Carl (Favreau) works hard at Dustin Hoffman’s LA restaurant but is sacked having been frustrated at having to consistently cook unimaginative food that is then damned online by a leading food critic. The subsequent road trip with his son and a mobile taco van allows for plenty of food ‘porn’ along with a really great Salsa soundtrack. Enjoy! 8pm FRI 11 SEP 2015UK/Italy 2013 | 92 mins | 12A OPENING NIGHT JOIN US ON THE DOOR STILL LIFE UBERTO PASOLINI Eddie Marsan, Joanne Froggatt Featuring a remarkable, wonderfully restrained performance from Eddie Marsan, this is a poignant and beautifully crafted film. He plays the role of an unassuming council worker whose job is to locate the next of kin of those who have passed away alone in the South London area. Laced with humour and pathos the film was a big hit at festivals last year and the end, both expected and unexpected, is unspeakably sad and hopefully light. A masterpiece in miniature. LFC_2015_PROGRAMME_AW.indd 2-3 8pm FRI 9 OCT 2015 Russia 2014 | 140 mins | 15 LEVIATHAN ANDREY ZVYAGINTSEV Aleksey Serebryakov, Elena Lyadova, Roman Madyanov A stunning film that won our committee ‘Best film this year award’! The title refers both to Hobbes’s Leviathan, the classic work about liberty and the state, and also the biblical ordeal of Job – brought to life in this magnificent Russian movie. A humble car mechanic is persecuted by a corrupt and drunken mayor against the spectacular background of the Barents shore. Vladimir Putin’s portrait looks down and the church is as cynical as the state. A surprisingly candid portrait of the abuse of power in contemporary Russia. It rings frighteningly true. 24/08/2015 16:49 With introduction from the Director and Q & A 8pm TUES 13 OCT 2015 UK 2012 | 77 mins | 15 THE MAN WHOSE MIND EXPLODED TOBY AMIES Drako Oho Zarrhazar, Toby Amies Adored by critics yet still to have a DVD release The Man Whose Mind Exploded is a documentary about the incredible Brightonian Drako Oho Zarrhazar. Drako suffers from brain damage which prevents him from creating new memories, however has an incredibly colourful past such as modeling for Salvador Dali or dealing drugs to the Rolling Stones. An honest portrayal of a complicated and incredible man. Warning: Features Male Nudity. 8pm FRI 23 OCT 2015 Belgium 2014 | 95 mins | 15 TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT JEAN PIERRE DARDENNE, LUC DARDENNE Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio Rongione, Olivier Gourmet Sandra (Cotillard) fights for her job and dignity in this feisty movie from the Dardenne brothers. Sandra’s job at a solar panel factory hangs on a vote by her 16 co-workers to either make Sandra redundant or else lose their annual bonuses if she stays on. On a secret-ballot vote of 14 to two, she is dismissed. In desperation, she orchestrates a weekend plan to win votes back and try to regain her job by Monday morning. The theme is global downsizing and solidarity among workers. An impassioned, exciting and moving film. LFC_2015_PROGRAMME_AW.indd 4-5 8pm FRI 6 NOV 2015 DOC | Fr/Br/It 2014 | 110 mins | 12A THE SALT OF THE EARTH WIM WENDERS Sebastiao Salgado, Wim Wenders, Juliano Robeiro Salgado The ravishing The Salt of the Earth is Wim Wenders' (Paris, Texas; Wings of Desire; Pina) documentary portrait of famous Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. Wenders depicts Salgado's world from his famous shots of Brazilian gold mines in the 1980s to his numerous travels and switch of focus from military subjects to environmental activism. This is a moving and life affirming tribute to a singular creative talent with stunning photography throughout. 24/08/2015 16:49 JAPANESE WEEKEND 8pm FRI 20 NOV 2015 Japan 2013 | Subtitles | 121 mins | 12 LIKE FATHER LIKE SON HIROKAZU KOREEDA Masaharu Fukuyama, Machiko Ono, Yôko Maki Ryota, a successful businessman learns that his biological son was switched with another child after birth. Mr Sakai, the other father, is a well-practised loafer, but his children start squeaking with joy when he so much as enters the room. What will happen? Kore-eda captures these children’s inner lives and thought processes so perfectly and may be the best director of children working today. A heart warming and tender story. 