We have reached our half way mark in our
Lions’ year. I am very pleased to announce
that the Vancouver Legacy Lions Club will
be chartered on March 9th at the Shiang
Garden in Richmond, $48. We look forward
in your participation to welcome our newest
addition to the District.
For the second half of the year, we are concentrating on concluding the
development of another Lions club and a couple of Leo clubs. By doing this
we will achieve the District goals we have set out.
Our clubs are in full swing in their service fund raising activities for a strong
finish to our Lions year.
We have some very special charter anniversaries coming up; Vancouver
Chinatown Lions 60th anniversary event on April 27th, Smithers Lions 50th
anniversary on May 17th. Date of Sunshine Coast Lions Club’s 50th
anniversary celebration is to be announced. Please do your best to support
these clubs who have shown their leadership in our District for over the last
century.
I look forward to completing my visitation to a few remaining clubs. I would
like to thank the clubs for their most generous reception and support this year.
We have been hard at work with finalizing the details of our Spring
Conference which takes place on April 25th to 26th at the Burnaby Executive
Hotel Conference Centre. Please register early to
participate and celebrate a successful year with all
the clubs in our District.
Yours in Service,
District Governor Peter Cheng

2nd Vice District Governor Eric Keller’s “Talk of the Lions” :
Ladies & Gentlemen of Lions 19-A :
A most enjoyable visit at Gibson Lions Club . The entire ferry
journey connected and completed flawlessly. True to your area’s name :
Sunshine Coast , the sun did indeed come out as we left cloudy West
Van behind and docked in full sunshine at the Lonsdale side.
It was just fine to start out with drinks and a few appies @ scenic
Grandview Road overlooking Georgia Strait . What a great setting and nice
neighbourhood. The presentations and info exchanged at Dougall Hall were very
helpful and the *jokes* just kept coming. Judging by all the laughter clearly evident in the photos there
can be no doubt but that everyone had “fun” !
Vancouver Diamond Lions Club’s
Chinese New Year Fundraising Dinner was
a grand affair and I always admire the
*Costume Parade* and the Dragon
festivities. Love the photo of the young
Girl in her fancy dress and the colourful
Mounties in Red serge at my table. It is
nice to meet so many Lions I know and new
guests.
Well, that was a rollicking evening on Jan. 23rd for Ambleside
Tiddlycove Lions! Our Great Scot, Robbie, was surely smiling
upon us. . . …We initially banked on 50 Lions & Guests; that was
moved up to 55 then 57. In the end 63 delicious Haggis & Roast Beef dinners
were served. The place was full; what a great atmosphere !! Our thanks to
Cynthia , Pat & Augustina for providing plenty of food and Kudos to our Tom
for his hard work in the set-up and manning the bar with Ali.
President Bryan’s strong voice maintained order and continuity and our resident Scot from Troon, Peter,
delivered with great pomp & circumstance the steaming, oozing Haggis feast. He and his Son also presented
much history and little known facts of Poet Burns. I find those narratives of long ago fascinating.
fun* auction with precision and a great deal of humour. In the end a large
George T. & Don handled the *
amount of rubbish and some excellent items were successfully unloaded upon the unsuspecting bidders. The
bags of magic Pemberton potatoes wrestled from their mysterious meadows always fetch a good price. The
standing lamp & chairs moved quickly; a heart-starter kit (was that what it was, Kevin?) was a good buy. And I
purchased a 1979 answering machine which, sadly, only works with rotary phones. Luckily, I still have one in
the basement (Ha, ha, ha . . .).
Our West Van Mayor, Michael Smith, joined us for the entire event and delivered a heart-felt speech. And
around our tables were gathered various past Council Chairs, District Governors, Zone Chairs & Charter
Members. It was quite the auspicious assembly. My thanks to Pres. Dian from Deep Cove for bringing so
many keen Lions. PZC Dorothea from Pemberton urged us to compete in the Curling fundraiser in March. As
defending Champs from Ambleside Page, Bryan, Boyd, Dave F. & I (+ a few ringers) shall have to make a
return appearance. And PZC Vince Moule invited us to participate in a July fair in sunny Pemberton. I’m only
coming, Vince, if I can bring along several bags of “free-range” West Van farm potatoes – you understand . .

