This is a core value at Central Maine Medical Center and we practice it with commitment. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to those in our extended community who have donated their time, treasure and trust to make this vision a reality. Feature Story Feature Story Feature Story 24 Consecutive Years of Giving 30 Unrestricted & Restricted Endowment Funds 32 Gifts in Tribute: Honor & Memorial Gifts 39 2015 Events at Central Maine Medical Center In our continuous quest for excellence in what we do, we assess the quality of our medical, professional and support staff every day, making changes when needed to ensure the highest level of patient care and safety. We have made major strides in this direction during the last year…. and our hard work is showing results. In 2014, CMMC was once again rated an “A” Hospital Safety Score from the Leapfrog Group, which tells us how well our hospital protects patients from errors, injuries and infections. CMMC was also recently recognized by the Joint Commission as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures. An essential part of our mission is the charitable care we provide to those in need. We never turn away patients who arrive in our Emergency Department regardless of their ability to pay. CMMC continues to rely on the support of individuals, businesses and other organizations that recognize the importance of quality care for our region. Charitable contributions help us to purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment, recruit talented medical and professional staff, and provide support for projects that cannot be funded through our limited capital budget. Last year, donations helped fund the expansion of critical care beds to support growth of the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute as more Mainers chose to receive advanced cardiac services right here. Donations were also used to support nursing education, the Special Delivery Family Birthing Center, the Arbor House, the Bennett Breast Care Center and the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing, to name a few. Looking ahead, we are in the planning stage for a new, state-of-the-art Special Delivery Birthing Unit. I hope you enjoy reading our Annual Report patient stories; they highlight a few of CMMC’s ongoing efforts to make a difference in the lives of the people we serve. Our ability to deliver the right treatment in the right way at the right time is a cornerstone of the healthcare we provide; patients from both near and far have expressed their gratitude for our commitment to this endeavor. We hope you agree. Sincerely, Peter E. Chalke President and CEO, Central Maine Healthcare 2 2014 Partners in Giving | www.cmmc.org MATT WALSH LISTENED TO HIS HEART… And Then Sought Help at CMHVI When Matt Walsh felt fluttering in his chest last winter— a symptom of atrial fibrillation, an abnormal heart rhythm that could indicate a serious heart issue—he paid attention. The Greene resident was only 33, which might seem young for a heart condition—but he knew that with a family history of heart issues he should seek medical help. Matt met with Dervilla McCann, MD, a cardiologist at Central Maine Heart & Vascular Institute, who recommended that he see CMHVI cardiothoracic surgeon Paul Weldner, MD. Diagnostic tests revealed that Matt had a problem with a heart valve. The good news: Dr. Weldner is skilled at minimally invasive heart valve repair. Before agreeing to a procedure, Matt researched his condition, his treatment options and surgeons. He realized that Dr. Weldner was the person he wanted. “Everybody I talked to said that if I was going to have heart valve surgery, Dr. Weldner was the guy to do it.” Dr. Weldner has almost 20 years of experience in surgical care of the heart and major blood vessels. He has received extensive training in minimally invasive valve surgery and valve replacement. This type of surgery is performed through tiny openings in the chest, using thin, high-tech instruments, miniature cameras and techniques that eliminate the need for a large incision through the breastbone. Recovery is faster, and there is less chance of complications. Matt had his procedure done in April, 2014. He was able to walk the next day; after three nights at CMHVI he was able to go home. “I was back to a fairly normal routine a week after the surgery,” Matt says. “I was playing softball and golfing after around six weeks. I felt like I could have done both before that, but I was advised that a full swing could be hard on the muscles around the incision until then.” “Everybody I talked to said that if I was going to have heart valve surgery, Dr. Weldner was the guy to do it.” Matt’s recovery also included 24 sessions of cardiac rehabilitation. His surgeon told him that during recovery he might experience atrial fibrillation again, but that was