December - Havasu Stitchers
An Affiliate of the Arizona Quilters Guild
volume 21, Number 12
December 2015
Greetings From the President….
Merry Christmas!
I wish each and every one of you a blessed holiday season. It’s time to reflect
on the year gone by and to visit with family. If you will be traveling this holiday season,
please go safely and consider taking some hand work with you. You will be surprised how
much you can get done when forced to sit in that passenger seat for hours on end!
This last year was a very busy year. The Havasu Stitchers managed to collect 212 members; we had a great time at Quilting at the Lake 2015; most of us got to go to a sewing
camp or two; we had a very successful Quilt Show XI; we had a few resignations; we
brought our vendors closer to us; and we named Sherri Ashford as our 2015 Member of the
Year. And through it all we learned new sewing techniques, created beautiful quilts and
other items, and created new friendships.
This coming year will be a very busy year. January brings us the New Year and Quilting at
the Lake 2016; February brings Spring Frenzy; March marches in with nominations for the
Board of Directors and various committees, plus National Quilting Day; April showers reveal who our new Board will be for the 2016-2017 year; and May is the flowering installation of the new Board. In between all this fun we will be sewing, going to camps, bringing
in national teachers for you to learn from, and most of all just having fun together!
Before this year ends, please focus on your contribution to this guild. It’s not about the
money. It’s about the time spent with friends and colleagues enjoying the thing you have in
common – QUILTING. Make a resolution this year to join a committee or become a leader
and offer your service. Most of our committees are only a weekend event or shorter. I
would also like to see each one of you donate a day of quilting to the guild. We are very
fortunate to have the ability to stand together and create such beautiful items and help our
community.
In closing - I wish you and yours a
Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Sheri Ahrens
Member of the Year
Open Position:
Congratulations to Sherri Ashford, voted
Member of the Year! The Havasu Stitchers agree that
Sherri meets and exceeds the requirements for this
award, since she:
 has given time, talent and energy to the Havasu
Stitchers.
 exemplifies initiative and sustained commitment.
 offers selfless effort in
making a significant
impact.
 is a member of both
AQG and Havasu Stitchers.
In a corporate world the 1st VP is expected to move on to
the office of President. Not in a volunteer world like
ours. Members seem to run away from serving in this
capacity!
Is it the Education part of the job that scares members
away? It shouldn’t be. Look out over the membership. If
any of the members can put together a quilt, then they
should be able to teach a class. One class a month, maybe two. There are those who just can’t, or won’t; there
are those who are standby’s for times you need them
most; and there are those who are leaders and just don’t
know it yet!
Anyone can be the 1st VP Education. Here are some details from the by-laws:
 You can serve for up to two years and fade away. If
you like this position so much that you want to stay
on, the Board of Directors will most likely approve.
 You will assist the President and perform the duties
of the President in his/her absence.
 You will assume the office of President in the event
of a vacancy during his/her term. (I don’t need to
expand on this, do I?)
 You will be in charge of all classes. WOW! You
could be the next Martha Stewart of teaching!
Sherri, we are so
proud to call you
one of us!

Grab a friend, discuss your talents or the talents of those
you know and ask them if they would like to teach a
class. How hard is that? You and a friend can be the 1st
VP Education and share the duties and vote. Just think,
only six (6) board meetings a year for each of you! If this
sounds like you, give me a call.

We have a National Education Director at our disposal
who will find teachers for us. She is a Havasu Stitcher,
so she knows what we want. All you do is call her and
find out who she has coming to the area and make the
deal. Very simple. The rest of the classes are up to you.
You will be responsible for keeping the ironing board,
two irons, three electric reels, some step-ups for tables
to make them taller, and a wagon to hold it all! You can
choose to keep these items in the storage unit or close at
hand. Sign-ups at the general meeting means you get a
designated table to sit behind, your sign-up sheets, your
pre-made samples or picture of what you will be making , and a lot of people to talk with about the project.

Thanks to everyone who’s participating in the BOM program.
I was happy to share with Stitchers last month before the
meeting and at Monica’s workshop information about making so many different projects from the Vintage Farm Girl
blocks. These items are so cute and make such wonderful
gifts for your friends and family. If you missed the class and
want written copies of the instructions, call me or send me
an email and I’ll be happy to forward them to you.

Please let the Sunshine Chairman know if you would like
to have a card sent to one of our members.
Please put Sunshine Lady in the Re: section of the e-mail.
PRESIDENT: Sheri Ahrens
Because we don’t have “regular” business meetings in December or January this year, you’ll need to bring the following blocks and share them at the general meeting in February. (This will give some of our returning snowbirds a
chance to catch up on the Vintage Farm Girl blocks.) If all
your blocks are complete, you’ll receive a maximum of 3
chances in the drawings for February:
December
Baking Day
Egg Basket
Farmhouse
Scrappy Maple Leaf
January
Feed and Seed
Fresh Pears
Kitchen Window
Mama Hen
February
Old Glory
Sunday Morning
Wooly Sheep
Patchwork Pumpkin
1ST VP: Open Position
2ND VP: Sherri Ashford
TREASURER: Adeline Reiten
SECRETARY: LeAnn Richey

Our LQS vendors will also be back in February with some
new fabrics and items to share with you.
And be prepared for February – in addition to our regular
blocks, there will be a contest for all Havasu Stitchers with
voting by our attending membership taking place at the
March meeting. A very cool prize will be given to the winner. And here’s a hint for you about the contest – what’s the
ugliest thing in your sewing room or studio? Hmmmmmm.
Also be sure to keep up on the additional block patterns
available online in a PDF from It’s Sew Emma, the online
pattern store for Fat Quarter Shop. If you haven’t seen
them, they’re adorable.

stop by and check us out, visit, deliver the finished projects you have taken home to sew, or pick up projects to
take home. We do this to share our love of sewing with
the community.
You can be as involved as you choose…. Come just once
or each month. What we currently make: lap or children
quilts 40”x 48 to 60” max, fidget quilts, tie-on walker

of all puppy pillows made including those you deliver to
the Western Humane Society, so be sure to let us know

HALL OF FAME
Congratulations to Sarah McNary, winner
of the Hall of Fame entry in the quilt
show. Here’s how Sarah describes her
beautiful entry:
Please sign up to bring snacks
to the general meeting!
Blue Water Moonrise is one interpretation
that developed in the crafting of an original design for the 2015 Bridge of Friendship Opportunity Quilt. The design team
consisted of Linda Visnaw, Judy Fintz,
Sherri Ashford and Sarah McNary. The
goal was to create a quilt that represented the beautiful lakeside setting of Lake
Havasu while showcasing the myriad
types of quilting our members do including piecing, paper-piecing, applique, freemotion and computerized quilting. Sarah's version of the quilt is very special to
her as it, "represents the creative design
skills of our awesome team (Linda V.,
Judy F., Sherri A., and myself) and the
friendship and artistry demonstrated by
Bonnie F. and Judy Y. who helped me
with the hand applique in the eleventh
hour so it would be ready for the Stitchers meeting last year!"
