January, 2012
FREE Yabba Dabba Doo! Another year has come and gone, and we find ourselves in the year 2012. I would be lying if I said I haven’t been waiting for this year with great anticipation. With all of the hoopla surrounding the “end of the world” 2012 predictions made by the Mayans, Sybil, Nostradamus, Baba Vanga and many others, I anticipate many end of the world sales and events this year. Deep down, all of this doom and gloom has me reminiscing on the past instead of looking toward what is ahead. I struggle to keep my focus on the goal set before me. I suppose this is natural as we grow older, but I can honestly say that I never saw my grandfather dwelling on the past in this way. He always had such enthusiasm about the future. In fact, the only time I saw any longing for the past from him was while he watched cartoons. #32 January 2012 “Each must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, and which course is patriotic and which isn't. You cannot shirk this and be a man. To decide against your convictions is to be an unqualified and inexcusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let man label you as they may.” Mark Twain ronson Lumber Co. Frederick Joseph “Fred” Flintstone and his friend, Bernard "Barney" Rubble were, and still very much are, my picture of the embodiment of the American Dream. Why not? The legendary cartoon is still a major influence in American culture today. For example, there are Flintstones Chewable Vitamins, Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles, and even Welch's Grape Juice, which by no small coincidence was Pebbles' favorite drink. The Stone Age town of Bedrock was filled with dinosaurs, saber-toothed tigers, wooly mammoths, and other long-extinct animals who co-exist with cavemen. These cavemen listen to records, live in split-level homes, and eat out at restaurants, yet their technology is made entirely from pre-industrial materials and largely powered through the use of various animals. For example, when a character takes photographs with an instant camera, inside of the camera box, a bird carves the picture on a stone tablet with its bill. The cars are made out of stone, wood, animal skins, and are powered by the passengers' feet. Baby wooly mammoths where used as vacuum cleaners while adult woolly mammoths acted as a shower by spraying water with their trunks. One of my favorite aspects of the cartoon series is the Loyal Order of Water Buffalos Lodge No. 26, originally called the Loyal Order of Dinosaurs. The secret Fraternity had secret hand shakes and passwords like, Ack, Ack, A-Dack, funny looking hats, and the infamous Grand Imperial Poobah (An honor which Fred was rewarded for his honesty); there was nothing cooler than this noble fraternity. Or, as they say at the lodge, “Water Buffalo, Water Buffalo, Moooooo!” Fred Flintstone was a lot more than a simple blue collar man; He was a man of passion and dedication, take for instance his bowling, he goes so far as to take ballet lessons in order to improve his game which led to his nickname "Twinkle toes". He was a man of imagination and conviction which lead him to believe in extra terrestrial life, well at least one, Gazoo from the planet Zetox. He was a man of loyalty and devotion, like most us he showed this through his love for his dog, Dino. You may think it is foolish to base my image of the great American Dream on life at 345 Cave Stone Road, in Bedrock, but from where I stand, this classic American cartoon is the essence of everything I hope and pray America still is. Fred had no problem working for big industry at the Slate Rock and Gravel Company where their slogan was “Top quality stone at rock bottom prices”. He loved and cherished his wife Wilma, and his daughter, Pebbles. He worked hard to provide a home and car for his family. He never gave up on the dream of something bigger, and above all, he believed. Yes, I may be a fool, but to me watching the animated American marvel known as The Flintstones gives me hope for the New Year and makes me yell, “Yabba-Dabba-Doo!" (Which was originally derived from the Brylcreem advertising jingle motto "A Little Dab'll Do Ya!") CONTRACTORS CONTINUING EDUCATION At the request of our loyal customers we will be providing several elective classes that qualify for the CCB’s required continuing education hours. These classes will be listed on the events board at the Bronson Lumber Co. And new classes will be added as they come on line. These goals are always posted in front of my face in a place I will see them everyday. They become motivators, and reminders of the path that I would like to follow. Sometimes though, life happens, and my goals change as the year goes on. On the personal side: 2011 started out with a BANG in my life. January 13th, 2011, I married a truly wonderful man, a man that God prepared just for me! Over the year, we discussed finances, set up retirement accounts and learned the true art of depending on each other for good communication. We set aside nights out of each month that were focused just on each other- our little date nights have been cheap for the most part, but full of laughter and connection. All of these things were lined out in my 2011 goals, but as the year progressed, we felt the timing was perfect for our first baby. We are now expecting Baby Langdon #1 to introduce into the world in Spring 2012! In the business aspect of my life: I set out to accomplish a certain dollar volumn in sales, a volumn that would justify letting go of my second job as a waitress at Denny's before the year was over. I have never been one to take many risks financially, but before my goal was met, I left the job that I had been blessed with for over 5 years waitressing in a true family oriented restuarant. Stepping out in faith, I learned quickly that hard work eventually pays off. Not in my goals, but a total gift, I not only met my production goals this year, I doubled them! I had some other odds and ends lined out in my goals, such as community involvement. As life changed, and the year grew on, my goals changed as well and priorities changed positions. I have used my goals as a road map to leading a happy year, each and every year, and sometimes, it is ok to change your route to get to the same destination! If you haven't done it yet, sit down with a pen and paper, and make your road map to a happy life in 2012! Be realistic with yourself, and set some goals you know you can accomplish, as well as some that might seem like a stretch! It is amazing to watch how those goals will help shape your life and make your New Year something to review next December with a smile on your face! New For 2012 Blue Mountain Humane Association will no longer euthanize animals. As a result we will no longer be able to receive feral cats or kittens. All animals will undergo a preassessment evaluation for temperament, behavior, and health prior to intake for the purpose of re-homing. 2012 New shelter hours: We will now be open on Monday’s! MondayFriday 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM & Saturday’s 1:00 PM- 5:00 PM People Make the Difference One Pet at a Time When an animal arrives at BMHA who is not quite ready for adoption BMHA relies on the love and homes of our foster care volunteers. These volunteers open their homes to kittens needing time to grow, pregnant or nursing animals, dogs that need a little extra attention, or a companion animal recovering from an illness or injury. Hundreds of animals have been given a second chance thanks to the time and love given by their foster families. Many foster families assist with finding new homes for their foster-ling. Those animals are included on our Website's pet list. For more information contact our Foster Care Program coordinator at the BMHA 541-963-0807. What a handsome senior our 8 year old neutered male is! He has a sweet gentle nature.
