LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND BOARD CHAIR 2008-09 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Sam Abouhassan Sam Abouhassan Custom Clothiers In Oil Country, Oilers hockey ignites a passion and excitement that unites our communities. A common love of the game and devotion to the team brings fans together each fall with anticipation for the upcoming season. Using that same energy, the Oilers have always made an effort to bring together the citizens of Oil Country for more than hockey; to work collaboratively to improve and support our communities. Leading this charge is the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) who, each year since 2001, has found innovative and engaging fundraising initiatives for fans to rally behind. Doug Rutherford Corus Radio Edmonton Patrick LaForge Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club Bruno Muller Caron Transportation System Denise Carpenter Colin Eicher EPCOR Michael Bobroff Eicher Corporation Rexall Every dollar raised by the EOCF is donated back to communities throughout Oil Country with over $1.5 million distributed last year alone. Naturally we are proud of our efforts to raise those funds and distribute them to charitable organizations who support youth, education, and health & wellness, which is the core of our EOCF model. The Oilers players, management and staff all participate in the fundraising efforts of the EOCF and together create momentum that’s extremely powerful. The reason we work together to culminate these significant donations is to reinvest in our communities. It’s what the Oilers have always done, and always will do. Simply put, it’s the right thing to do. Most importantly, all of this is possible thanks to Oilers fans who give generously allowing the EOCF to make a notable impact in Oil Country. Just as important, the school offers youth help with everything from finding appropriate accommodation to counseling, to food and medical care. Dr. Joe Cloutier – Inner City High’s Director – says the school’s mandate has to be large in order to succeed. “Without taking care of their lives, as a whole, we have no hope of giving them an education,” he says. “We are building bonds of trust by saying ‘You don’t have to worry about this anymore.” In some cases, the work will be nothing short of life-saving. Currently, Inner City High School’s space is startlingly 6 limited. A few rooms in the current facility must each serve many different functions, putting a strain on and limiting this unique and necessary learning environment. All that will soon change with the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation’s (EOCF) commitment to redeveloping Inner City High School. With the assistance of Edmonton-based architects, Cohos Evamy, the EOCF is working to create a new school that will bring the hopes and dreams of its students to life. In short, providing a place for students of divergent cultures and socio-economic backgrounds to experience the empowerment that comes with a high school education. This facility has the potential to support Edmonton’s inner city youth on many levels. It will provide a safe and inspiring place with a strong sense of community, one that goes beyond basic education to address the many and complex needs of our youth at risk. Oilers players have developed an affinity with the school and its story. “The players have really embraced Inner City High School, though some of the students initially had a hard time understanding why these players cared about them,” explains Doug Goss, Board Chair of the EOCF. “But they do it because they believe in it.” As a testament to the connection Oil Country has to its team, attendance at the school has gone up and remained steady since the EOCF and Oilers became involved. “The EOCF obviously helps out enormously with funding,” says Dr. Cloutier. “But I think the involvement the Oilers players have shown, demonstrates a lot about their character and compassion to ensuring everyone succeeds.” FACT For kids who come from broken homes and lives rooted in the street, finding something that’s constant and stable can be difficult – but vitally important. In downtown Edmonton, the steadying force is a humble building called Inner City High School. Currently housed in the Boyle Street Community League, the school has become both a safe haven and a way out for many at-risk youth. NET PROCEEDS FROM THE EOCF’S WINNER’S CHOICE LOTTERY ARE ALLOCATED TO THE REDEVELOPMENT OF INNER CITY HIGH SCHOOL. Inner City High School students receive donated coats from Edmonton Oilers Captain Ethan Moreau. 7 SUPPORTING YOUTH SEATS FOR KIDS Thanks to the generosity of Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Oil Kings season seat holders across Oil Country, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation was able to provide game tickets to the following registered children’s charities. These tickets gave children facing extraordinary challenges, the chance to experience live Oilers and Oil Kings hockey at Rexall Place. The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation issues tax receipts for the face value of the game tickets donated. 