2008 Long Island University Lacrosse
Season Outlook
The Long Island University lacrosse team has made strides as it heads into just its sixth year of existence. With
a group of 16 letterwinners returning and the addition of another talented crop of newcomers, head coach Regan
Teti has the team poised to make a run at its first Northeast Conference tournament berth. Last season’s squad
set a program-record for victories, but that is not enough to satisfy Teti and her squad.
“We will be a very balanced attacking unit,” Teti said when asked what to expect of her squad. “Our defenders
are tenacious and aggressive as well and after working with [strength and conditioning coach] Richard James I
look forward to watching people try to catch up with us. Our freshman class is outstanding and each one of them
possesses the potential to be an impact player for our team. They are pushing each other incredibly hard.”
“We are aiming to set another record for wins, but we have much higher expectations for ourselves than that,”
Teti said. “Our goal is to make it to the NEC tournament for the first time in the program’s history and continue
from there. We are ready to turn some heads in the lacrosse world.”
Attack
The Blackbirds will have to find a way to replace Amy Rizzo, the program’s all-time leading scorer, on the
offensive end. Despite the loss of a four-time all-conference honoree in Rizzo, Teti returns plenty of experience
up top in senior Sam Fischbeck, junior Allison Funk, as well as sophomore Christie Wienckowski. With a
Kristina Scheerer
focus on improved shot selection and distribution of the ball, Teti feels that the LIU attack could be difficult for
opponents to slow down.
Fischbeck and Funk have both garnered experience in the starting lineup during their first two seasons in Brooklyn. Fischbeck is an active player
off the ball and will be looked upon to set up teammates for goals. Funk has improved steadily during her three
seasons at LIU and has become a reliable finisher. She continued her development last year, finishing with 17
goals and five assists, while starting every game.
Wienckowski ranked third on the team in scoring as a rookie and has dramatically improved her shot selection,
which should lead to a stronger all-around game from her this season.
“With the absence of Rizzo we are going to be incredibly balanced and tough to zone in on,” Teti said. “Each
attacker has a different strength that they will bring to the table.”
The Blackbirds’ attack will be bolstered by the addition of freshmen Gabrielle Gorbey and Annie Kalata.
Gorbey brings outstanding vision and distribution as a low attacker, while Kalata possesses a strong, accurate shot
and has shown an aggressive attacking mentality.
Midfield
In the midfield, LIU will have to replace all-conference performer Jackie McCormick, who led the team with
24 assists and finished second on the team with 55 points and 31 goals. The Blackbirds will turn to sophomore
captain Kristina Scheerer to anchor the midfield. Sophomore Jillian Maricondo is the other returnee with
experience, as Teti hopes to have her team play a fast and scrappy style in the middle.
Scheerer was named a team captain after enjoying a standout rookie campaign. She ranked fourth on the team
Allison Funk
in scoring with 27 points on 25 goals and two assists. Scheerer excels at both ends of the field and has the instincts
to find herself around the ball at all times.
“Kristina genuinely loves playing and has proven to be a leader of our team,” Teti said. “She is constantly giving positive encouragement and I
expect her to give our freshman confidence and continue to inspire our team.”
Maricondo started all 17 games as a freshman and has shown the desire to improve upon her rookie campaign. She spent time training with the
track and field team, which should help her make an impact this spring.
A trio of newcomers will compete for time as well in the midfield. Sophomore Jenna Schauder missed last season with an injury, but used the time
on the sidelines to improve her understanding of the game and decision-making on the field. Her athleticism will be a positive addition to the lineup.
Freshman Sarah James, who owns a hard shot and outstanding speed, comes from one of the top high school teams in Pennsylvania and will be ready
to contribute immediately. Fellow newcomer Sara LaNoir has both an outstanding work ethic and vision, which will be an asset in the midfield.
Defense
Long Island’s defense will be anchored by senior captain Xiomara Garcia. A three-year starter, Garcia has
been one of the team’s steadiest performers. Her tough, gritty mentality helped Garcia rank second on the team
last season with 41 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers.
“Xiomara is a warrior, literally, and a force to be reckoned with,” Teti said. “The entire team looks to Xio for
inspiration and motivation. She was a freshman my first year here, so she has seen the program develop since
its infancy and knows what I expect of the team.”