normal, and would not be a recurring problem. He did have one episode several weeks after the procedure, but since then he has not experienced it. By taking his symptoms seriously, Matt Walsh was able to address a heart problem that could have worsened. Any heart irregularity, at any age, should be evaluated. We asked Sheri Verville, President of the Associate Volunteers, to illuminate just what the volunteers provide. Sheri has been president since 2013; she served as vicepresident for two years before that. Her term ends in June 2015. The current vice-president, Sue Donovan, will then assume the role of president. CMMC is fortunate to have many volunteers in this program, as Sheri notes. “We currently have about 90 volunteers who are employees (or retired) from many generous establishments in the area that allow them to take the time from their busy schedules to join our monthly meetings, as well as volunteer and participate in our fundraising events,” she says. “These companies believe in the work that we do as volunteers for CMMC.” As president, Sheri has numerous responsibilities. “I believe my role is to attend every meeting, be involved in as many of the events as possible, and engage all volunteer Associates by making them feel recognized and appreciated for their help,” “We are always looking for people who believe in the work that CMMC does, and want to get involved.” 4 2014 Partners in Giving | www.cmmc.org she says. “Also, I look for ways that we can do even more to support the CMMC Development Office with fundraising efforts.” Sheri also keeps an eye to the future. “It is important to me to build on our membership. When we increase our number of volunteers we can increase the work we do.” Associate Volunteers help in many ways. “One of the most important things that we do is to share what we learn at the meetings with our family, friends and colleagues,” says Sheri. “The Development Office staff does an amazing job of scheduling informative presentations every month. We learn about the progress of projects like the new Emergency Department, plans to update the birthing center, etc. The CMMC leadership team members often attend to share what's happening within the organization. We then take that with us into the community and keep people informed.” The volunteers also provide hands-on participation in several annual fundraising events. “We host an annual golf tournament and we co-host the annual Spring Gala with the Woman's Hospital Association,” Sheri notes. “Donations from these events help to fund projects or buy equipment that will help CMMC continue to provide the best healthcare available. We have organized an Arbor House Helicopter Ball Drop event for four years that benefits the Arbor House, and this year we introduced the Charles Day Glow Golf Scramble, which benefited Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute.” Sheri encourages anyone interested in giving to the community to consider signing on as a volunteer. As she says, “We are always looking for people who believe in the work that CMMC does, and want to get involved.” To learn more about the Associate Volunteer Program, call the CMMC Development Office at (207)795-2950. And it’s all because she went to see Norris Lee, MD, an otolaryngologist at Central Maine Medical Center last summer. The 75-year old woman had lived with blocked sinuses for most of her life. As a result, she suffered with severe allergies every year, after the ragweed started to bloom in late August. The allergies would persist through September. She endured constant sinus headaches, facial pain and other uncomfortable symptoms. As Joanne got older, she began to suffer allergies in the winter, as well. “I just got tired of it,” she says. Joanne says a segment on the television show “Dr. Oz” about sinuplasty, an innovative, minimally-invasive sinus procedure, had stuck in her mind. She remembered it because it seemed like a better alternative to conventional sinus surgery. Joanne’s pulmonologist at Central Maine Medical Center recommended she make an appointment to see Dr. Lee, an otolaryngologist at Central Maine Ear Nose and Throat. Dr. Lee was one of the first surgeons in the country to use powered surgical instruments during endoscopic sinus surgery. He has pioneered advances in intranasal surgeries for removing tumors of the nose and sinuses without making facial incisions. After her appointment with Dr. Lee, and then a diagnostic scan, Joanne learned she had two blocked sinuses beneath her eyes. She was a perfect candidate for sinuplasty. The surgery involves using a surgical balloon that is inserted near the blocked passage; as the balloon is slowly inflated, the passage is opened and restructured. The balloon is then removed. “Dr. Lee was extremely gentle and the procedure didn’t hurt at all. I was so pleased when I could feel my sinuses