News and Information for Friends of the Freestore Foodbank
2 0 1 2 A N N UA L R E P O RT EDITION
A Gift for a Stranger
For the past 11 years, a special package arrives each December at the
Freestore Foodbank; its contents carefully enclosed, gently wrapped
with tissue paper and sealed with tape. It seems like an ordinary box by
appearance, but there’s nothing ordinary about it. What’s inside has what seems like - a magical power, the power to make people smile.
Underneath the cardboard, tape and deep green tissue paper is a labor
of love - 65 pairs of hand knitted mittens that come with an extraordinary
story.
The package’s return address takes you to a quaint home in the suburbs
of Cincinnati. Inside, shelves lined with books greet you in the living
room. On the couch is a ball of red yarn and a woman with a phenomenal
gift, Regina Villiers or “the Mitten Lady.”
“I don’t like to waste time, so if I’m watching TV, I’m knitting,” Regina
says with a laugh.
It was an image on her TV screen around Thanksgiving nearly a
decade ago that gave Regina a unique idea to help those in need. While
watching the news, Regina’s attention was captured by a woman waiting
to receive food for her family outside the Freestore Foodbank’s Customer
Connection Center. The woman’s hands were covered with only a thin
pair of socks.
“She stood quietly waiting for the line to move,” Regina recalls. “She
alternately kneaded and blew on her hands, trying to warm them. She was
a very pretty woman and well-kept. I felt like she was a good mother and
she needed mittens.”
Armed with a skill set learned in her teenage years, Regina went to
work, knitting mittens for the Freestore Foodbank to provide to families
at its December holiday food distribution.
“If you can keep somebody’s hands warm, you’re doing something.”
Each year, after the mittens are carefully packaged and shipped, she
often thinks of the people receiving her mittens. Regina, a mother of two,
has a heart to nurture others.
“I feel like I’m giving somebody I don’t know a present,” Regina says.
“To me, that’s the best kind of present you can get, one that someone
doesn’t have to give you.”
As the lights and holiday decorations come down, Regina has already
started on next year’s mittens. Stitch after stitch, she continues to think
of that stranger on TV who captured her attention and her heart nearly a
decade ago.
“I pretend I’m knitting them for her,” Regina says with a bright smile.
“Maybe she’ll be back for Christmas food, and maybe she’ll get a pair of
these mittens.” n

MISSION
We provide food and services, create stability
and further self-reliance for people in crisis.
Board of Trustees
Message from the President & CEO
This has been a “Year of Firsts” for the Freestore Foodbank. We’ve grown and expanded
our services, reached new milestones, and have moved in unexpected directions. It’s been a
good year in the face of adversity. We have moved forward in a variety of ways, sometimes
ground breaking ways!
This year we began a Summer Feeding program, bringing emergency food to children
when school is not in session. Many of them rely on in-school food programs to get by
during the academic year. We are not turning our backs on them because school is out.
2012 brought us new and unique opportunities. We teamed up with Cincinnati State
Community and Technical College to develop a program for students of Cincinnati Cooks
and our Second Course program to enroll at Cincinnati State and gain their Certificate in
Kitchen Management. Students can then go on to get their Associate Degree in Business
from Cincinnati State, and receive 33 credits toward their degree from their training with
us. An inner-city job training program has gained academic accreditation! Our first class of
14 graduated from the program on October 1. Five of these students have already enrolled
for their Associate Degree.
Our Cincinnati Cooks Catering group showed a profit for the first time. The profit
was plowed back into our Cincinnati Cooks job training program. Supporting this
program is the mission of Cooks Catering and we are very proud to report the success
of our catering initiative.
In the same vein, the Board of Trustees has established an Innovation Committee to
look at other social enterprise opportunities to benefit the Freestore Foodbank and our
programs. Non-profit organizations of the future will need to show the skill and initiative to
provide internal sources of support. Agencies must find innovative ways to be self-sustaining
in today’s economy, and our Board is leading the way.
This year, the Freestore Foodbank implemented the VESTA software system at the
Customer Connection Center. VESTA is the regional management database used by
Cincinnati’s social service providers. It allows for effective service management, prevents
duplication of effort, and cuts costs for us and the other social service agencies in our region.
2012 marked the first full year of our Kroger Food Reclamation program. Major
food chains regularly rotate their inventory, removing unsold product to be returned to
manufacturers or sold to other markets. This food is usually sent to handling companies that
inspect and redirect the food. Now we’re doing it for Kroger. Food Reclamation generated
a quarter of a million pounds of good food for our customers as the program ramps up –food
that might otherwise have been thrown out. We’re hoping that this program will yield 2.5
million pounds of food in the coming year.
The Freestore Foodbank won accolades as “Workplace of the Year” in the Cincinnati
Enquirer. We followed that up with our first company-wide survey, allowing us to identify
our strengths and areas for improvement.
This has been a year of moving forward, and the seeds planted
this year will continue to grow and produce results for the
Freestore Foodbank and those we serve. Plans are now being made
for next year’s Firsts. New opportunities for business and growth
are always ahead of us. And we will be there to walk through the
door when we see them.

