In late February, the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion in collaboration
with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of VaudreuilSoulanges and retailers affected by the work of St.Charles
overpass launched an extensive advertising campaign called
Je vis ICI j’achète ICI. It was a first for our city and the results
were very conclusive. The council was aware that the work on
the overpass had affected the attendance in our local retail
businesses. Although the Ministry of Transport of Quebec was
in charge, we decided to support our retailers and set up a
multiplatform promotional campaign with Viva Media. As you
know, a portion of the overpass has been closed again for a
few weeks to finalize the work. This time it will be for a short
period and will certainly be less painful than last summer! I
invite you to continue to buy local. We are fortunate to have
many variety shops that allow us to do our shopping close to
your home. These retailers are important in our lives and in
many cases they are also valued corporate volunteers who
help our various organizations and associations.
On another note, I represented the City at the Cultural Summit and Sustainable Cities held in Bilbao. Vaudreuil- Dorion
was the only North American city to have been selected as a
model city. Following our conference, I was touched by the
comments of participants who said they were impressed with
the project Je Suis ... I must say that we were the smallest city
with our 36,800 residents compared to other model cities
whose populations ranged from 80 000 to 30 million residents. I share our sense of pride with you, because this success would not have been possible without your participation
and support.
Last April 24th, we received some great news : the Federal
Transport Minister, Lisa Raitt, announced the introduction of
a speed limit in urban areas for trains carrying hazardous
materials. Even before the Lac-Mégantic tragedy, the City of
Vaudreuil- Dorion intervened several times requesting a lower
train speed limit in urban areas. We have organized a petition, we installed large posters asking the trains to slow down,
I did several interviews asking for a train speed reduction in
urban areas. We are pleased that our suggestions were accepted. It is a victory for all the cities and their citizens who
expressed their outrage loud and clear.
Let’s talk sports, I invite you to participate in large numbers in
the Grande boucle des Trois-Lacs. I am pleased to be honorary chairman of this second edition. Cycling is a sport that I
did not practice until the day Francine St -Denis asked me, on
behalf of the organizing committee, to accept the honorary
presidency of this event. I started training seriously and I’m
impressed with the results. In my case, it was all about getting
back in shape and discovering a sport that should keep me
very active in the coming months!
I am very excited to be taking part in the 20
km family bycicle run with my two granddaughters ages 2 and 9. From an early age, children
should be introduced to physical activity, but it
is never too late to start.

REGULATION
The City Council adopted on February 16th a new article ( 34.5 ) in the municipal nuisance bylaw . This article concerns the
noise generated by motorized or electric engines, such as lawnmowers and lawn tractors, trimmers, chain saws, leaf blowers,
etc. You can now use this type of machinery during the following hours :
We also remind you that dogs are prohibited in parks, with the exception of canines areas on Marier Street at the corner of des
Merisiers, on du Ruisselet street, on Lorne Worseley street and the corner of montée Cadieux and St. Charles Avenue. Also,
dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. This regulation is to protect the many people who are afraid of dogs even if they are
friendly. It is mandatory to pick up animal feces, otherwise you could be fined.

On April 23rd, the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion unveiled the
textile hot air balloon made by Tina Stuthers, symbolizing our mission and values. The words on it were written in a cultural mediation activity carried out among
all City employees. Martin Houde, the city’s General
Manager, said he was particularly proud of their
participation. As a team we want to provide
citizens with quality services.