opening up. 6 2014 Partners in Giving | www.cmmc.org Joanne recalls arriving at the hospital for surgery bearing sunglasses, expecting to have two black eyes after the surgery. She was anxious, as well. “I was scared,” she admits. When she told this to one of the nurses prior to surgery, “The nurse said, ‘You’ll walk out of here smiling,’” Joanne says. The nurse was correct. “I walked out and gave her the thumbs up.” (And she notes she did not need sunglasses, as there was no residual blackening of the eyes.) The longest part of the procedure was numbing the surgical area. A topical anesthetic was used. Joanne could have watched the sinuplasty on a monitor if she wanted to, but says she was not that brave. The procedure itself took less than 20 minutes. The only sensation she experienced was pressure. “Dr. Lee was extremely gentle and the procedure didn’t hurt at all. I was so CMMC’S ANNUAL EVENTS pleased when I could feel my sinuses opening up,” she says. Shortly after, she was in the car with her husband and headed home. After the anesthetic wore off, she used ice packs for pain relief. That night she took just one prescription pain reliever, slept well and did not need prescription pain relief in the following days. Since then, Joanne has had no recurrence of sinus issues. Besides eliminating her allergies, the procedure makes breathing easier. She no longer needs to purchase the sinus drops she relied on every fall and winter. And there’s been another bonus she hadn’t expected. “I can smell things better,” she says. Which, she said with a laugh, was first noticeable when her husband opened up a bag of cat food. “I said, ‘What’s that smell?’” Joanne has recommended other friends to consider sinuplasty. And she also recommends that her friends travel to Center Maine Medical Center for the procedure, because, as she says: “The care is excellent.” ■ Central Maine Medical Center hosted several successful fundraisers in 2014. We would like to say “Thank you, so much!” to all who participated and made donations of time and money. You have helped us continue to provide quality healthcare to so many. See the back page of this report to find dates for all our 2015 events. 18th Annual Spring Gala: The Heart of the City Just over $94,000 was raised at our Annual Spring Gala held in March. Sponsorships from many businesses, corporate partners and individual and staff donations made it all possible. The funds were donated to the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute. We were fortunate to have CareTech Solutions as our Event Sponsor, Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare as our Presenting Sponsor, and Center Street Dental as our Heart of the City Sponsor. This signature formal event is hosted jointly by the CMMC Associate Volunteers and the Woman’s Hospital Association. The Gala Committee volunteers—who represent many local businesses, CMMC employees and others—planned the event, organized inkind donations, and decorated the Kora Shrine Center in keeping with the theme, “The Heart of the City.” This team of dedicated volunteers was instrumental in creating a very special evening. More than 280 guests enjoyed a perfect four-course dinner prepared by the highly skilled staff in the CMMC Food Services Department. Many then took to the dance floor, to make it a night to remember in The Heart of the City! 2014 SPRING GALA MAJOR SPONSORS Presenting Sponsor: Event Sponsor: Heart of the City Sponsor: Saving Lives Sponsor: UMR Founding Sponsor: Cross Insurance Signage Sponsor: Neokraft Signs Publicity Sponsor: Sun Journal For the Heart Sponsors: Consigli Construction Co., Inc. The event raised $10,000 for the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute. This unique glow-in-the-dark tournament provided a fun and exciting experience while creating an opportunity to promote CMHVI, a valued resource within the community. Our volunteer committee planned and organized a wonderful evening of fun competition. We look forward to watching this new event grow into a community favorite! 2014 CHARLES DAY GLOW GOLF SCRAMBLE MAJOR SPONSORS: The Day Family Central Maine Orthopaedics Neokraft Signs, Inc. The Ambassadors raise money internally which helps to support funds such as the CMMC Employee Emergency Assistance Fund. This group of dedicated volunteers meets every month to plan and organize events. Their goodwill extends beyond the in-house fundraising. For example, as a result of their efforts to inspire others to make donations to a worthy cause, this year more CMMC employees participated and donated to community event fundraisers such as The Dempsey Challenge. The Ambassadors truly are a bridge from the hospital to the employees and to the communities. SUPER SHOES-AUBURN This dedicated Auburn business partnered with the Employee Ambassadors to raise money for the Central Maine Medical