WINTER 2013
Three Decades of Dedication
“I’ve stayed here so long because my
wife told me to,” he laughs. Tom has
“hundreds” of stories from those colorful
early days. From drivers repeatedly
running out of gas, to storing gallons
of donated soap from P&G in empty
Hudepohl tanks left at our first warehouse
on 40 East McMicken. “We used to
have to rent yellow Ryder trucks for the
USDA food deliveries,” he says. “One
time, we had a super-heavy load. When
a tire blew out, we just pulled over and
moved the stacks from one side of the
truck to the other. Then, when we were
about two miles from our destination,
the brakes gave out as we were careening
down this steep road with a razor sharp
turn at the bottom. I said, ‘Either we’re
going to hit another car coming the
opposite direction, or we’re going to flip
over.’ Neither happened, and we all lived
to tell about it.”
Among the strangest donations Tom
has seen over the years – live hens and
turkeys (which were deemed “overexercised”), 12 caskets, and beer from the
Fraternal Order of Police.
Barbara Lungelow, of Adventist
Outreach Ministries, has also known
and worked with Tom for decades. “He
Thanksgiving,” said Barbara, “plus, he
made it affordable for us. And if we were
getting items that looked suspect to him
for some reason, he would always tell me
to double check it – he didn’t have to
do that.”
Matt Miller, of Anderson Ferry Food,
commented that “he is a genuinely
authentic, decent person – always goes
above and beyond to help the agencies.
It took me a few years, but we all
eventually learned that his bark is a lot
worse than his bite.”

Generous Major Gifts Support Programs and Client Needs
Despite continued economic
challenges, generous gifts and grants to
the Freestore Foodbank enabled us to
continue and, in some cases, even expand
our support to those in need over the past
year. Gifts from these donors and many
others have provided funding for our
emergency food programs in the face of a
drought and declining food donations; fed
chronically hungry children in our schools
and provided housing, enrollment in
public benefits and stability to the lives
of thousands of families.
The Freestore Foodbank received
$250,000 from the Beverly Hersh
Trust. Beverly Hersh passed away
in 2005 at age 93. During her life
she traveled the world but her true
passion was to help others. Beverly
Hersh recognized
that there were
so many people
in the Cincinnati
community
who were not as
fortunate as she
was. Her wish for
her estate was to
maximize services
to the needy. Mrs.
Hersh’s gift is being
used to support
the Power Pack
program, supply
food for the elderly, and support the
social services at our Customer
Connection Center.
Donor support for Power Pack has
been remarkable, allowing us to expand
the number of school children who
receive emergency weekend food. We
are grateful to the P&G Fund of The
Greater Cincinnati Foundation for
their generous grant of $50,000 for Power
Packs. The Power Pack program was also
supported with grants from the Farmer
Family Foundation ($40,000), the
Daniel and Susan Pfau Foundation
($40,000), the John A. Schroth
Family Charitable Trust/PNC Bank
($35,000) and The Greater Cincinnati
Foundation ($30,000). The Marge
& Charles Schott Foundation gave
$20,000, the Frank J. & Jacqueline
D. Kloenne Foundation gave $15,000,
and the Charles H. Dater Foundation,
General Mills Foundation and Ethicon
Endo-Surgery each gave $10,000. The
Scripps Howard Foundation granted
$6,000 for Power Pack, and U.S. Bank
and Mercy Health each gave $5,000.
The Jacob G. Schmidlapp Trusts, Fifth
Third Bank, Trustee awarded a grant
of $25,000 for
Power Packs
and $25,000
for our Mobile
Food Pantry
program.

