Friends and lovers, bound together by purest destiny for all eternity; yet now, without warning, with so few words, the knot unravelled, the flame extinguished… A walk in the woods The sensuous photography of Yanick Déry Over the past fifteen years, Montreal fashion photographer Yanick Déry’s reputation for injecting a special sense of passion and style into his images has taken him on photo shoots from New York to Miami, from Paris to Mexico City, working for high profile names such as Cover Girl, Donna Karan, Parasuco, Dex, Point Zero, Simon Chang, Marie Saint-Pierre and Aqualara. Graduating in photography from the Collège d’Etudes Générales et Professionelles du VieuxMontréal in 1993, Déry began his career at the age of eighteen as a press photographer for a local newspaper, while in his spare time he shot local models. Eventually, however, this part-time pastime turned into a full-time preoccupation. An innovator in digital imaging, Déry was one of the first to adopt new technologies for professional photography, and all his photography is shot with high resolution digital equipment. These days his camera of choice is the Canon 1DS Mark II, in combination with a Profoto flash system. Déry says that he likes his digital camera not just because it delivers pictures that look as good or better than traditional film, but also because it allows him to increase the number of images he takes in a day. Déry has enjoyed working with a multitude of celebrities including Pascale Bussières, Geneviève Borne, Maria Bello, Les Respectables, Virginie Coossa and Antoine Bertrand Jonas, and his work has graced the pages of such prestigious publications as Vital, Max, German Amica, Ocean Drive, The National Post, Clin d’Oeil, Mariage Québec, Instinct, Razor, and Overture. On these pages, an imaginary story of a beautiful girl’s heartbreak comes to life in a selection of Déry’s engaging photographic images. Alone once again, the scarlet forest rustling with memories of where they had been, and whispers of where she was going… through the beckoning rubicund forest, following a path that winds its way toward a destination unknown, steps guided by the cool breeze and branches pointing the way… the rhythmic ragged crunch of sanguine autumn leaves beneath her shiny black shoes marking the passage of another chapter, and the search for symbolic closure… arriving finally at the familiar firepit where so recently they embraced in the shadows of the crimson foliage; and here, the diary of their affair being consumed by the ruby flames, as she watches sadly, in solitude… •