4pm SUN 22 November 2015 2pm - 3.30pm SUN 22 November 2015 PRESENTED BY RICHARD CUPIDI (DREAMWORKS) Free to LFC Members and ticket holders for Grave of the Fireflies JAPANESE ANIMATION AND THE FAMOUS STUDIO GHIBLI A short introduction to the work of Studio Ghibli, Japan's most lauded animation studio, and to one of its most sombre productions, Grave of the Fireflies. A beautifully rendered and poignantly told story of two children struggling to survive in the last days of WW2, the film draws on a number of Japanese mythologies, many perhaps invisible to the western eye. By illuminating these underlying contributions we hope to enrich your experience of the film. In any case, you get to watch Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli's founding director and creative visionary, cook noodles. LFC_2015_PROGRAMME_AW.indd 6-7 Japan 1988 | Subtitles | 89 mins | U Tea and cake from 3.30pm GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES ISAO TAKAHATA Tsutomu Tatsumi, Ayano Shiraishi, Akemi Yamaguchi An animated film telling the story of two children from the port city of Kobe, made homeless by the bombs towards the end of the second world war. 'Grave of the Fireflies' is an emotional experience so powerful that it forces a rethinking of animation and belongs on any list of the greatest war films ever made. The book is well-known in Japan, and might easily have inspired a live-action film. Animation allows Takahata to concentrate on the essence of the story, and the lack of visual realism in his animated characters allows our imagination more play. Described as “the most profoundly human animated film ever seen", this is a moving depiction of the fates of cast-off children who become casualties of war and an emotional epic we recommend everyone to watch. 24/08/2015 16:49 2016 8pm FRI 4 Dec 2015 Aus 2013 | 109 mins | 12A 52 TUESDAYS SOPHIE HYDE Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Del Herbert-Jane, Beau Travis Williams A story about a teenager dealing with her mother's decision to change her gender is told with subtlety and authenticity. While her mother makes the transition, Billie lives with her father for a year but every Tuesday afternoon she and her mother get together. An emotional tale of growing up and gaining wisdom with some amazing performances. 52 Tuesdays was shot consecutively over a year of real-life Tuesdays with the non-professional cast given their scripts one week at a time – a sort of Australian Dogme. 8pm FRI 8 JAN 2016 8pm FRI 18 Dec 2015 UK 1979 | 94 mins | 15 LIFE OF BRIAN TERRY JONES GRAHAM CHAPMAN, JOHN CLEESE Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Eric Idle A seasonal treat! From the opening scene this is Python par excellence. The Python crew refuse to spare anyone. Always threading in and around biblical stories, the plot never contradicts or denies the Bible, it just pokes fun at the hangers-on, charlatans, and pompous officials that organised religion often attracts. A beautiful film, a perfect comedy, and a gentle triumph of silliness over pomposity, self-importance, and intolerance – 'Life of Brian' could be the best British comedy ever. LFC_2015_PROGRAMME_AW.indd 8-9 UK 2014 | 111 mins | 12A X+Y MORGAN MATTHEWS Asa Butterfield, Rafe Spall, Sally Hawkins, Eddie Marston Developed by director Morgan Matthews from his own award-winning 2007 documentary, Beautiful Young Minds, about young British mathematicians who are on the autism spectrum. Asa Butterfield is cast as maths prodigy Nathan Ellis, a teenager with a form of autism. Brought up in the suburbs by his mum, Julie (Sally Hawkins), he is an awkward kid but he has a genius for maths. The film has an understated humour that generally helps keep mawkishness and self-pity at bay. The performances are likeable and affecting. An impish and compassionate drama; this is a British film to savour. 