their gift of

Unrestricted grants to the Freestore
Foodbank provide us with flexibility
to put funding where it’s needed, grow
successful programs and respond to
emergencies. When a tornado struck our
eastern counties last March, the Mobile
Food Pantry delivered emergency supplies
to neighbors who had lost their homes.
Unrestricted gifts were provided by
the Robert and Adele Schiff Family
Foundation ($50,000), the Namaste
Foundation ($50,000), Meshewa
Farm Foundation ($35,000) the H.B.,
E.W. and F.R. Luther Foundation
($30,000) and the E.M. Anderson
Foundation ($20,000).
Major gifts were received to help
us meet the challenge presented
by the drought from SC Ministry
Foundation ($15,000) the Andrew
Jergens Foundation via The Greater
Cincinnati Foundation ($10,000), and
the MH Foundation ($3,250).
Our special thanks go to The Carol
Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr./ US
Bancorp Foundation for generous
support for the Giving Fields ($50,000),
their continued support of our social
services department ($38,000); and their
gift of $20,000 to provide job training and
placement for veterans at the Rosenthal
Community Kitchen (Cincinnati Cooks).
Agrium US, Inc. also provided a gift of
$6,000 for the Giving Fields.
Our Cincinnati Cooks and Second
Course culinary arts training programs
were also supported with a generous
gift from Lois and Dick Rosenthal
($60,000), a challenge gift from Marilyn
and Mike Kremzar ($25,000), and
grants from MH
Foundation
($7,000)
and Frisch’s
Restaurants
($8,000).
The Freestore
Foodbank is
providing services to
our growing senior
population with a grant from the Health
Foundation of Greater Cincinnati
($20,000). Mobile Food Pantry services
to seniors were supported by a grant
from the Helen Steiner Rice Fund of
The Greater Cincinnati Foundation
($10,000). An award from the Louise
Taft Semple Foundation ($20,000) is
helping us purchase a new pantry truck
this year.
Each year, tens of thousands of
our neighbors come to the Customer
Connection Center on Liberty Street to
find help with housing, public benefits,
emergency clothing, and referral for
medical and mental health services. Our
Client Services was supported by generous
grants from the Sutphin Family
Foundation ($10,000), the Spaulding
Foundation ($9,000) and the MH
Foundation ($2,000). n

Freestore Foodbank
Foundation Board 2012
A Message from the Board Chair
There is no doubt that 2012 was a year of challenges: the economy, a slow
recovery, and the growing numbers of people needing services and especially
our services. Then the drought arrived presenting a new obstacle. At a time of
declining food donations, the drought meant that food didn’t get harvested – a
different challenge with no less dire consequences.
Declining donations means that we are buying more food to meet demand.
As with everything else these days, food costs more. The Freestore Foodbank is
working hard to meet the growing needs through better planning; more efficient
technologies and new business models that help us accomplish more with less.
We’ve consolidated and streamlined the business of service. This means fewer
people are delivering more services and more food. Better methods can do a lot to
bridge that gap between what we have and what we might hope for.
Looking ahead, it is clear that 2013 will be a year of challenge as well. Every
day we read about the difficulties in Washington, the budget, the debt, the Farm
Bill. The obstacles seem endless. One thing is certain; government will be playing
a greatly reduced role in supporting our communities. As government at all levels
leaves the emergency food and social services arena, non-profit agencies must
step up. We are being challenged to raise more money – and find ways to generate
it ourselves.
Cincinnati has a long tradition of coming forward to assist those who are in
need. It is part of the history of our community. That history isn’t a thing of the
past. It continues to this day and the generosity of Cincinnatians is a living legacy
in a living city. It happens through our service organizations and churches and it
lives in the corporations and private citizens who answer the call from non-profit
organizations like the Freestore Foodbank.
Our Annual Report shows the results of a year of hard work and success. More
people have been served. More food has been placed on more tables, more children
have received emergency food assistance over the weekend and access to public
benefits has increased.
A year ago I wrote that we had to work smarter and better. We’ve been doing it.
Today, the role of the non-profit organization is growing. We are meeting greater
challenges in more places and helping more people. There have been difficulties
to overcome and lessons learned. None of the things we’ve accomplished could
happen without our supporters. Many of you have been our loyal donors for years;
others have just joined us and are already planning what they can do next year.
If organizations like the Freestore Foodbank are becoming
the “social safety net” for our neighbors in need, our donors
are the rope that forms the net. We thank you for your past,
present and future support.