Family Employee Emergency Assistance Fund and the CMMC Support Staff Education Fund. Super Shoes, which offers uniforms and shoes designed to meet the comfort needs of hospital staff, contributed $9,056 to the Employee Emergency Assistance Fund and $2,504 to the Support Staff Education Fund through its special sales. We appreciate working with a local business that supports the hospital on several fronts. We would like to express our gratitude to the Ambassadors and to the employees who have helped support the needs of hospital staff and hospital programs. This year, the Employee Ambassadors raised $17,362 for CMMC through our internal fundraisers. We are pleased that our CMMC employees donated a total of $148,122 in 2014! BOOKS ARE FUN These popular book and gift sale events helped raise $5,802 for the Central Maine Medical Center Employee Emergency Assistance Fund. THE 5TH ANNUAL EMPLOYEE AND VOLUNTEER FOOD AND NECESSITIES DRIVE Our Employee Ambassadors coordinated a food drive to collect non-perishable food and other items for CMMC employees and volunteers who needed assistance through the holidays. When George Orton, her husband, came to the same knoll, he was startled to see her skidding helplessly down the mountain. In the short time it took for him to get to Sandra’s side, George says the trauma she’d suffered had become very apparent. “We don’t know what happened. We don’t know what she hit,” says George, “but it was obvious she had a severe head injury.” The ski patrol brought Sandra down the mountain and called for LifeFlight of Maine. A Bethel Rescue ambulance, staffed by longtime paramedic Alberta Broomhall, arrived to transport Sandra to the landing zone. Alberta started an intravenous line and kept Sandra’s airway clear until the helicopter arrived. Early intervention in trauma care is critical: if the right care isn’t provided at the right time, a traumatic injury can inflict its worst damage. What Sandra and George experienced over the next few months would demonstrate that her devastating injury was so effectively managed that some consider the outcome a “miracle.” Up Against the Clock The LifeFlight crew and the awaiting surgical team at Central Maine Medical Center were up against the clock. To ensure that Sandra’s swelling brain received the oxygen it needed, the LifeFlight crew intubated her and attached her to a ventilator. By ground, the trip to surgical care would have taken more than an hour, but in less than 20 minutes the aircraft touched down at CMMC where neurosurgeon Daniel Lacerte, MD, and his team were waiting. Sandra had sustained multiple injuries, including broken ribs, injuries to her teeth and jaw, and facial fractures. But the biggest danger was the pressure building within her skull as her damaged brain swelled. Dr. Lacerte decided to use a somewhat controversial decompression technique to relieve the pressure on her brain. Innovative Surgical Care Dr. Lacerte acknowledges that decompressive craniectomy, the surgical procedure he used to treat Sandra, is infrequently performed in most hospitals. But his experience working at major trauma centers in both the United States and Canada told him that the technique was the best option for saving Sandra’s life. What Dr. Lacerte may not have foreseen is that not only would it save her life, it set the stage for her remarkable recovery. Sandra’s brain injury was devastating and her chances for recovery were very uncertain. She lay comatose in the CMMC Intensive Care Unit for 19 days and was a patient on the unit for 33 days. George recalls that the day she opened her eyes, he knew she recognized him and understood where she was. He’d never felt such relief. Sandra was soon on her way to a rehabilitation facility in Baltimore, not far from her Maryland home. George vacated his room at CMMC’s Arbor House where he had resided during her stay and made the journey home. Recovery, Recognition and Gratitude Sandra’s memory of much of the last year is lost. She says she recalls bits and pieces of things, but has to rely on George for details of what happened. The injury did not, however, compromise her instincts and training as a nurse. As soon as she was able to get on a computer, she began researching the treatment of severe head injuries. She says her conclusion is that Dr. Lacerte provided “state-of-the art” care that saved both her life and her way of life. “It’s obvious that it has had a huge impact on my quality of life,” she says. “She’s a miracle patient,” George adds. In the late fall, Sandra and George returned to Maine to thank everyone who helped with her care. Their stops included visits with the first responders at Sunday River, LifeFlight, and a wide array of people at CMMC. Her meeting with Dr. Lacerte was particularly emotional for Sandra because despite her long stay at CMMC she did not remember him. “You did the