Michiana Bicycle Association
From the President:
MICHIANA BIKE TO
WORK WEEK
Hello MBA riders,
Well the snow has finally melted and the biking season is under
way. I don’t know about everyone else that spent this long, cold
and snowy winter here in Michiana, but for the first time ever, I
really wanted to be somewhere warm. Snow blowing my driveway
became my only form of exercise this winter. I guess the upside to
having so much snow and cold, it makes you appreciate the
spring even more. With that in mind, I was curious how many
miles were rode in the past 3 months compared to 2013 and
2012 during the same time frame. In 2013 during the months of
January, February and March the club rode 3758 miles and in
2012 we rode 6047 miles. This year through March the total
club miles have been 467. I think that pretty much says it all!
Schedule of Events
June 8 - Bike the Bend
June 10 Organic Pancake Breakfast at
Lasalle Grill
June 11 - Bike Movie at The State Theatre
June 12 - Carbon Waffle Truck at Emporium
Parking Lot
The MBA Swap Meet was held on held on March 23rd at the
Red Barn at St. Patrick’s Park. The previous Swap Meets were
held at Pinhook Park. The new location attracted many more
vendors than in previous years. I’m guessing that there were
around 40 vendors and there were probably 150 bicycles for sale.
I heard many of the sellers and buyers say that the Red Barn
was a great venue and were very pleased with the MBA holding
the event there. I need to also thank NIMBA for their participation with the event, as they are great partners and provided
much needed assistance throughout the day with set up of tables
and clean up after the event. The event provides an outlet for first
time riders to get into biking at low cost and gives seasoned riders
great deals on biking products. I really think moving the event
out to St. Patrick’s was a great success and I’m sure it made a
favorable impression to all the participants.
June 13 - Bike to Lunch with Fiddlers Hearth at
the College Football Hall of Fame.
Registration is Open!

BIKE THE BEND
The Kick-Off ride was held on April 6th and it was a beautiful
day. I looked at the mileage charts and we had over a 1000
miles collectively for the MBA. Good job riders! Bonnie Yoder
did a great job organizing the event and thanks to all of those
that helped with the event. The amount of food was just incredible and the recipes were amazing. As usual, I brought only a
plate of brownies and I felt I wasn’t worthy to the high standard
of cuisine that was before me. Next time, I’m stepping it up a
notch.
The 5th annual Bike the Bend will be Sunday, June 8, 2014 from 6:30 AM – 11:30 AM. Riders may start and stop at any point along the 30+
mile route. St. Patrick’s County Park is the northern end of the route that follows the river through
South Bend and Mishawaka to Merrifield Park.
Ride through beautiful parks, historic neighborhoods, urban venues, Northern Indiana Center for
History, the Indiana University South Bend campus
loop, Kamm Island, Beutter Park in Mishawaka.
Wear your Bike the Bend wristband (in registration
packet) to enjoy the Pancake Breakfast from 710:30 AM at The Brick on Northside Blvd.
I did want to mention that the Amishland and Lakes event
planning is well on its way and as in past years it takes a lot of
volunteers to make this event happen. In the coming months, as
we get better organized, we will be asking club members for their
support/time during August 1st through 3rd. I probably don’t
need to remind all of you, but this event basically provides the
revenue for all of the activities for the club.
Registration and packet pick-up will be at The
Grill, Indiana University South Bend Campus from
9 AM to 4 PM. The Grill is in the east end of the
Administration Building on the IUSB Mall. The Administration Building is on Mishawaka Avenue at S.
Esther Street, across from John Adams High School
gym and athletic field.
Some of you may know, but we have added a feature on the
MBA website that allows club members to advertise biking
equipment. Look at the top of the home page and click classified.
We may or may not keep this feature and this is basically a trail
run right now. Hopefully, this provides an outlet for our members
to sell their unwanted items and others to get a great deal.
Register online until midnight June 4th.
Until next month, be safe and keep on riding!
Early registration: Adults 18 years and over - $20
until midnight April 15th.
Thank you,
Regular registration for adults - $25 from April
16th - June 4th.

Children: 17 years and under ride without charge,
but must be registered with an adult rider.
Rider T-shirts may be purchased for $8 with registration, $10 if purchased separately.
Adult registration on Saturday and Sunday of Bike
the Bend weekend will be $35 at these SAG
stops: St. Patrick’s County Park, IUSB SAG at the
Aretz Pavilion on Northside Boulevard , Central
Park in Mishawaka.

7 tips for riding in rain
good idea to stay off the white lines on the road
when it's raining. They're slick and make braking
even more dangerous in bad weather.
7. When wet conditions start to dry, be careful. Once the water is off of your wheel, your
brake pads will grab the surface of the rim like
they're supposed to. This can cause problems if
the road is still slick, and it could cause you to
skid. Avoid an accident by braking gradually,
even when things are drying out.
Well, if we are lucky April showers will bring more
flowers and not more snow! In either case, inclement weather calls for adaptations for safe riding.
The 7 tips that follow were written by Marc Lindsay
of Active.com.
How to Clean Your Rain-Soaked Bike
1. Slow down gradually. In wet weather, it takes
longer to slow down or come to a complete stop.
Start braking well before you would in dry conditions, especially when approaching a corner. This
will keep you from slamming on the brakes too
late, and it'll give you enough time to slow to a
safe speed.
Rinse Cycle
Before taking cover, hose down your bike using low
pressure, if it's too high, you could force grit into
internal components such as the bottom bracket,
hubs, and bearings, or wash away necessary lubricants Don't forget wheels, drivetrain, and braking
surfaces, parts on which road crud accumulates.
2. Drag both brakes lightly on the rim when
you come to a stop. This will help to clear excess water off the surface of the rim. Remember
to give yourself more time and space.
Spin Cycle
Remove your seatpost and turn your bike upside
down so water can escape. Even if your frame is
carbon, which can't rust, do it to ensure no moisture
sits in your bottom bracket. Then take off your
wheels. If they have a drain hole, lay them at an
angle that lets the water run out of the opening. No
drain holes? Deflate your tires and drain water
through the valve-stem hole.
3. Make sure you have plenty of brake pad left
before you leave the house. Wet rims will disintegrate a pair of brake pads, so make sure you've
got plenty of rubber left before you begin your
ride. If you ride in wet conditions often, you might
want to consider purchasing pads specifically for
wet conditions.
4. Leave your carbon rims at home. If there's a
chance of showers, rims with an aluminumbraking surface are probably your best bet. Carbon rims perform just as well as aluminum in the
rain, but the cork brake pads needed for carbon
rims aren't a good choice.
Dry Cycle
Move the whole operation out of the rain, then replace your wheels and seatpost. Run a clean, dry
towel over your entire bike, getting into all the
nooks and crannies. Your final step: Lube the
chain.
5. Replace old brake cables. You probably won't
realize it when it's dry, but in wet conditions, you'll
notice that old cables make your brakes significantly less responsive. This can be a scary feeling when you're headed down a steep descent,
and it can make you lose control of your bike.
6. Don't brake on painted lines. In general, it's a
