for Spring Concert
SLUR's annual Fine Arts Concert,
the result of year-long talent development and grueling practices, will begin
this Sunday at 6:30 PM and feature
SLUH's best dancers, singers, and instrumentalists.
To kick off the concert, the Moonlight Jazz Quartet, consisting of seniors
Matt Haffner, Adam Kopff, Dave
O'Leary, and Tim Zavadil, will play a
few choice numbers, including Dave
Brubeck's ever-popular "Take Five."
Most of the remainder of the concert will center around the dancers and
chorus singers, who will perform alternate numbers.

the 70's. First, the sophomores presented
"Billiken's Island," a takeoff of the late
60's and early 70's sitcom "Gilligan's
Island"; then Spring Fling focused on
"seventysomething"; and now thejuniors
will sail on "The Love Boat" for their
Junior Ring Dance.
Preparations are underway for the
dance. Plans for decorations include a
giant replica of the Pacific Princess, the
Pirates' Cove bar, and posters of all the
lovable Love Boat characters--Julie,
Vicki, Gopher, Isaac, and Captain
Steubing.
In addition, uniforms will be purchased for faculty m~mbers so they can
appear as certain characters during the
evening. Father Bailey is rumored to be

appearing as Captain Steubing and Miss

being discussed to · enliven the auditorium, halls, and entrances to the school.
The Dance Planning Commiuee is, to say

named editors .of'89-'.90.PN
Mr. James Ratennan announced yesterday the names of the
editors of next year's Prep News. Chris Brown and Rob Cooper
will be the editors for Volume 54, with Mike Dunne as Assistant
Editor and Chris Boyd, Art Director. ~·r was reatly pleased.with
the skill, judgment, and hard work of these individuals, especially
when they published the paper while the senior staff was on
project," said Mr. Raterman.' "The present year was an exciting
one with all the improvements-and I'm looking forward to next
year to see what it will bring. This past year we went to th~ .
Macintosh system and learned what we could do with the laser
printer. Perhaps next year we will be able to use a a scanner to put
photographs into the paper."
"Most importantly, though, I am confident that the '89-'90
staff will continue the tradition of week-in and week-out coverage of the news of the school."

leading off the evening with "The 'Star-Spangled Banner." Soon
· afterwards, the Concert Chorus will perform its numberS, including "Worried M:an Blues" and ''This Train." ·
Later in the show, Varsity will perform two sets, including
such numbers as "I Want a Girl," "Ray's Rockhouse," and the
specially choreographed song "I Bought Me a·Cat.~· Along with
its musical showcase, Varsity will display its dancing ability in
"Mame," "Walking Cane," and~'Lulu."
Said chorus member Matt Gunn about the uPcoming performance, "Our original intent was to sing nude, but Doc [Koestner) wouldn' t let us. So we had to learn the songs anyway."
Fmaliy the Jazz Band will play a jam-packed half-hour of
music in their last appearance of the year. After an intto by the
rhythm section, the Jazz Band will break into the popular fusion
piece "Biidland." The rest of the band's set will consist of a fair
mixture of swing and power jazz, concluding the concert with an
energy-filled Latin rhythm piece, "On Green Dolphin Street."

Blood Drive collects 133
pints, exceeds goal by 8
With thoughts of free pizza in their
minds and blood to give in their hearts,
droves of students and faculty members
rushed to the auditorium Tuesday for the
final blood drive of the school year. A
total of 133 pints of blood were collected,
surpassing the goal of 125 pints. This
marks the first time the blOQd goal was
exceeded in three attempts this year.
The Red Cross workers started draining SLUH blood from the students and
teachezs around 9:00 AM. Donors were
treated to free Pantera's pizza after giving, an incentive which undoubtedly lured
extra pintS from previous non-givers. The
incentive helped this blooddrivereach its
goal, according to Religious Affairs
Commissioner Ed Barnidge.
Bamidge went on to say that it felt
"good to go out strong"_by reaching the
goal. The only problem was that of nondonors ttying to filch undeserved pizza.
The pizza incentive that put the drive over
the· top will continue at future drives.

