates were recognized during the May 1, 2015, commencement. Special recognition was
given to Phi Theta Kappa Graduate