8 Special Olympics St. Albert Spirit Keeper Youth Society Sport Central Association Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation Strathcona Boys & Girls Club Terra Association The Rainbow Society of Alberta Uncles & Aunts at Large (Edmonton Area) Society YMCA of Edmonton Youth Emergency Shelter Society Zebra Child Protection Centre Society FACT Athletes That Care Society Hope Mission Youth Shelter Battleford Boys and Girls Clubs iHuman Youth Society Battleford Indian Metis Friendship Centre Inner City Youth Development Association Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton Kidney Foundation of Canada Big Brothers Big Sisters of Red Deer Kids on Track Association of Edmonton Bosco Homes Kids Up Front Boys & Girls Club of Leduc Kids with Cancer Society Boys & Girls Club of Red Deer McMan Youth, Family & Community Services Association Boys & Girls Club of Wetaskiwin Mountain Plains Family Services Society of Edmonton Boys & Girls Clubs of Edmonton Norwood Child & Family Resource Centre CASA – Child, Adolescent & Family Mental Health P.A.C.E. HORCOFF’S HEROES 10 FACT In 2008-09, Edmonton Oilers Assistant Captain, Shawn Horcoff and his wife, Cindy, created Horcoff’s Heroes. They personally purchased a block of tickets to 20 Oilers games throughout the season and graciously donated the tickets to children’s charities. Before these games, children and their chaperones were given the opportunity to meet Shawn for autographs and pictures. Each child also received a Horcoff’s Heroes t-shirt and a voucher for a pop and a hot dog at the game. DURING THE 2008-09 SEASON, 260 CHILDREN PARTICIPATED IN THE HORCOFF’S HEREOS PROGRAM. Shawn Horcoff signs an autograph for a new friend at Horcoff’s Heroes. 11 SUPPORTING EDUCATION ADOPT-A-SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS New in 2008-09 the Edmonton Oil Kings Adopt a School program gave businesses and individuals in Edmonton the opportunity to provide Oil King tickets to a school of their choice in return for a tax receipt from the EOCF. Edmonton Oilers defenseman, Jason Strudwick, got on board when he helped announce the Adopt a School initiative at his former school, Holy Cross Elementary/Junior High. One of the EOCF’s pillars of support is expanding educational opportunities for people in and around Oil Country. To that end, EOCF provides a number of annual scholarships through post-secondary institutions: FACT 12 NorQuest College - $10,000 University of Alberta - $10,000 NAIT - $10,000 Grant MacEwan University - $10,000 DURING THE 2008-09 SEASON, 251 COMPANIES PARTICIPATED IN THE ADOPT-A-SCHOOL PROGRAM ALLOWING THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN TO ATTEND VARIOUS OIL KINGS GAMES. Jason Strudwick launches Adopt-A-School at his former school in Edmonton. 13 SHARE A BOOK ICE SCHOOL Books stir the senses, inspire the imagination, and spark a love of reading that can last a lifetime; they are essential to lifelong development, and yet many children from low-income families have no books or very few books at home to call their own. The Edmonton Oilers ICE School program is a site-based educational initiative that gives teachers and students the opportunity to move their classrooms into the fascinating world of Rexall Place and Northlands for an entire week. Curriculum for the week is planned and implemented by participating teachers, with the help of an ICE School coordinator seconded by Edmonton Public Schools. During the 2008-09 school year, the EOCF once again joined with the Edmonton Journal Raise a Reader Foundation to bring the Share a Book program to over 2,000 Grade One students, in classes from 66 schools throughout Oil Country. For many children, these were the very first books they had ever owned. The Share a Book program ensures that joy of reading is not limited to a student’s financial means by providing them with books to call their own. The EOCF was also an active participant in the annual Raise a Reader Day, with several prominent members of the Oilers organization chipping in to sell Edmonton Journal newspapers to raise funds for the program. With your support, the campaign raised a total of $102,815. 14 During 2008-09, 550 kids with 26 teachers from 24 classes and over 100 parent volunteers filled the ICE School classroom and had the chance to connect learning with real life. During a year-long theme based around Teamwork, students met a variety of professionals working at Rexall Place, learned about the mechanics of how the building transforms from one event to the next, and visited the Northlands Network TV studio to learn about productions. Students also got up close and personal with the standard and thoroughbred racehorses at Northlands, traveled down 118 Avenue discussing the work in a community to make change and some learned about our deep baseball history by visiting TELUS Field. Not surprisingly, the highlight for many students was the chance to learn about ice-making first hand – by skating on Rexall Place ice! ICE School is made possible through funding from the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation and is operated in cooperation with Northlands. FACT The EOCF Share a Book program is a literacy program which gives children from low-income families the opportunity to experience the magic and joy of reading at home by providing them with two new books and their own book bag. NOW IN ITS SEVENTH YEAR, OVER 3,500 STUDENTS HAVE PASSED THROUGH THE EOCF’S ICE SCHOOL PROGRAM. Zack Stortini reads to Grade One students during the launch of Share A Book. 15 SUPPORTING HEALTH AND WELLNESS Throughout the season, the EOCF partners with Oilers players and their wives and girlfriends to produce a number of highly successful special events. In addition to contributing many hours to their personal charitable interests, the Oilers Ladies help to ensure the success of many fundraising events at Rexall Place. With your support, the Oilers Ladies raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charitable groups in our community. 16 Shirts Off Our Backs, in support of the Edmonton Christmas Bureau, raised $50,000.