24/08/2015 16:49 SEASON OF 4 FILMS FROM AFRICA AND JORDAN Tea and cake from 3.30pm 8pm TUE 12 JAN 2016 Dem Rep Congo 2014 | Subtitles | Doc | 92 mins | U 4PM SUN 24 JAN 2016 Fra/Mau 2014 | Subtitles | 100 mins | 15 NATIONAL DIPLOMA TIMBUKTU DIEUDO HAMADI ABDERRAHMANE SISSAKO Abel Jafri, Hichem Yacoubi An accomplished fly on the wall documentary follows a group of Congolese high school students as they prepare for their National Diploma exam in Kisangani. Hamadi chronicles the plight of these students and exposes corruption in the education system where students who cannot pay are excluded from classes and spend time and energy trying to find ways to beat the system. Drawing out the smallest of details to add colour to his compassionate portrait of these students Hamadi has created a fascinating documentary. A unique piece of filmmaking and selected to compete for the Palm d’Or, Timbuktu is by ways funny and tragic; humane and unsettling. Focusing on the brief occupation of Timbuktu, Mali by Islamic extremists, Timbuktu allows one to see what extremism looks like in a non-western setting, obstructing people who are just trying to get on with their lives. A brilliant portrait of a place ruled by religion and a people traumatised by division. 8pm FRI 22 JAN 2016 8pm FRI 5 FEB 2016 Ethiopia 2014 | 99 mins | 12 UAE/UK/Jordan 2014 | Subtitles | 100 mins | 15 DIFRET THEEB ZERESENAY MEHARI Meron Getnet, Tipita Hagere NAJI ABU NOWAR Hussein Salameh, Jacir Eid, Jack Fox A rare film from Ethiopia, 'Difret' (which means 'courage' in Amharic) is loosely based on a real life challenge to the traditionally tolerated practise of forced marriage in the country, illuminating a shocking violation of the rights of young women in some rural areas. When 14 year old Hirut kills the leader of a gang of men who are trying to force her into marrying him she captures the attention of a tenacious lawyer who is willing to risk everything to gain justice for her. A beautiful insight into WW1-era Bedouin culture and the stunning vistas of Jordan. Theeb tells the story of two brothers whose days are spent in the beguiling ritual of nomadic life. Adhering to the strict code of Bedouin honour, they find themselves assisting a mysterious British officer on a treacherous journey across the desert while encountering Arab revolutionaries, Ottoman mercenaries and bloodthirsty raiders. A striking debut, and winner of a best director award at Venice. LFC_2015_PROGRAMME_AW.indd 10-11 24/08/2015 16:49 8pm TUES 9 FEB 2016 UK 2014 | 90 mins | 15 MARVELLOUS PETER BOWKER Toby Jones, Gemma Jones, Tony Curran A modern fairy tale, completely unbelievable and utterly heart-warming. The story of Neil Baldwin, a gentle soul, and a registered circus clown who, like a latter-day Zelig, managed to fulfil the most unlikely ambitions including playing for his beloved Stoke City despite having the footballing skills of an ungainly walrus. The extraordinary thing is that the most fantastical sections turned out to be true. The real Baldwin turned up alongside Toby Jones, his screen incarnation, to confirm the veracity of each tall tale as it unfolded… 8pm FRI 4 MAR 2016 8pm FRI 19 FEB 2016 Ger 2013 | Subtitles | 102 mins | 15 WEST CHRISTIAN SCHWOCHOW Jördis Triebel, Tristan Göbel, Alexander Scheer, Jacky Ido In this suspenseful Cold War drama, Nelly flees East Germany with her young son Alexej only to find herself caught in a frustrating limbo, reminiscent of current immigration centres on either side of the Channel Tunnel. Before Nelly can be processed and given West German citizenship, she must first prove her loyalty to the West – and in this camp, loyalty to the West means giving up the secrets of the East, even if you don’t have any. A riveting addition to the canon of Cold War cinema. LFC_2015_PROGRAMME_AW.indd 12-13 Germany 2014 | 107 mins | 15 STATIONS OF THE CROSS DIETRICH BRÜGGEMANN Florian Stetter, Franziska Weisz, Lea van Acken Told in fourteen fixed-angle, single shot individual tableaus that parallel Christ's journey to his own crucifixion, Stations Of The Cross is both an indictment of fundamentalist faith and the articulation of an impressionable teen's struggle to find her own path in life. A bold drama about a teenage girl who defies her Catholic parents and embarks on her own uniquely stringent campaign of religious fervour. Brüggemann’s film is also a darkly funny, frightening and ultimately moving meditation on the limits of faith. 