Rounding out the returning defenders are sophomores Ilana Bernstein, Revay Corbett, Danielle Laird and
Jenae’ Piper. Bernstein was a starter last season and will look to improve on a solid season. She is intelligent
and has good natural instincts on the field. Laird saw action in eight games last year and is a vocal presence
in the back, who should be ready to take a larger role this year. Corbett played in five games and brings an
intensity to the field that will benefit the Blackbirds. Piper is a two-sport athlete with solid field sense.
Sophomore Felicia Reynolds will join the lacrosse squad after playing with the women’s soccer team at LIU.
Her poise and awareness will help the young squad. LIU also welcomes freshmen Desirée Dabrowski and
Kimberly Bostwick. Dabrowski is a skilled player that will add speed to the defense. Bostwick handle the LIU
goalie duties and has shown the instincts to compete at this level. According to Teti, she has the right attitude
and approach to the game expecting to be nothing short of the best on the field.

•Fourth Season
Rutgers, 1999
Regan Teti commences her fourth season at the helm of the women’s lacrosse program at Long Island
University. The young coach has assembled a squad of young and talented student-athletes that has
the Blackbirds’ program building a foundation for success in the Northeast Conference.
Last season, Teti led a talented, but young, Blackbirds squad to a program-record for wins. The
youthful squad showed flashes of brilliance, setting a team record with 24 goals in a win over Howard.
For the third straight season, Teti had two players earn all-conference honors with seniors Amy Rizzo
and Jackie McCormick being named All-NEC Second Team.
In just the program’s fourth season of existence, Teti took the Blackbirds to within a game of advancing
to their first ever NEC Tournament in 2006. The season showed how competitive the program has
become as her squad set team records in every statistical category.
While at LIU, Teti has built a successful foundation in every facet of the program. The Blackbirds
have been recognized for their success in the classroom in each of the last two seasons, having been
honored by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association for having a team GPA over
a 3.0. Her athletes have also been honored for their work in the classroom by being named to the
IWLCA Division I Academic Honor Roll and the NEC Academic Honor Roll. On the recruiting trail,
The Teti File
she signed the program’s first early-signee class in November 2005 and has brought in eight recruits
each of the last two seasons.
Year
Overall/NEC
Teti came to Long Island after serving as the first assistant at Boston College during the 2003 season.
2005 .............................................4-10/3-5
She helped guide the Eagles to a 9-6 record, the program’s first winning season in recent history and
2006 .............................................5-12/3-5
a fifth-place mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Teti gained head coaching experience at Bedford
2007 .............................................6-11/3-5
High School in Massachusetts, where she guided the varsity squad in the 2002 season. While in
Totals (three seasons) ....15-33/9-15
Massachusetts, she also worked as an instructor at MetroLacrosse, a non-profit organization that is
dedicated to bringing lacrosse to under-served Boston communities.
During the summer of 2005, Teti was selected as head coach of the U.S. East All-Stars, a team comprised of athletes from all three NCAA Divisions,
which included former LIU standout Amy Rizzo. The all-stars competed in the International Friendship Games held in Edogawa, Japan. She has also had the
opportunity to coach with the Liberty Lacrosse program on Long Island, which is directed by four-time World Cup participant and lacrosse legend, Danielle
Gallagher. Teti also represented New England in 2003 as part of the women’s division at the National Tournament held each year in Lehigh, Pa., where she
played alongside and against collegiate and post-collegiate lacrosse players.
The Devon, Pa., native was a four-year letterwinner at Rutgers from 1996-99. She led the Scarlet Knights to postseason all four years, including the school’s
first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1999. Rutgers was ranked 11th in the nation that season and Teti captained a defense that posted the lowest goals
against average in the NCAA. Teti holds the Scarlet Knights’ single-game record with seven caused turnovers and is third in the school’s single-season annals
with 40 caused turnovers in 1999.
Teti married Rob Marscher in Oct. 2006 and they have a daughter, Maryn.
~~ Q and A with Coach Teti ~~
Entering your fourth season as head coach what progress have you seen
the team make and what goals do you have for the future?