second time in a row last S~y at
Hazelwood East. Twe~ve Catholic boy's
teains and several girls' teams ran in the ·

an overwhelming total of 167 points.
· CBC, the second place team, was far
behind with 123 points. The DeSmet
Spartans finished a distant 3rd place with
6lpoints. Vianney took4th(46pts),Cardinal Ritter took 5th.(40 pts), and Prep
Seminary fmished off the top 6 places
with 39 points. This victory marks the
first time SLUH bas ever won the AllCatholic twice consecutively.
Considering that the cold temperatures and high winds made it difficult to
compete, the T-Bills turned in many
impressive performances. The Trackbills
ran away with the overall lead from the
begin~g with a 1st place 4x800m relay
tim~ of 8:~.9'.
Next senior Jim Wessling and junior
Mark Grider gave the competition a 1-2
punch in the 11Om high hurdles. Wessling
not only took 1st, but also shattered the
previous school record by .3 secon4s with ·
his time of 14.6.. Grider finished on
Wessling•s heels with his blazing time of
14.9-the previous school record. Super
sophomore Ray Armstead sped to 1st in
the lOOm dash with a time of 10.8. Half-
In the next event. the 4x200m relay,
the SLUH squad again left their mark
placing 1st in 1:37.0 seconds. Junior
Mickey Luna faced stiff competition in
the 1600m run and took 6th (4:52).
The SLUH 4x100m team took frrst
with a time of 45.8, and in the 400m run
senior Angelo Direeto finished 6th (55 .8).
Wessling again place 1st in the 300m
intermediate hurdles with a time of 41.1.
Senior Brian Lawler fought the wind and
ran a very impressive 800m placing 2nd at
2:08.2.
Armstead placed 5th in the 200m
dash (25.9), and in the 2 mile run Luna
raced to a great 3rd place finish at 10:32.
Freshman Sean Lock placed a very respectable 6th in the 2 mile with a time of
10:51. For SLUH the running events
concluded with a 4th place 4x400m time
of3:43.4.
In the weights events, junior Derrick
Monahan took first. as usual, in the discus
throw with a super fling of 158'8". In the
shot put throw, Monahan threw .a good
2nd place distance of 47' 7".
One surprise of the meet was freshman Tom Tretter who pole vauted to 1st
place with a great vault of 10' 6".
SLUH also dominated the jumping
events. Junior Kevin Flavin flew 40'11S
in the triple jump for 1st, and in the long
jump Aavin took 5th (18'1.5"). Junior
Chuck McCall jumped to 4th place in the
triple jump (38'10.75").
The high point of the jumping events
was when junior Will Kehres leaped a
tremendous record-breaking 6'6" in the
high jump placing Ist.
With this victory under their belt, the
SLUH Trackbills can claim to be the best
Catholic track team in the St. Louis Area.
But the T-:Sills cannot rest on their laurels
for they must now get ready for the challenging district track meet tomorrow at
Lafayette High School. The running
events begin at 12:30.

The SLUH BasebiUs ended the
regular season on a down note, dropping
two of their last three games.
The squad lost 2-1 to a talented
DeSmet club in the fmals of the SLUH
Tournament.
The team rebounded slightly, winning a 5-2 decision in a make-up game
against Northwest Junior Derek Eckelman pitched five innings, struck out ten,
and did not allow a hit
In a rematch against Fon Zumwalt
South, SLUH led 2-0 going into the
bottom of the sixth when Tom Purcell
tired and walked three batters .before
giving up a bases clearing triple to put
Zumwalt up to stay. Zumwalt tallied
another before the inning ended, an~ a
SLUH rally merited only unfulfilled
possibilities, giving Zumwalt a 4-2 revenge win to close out the regular sea- .
son.
.
The_playoffs are now upon the
Basebills, and with a couple of days of
hard practice, the squad (11-8) should be
ready to face the winner of the Vashon/
U. City game. in the second round on
Tuesday. If the team passes that te~t.,
then Wedrtesday the team would face the
other· frrst round winner, which willprobably be CBC.
To fare well in the' playoffs. the
offense, which has been sporadic of late,
needs to revive by having batters taking .
more aggressive cuts and forcing opponents to make defensive miscues. Other
than Todd Standley, the rest of the staners has suffered from a power outage that
must be overcome in order to advance.
Pitching and defense again will be
redeeming qualities. The pitching staff,
led by Tom Purcell and a bullpen of
experienced seniors and improving juniors, along with the sound infield and
outfield, should make SLUH competitive with the other teams in the district