right thing!” she said to him joyfully. “Everything you did was right!” “You have a lot to be proud of here,” George told Dr. Lacerte. “We wanted everyone to see what quality care can mean. She truly is a miracle patient.” ■ 10 2014 Partners in Giving | www.cmmc.org “You have a lot to be proud of here,” George told Dr. Lacerte. “We wanted everyone to see what quality care can mean. She truly is a miracle patient.” Sandra Bastinelli and her husband, George (far right), visited with neurosurgeon Daniel Lacerte, MD, recently to offer their thanks for the outstanding care he provided to Sandra last winter after she was critically injured in a skiing accident. “Recovering health… rediscovering life.” 11 THE DEMPSEY CENTER: IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE By Aimee Arsenault, Manager of Development and Special Events Our mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals, families and communities impacted by cancer through support, education, integrative medicine, outreach and prevention. The Dempsey Challenge: An Emotional, Impactful Weekend The 6th Annual Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen took place in Lewiston-Auburn on Sept. 27 & 28, on a picturesque autumn weekend. A run, walk and cycling event, the Challenge is the primary fundraiser for the Dempsey Center. The two-day event attracted 3,871 participants from Maine and beyond (34 states and 6 foreign countries), who raised over $1.1 million for the Dempsey Center! Thanks to our event sponsors and participants, all funds raised by Dempsey Challenge participants directly benefit the Dempsey Center, allowing us to provide our services at no cost. Over 1,100 volunteers gave their time to cheer on participants at the finish line, serve food in our café and lobster trap, manage recycling and trash, marshal our run and ride courses, sell merchandise, and much, much more. In its fourth year our youth engagement continued to grow. Participants 23 or under raised over $135,000, which was matched by Positive Tracks! Positive Tracks in a national, youth-centric non-profit organization that helps Generation Next get active and give back using the power of sport. In total, young people raised $307,919 through the Positive Tracks program for the 2014 Dempsey Challenge! The 2014 Dempsey Challenge campaign asked the question, “Who are you there for?” and throughout the weekend participants, volunteers, sponsors and spectators saw, heard, felt and shared these stories. A sixteen foot long mural covered in names gave visual representation of just how many people have been impacted by cancer, and spoke to the emotional importance of the Dempsey Challenge. The 2015 Dempsey Challenge will take place October 17 & 18, 2015, and registration is available via our website, dempseychallenge.org. “Recovering health… rediscovering life.” 13 THE WOMAN’S HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION The Woman’s Hospital Association has been assisting Central Maine Medical Center with fundraising efforts for 126 years. What started as a small nucleus of women has blossomed into a large group of dedicated volunteers who organize and participate in numerous fundraising events. Over the years the WHA has raised millions of dollars for the hospital. Following is a message from the new president, Susan Donovan of Greene. Hello! I am happy to be serving as the new President of the Woman’s Hospital Association at Central Maine Medical Center. It is an honor to help an organization that has given so much to others. I have a long background of fundraising that goes back to 1988, when I helped raise funds for the D.A.R.E programs in Greene and other Androscoggin communities. Since then, I have also served on the Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce (11 years), as well as other community organizations. As the co-owner (with my husband) of a small business in a rural community, I know the importance of interconnectedness. My personal belief is that life is best when we all give what we can, when we can, to those who need help. I first learned about the Woman’s Hospital Association at a CMMC Associates Volunteer luncheon, where I heard a presentation made by Nancy Wilkins, President of WHA at the time. I appreciated the WHA mission, and I was amazed at what the WHA had accomplished in donations to the different departments of this hospital. Nancy’s presentation inspired me to join and become an active board member. I was very fortunate to have been part of the 125th WHA celebration and to help document the history of this organization. It has given me the utmost appreciation and respect for what these women have accomplished. I hope to carry on the legacy of the founding women and to all those who have served since. Now as president, I am honored to oversee the many annual events we host. I also hope to introduce new