A Note-Able Evening of Romance:
Broadway Lights
“What an amazing night!” “The music was
incredible!” “I don’t know the last time I had so
much fun!” “Did you see the tap dancers!?”
These were just a few of the comments we
heard as people left the Atlantis Grand Ballroom
following A Note-Able Evening of Romance:
Broadway Lights on February 2nd, 2013.
More than 450 people were treated to the
sounds of Jakki Ford, Steven Murdoch, the Reno
Jazz Orchestra and The Note-Ables. We were
also delighted to have the Fascinating Rhythm
tap dancers, Marty Lewis, and volunteers from
the Reno Fire Department.

We are grateful for everyone
who joined us on Feb 2nd. Please
take a moment to look at the
last page of this newsletter and
join us in thanking the dozens of
businesses and individuals who
made this event possible. We
are already starting to plan our
10th Evening of Romance in
2014. It will be full of fabulous
surprises – stay tuned!

Message from Manal
Well, we are only six weeks into the new year, and things have gotten off to a
phenomenal start here at Note-Able Music Therapy Services. On the therapy front, we
have started two new music therapy contracts – one with Circle of Life Community
Hospice and one with the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System. We now have more
than 30 individual music therapy clients, and another 60 participants in our other onsite classes.
On the performance and outreach front, we performed as part of the Renown Healing
Arts Concert Series, put on our 9th annual Evening of Romance, sang for the opening of
the 77th legislative session, and helped with The Therapy Sessions social media
campaign put on by Ad2 Reno. Sara gave two community music therapy
presentations, Sheena attended the statewide Volunteer and Corporate Engagement
Summit in Las Vegas, and we all somehow managed to keep the day-to-day
operations afloat. What a team!
We have set the bar pretty high in the past few weeks, but we are just getting started.
In addition to planning our annual spring recital, Artown concert, and Noodles and
Notes, we are thrilled to be celebrating our 10th anniversary as a nonprofit organization!
We have lots of exciting things planned throughout the year, and we are asking YOU
to join us in remembering and looking forward to the future. What are your favorite
memories of NMTS? Was there a concert or event that touched your life? Was there a
class or therapy session that made a strong impression? Have you made special friends
through your involvement with NMTS? What things do you want to see us do in the next
ten years? We want to hear from you, and will be featuring your stories in the
newsletter and on our website throughout the year. And speaking of looking ahead,
make sure to mark your calendars for these events: Tenth Anniversary Celebration
Brunch (May 5th), Spring Recital (May 18th), Teen Camp (June 17th -21st), and Artown
(July 18th). See you soon!
Take Note: Performance at Nevada State Legislature
The Note-Ables performing group was invited to play at the 77th opening
session of the Nevada Legislature in Carson City on February 4th, 2013. The
group sang God Bless America, My Country tis of Thee and Home Means
Nevada in front of more than 100 Senators, elected officials, staffers, and
members of the press. After the performance, a reporter from the Las Vegas
Sun interviewed several of the group members. He said that he has been
covering the Nevada legislative sessions for years, and this was “the most
unique and touching thing” he has seen.
Susan Boskoff, Executive Director of the Nevada Arts Council, reminded us that
“The creative process is always at the heart of good public policy,” and we
couldn’t agree more! It was truly an honor to have the opportunity to
demonstrate the power of the arts, while raising awareness of the importance
of diversity and inclusion in the lives of all citizens of our state.

Note-Able Music Therapy
Services is funded, in part, by
a grant from the Nevada Arts
Council, a division of the
Department of Cultural Affairs,
and the National Endowment
for the Arts, a federal agency.
It was very fitting that between Veterans' Day, when we recognize our veterans
and all they have done for our country, and Thanksgiving, when we show our
gratitude for so many and for so much, the creation of a music therapy program at
Walter Reed Army Medical Center and at the National Intrepid Center of
Excellence (NICoE) was announced. What an appropriate way to honor and
provide assistance to those who serve our country!
This expansion of the landmark partnership between the National Endowment for
the Arts (NEA) and Department of Defense was discussed at a recent media
teleconference. NEA chair Rocco Landesman mentioned that Walter Reed is the
first "point of care in the U.S. for the wounded, ill and injured from global conflicts"
and that many troops are now returning with traumatic brain injury and
psychological health issues, "complex diagnoses that call for a new level of care."
Walter Reed's NICoE has the first state-of-the-art research center to test treatment
plans integrating creative arts therapies alongside traditional rehabilitative
treatments for patients in military settings. In November 2012, music therapy was
added to healing art efforts at NICoE and throughout Walter Reed with the hiring
of music therapist Julie Garrison and music therapy consultant Meagan Morrow,
who worked with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Music therapy will be a part
of the groundbreaking, interdisciplinary approach to working with patients and
their families, according to Melissa Walker, creative arts therapist and the NICoE's
Healing Arts Program Coordinator. Ms. Garrison will work with military patients,
active duty troops with TBIs and psychological health issues at the NICoE and with
patients throughout Walter Reed, including active duty, veterans, and their
beneficiaries.