REVITALIZATION
After a first phase of public consultations held between October 2014 and February 2015, the City Council adopted last
winter a special planning program (SPP). The SPP is used to
give more details about proposed changes that gives a municipality the opportunity to exercise its influence in respect of
a preticular sector. The City of Vaudreuil-Dorion is currently
working on the SPP to plan the redevelopment ( zoning standards, implementation criteria and architectural integration,
etc.) and is also working on solutions to plan the revitalization
of the area. This plan will be included in the final SPP, which
is expected to be adopted this fall.
MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT ON HARWOOD
In its development policy, the City wants the sector to become
an economic hub of regional interest reflecting the success
of Vaudreuil-Dorion. The City was pleased when the MRC of
Vaudreuil-Soulanges publicly announced on May 5th its intention to build a new building on Harwood Boulevard that will
also house regional organizations . The City of VaudreuilDorion took the opportunity to publicly launch the graphic
identity that will link each new project to the revitalization
project.
DUMONT SQUARE – BLOCK PARTY
The population has clearly expressed a desire to see its living conditions improve on short terms with concrete actions.
The City announced that a special attention will be given to
place Dumont, at the intersection of St.Charles Avenue and
boulevard Harwood by the summer. In addition to installing
giant flower pots, the area will be landscaped and pedestrianized temporarily in order to test the revitalization. Inspired
by the tactical urban planning which allows for spontaneous
changes in the urban environment quickly and at a low cost,
a street party will be organized on August 20th,animated by a
DJ or live music and grab a bite to eat in the evening. Temporary facilities to enhance the public space will be in place
as well as a few retailers.

THE OVERPASS OF ST. CHARLES AVENUE, WILL BE COMPLETED IN THE
COMING MONTHS, WHILE OTHERS WILL START SHORTLY.
HERE IS AN OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN PROJECTS ON THE TERRITORY.

• In about six weeks the St. Charles Avenue overpass will
be completely finished. Ongoing work includes removing the temporary paving southbound, the installation
of a waterproofing membrane, pavement and permanent
roadmarking. Road signs will be in place and traffic lights
will be programmed. Finally, sidewalks and bicycle lanes
will be cleaned. Initiated in 2012, this project required a
total investment of approximately $ 16 million ($ 12.5
million from the Quebec Ministry of Transportation and
$ 3.5 million from the City) was carried out in several
phases and has doubled the number of lanes crossing
highway 40 in each direction improving the traffic flow.
• Ongoing project since January 2014, the expansion
and upgrade of the water treatment plant will be finalized in September. The new equipment required to
ensure sufficient drinking water supplies is already in
operation. This upgrade allows us to triple the production capacity to meet the needs of our constant growing
population. Regarding the wastewater treatment plant,
the expansion and upgrades began last summer. Foundation reinforcement is completed, the demolition
work is underway and the foundation of new buildings
started. Completion is scheduled for summer 2016.
The total cost of the water filtration plant is $ 25.72
million while the cost of the wastewater treatment plant
totals $ 55.8 million.
• Work to extend Maurice Richard Street to de la Gare
Boulevard should be completed this summer. The traffic
light will be moved to this intersection and a median will
separate the ways of de la Gare Boulevard between Maurice-Richard Street and the Cité-des-Jeunes boulevard.
• Another ongoing project in the Marier Street area : the
extension of municipal services. The work, estimated at $
977,000, should be completed in a few weeks and will
allow residents of this neighborhood to access the HenryFord street without having to detour through Valois street.
• The work to enlarge Dumberry street near St. Charles
Avenue began in May. Curbs, street lights, traffic light
and pavement should be completed by mid-July. The cost
for this project is estimated at $ 2,447,000.
• Sewage system, aqueduct and roads should be completed shortly at the Place 20-30-40 (64 lots on SylvainLelièvre and Pierre-Mercure streets). In the same sector,
pavement, curbs and street lighting will be installed in
September on Claude-Léveillé and André-Mathieu streets.
• A new CIT La Presqu’île bus shelter was installed in April
on Cité-des-Jeunes boulevard, near the restaurant La
Cage aux Sports.
• This summer, geometric changes will be made to rue des
Aubépines, at the intersection of André- Chartrand Avenue to be in the same axis as Chopin street.
• In July work should start on the water network on Lafleur Street between Bourget and Pilon, construction
work should take approximately 7 weeks. A grant from
the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy (
Infrastructure Program Quebec-Municipalities) as been
requested for this $ 400,000 project.
PARKS AND GREEN SPACES
• Saint-Jean- Baptiste and Sainte-Madeleine pools will be
refurbished in September so the bathers will be able to
enjoy the pools for the whole summer. This represents a
$ 50,000 investment.
• The Parc de la Seigneurie park basketball court will also
be refurbished this fall.
• Landscaping, including sodding, is expected to be completed shortly in Parc de la Paix.
• In late August, swings and playground modules for kids
2-5 years and 6-12 years will beinstalled in parc Vivaldi.
Landscaping and the installation of these accessories may
take up to 4 weeks.
• The bicycle paths will once again be extended this year.
The addition of a section on the Cité -des-Jeunes boulevard will link St. Charles Avenue to de la Gare Boulevard.
Work will begin as soon as the City acquires the portions
of land necessary for their realization. In this sector, a
pedestrian light will be installed between the two commercial areas where you can find the restaurant La Cage
aux Sports and on the other side the Canadian Tire store.
An off-street bike path will be built between the private
arena on Paul-Gérin-Lajoie and St.Charles Avenue. Cyclistes and pedestrians should be able to use it by the end
of August. The entire project is estimated at $ 486,000.