events, and to make changes to help us raise even more money and increase our membership. Among the projects I hope to accomplish with the help of our hardworking membership are: • Update our page on the hospital’s website. • Create a PowerPoint presentation to show to other community organizations. This could help us increase our membership as well as let people know about our fundraising efforts. • Send newsletters to the membership two or three times a year. “It is an honor to help an organization that has given so much to others.” • Investigate acquiring a card reader that would allow us to accept credit and debit cards, which could help us increase sales. I am also interested in hearing the ideas other members might have. Thank you for your interest and support in the Woman’s Hospital Association. —Susan Donovan The Mission of the Woman’s Hospital Association The Woman’s Hospital Association Mission is to render service to Central Maine Medical Center and its patients and to promote the health and welfare of the community. THE 31ST ANNUAL TREE OF LOVE The Tree of Love is an annual holiday fundraising event that raises money for the immediate needs of CMMC’s cancer patients. This includes out-of-pocket expenses for prescriptions. During the holidays, WHA members sell ornaments and tree lights in honor or in memory of a loved one. The event ends with a tree-lighting ceremony in December. In 2014, the WHA raised $3,500. BAKE SALES The WHA holds three bake sales every year, in the main lobby of the hospital. Money raised is donated to a fund that helps patients who need assistance in paying for mammograms. Bake sales in 2014 raised $3,100 for this very important fund. WHA Achievements in 2014 Last year the Woman’s Hospital Association contributed $105,000 to patient-care needs. Here is a look at how funds were raised. THE WHA GIFT SHOP The biggest source of fundraising is through CMMC’s gift shop on the main floor. The gift shop is well known throughout the community for the variety and quality of affordable items it offers. The shop sells cards, flowers, jewelry, clothing and items of comfort for patients. It also sells popular collectibles. Last year, the gift shop raised $55,000 for CMMC. BIANNUAL JEWELRY SALES The WHA partners with In Design, a jewelry company that works with fundraising organizations. A jewelry sale is held in May and in December in the hospital lobby. Money raised is donated to scholarship programs offered by the Maine College of Health Professions. In 2014 we raised $3,600. ROTATING ART GALLERY Every month the WHA hangs the work of two local artists in the main lobby. A portion of sold works is donated to the WHA. It’s a great way for local artists to gain exposure (and hopefully earn some money), and the hospital profits not only with the donations, but with a changing creative palette every month. In 2014, we received $500 from art sales. HOLIDAY WREATH SALES This is a new WHA fundraising event. Twenty-five live wreaths were donated by Spruce Bay Farm & Landscaping of Poland, and then decorated by members. The wreath sales raised $465 for the Cancer Care Immediate Needs Fund. CUDDLES PROGRAM Through our “Cuddles Program” we are able to offer stuffed animals to our patients and visitors who might need an extra dose of comfort. Gently-used cuddly buddies are donated, then refurbished and cleaned with the help of local dry cleaners. The WHA is grateful to all who have helped bring some comfort to our guests. ARBOR HOUSE The Arbor House is a hospitality house that provides free accommodations to CMMC patients and/or their families who are traveling a long distance to receive care or offer support. The WHA lends support to the Arbor House in any way we can, with hands-on help. 18TH ANNUAL SPRING GALA The WHA works in partnership with the CMMC Development Office and Associate Volunteers with the Spring Gala. The gala offers a night of dancing, dining and support for the hospital. In 2014, the WHA assisted in raising $97,000. “Recovering health… rediscovering life.” 15 MINIMALLY INVASIVE BACK SURGERY GIVES MONMOUTH WOMAN HER LIFE BACK The folks who live near Carmen Caron in Monmouth can’t always gauge the weather by their energetic neighbor. Because even during the depths of winter, at some point during the day, they are likely to see their 70-year-old neighbor walking the Lake Road. If it’s cold and icy, Carmen just attaches ice grippers to her L.L. Bean boots. And as she notes, walking in the elements adds to the fitness benefits. “Sometimes I notice you get more of a work-out!” says Carmen. It has to be really bad outside before she will resort to using her elliptical. What makes Carmen walk? It is something she has always enjoyed—but never as much as she does now, as she keeps herself fit following a discectomy last October. Carmen credits Michael Regan, MD, her surgeon from