Each year this program has hit some sort of milestone and each year
there has been more growth and success. With the exception of Xiomara
[Garcia] who was a freshman when I arrived at LIU, every one of these
kids was recruited by me so they understand what is expected of them and
are thrilled to be a part of this. They take great pride in knowing they are
contributing to our success. As for the future, our goal is to make it to the
NCAA tournament.
How has the addition of Heather Levins and Amy Rizzo, as well as
having Jessie Donohoue back, helped the coaching staff and team as
you all work towards a successful season?
Overall I think that the chemistry between the four of us is amazing.
There is an exceptional balance among our very different personalities, and
it is obvious the girls enjoy working their hardest for us.
Heather’s addition has been crucial to our success, as well as proving
the commitment by LIU and its athletics department to the success of
our lacrosse program. She brings great ideas to the table and has amazing
experience as a coach. She keeps the office in order and has become our
recruiting coordinator so that helps with our workflow. We are able to really
zone in on our players’ needs.
Having Riz around has been beneficial. She provides the link between the
players and the coaches and is excited to be working with our team from
the other side.
Jessie’s return is great as well because the kids are comfortable with her and
we went through a lot of learning together last year.
What has it been like coaching a team that is so geographically diverse
and is overwhelmingly made up of undersclassmen?
I enjoy working with kids from all over the country because they bring
different styles to the playing field. I believe that the best team is a creative
team, so it’s great to be able to mesh their styles together to form something
unique. As for working with underclassmen, it’s awesome! They are
hysterical kids with big hearts and it has been a pleasure working with them
so far.
With so many returning players from last season’s squad, what
improvements have you seen heading into the 2008 season?
What stands out more than anything are increased confidence levels and
a ton of game experience. Many of our players played every minute last
season and that is really going to help our competitiveness this year.

Heather Levins
Assistant Coach•
•First Season
Connecticut, 2003
Heather Levins joins the Blackbirds lacrosse team for her first season as the full-time assistant coach. Levins will assist head coach Regan
Teti in all aspects of the program. She brings an impressive resume to LIU as a coach in the club, high school and collegiate ranks.
“Heather’s addition to our staff is one of the best accomplishments of this program so far,” Teti said. “Not only does she bring a wealth
of coaching and playing experience to LIU lacrosse, her positive attitude and vibrant personality will fit in with the make-up of the team. I
have no doubt that she will help us achieve our goals.”
Levins comes to LIU after serving as an assistant coach at Bucknell University since 2004. At Bucknell, Levins was a recruiting coordinator
and assisted in the planning of practices. She also worked as an academic advisor for the team and coordinated game tape exchange.
In addition to her experience at Bucknell, Levins has built a coaching resume at the high school and club lacrosse level. She served as the
head junior varsity coach at Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, N.Y., for one season. Along with her duties as the head coach at the
JV level, she also assisted the coaching staff at the varsity level during the conference championship tournament. Levins has also worked as
an assistant coach for the Long Island Yellow Jackets club team, while working at the Laxology/Increase Camp at Hofstra University and
the Bainbridge Elite 100 camp held in Bainbridge Island, Wash.
Levins is a 2003 graduate of the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. While an undergraduate with the
Huskies, Levins enjoyed a standout career with the women’s lacrosse team. Levins ranks among the career leaders at UConn with 97 points
on 75 goals and 22 assists. She also collected 143 groundballs, which ranks fifth on the career list.
Jessie Donohoue
Graduate Assistant Coach•
•Second Season
UC Davis, 2004
Jessie Donohoue returns to Long Island University as a graduate assistant coach for her second season. She will assist head coach Regan
Teti and assistant coach Heather Levins in the day-to-day operations of the team, including practice, recruiting and scouting.
Donohoue came to Long Island after serving as an assistant coach for her alma mater, UC Davis, during the 2005 season. As an assistant
at UC Davis, Donohoue assisted in all aspects of the program and helped the Aggies to a 10-9 record.
A member of the Aggies from 2000-04, Donohoue served as a captain during her senior season. She enjoyed a successful career year as a
senior with a personal-best 25 goals and ranked among team leaders in ground balls and draw controls. Donohoue graduated among the
career leaders in ground balls (119). She received a bachelor’s degree in communications at UC Davis.
“Jessie is an invaluable addition to our staff,” head coach Regan Teti said. “She has exactly the right attitude and work ethic necessary to
help us reach our goals. She expects nothing less than the best from each one of our players.”