GOOD NEWS : OTTAWA IMPOSES A SPEED LIMIT FOR
FREIGHT TRAINS IN URBAN AREAS
The Federal Transport Minister Lisa Raitt announced on April 23th the introduction of a speed limit in urban areas ( 64 km / h )
for freight trains. Mayor Guy Pilon welcomes this ministerial injuction.
In Vaudreuil -Dorion, the railway crosses several residential areas. The City along with residents had already made representations to the Canadian Pacific Railway for a speed reduction, long before the Lac-Megantic tragedy.
In the summer of 2013, the City had sent a petition to the Minister of Transportation asking a train speed reduction in urbanized
areas. Three giant posters were also installed along the railway asking trains to slow down.

What is the difference between the yellow and the white stripes
markings at an intersection?

During our council meetings, citizens regularly complain
about the lack of courtesy of drivers, particularly at pedestrians crossings. For example : elderly people trying to cross
de la Gare boulevard, at the intersection of du Manoir must
wait quite a while before a car stops to let them cross . Or
a mother with a stroller is almost hit by a vehicle, even if the
white silhouette of the traffic light indicates to cross.
City officials are well aware of this problem. Requests are regularly made to the Sûreté du Québec asking police officers
to pay more attention to crosswalks. Unfortunately, it turns
out that Quebecers are discourteous drivers. Anyone who has

MOVING AND FIRE
PREVENTION
In Quebec, on July 1st a lot of people are moving! Please
make sure you are well protected against fire.
First, change the batteries in your smoke detector and verify
them to be certain they are functional. Verify the fabrication
date and if it indicates that it was made more than ten years
ago you should replace them. If you are a tenant, ask the
owner to provide a new device, it is his responsibility! Your
new home must be equipped with at least one smoke detector
on each floor.
Your residence has an oil-fired furnace, a wood stove, a fireplace or an appliance that runs on oil, natural gas or propane? Install a carbon monoxide detector. Same thing if your
garage is attached to your house and you park your car
inside. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install. It can
be fixed at any height on the wall, since carbon monoxide
spreads evenly in the air.
PREVENTIVE VISITS
Until September, firefighters will conduct residential preventive visits in some residential areas. Required by the Quebec
Ministry for Public Security, these visits are intended to reduce
fires hazards and their devastating consequences.
Firefighters will present themselves wearing their uniform and
clearly identified, Monday to Thursday from 9am to 8pm and
on Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 5pm. During their visit,
they will verify the presence of a working smoke detector on
every floor of the building, as required by regulations, will
check fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors. They
will also provide information on heating, electricity, evacuation plan, frying hazards and the importance of having cleared exits.
Finally, these visits allow us to update the 9-1-1 database. In
case of an emergency call, the dispatcher is able to provide
information to firefighters to help them respond appropriately.