the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Maine (OICM), with being her inspiration. “Once surgery was done, he said I would feel immediate relief,” Carmen says. “And I did.” After several months of unrelenting back pain, Carmen met with Dr. Regan last August. “Sometimes I could barely bend,” she says. Her primary care doctor had ordered X-rays, which revealed disc degeneration. The MRI ordered by Dr. Regan revealed a herniated disc. Disc no. L1S1, to be specific. Because the disc was ruptured, gel from the nucleus had leaked out and was causing pressure on the sciatic nerve. The pain that ran down Carmen’s leg to her foot made motion almost unbearable. Carmen tried non-surgical options for relief, including visits to a chiropractor, acupuncture, massage therapy and yoga. “He (Dr. Regan) saw I had tried everything,” she says. Dr. Regan was walking beside Carmen every step of the way, as she searched for a solution. When she could not find relief, he gave her information about a discectomy, a minimally invasive back surgery. Dr. Regan suggested she read the information he provided her and investigate some informative websites before 16 2014 Partners in Giving | www.cmmc.org making a decision. “He said to think it over,” she says. In some cases, patients will improve on their own—but the unknown factor is how long the pain will persist. Carmen opted for surgery because of the length of time she had suffered and the intensity of the pain. “I wanted to have this done,” she told him. “I can’t live like this.” Before the surgery, she and her husband talked everything over with Dr. Regan. “I absolutely love Dr. Regan,” she says. “My husband felt the same way. He explained everything to us. He didn’t just ask, ‘Do you have any questions?’ I knew what to expect.” The surgery is a same-day procedure. Thanks to technically advanced surgical tools, surgeons can move muscle, bones and ligaments to get to the herniated disc, and then trim away the damaged piece(s). They also remove bits of gel that ooze out, harden and press on nerves. The procedure, performed under general anesthesia, leaves patients with a small incision, usually about an inch and a half long. In most cases, patients feel relief immediately afterwards. “Once surgery was done, he said I would feel immediate relief,” Carmen says. “And I did.” Dr. Regan, known by his nurses as the “drill sergeant of walking,” also told Carmen to start walking the next day. Not far—just the length of her driveway—with the goal of increasing the distance every day. After two weeks, Carmen was walking a little more than a mile a day. She then increased to two miles, and before long, achieved her goal of being able to walk three to four miles every day. Carmen had walked before her back injury; so perhaps her love of exercise is part of the reason she experienced such positive results. The average recovery time for patients like her is six to eight weeks; she was told she had no restrictions after five weeks. Walking has not only kept her pain-free; Carmen enjoys the other benefits she missed when she was sidelined with pain. “I feel much better walking,” she says. “The fresh air, too, really gives you energy.” She also enjoys the companionship of her husband, who often walks with her. She admits that sometimes she might stop along the way to chat with a neighbor and end up just walking two-and-a- half miles or so as a result—but she makes up for it the next day. Carmen’s discectomy changed her life: She now has her healthy and happy life back. “It went better than what I expected,” she says. “I am very happy.” ■ OUR DONORS January 1, 2014 through December 31, 2014 Many thousands of individuals and businesses made donations to CMMC this year. During the 2014 calendar year, we received $3,242,602.69 in cash and in-kind gifts from 16,947 donors. We are grateful to the people in our communities —and beyond—who support our hospital, as they have for more than a century. As a result of the ongoing generosity of donors, we are able to provide the highest quality healthcare services, close to home. In this printed version of our Partners in Giving Report, we are only able to list the names of donors who contributed $250 or more, due to the space available. However, we list the names of all our donors on a searchable database at www.cmmc.org. LEGACY CIRCLE ($50,000 or more) HUMANITARIAN ($5,000 to $9,999) Amgen USA, Thousand Oaks, CA Mrs. Madeleine D. We are grateful for these generous donations, which are the bedrock of our funding. Unrestricted gifts allow us to direct money where it is most needed; restricted gifts are directed to areas within the hospital that the donor wishes to support. We are so thankful to the individuals, businesses and organizations who help us prepare for the future. 30 2014 Partners in Giving | www.cmmc.org UNRESTRICTED ENDOWMENT FUNDS E.