24/08/2015 16:49 8pm TUES 8 Mar 2016 USA 2014 | 102 mins | 12A 8pm FRI 25 MAR 2016 Poland 2013 | 82 mins | 12A THE OVERNIGHTERS IDA JESSE MOSS Jay Reinke PAWEL PAWLIKOWSKI Agata Kulesza, Agata Trzebuchowska This tough, absorbing documentary could almost be a modern-day Grapes of Wrath, about the US oil industry's fracking boom in North Dakota. A local pastor, Jay Reinke, has set up a programme to let homeless transient workers sleep in his church and even his house. Driven by constant stories in the local press about criminals and sex offenders among these men, he is under constant pressure to abandon the scheme. What would Jesus do? With a final sucker punch this is a powerful, contemporary study. Winner of this year's Foreign Language Oscar (against worthy competition from 'Leviathan' and 'Wild Tales' – both featuring in this LFC season) and filmed in incandescent black & white, Ida is an intimate, poetic exploration of the limits of faith. Anna, a young novice preparing to take her vows, makes contact with her last remaining relative, an aunt who is a free-living intellectual working as a judge. The encounter exposes the dark secret of their family's past and both women must confront the devastating truth. A starkly beautiful minimalist masterpiece. 8pm FRI 18 MAR 2016 8pm FRI 8 APR 2016 USA 2015 | 105 mins | 12A ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL ALFONSO GOMEZ-REJON Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, Olivia Cooke, Nick Offerman Avoiding social interactions like the plague, awkward teenager Greg is forced by his mother to befriend Rachel, a classmate who's been diagnosed with leukaemia. Both Greg and Rachel are surprised – even shocked – to find out that they actually like each other. Tentative at first, this unlikely duo becomes inseparable. But when Rachel gets sicker, Greg’s world is changed forever. Funny, witty, intelligent and very emotional. LFC_2015_PROGRAMME_AW.indd 14-15 Sweden 2014 | 120 mins | 15 FORCE MAJEURE RUBEN ÖSTLUND Johannes Bah Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Clara Wettergre, Vincent Wettergren In this uncomfortably tense and funny film businessman Tomas, his beautiful wife Ebba and their two children are the model family. On a skiing holiday in the French Alps an avalanche threatens their idyllic trip, and in the face of impending disaster Tomas makes a snap decision that could cost him his marriage. Is this a portrait of two people wedded to gender roles they can't live up to or maybe a marriage stress-tested by a random event? Sophisticated, surprising and squirmingly perceptive. 24/08/2015 16:49 8pm TUES 12 APR 2016 Poland 2013 | 127 mins | 12 8pm FRI 6 MAY 2016 Spain 2014 | 105 mins | 15 WALESA: MAN OF HOPE MARSHLAND ANDRZEJ WAJDA Robert Wieckiewicz, Agnieszka Grochowska ALBERTO RODRÍGUEZ Raúl Arévalo, Javier Gutiérrez, Antonio De La Torre, Nerea Barros Andrzej Wajda's latest film tells the story of the electrician who became the leader of the Solidarity union, going on to win the Nobel Prize and become President of Poland. His actions triggered a revolution and the film charts his life from the suppression of the 1970 workers protests through to the imposition of Martial Law in 1981 and the fall of Communism in 1989. An invigorating and very enjoyable film from a director who shows no sign of slowing up. Set in 1980 against the civil unrest in the wake of Franco’s death, two teenage sisters have mysteriously disappeared under suspicious and brutal circumstances. Detectives Pedro and Juan are reluctantly sent to the repressed southern marshland town of Villafranco del Guadalquivir to investigate. A tense and intelligent thriller vividly evoking the murky atmosphere of the Andaluz swamplands. 7.30 pm AGM followed by film at 8pm 8pm FRI 22 APR 2016 USA 2014 | 103 mins | 15 8pm FRI 20 MAY 2016 Arg/Spain 2014 | 122 mins | 12A ROSEWATER WILD TALES JON STEWART Gael Garcia Bernal, Kim Bodnia DAMIÁN SZIFRON Ricardo Darín, Oscar Martínez LFC favourite, Gael Garcia Bernal, stars in the striking directorial debut of The Daily Show's host and satirist Jon Stewart, involving the real-life ordeal of London-based journalist Mazir Bahari who returns to his native Iran to report for the BBC on the 2009 election and is subsequently arrested by the Revolutionary Guard following Ahmadinejad's victory. Stewart achieves a superb balance between the plight of the individual and the wider, ethical and political implications of the story. Hilarious, but not for the sensitive, Wild Tales is a wickedly funny film that was nominated for the Cannes Palm d’Or (where it allegedly received a 10 minute standing ovation). An anthology film, Wild Tales features six stories linked by common themes of vengeance and dealing with the pressures of modern life. An ill-fated loan shark and a wedding to end all weddings are amongst the many fables this film has to offer. Brilliant!