It is also strongly recommended that you purchase a portable
2 kg powder extinguisher type A, B and C in the event of a
small fire.
Finally, consider preparing an evacuation plan and discuss it
with your family members. These simple gestures could make
all the difference in case of fire ... and save your life!
No doubt you have seen this black and white car driving up
and down the streets in your neighborhood to ensure the safety of our citizens. Preventive surveillance and on duty 7 days
a week, the patrol ensures compliance with municipal regulations, for example in regard to the Regulation on nuisances
and one on the outside use of drinking water. The patrol can
issue fines.
After business hours, the Patrol takes over and responds to
citizens complaints and requests (with the 3-1-1 service). The
patrol can also assist the Sûreté du Québec officers if necessary.
UNFOUNDED FIRE ALARMS
Every year the Fire Department receives a large number of
unfounded alarms, often triggered when preparing meals. But
these calls divert firefighter’s genuine emergencies and are expensive to the municipality.
The majority of fire detectors in private residences have a 90
seconds delay function before transmitting the alarm signal to an
emergency central. Please make sure it is functional. This delay
will allow you to verify if it is necessary to dispatch firefighters or
to cancel by dialing the access code to the system keyboard.

We know the bond that now unites the Chaplin family and the
Circus festival, particularly because of the big top named Eugene
Chaplin. Kiera Chaplin, granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin and
internationally renowned supermodel, is the global ambassador
for the Amy Winehouse Foundation, helping young people fight
against the use of drugs and alcohol. The Foundation supports,
informs and inspires the most vulnerable and disadvantaged kids
to enable them to reach their full potential. Mitch Winehouse and
Kiera Chaplin will be guest of honor and spokesperson for the
11th edition of the Festival from June 19th to 23rd. The father of the
famous singer Amy Winehouse, winner of five Grammy Awards,
will be present to enjoy a tribute number in honour of his daughter
at The Great Circus show.

Yannick Gosselin, founder of the Festival, reveals that 15 students
ages 6 to 13, from the Vaudreuil-Soulanges circus school and
the Gymini gymnastics club have prepared a special number to
honour the singer. Composer Koos Mark adapted the song Valerie
which will be interpreted by the Cité-des-Jeunes music band.

THE GREAT CIRCUS
It is the fourth edition of the international competition. The Grand Cirque
is a great family show featuring the best circus artists in the world from
Germany, Guatemala, Turkmenistan, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Cuba,
the United States and Canada. This year’s various performances will
be amazing! The event will take place in the big top with its 1500
seats. The Eugene Chaplin big top is the largest canvas painted by
hand in the world and deploys its four poles at a height of 79 feet.
THE FESTIVAL IS ALSO CELEBRATING ON THE
STREETS!
All exterior shows are free! On the Desjardins stage, Ms. Guillotine, K-Boom the Clown and Karnaval will entertain kids while
on the Loto–Québec stage, the Boogie Wonder Band will be
playing onFriday, June 19th, Les Respectables will play on
Saturday June 20th and Alfa Rococo will play on June 23th.
Entertainment, rides, trapeze workshops, juggling, makeup
artists and more will also be part of the festivities!
Fact: In the tradition of the European circus, the Festival is honored
to have Russian Andrej Jigalov, one of the most famous clowns in the
world. Since late April, he has been on every poster to promote the
Festival’s 11th edition!

The watering permit is free. However, a $ 20 fee will be applied if a change of dates is required once the permit as been
issued. No permit will be issued between July 1st and August 31st.
Manual watering of flowers, gardens, flower beds, shrubs, washing motor vehicles, walls or windows is allowed at any time,
either with a watering can or a self-closing nozzle.
SWIMMING POOLS
At the beginning of the season, please remember
that it is mandatory to treat the water instead of completely emptying the pool. The filling for the purpose
of maintaining the water level is allowed at any time
outside watering hours. As for backwashes, it should
not last more than five minutes.
Any person contravening the Regulations on the outdoor water use is liable to a fine ranging from $ 150
to $ 2,000 for an individual and from $ 300 to $
4000 for a company.