Amy Rizzo
Volunteer Assistant Coach•
•First Season
Long Island, 2007
Amy Rizzo joins the Long Island University lacrosse staff after concluding a standout career as a student-athlete for LIU. Rizzo is the most
decorated Blackbird in the program’s history, having competed for the team from 2004-07.
The school’s all-time leading scorer, Rizzo was a four-time All-Northeast Conference selection, earning first team honors in both 2004
and 2006. Rizzo finished her career with 249 points on 185 goals and 64 assists. A dominating offensive player, she has four of the top five
single-season goal scoring totals at LIU. Rizzo was a three-time honoree as the NEC Player of the Week, as well as a Rookie of the Week on
one occasion.
An NEC Academic Honor Roll member as an undergraduate, Rizzo is currently pursuing her master’s degree in business administration
at LIU. She also played for the Blackbirds’ women’s soccer team during the 2007 season.

Northeast Conference
2008 Long Island University Lacrosse
Since its inception in 1981, the Northeast
Conference has charted a course of steady
growth that continues to this day. Now
entering its 27th year, the NEC remains
committed to the original principles the
conference was founded upon - academic
integrity and development, athletic achievement, community
outreach and good sportsmanship - while capitalizing on opportunities
to build its reputation both regionally and nationally.
When the Northeast Conference was first established as the
ECAC-Metro Conference back in 1981, the league’s founders had
one simple goal in mind: to create a competitive Division I men’s
basketball conference for unaffiliated schools on the Eastern
seaboard. A single-sport entity at its inception, even the league’s
most ardent supporters during its formative years could not have
envisioned a transformation into a burgeoning 11-member, 21-sport
conference. The remarkable success story of the conference began
to unfold in 1985, when the league began sponsoring additional
sports. Three years later, a change of name was in order and the
Northeast Conference as we know it today was born. With
membership and sport sponsorship continuing to grow over the
next decade and beyond, the NEC now enjoys qualification or
play-in access to 13 different NCAA Championships (baseball,

Monmouth (admitted in 1985), Mount St. Mary’s (1989), Central
Connecticut State (1997), Quinnipiac (1998) and Sacred Heart
(1999). NEC expansion, which culminated in 1999 with the
addition of Sacred Heart, has given the league a five-state geographic
footprint with access to such major media markets as New York City,
Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Hartford.
With the addition of four sports in the last decade, NEC
member institutions now compete in 21 championship sports:
baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross

Dr. David Steinberg
President
Dr. David Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, was appointed April 1, 1985. During his tenure, the University has experienced a
renaissance becoming one of the largest and most comprehensive private universities in the United States. Under his leadership, the University’s
endowment has increased nearly tenfold from $4.8 million to over $80 million, and its enrollment has risen from 19,000 to over 28,500. He has spearheaded
a capital improvement plan, which has led to $400 million in investments in new construction and major renovations, resulting in vast improvements in the
quality of study and life on each of the University’s campuses, especially, the C.W. Post and Brooklyn Campuses. New doctoral programs have been added and
operating reserves have been created and increased.
Born in New York City, Dr. Steinberg, is the son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue. He was educated at Phillips
Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England, and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright
year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he received both
a master’s in East Asian Studies (1963) and a Ph.D. in History (1964). Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees. He began his teaching career
in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis
University as Executive Assistant to the President, becoming Vice President and University Secretary in 1977.
The author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this
important area of the world for four decades. His first book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “The
Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its fourth edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, Nicholas Platt, as “the best
single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present. “Dr. Steinberg also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast
Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. He recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “The Emergence of Modern
Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. He is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays
on State, Society and Public Creeds,” 2005.
Gale Stevens Haynes
Provost
“I am a big dreamer,” says Gale Stevens Haynes, Provost of Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus and an exemplary educator, lawyer and role model.
“If you don’t dream, nothing ever changes.”
As head of a doctoral-granting institution, Provost Haynes has achieved many of her dreams both as an educator and a parent. Today, she
oversees one of the most diverse campuses in the country, with more than 11,000 students, managing an annual budget of over $150
million.Provost Haynes has led her institution through a remarkable renaissance: doubling student enrollment, creating new facilities, diversifying
faculty, forging links with the community and transforming the Campus into a vibrant urban academic center. One of the Provost’s visions
– a modern performing arts center for the students and the community – became a reality in 2005. The centerpiece of the new complex is the woodpaneled, 320-seat Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts, where cutting-edge and traditional dance, music and theater performances regularly draw
standing-room-only crowds from the Campus and the surrounding region.
