Winter 2012 Edition – Upstate Bright Start Early
Volume 4, Issue 1 January 2012 Local Events Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson Area Connections Winter Snow Globe Here's what you'll need... • Small baby food jar • Glitter, foil confetti, or eggshells • Florist clay (if using tiny toy) • Tiny toy or greenery • Glycerin, mineral oil, or baby oil • Ribbon • Distilled water or water that has been boiled and cooled • Glue for snow globe (clear silicone sealant, aquarium sealant) **Adult help required with gluing. Here's how you make it... 1. Put something interesting on the jar lid, such as a small toy. 2. In order to elevate the scene so it is in clear view, glue a plastic lid inside the jar lid or build up the area with a little extra florist clay. Be sure to leave the edges clear so you have room to screw on the lid. 3. Fill the jar up to 1/4 inch from the rim with water. 4. Prepare your snow using the shell from a hard boiled egg. Separate the shell from the membrane, place in a Ziploc bag, and crush with a rolling pin. Finer particles will fall more slowly in the snow globe. Avoid crushing eggshell into a powder as it will simply float in the water instead of falling. 5. Add several drops of glycerin or mineral oil or baby oil to the water to keep the snow suspended and floating properly. 6. Spoon in some glitter. (Not too much though!) 7. Seal the lid with a bead of silicone sealant around the threads of the lid and close tightly. When the glue is dry, turn the jar upside down and watch it snow. 8. Wrap and glue a thin ribbon around the outside lid of the jar. http://www.create-kids-crafts.com/winter-crafts-for-kids.html A free PARENTING CLASS about how to build your child’s self-esteem is from 9 – 11 a.m. Jan. 18 at the Center for Community Services in Simpsonville.