RECYCLING
CONTRUCTION MATERIAL
These changes were necessary, as a result of the adoption
of the Quebec Policy on waste management and the 20112015 Action Plan of the Quebec Government, to ban timber
burial.
The construction and demolition materials are now excluded
from the waste collection, the collection of recyclable materials and the collection of bulky waste (excluding baths,
showers, sinks and toilets). In the case of small projects, ci-
tizens can bring their construction waste to the eco-center.
For larger projects, it is necessary to use a container that will
then be sorted and recycled rather than sent to the landfill.

Did you know that since January 1st, 2013, the recovery of
construction and demolition waste is mandatory for all the
territory of Vaudreuil-Dorion (Section 3.3.1.7 of Regulation
No. 1586-01) ? Indeed, amendments to the regulations on
waste have been made. It is now the contractor’s responsibility or owner carrying out the renovation work to see that
all construction and demolition materials are recycled rather
than sent to landfill.
EMERALD ASH BORER
SCREENING : A PRIORITY
The emerald ash borer ( Agrilus planipennis ) is a beetle from
Asia whose presence has been confirmed in North America
in 2002 ( Detroit and Windsor ) and in Quebec, Carignan, in
2008. Since then, several Quebec cities have been trying to
control the invasion of this insect that attacks all types of ash
trees and spreads rapidly. Now 22 US states and two Canadian provinces are affected. Experts estimate that more than
100 million ash trees have been killed by this insect in the US
and Canada since 2002. This exotic species is coming into
North America by freight and timber shipments. No presence
of EAB has not yetbeen detected in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges
area, but has been found in Montreal, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue and the County of Prescott - Russell Ontario. The emerald
ash is probably already present on the territory, but it just has

not been identified at this time.
The emerald ash borer is a metallic green insect no bigger
than a grain of rice. The adult insect feeds on the leaves of
ash trees. There lay eggs and when they hatch, the larva digs
into the thin layer of wood under the bark. The larva spends
the winter under the bark and emerges as an adult insect the
following summer.
Signs of infestation are visible three to four years after the infestation started. Then you notice a premature yellowing of foliage,
dying branches and thinning crown are the most significant signs
of infestation. D-shaped holes may be visible on the bark and
S-shaped galleries under the bark. Many new branches on the
shaft also indicate the presence of the insect. Usually the tree dies
in less than seven years.

HOW TO IDENTIFY ASH TREES?
There are three species of ash trees in the area : white ash
(Fraxinus americana), red ash ( Fraxinus pennsylvanica ) and
black ash (Fraxinus nigra). Their characteristics are essentially
the same :

• Leaves are made of 5 to 11 leaflets
• Opposite branches
• Mature tree: thick bark, formed of rigid intersecting ridges
in regular diamond shape
• The black ash tree bark is however rather scaly
• Young tree: bark rather smooth and thin
WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS IF I HAVE AN
ASH TREE ON MY LAND? WHAT IF I SUSPECT THAT MY ASH TREE IS AFFECTED?
It is possible to preventively treat healthy or slightly affected ash trees by the emerald ash borer with a biopesticide,
TreeAzin. The City offers a grant for the application of this
treatment,a refund of 50% of costs, up to $ 200 per tree.
However, if the trees are heavily infected, treatment will not be
effective and it will be recommended to cut it down becomes
it weakens and becomes dangerous. Il will also reduce the
risk of spreading the insect.
If you find the presence of the emerald ash borer, please
contact the Environment department, who will either issue a
permit for the application of the biopesticide or a permit to
cut the tree down (no fees).

The City of Vaudreuil-Dorion took an inventory of public ash
trees last summer. Traps were also installed in eight strategic
locations to detect the presence of the insect. A plan of action
was developed and will be updated annually. You can visit the
Environment section on the city’s website or come visit us.