In 2006, under the Provost’s leadership, the Campus completed the biggest building project in its history: the $45 million Wellness, Recreation
and Athletic Center. With state-of-the-art fitness and aquatic facilities for students and other members of the Campus, the WRAC also features an
outstanding, 2,500-seat venue, open to the public for athletic and civic events. Its Harriet Rothkopf Heilbrunn ’32 Academic Nursing Center offers an
extensive array of free preventive health services as well as a home for Brooklyn’s first Lupus outreach and education office, all in service to the entire
community. A wider array of wellness services, including special cluster of intervention programs addressing asthma and lead poisoning in children, are planned
to begin in 2007. In recent months, the Provost also has overseen a dramatic re-landscaping that has nearly tripled the green space for the central campus,
with native plants and amenities that create a serene environment and enhance the “college experience” on this urban campus.
Involved in higher education for three decades, Provost Haynes began her association with the Brooklyn Campus as a student, earning a bachelor’s degree in
English and a master’s degree in counseling. She started her career as director of the Higher Education Opportunity Program. Upon completing her law degree
at St. John’s University in 1983, she became Long Island University’s legal counsel before assuming the position of Provost in 1989.
A Queens, N.Y., native, Provost Haynes grew up with a love of books and the spoken word, which she attributes to her West Indian heritage. She has passed
on that love of learning to her three daughters – a doctor, a lawyer and an educator – whom she raised as a divorced single parent. “Parenting is a training
ground for being a good CEO,” she maintains. Acting on her belief that a sound education is the key to realizing one’s dreams, Provost Haynes is dedicated
to creating an urban campus whose varied pathways help students to realize theirs.

2008 Long Island University Lacrosse
John Suarez
Director of Athletics
John Suarez enters his 11th year as director of athletics at Long Island University, where he has overseen a dramatic growth of the school’s
ahletic department. During his tenure, Suarez has witnessed a sensational rise in the Blackbirds’ on-field success with 23 Northeast Conference
championships and 20 NEC Coach of the Year awards. Under his guidance, Long Island captured its first-ever NEC Women’s Commissioner’s
Cup in 2006.
Academic success has also been a priority in Suarez’s tenure, as witnessed by the department’s cumulative 3.02 grade-point average following
the 2006-07 season. It was the sixth consecutive year that the department’s cumulative GPA was above 3.0. In addition, LIU was cited with
two National Graduation Awards, sponsored by USA Today, in the last six years.
Suarez has also spearheaded the department as it has made major improvements to its facilties. The 2006 opening of the Wellness, Recreation
and Athletic Center culminated a decade of facility improvement at the Brooklyn Campus. The $45 million facility houses as 2,500-seat
arena, an NCAA regulation-size swimming pool and a state-of-the-art fitness center. The WRAC also features a wellness center that is geared
toward a growing Brooklyn community.
The Wellness Center came on the heels of other improvements that included the addition of lights to LIU Field in 1999, Field Turf in 2001
and bleachers for softball and baseball in 2003. Suarez has also overseen upgrades to the weight room, locker rooms and scoreboards.
Suarez’s work is not done, as there are plans to further upgrade to the Blackbirds’ facilities, including an extensive redesign of LIU Field and
the addition of a bubble atop the Wellness Center, covering the track and tennis courts.
With a keen eye toward the future, Suarez has been mindful of LIU’s past. He helped spearhead the creation of the LIU
Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 with 11 inaugural members, as well as the reestablishment of the Blackbird Club in 2002.
Suarez has also continued to make his presence felt outside the downtown Brooklyn campus. He served on the NCAA
Management Council from 2003-06 and was a member of the Division I Budget Committee from 2004-06. Prior to that, Suarez was
on the NCAA Championship Cabinet from 2000-03 and served as chair of the NEC Athletic Directors Committee from 2000-02.
Suarez arrived following a three-year stint as athletics director at Mercer County College in Trenton, N.J., which won two national
championships and produced 11 regional titles in that span. Eighty percent of the athletes in his time attended four-year schools and every
team produced a winning record during his last two years.