The festive days of Christmas and New Year for 2014 just passed and here we are
getting ready and excited to welcome the Chinese New Year ......Year of the Horse !!
Let me take this opportunity to wish all members of our Lions Community :
Gung Hei Fat Choi
Good Luck, Good Fortune and Good Health in the year of the Horse !!!!
The Vancouver Shaughnessy Lions Club - hands-on activities in December
Our members delivered Christmas Hampers (consisting of winter coats, winter Boots, Safeway Gift
and Toys R Us gift cards ) to 13 families , all victims of family violence. We had the chance to meet
some of the women and children of the families over a simple tea party, talking to them, listening to
their life stories while at the same time re-assuring ourselves the true meaning of "We Serve" !!
Our members also collected samples of soap bars, tolettries , perfume , chocolates and candies,
yarns and clothes for sewing for donation to the female street workers in the Vancouver East side
through the Agape Street Ministry, an organization targeted especially to help this group of women.
Vancouver Cathay NC Lions Club - Curling in December and Tree Chipping in January
Secretary Alvina of the Cathay Lions Club likes to share with us the success of the
above fundraising Events .....
Curling The Ice Curling Fundraising in Dec helped raised $1,000.00. An afternoon of fun and exercise with
40 participants from various Lions Clubs and friends. The money raised went to ICC (International
China Concern)
Tree Chipping 2 full days and 2 full teams of the Cathay NC Lion members participated at their Annual Tree
Chipping Event at the Kerrisdale Arena parking lot. In 2 days , they accomplished to collect 185

Dear A1 Presidents and Secretaries:
HEARING LOSS - Hearing loss is the fastest growing, and one of the most prevalent, chronic conditions facing
Canadians today. While hearing loss has many causes, age-related hearing loss and noise-induced hearing loss
are the two most common types.
According to Statistics Canada, more than one million adults across the country reported having a hearing-related
disability, a number more than 50% greater than the number of people reporting problems with their eyesight
(StatsCan, 2002). Other studies indicate that those suffering from hearing problems often under-report their
condition, so the true number may reach three million or more Canadian adults.
Another major US study published in the journal Paediatrics found that "approximately 12.5% of American children
and young adults in the U.S. are suffering from a hearing disability known as noise-induced hearing threshold
shifts, a change in hearing sensitivity that is experienced as temporary hearing dullness" (Niskar et al, 2001).
Over the last 10 years, the percentage of second graders with hearing loss has increased by 280%, while hearing
loss for eighth graders has increased over 400% (Montgomery and Fujikawa, 1992).
A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that nearly 15% of school-aged children had
hearing deficits at low and high frequencies (Niskar et al, 2004).
LIONS OF BC HEARING CONSERVATION SOCIETY - The Lions of BC Hearing Conservation Society was
registered under the Societies Act of the province of British Columbia , specifically to assist BC lions/lioness clubs
in that province address hearing loss issues within their communities. The clubs are often able to provide
assistance for individuals who suffer from hearing loss but who cannot afford the cost of hearing aids.
The club can make an application to the LIONS OF BC HEARING CONSERVATION SOCIETY
(http://www.lionsofbchearingsociety.org/).
1. The applicant must be a citizen of British Columbia who is able to demonstrate that family financial
circumstances preclude the purchase of hearing aids through normal means.
2. The applicant must visit a licensed hearing aid provider in British Columbia to obtain an assessment of
hearing proficiency, and a recommendation for remediation. The assessment and recommendation must then be
submitted to a local Lions/Lioness club.
3. The British Columbia Lions/Lioness club receiving the application makes their own decision whether or not
assistance can be provided to an applicant.
4. Upon request from a British Columbia Lions/Lioness club, the Lions of BC Hearing Conservation Society will
provide the applicant’s licensed provider with appropriate hearing instruments.
*
The service charges of the Provider are born by the sponsoring club and the Society.
*
Usually the aids supplied will be refurbished ones collected through the Society’s recycling program.
*
Applicants are usually requested to make a nominal contribution towards their hearing remediation, in
the form of a donation to the sponsoring club.
If you club has collected hearing aids or intends to collect hearing aids, and the contact is: Bob Jones, Treasurer

Hi to all Club Presidents and Secretaries:
Lions Quest is holding a fund raising drive and I asked cabinet members the best
way for our district to help with fundraising.
All cabinet felt that clubs do not have enough information on Lions Quest and if they
did have they would gladly donate to the fundraising. To that end I am sending this
email to provide more information about Lions Quest.
I am asking 2 things for fundraising:
 AT LAST CABINET MEETING ALL CLUBS WERE GIVEN LIONS QUEST RAFFLE TICKETS from
LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL. Please send in the funds to Lions Quest.
 ALSO, EACH DISTRICT HAS BEEN ASKED TO COMMIT A MINIMUM AMOUNT FOR FUNDRAISING.
I WILL COMMIT District 19A to $10,000.00. Remember this is a minimum. If all clubs commit $200.00
each the amount raised would be over $12,000.00.
Contact information for Lions Quest Canada Programs and resources for educators and Lions Club
members are available online at – www.lionsquest.ca
Let’s see if working together we can push this fundraising for Lions
Quest over the top.