TWO NEW GRANTS
A change has been brought to our tree grant program for
buffer strips. The City allocates a 50% reimbursement for the
purchase of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants to revegetate river buffer strips five meters wide (reimbursement up to
$ 300).
Finally, the City provides financial assistance to homeowners
applying a preventive treatment (TreeAzin) on ash trees
against emerald ash borer. You may be reimbursed 50% of
costs, for a maximum of two ash trees per address, per year,
up to $ 200 per tree.
Programs to plant trees Verdissons Vaudreuil-Dorion and the
program Une naissance, un arbre have meanwhile been enhanced : two trees are now eligible per address per year, in
the Verdissons Vaudreuil-Dorion program reimbursement is
now $ 75 per tree.

MORE VEGETATION

Last fall, the parks and green spaces Division of the Public Works Department
launched an important project aimed to get more vegetation in several parts of
the city. Trees are essential and can increase the value of these areas.
The City has developed significantly in recent years. Although today, the regulations require to plant a tree in front of a new construction, this was not always
the case. Therefore, several residential areas are treeless. Without trees the residences are exposed to winds and their dust trails, do not have shade or privacy.
Faced with this problem, the city started the program De la valeur à planter, to
have more trees on our territory. So, 200 trees were planted in the fall of 2014,
in the Marier street sector (des Merisiers, des Pruches, des Maronniers, etc.), and
trees will be planted every year in different areas. Plantation, irrigation, fertilization and maintenance work is done by the Public Works Department.
Citizens have welcomed the project with enthusiasm. You can already admire
the tree leaves in a neighborhood that was completely denuded last year. De la
valeur à planter could quickly change the look of the city.

Trees in the Parc de la Maison Valois were covered with knitting to mark the 100th
anniversary of the Fédération du cercle des fermières du Québec, the knitting
was done to create a unifying event for its members. Several Quebec municipalities have joined in. Vaudreuil ‘s fermières had the help of friends and fellow
citizens : le parrainage civique ( knitters of Bel-Air park) , Coop de la Seigneurie
and participants from elderly centers : the Felix, the Languedoc, the Manoir des
Îles, Manoir Harwood and Les Jardins Vaudreuil.
Thanks to numerous wool donations from the Centre d’action bénévole l’Actuel
and citizens, the trees are covered by more than 300 square meters of knitting.

TWO HONORABLE
WOMEN
Mrs Lorraine Messer and Mrs Monique Bourbonnais received on May
9th a Medal from the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec for seniors to
celebrate their volunteer work.
Mrs Messer, President of the Board of Directors of the Félix-Leclerc
house, has been involved since 1999 to save this historic house,
when she joined the volunteer group. Fundraising, countless meetings, meetings with professionals, forms complete, she never gave
up. And thanks to her efforts, in June 2014, the House has finally
officially opened !

The Director General of the Felix-Leclerc house, Simon Bissonnette
speaks highly of her «Lorraine is a passionate woman, persistant and
determined. She is at the house daily. She works 30 to 40 hours per
week. Without her, this project would never have been done.»
Monique Bourbonnais is very involved with the palliative care center in Vaudreuil-Soulanges. Already very implicated in the community
with the Centre des femmes La Moisson, she was asked back in 2004
to be part of this adventure as an administrator. She uses her experience in organizing events to encourage the financial commitment of
companies, organizations and citizens of the region.
The palliative care center celebrated its 10th anniversary in January.
Over 650 patients from 23 municipalities in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges
came to the center to pass away with dignity ... thanks to volunteers
like Ms. Bourbonnais.
The City Council proudly nominated these two outstanding volunteers.

Marie-Ève Vinet received the Youth Medal of the Lieutenant Governor. She joined
a male-dominated program, the motorized equipment department. The young woman attended the Professionnal Training Centre Paul-Gérin-Lajoie from February
5th, 2013 to October 21st, 2014. She remained determined throughout her training
and has earned the respect of her colleagues while keeping her smile, despite the
teasing and preconceptions.
She is an inspiration to women reintegrating work, the embodiment of what team
spirit is by supporting her colleague, qualified for the provincial Olympics in 2013,
throughout his preparation for competition being fully dedicated, it was obvious for
the CFP Paul-Gérin-Lajoie that Marie-Ève was the perfect candidate for this honorary award.