Suarez earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he competed on the baseball team. He completed
his master’s in sports management at East Stroudsburg University.

The campus’ athletic training staff is dedicated to the prevention, rehabilitation and recovery needs of over 200 student-athletes for the school’s
17 athletic teams. Headed by three full-time athletic trainers, the staff consists of several graduate and undergraduate trainers who are enrolled
in LIU’s renowned athletic training program.
Because of the extreme availability of the training program’s resources, great attention and detail is placed on each athlete in order to provide
the best care and best specific plan to ensure the athlete’s long-range health goals are met.
In the winter of 2005, a state-of-the-art athletic training room opened in the lower level of the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic and Center.
It is fully equipped with the latest modalities and rehabilitation equipment in taking care of the needs of Blackbird athletes.
The Wellness Center also houses resources and programs to promote the health of community residents. Cardiac
rehabilitation, orthopedic therapy and asthma education services are available. In addition, the facility features specialized equipment, such as a
separate therapy pool equipped with a hydraulic floor. In addition to providing treatment and rehabilation, the athletic training staff provides
education to student-athletes regarding health matters and concerns in order to aid students in achieving optimum health and conditioning.
Athletic Training/Strength and Conditioning
Danny O’Connor
The sports medicine program is under the direction of Danny O’Connor, who was promoted to head trainer in 2000. O’Connor, who
started with LIU as a graduate student in 1994, is responsible for maintaining the operation of the athletic training room. His duties also
include the coordination of medical coverage and the administering of the athletic department’s drug education and testing program. He also
is in charge of scheduling appointments with the program’s physician, coordinating preseason physical exams and designing treatment and
rehabilitation programs.
O’Connor consults regularly with athletic department orthopedic surgeon Dr. Howard Levy, a doctor of orthopedic surgery and sportsmedicine
at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. Levy and a network of medical staff, mostly from Lenox Hill, work closely with LIU athletes for
their surgical and rehabilitative needs.
Richard James
Strength and Conditioning Coach
The strength and conditioning program at Long Island University is designed to help student-athletes maximize their athletic potential and
performance while reducing the risk of injury.

workout programs are tailored to enhance athletes’ physical abilities in their specific sports, as each sport places different demands on the body.
Included in his regimen are weight training, power and speed training, flexibility training, plyometrics and conditioning.
The weight training room is located in the new state-of-the art Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center. The facility houses not only a fitness
center equipped with the latest equiment - from stationary bikes with built in televisions to a full weight station - but also a separate weight
room especially geared for student-athletes.
There is a full range of equipment to meet the diverse needs of each student-athlete from preseason conditioning to the offseason variety.
Treadmills and stationary bikes, free weights and press machines are just some of the pieces of equipment which make it one of the most
complete facilities in the Northeast Conference.

Academics
Nora Mavashev
Academic Enhancement Coordinator
The balancing of academic achievement and athletic success is the primary concern of LIU’s Department of Athletics. The University’s
student-athlete academic services are designed to help the department fulfill its commitment to all student-athletes in their pursuit of academic
excellence.
At LIU, there is a high priority placed on academic integrity, along with an opportunity to take advantage of extraordinary academic programs.
The goal of the LIU Athletic Department is to give student-athletes an avenue to seek help, whether it be for tutorial assistance, scheduling
of classes, personal or career development or to improve on their test-taking and time-management skills.
In her fourth year, Nora Mavashev is responsible for monitoring academic progress of the student-athletes, ensuring they meet and exceed
the University’s academic goals in compliance with NCAA and institutional standards. In conjunction with the director and senior associate
director of athletics, Mavashev has formed close relationships with the academic advisement office and counseling center to assist the studentathlete in negotiating the demands of daily practices and games.
The athletic department had an overall grade point average this past year of 3.02. In the spring of 2007, eight of the 17 teams posted semester
and cumulative averages above 3.00. For the year, there were 100 student-athletes (51 percent) who had a cumulative GPA above 3.00 and 23
student-athletes (12 percent) with GPAs above 3.50.
The University has twice been recognized by the NCAA and USA Today for having the highest graduation rate in the nation as compared to
the remainder of the student body.