The New Faces of Poverty in Southern Ohio
By Former U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt, Ohio’s Second Congressional
District. Printed in the Clermont Sun on November 29, 2012
I was among about 300 people who volunteered
November 21 to pack food for the needy and help them
carry it out of the Freestore Foodbank in Cincinnati’s
Over-the-Rhine neighborhood.
Among the folks I assisted were several grandmothers,
who smiled as they spoke of how busy they’ll be cooking
Thanksgiving meals for the adorable children who bless
their lives. I’m a grandma, too, and my heart goes out
to such impoverished families.
I also helped a
disabled mom from the
West Side, who said she
lost her job last year and
hasn’t been able to find
a new one. It was the
first time she had stood
in line at the Freestore
Foodbank for the annual
Thanksgiving food
distribution, which she
learned about through
a TV news report. She
found that she qualified
to receive food, and she
told me how grateful
she was.
She had come
downtown with a
neighbor, a 25-year-old
Marine Corps veteran
who served overseas
but hasn’t been able
to find a job since
returning to the States.
It was also the first time
he had visited the Freestore Foodbank.
These are among the new faces of poverty in Southern
Ohio. They are normal people who have fallen on hard
times. This is a profound statement about what is going on
in our country.
I’ve been involved with volunteer efforts to help feed
those less fortunate for about 20 years. Never before have
I witnessed such great need. Unless our economy turns
around, the number of such people will continue to grow –
through no fault of their own.
As a former member of Congress, I recognize the need
to get our federal budget under control. As government
resources decline, the need for volunteers will increase.
If not for about 900 volunteers who helped out at
the Freestore Foodbank over the three days before

Thanksgiving, this food distribution wouldn’t have been
possible. Among them were young men in St. Xavier High
School shirts, a business executive who toted heavy bags
despite her high heels, and retired men and women.
About 10,000 local families benefited. Each got a
turkey or chicken, rice or stuffing, canned vegetables,
fresh potatoes, Ohio apples, and some type of dessert.
I was told most of the needy who lined up in the cold
before the doors opened live in Hamilton County or
Northern Kentucky. But the impact of this annual
effort reaches much of Southern Ohio.
While based in
Hamilton County, the
Freestore Foodbank helps
people in 20 counties
through food pantries,
including residents of
Clermont County, Brown
County, Adams County,
Scioto County, and
Pike County.
Last year, the Freestore
Foodbank gave away
about 20 million pounds
of food, said Kurt L.
Reiber, president and
chief executive officer.
About 5 million pounds
of that food came from
the U.S. Department
of Agriculture. About 3
million more pounds of
food came from the Ohio
Department of Job and
Family Services. Much of
the rest was purchased by
the Freestore Foodbank
with donations from caring people – including those who
work at local businesses. The food that comes from the
U.S. Department of Agriculture is bought from American
farmers. This is done largely to maintain stability in the
prices of crops and livestock, but it also obviously benefits
needy people.
Agriculture is the number one industry in Ohio.
Farming is a unique business because of the unpredictability
of weather. The recently extended Farm Bill ensures
we manage the risk for farmers so we don’t lose our
food supply.
I served on the House Agriculture Committee, and
I believe we have a responsibility to ensure that America
has the safest and most stable food supply in the world.
I hope the need is obvious to everyone. n

The Power of a Power Pack
On a Friday afternoon, two girls walk down the street, singing, and barge through
their front door. Seven-year-old Hallie and 10-year-old Riley plop down on the floor
and excitedly pull Power Packs out of their book bags. They sort through the bags
of food and instantly pick out cartons of cereal, which they are quick to mention is
their favorite.
“They really, really help so much,” says Riley, when asked about the Power Packs.
“We just love them,” Hallie chimes in with a bright smile.
The girls and their four older siblings started receiving Power Packs a few years
ago, shortly after their dad died suddenly from a heart attack. Power Packs are bags of
nutritional, easy to prepare food that go home with students on Friday afternoon for
the weekend. The Freestore Foodbank provides nearly 4,000 Power Packs each week
to students in need in the Tri-State through 92 participating schools.
Three years ago, Hallie and Riley’s mom, Angela, would have never imagined
needing help putting food on the table for her children. Prior to her husband passing
away, Angela’s family was stable and food secure. Now, the Power Packs provide the
extra food to ensure that Hallie and Riley have enough food over the weekend.
“The Power Packs mean that I know my children will have something filling and nutritious on the weekends and sometimes
even during the week.”
Despite the trials life has dealt these children, all are receiving Power Packs and doing extraordinarily well in school. Angela
and her family are extremely thankful for the Power Pack program and to those who donate to make the program possible.
“It’s reassuring knowing that they’ll each bring one home on Friday,” Angela says. “It means that they’re guaranteed to get
something filling and nutritious. We rely on the Power Packs right now – this is truly a blessing.” n
Bowls Turned
for Kids Cafe
This past November, hundreds of local
potters and families joined together for
the Clay Alliance’s annual Empty Bowls
event to raise awareness and support
for the Freestore Foodbank’s Kids Cafe
program. Guests enjoyed live music
while they made their way through the
simulated soup kitchen in Pendleton’s
Bell Event Center. Tables overflowed
with handcrafted bowls that were made
for each guest to take home.
Outside, members of the Clay Alliance
demonstrated throwing techniques,
pottery decorating, and even hosted a
kid’s corner for young artists to make
their own masterpieces. Guests picked
up plenty of exquisite, handmade
“seconds” pieces for their collections. The
afternoon was a great success raising over
$23,000 for our Kids Cafe program. n
Operation
Dough-Nation
Panera Bread raises up to $2,000 per
month for Power Pack as part of their
Operation Dough-Nation initiative. On
January 21, 2013, they presented a check
to the Power Pack program on Fountain
Square at Make a Difference Day. We are
so pleased to have this partnership with
Panera Bread which helps feed hundreds
of children each weekend. n