GRANTS TO ORGANIZATIONS
On February 26th, representatives of various organizations gathered at the Multisports Centre for the grant distribution by the
City of Vaudreuil-Dorion for the year 2015. More than $ 400,000 was distributed to various organizations and foundations
working within the municipal territory.
MAYOR FOR A DAY
Every year, the Optimist Club, in collaboration with the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion, holds a very special day for students from
the schools Hymne-au-Printemps, Sainte-Madeleine and Harwood. To take part in this activity, students must have excelled
in the art of expressing themselves, the GovernorS spelling
test and the chess tournament.

A YOUNG VAUDREUIL-DORION
ATHLETE WITH A PROMISING
FUTURE
Sarah-Jeanne Carey can claim to be the sixth best skater in Eastern
Canada in the female 2nd year Cadet category. She earned the title on
March 22nd at the Canadian short track championships in Fredericton. Her participation is an achievement, since she is the first 12 year
old skater from the Club de patinage de vitesse des Trois-Lacs to reach
a national competition. The young athlete won a bronze medal in the
women’s relay .
Earlier this season, Sarah-Jeanne had distinguished herself by winning
the silver medal in the women’s 800 meters juvenile level in the Jeux du
Quebec in Drummondville.

MY LITTLE READING BOX : TAKE A
BOOK OR LEAVE ONE!
Beginning on June 1st, 10 wooden book boxes will be installed in public places to promote reading by enabling a
free public book exchange. A great opportunity to literary
discoveries!
The little reading box project also included a cultural mediation component. It took 6 weeks and ten 3 hour workshops with students to decorate the boxes with collage and
mosaic under the supervision of the artist Monica Brinkman.
Karine Marin, head of the Culture Division and community
life, is excited : «The idea was to make the books accessible
but also to incorporate this new project as a cultural mediation activity. Employees of the Public Works Department
built the structures, students from primary school in Vaudreuil -Dorion contributed enthusiastically to the making of
each of the small boxes.

FEATURED FLOWER
For the 2015 season, the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion has opted for the Frosty Red flower as the main feature in the flower
arrangements. Bright red, contrasting with silver foliage, this
flower stay beautiful until the first frost. Easy to maintain, it
requires very little watering and can withstand extreme heat.
Special feature : it is a flower that closes at night and on
rainy days. This flower was given to residents on May 9th
Family Day by City officials who visited several parks to offer
a plant in exchange for non-perishable food, food given to
L’Actuel to help families in need.
This summer, a classifier from Fleurons Quebec will visit our
city to give a rating on our horticultural beautification program : parks, green areas, roads, bicycle paths, etc. The
evaluation criteria include cleanliness, maintenance, variety
of horticultural elements and overall municipal landscape.
Points are awarded for the municipal sector but also for residential, institutional, commercial and industrial areas, as well
as community initiatives and sustainable development. The
evaluation will take place in August and we hope many will
participate by enhancing their landscape.
Facebook Contest
Share a picture of your family planting flowers on the City’s
Facebook page (villevaudreuildorion) for a chance to win a
prize! The winners will be randomly selected among all entries
received. You have until July 3, 2015 at noon to participate.

What do ladybugs, butterflies, lacewings, hoverflies and
Cetonids have in common? They are useful pollinators for
reproduction of many flower species, but also essential for
the production of fruits and vegetables. Aware of their benefits, the Public works horticulture team has created an environment for the development of those insects. In addition to
flowers, one can admire the first insect hotel. This summer,
visit the de la Canardière park to discover the Zone Habitat
project.

Classes are held at the parc de la Maison-Valois (at the Multisports Centre in case of bad weather) from July 6 to August 30 at

This activity combines walking, light weight training and balance
exercises. It is designed for people who want to start exercising,
for the elderly and those who want to recover after an injury.
