‘Show up for them’
H
onoring Our Heroes is Feb. 26, a week from Friday. The 51 1tables sold to date include 41 sponsor
tables, nine first-responder tables and two donor tables, That’s the good news., said HOH Chair PDG
Ron Gay. “There is still room to grow.” See flyer in this issue.
The bad news, he said, is that Lions have purchased fewer than 50 individual tickets. If you can’t be there, buy
tickets anyway, he said. “We need to have a good crowd on hand to honor our first responders.
“When we call 9-1-1, we expect someone to show up,” said Gay. “This event honors the brave men and
women who answer your call; now, we need you to show up for them.”
All four of the widows of local first responders killed in the line of duty in recent years will be honored. “This is
our opportunity to say
thank-you to them for their
sacrifice,” said Lion Gay.

“We will construct whatever can be built with what we have in the bank in October,” said Gerling.
Other Fun for All fundraisers
The College Station Kiwanis annual pancake breakfast is Saturday, Feb. 20, from 8 am to 1 pm. All
proceeds go to the Fun for All Park. “Come out, wear your Lions shirt and cap, and let the Kiwanis know we
support them,” said Lion Gerling.
Brazos Valley Fashion Week is planned for March 3,4 and 5. All money raised go to the Fun for All
Playground. Lion Judy LeUnes has information.
Christmas tree kudos
About $9,500 was raised through Christmas tree sales, reported Lion President Diane Jones Meier. Lions and
others who helped make the project a success were honored Monday.

Meet Your Fellow Lion

This week: Lion David Sahm
W
here did you grow up? Go to school? Amarillo. I was a graduate of the Class of ’77 at Amarillo
High. Our mascot was the Golden Sandstorm, and we were called Sandies.
What brought you to the Bryan-College Station area? Texas A&M Swim Team and Corps of Cadets.
You’ve lived and worked here for many years. Lived here since 1988 and worked at Texas A&M and TEEX
for most of it. I spent three years in the financial services business and just over four in the oil industry.
What is your favorite event or project of the College Station Noon Lions Club? July 4th at the Bush Library,
selling Christmas Trees and the Wienerfest races. These are all so much fun.
Tell us about your work experience. What was your very first job? What
have you done professionally recently, and what changes are
ahead? As noted before, it is varied, but centers around military and
public service. I had 30 years of active and reserve duty service in the
Marines. I spent 10 years working with the Corps of Cadets on campus
and was involved in many on campus projects. I have roughly nine years
with TEEX working with its homeland security related training. Ahead, I
plan to retire from the A&M System and look forward to starting on
another career.
What is the most rewarding part of being in the training field? What is
most challenging or frustrating? I like meeting people. They all bring
unique stories. In the oil and gas field, I did the onboarding for all new
employees at the company I worked for. I trained hundreds over three
years, and they represented all parts of the Brazos Valley. The most
frustrating thing is that safety and training, if done right, is where an
organization can get the most out of people. If not, then people do not
get properly brought into an organization and mistakes are made that
affect working relationships and loyalty to the organization.
Tell us about your family. I am married to my high school sweetheart,
Janice Sahm, who went to a rival high school and university. She was a

Palo Duro High School Don, and a Texas Tech Red Raider. We married
in 1982. Later, she became an Aggie, getting her M.Ed. in education. I have three daughters, two sons-inlaw, and an 18-month-old grandson. They all live here in town.
T
here are Jessica and Jasen. Jessica is an RN at the Scott & White hospital and Jasen is a wastewater
treatment technician at Texas A&M. There’s also Rachel and Blayne: Rachel teaches math at Cypress
Grove and Blayne is a certified diesel mechanic at a local dealership. They have our 18-month-old
grandson, Russell David—whom we call Rusty—and he is a ball of fire. Our youngest daughter is Tonie. She
is a senior at A&M Consolidated and is going to A&M in the fall. She will major in agricultural economics.
Any pets? We have a basset hound named Lily and two “grand dogs”—a dachshund named Bela and an
English bulldog named Mack. We have two “grand cats,” Mr. Kitty and Luna, and a “grand cockatiel” named
Banana. Yes we babysit all! The two grand dogs and cats all huddle in one fluff ball in the dog house when it
is cold. Bela is a veteran contestant at the Wienerfest.
What is the most recent movie you’ve seen, and how would you rate it? The last movie was the recent Star
Wars movie, and I loved it. As an original Star Wars fan in 1977, the recent one tied into the original series
very well.

ome of you may know that in my retirement, I have taken back production of a WTAW Radio feature
called “Bravo Brazos Valley”. I started it in 1999 and it’s a 3 ½ minute feature that spotlights people or
“do good” organizations in the Brazos Valley.
I know that among our membership are stories that need to be told. Stories that might make listeners say
“That’s interesting, I didn’t know that!!”
So if there’s anything unique about you, your history, your unique hobby or passion; Maybe you invented
something or you give of your time in a special way to a special organization; I want you to email me and tell
me briefly about it and then I’ll arrange to come record a short conversation about it.
Or maybe you know someone or have a relative from the Brazos Valley who has a unique story to tell about
themselves.
The only requirement is that you or they live in
what we consider the Brazos Valley.