What will be your legacy?
Kathy Greenberg,
Major and Planned Gifts Officer
While many donors support the Freestore Foodbank in our immediate goal of providing
food assistance to people in need, some look ahead to providing ongoing support in the
fight against hunger. One way to help is by establishing a charitable bequest, which not
only strengthens the Freestore Foodbank’s efforts to provide nutritious food to those in
need but also enables us to develop innovative programs so we can continue to serve more
effectively and efficiently.
Providing nutritious food to people in need is not just about good health, it is about
food, connection and hope. Your gift can truly be “food” for life, ensuring that thousands
of people in our community – seniors, adults and children – will not go hungry. With
a little planning today, you can leave a legacy that will continue to fight hunger in our
community for years to come.
Tom and Kathy Kahle
Leadership is the gift of sacrifice for the benefit of another, and legacy
is the inheritance you create for those who follow. Legacy leadership is
possible when you operate outside of comfort . . . pushing yourself toward
dreams that are bigger. Tom and Kathy Kahle embody that commitment
and have been authentic and intentional while creating their legacy.
I recently sat down with Tom and Kathy Kahle and asked them how
they would like to be remembered. Tom and Kathy’s response was that
they have a strong sense of commitment to the Cincinnati community
and they want that to be their legacy. They came to Cincinnati as a young
married couple and were fortunate to be able to stay here as they raised
Tom and Kathy in ‘Hank,’ her yarn boutique in Hyde Park.
their three children.
Growing up in Toledo, Tom’s home was open to anyone who needed a meal. His mother would always feed people and
there was always an extra plate at the table with plenty of food to go around. Tom recalls how his mother used food to make a
connection to their neighbors in need, and he saw the hope in their eyes as they shared a meal. Modeling his mother’s sense of
connecting with others, Tom has always believed that food is a basic need and without it people can’t work and kids can’t learn.
There is no circumstance or action that justifies hunger. Simply put . . . Hunger is Unacceptable!
Over 20 years ago, Tom connected with the mission of the Freestore Foodbank when another board member, Bob Edwards,
asked him to join the board. Tom agreed because he saw how food had made an impact on the people in his life and the issue
of hunger resonated with him. Through the years, Tom has taken on many roles including serving as Board Chair for two
years, working on the Rubber Duck Regatta committee since its beginning, and leading the effort to establish the Freestore
Foodbank’s Foundation. Other than their church, the Freestore Foodbank is the longest volunteer involvement Tom has had,
and through that involvement he has witnessed the hope provided by the Freestore Foodbank to our community.
Cincinnati has been good to the Kahle family and now that their children are established, Tom and Kathy would like to give
back to the community that they have called home. Their children understand the importance for their parents to make gifts
through their estate so that they will continue to support organizations that they have been connected to in our community.
Tom said, “When Kathy and I decided that we wanted to do something meaningful and positive as our legacy, we talked about
what had shaped our lives and how important a charitable gift would be to an organization. We chose charities that have
impacted our lives and are consistent and reflective of the values that we strongly believe in. The Freestore Foodbank has
made a tremendous impact in the community, is administratively efficient, always has been an outstanding performer and
our belief is that everyone should be free of hunger. Those are true motivators for us and that is why we believe in the
Freestore Foodbank.”
Tom and Kathy’s legacy…their gift…will enable their commitment to our community to live on through the great work
of the Freestore Foodbank, so that our neighbors in need will continue to receive the Food – Connection – Hope to move
towards self-reliance. n
