Commissioners Participate in ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an
activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on one's head or donating to the
ALS Association in the United States. It went viral throughout social media during
the summer of 2014.
The challenge dares nominated participants to have a bucket of ice water
poured on their head. One common stipulation gives 24 hours from the time they
are nominated to complete the dare; otherwise, the participant is asked to
donate
money
to
charity.
Commissioner Blair Zimmerman & Sheriff Brian Tennant did the ice bucket
challenge
together
in
front
of
Hooper
Park
in
Waynesburg.
Commissioner Blair Zimmerman was challenged by Asa Winters, Waynesburg
Borough Patrolman, and he challenged Commissioners Chuck Morris & Archie
Trader, and Judge Farley Toothman. Commissioners Chuck Morris & Archie Trader
then challenged the County’s IT Director, Scott Kelley.
Sheriff Brian Tennant was challenged by Waynesburg Borough Patrolman Asa
Winters and State Rep. Pam Snyder. He is also making a $100 donation since it
went past the 24-hr deadline. He challenges Chief Craig Miller of the Cumberland
Township Police Dept., Chief Rob Toth of the Waynesburg Borough Police Dept.,
David Balint, Greene County Controller, and EMS Southwest Director of Operations
Rob
Bowman
and

Commissioners for having to endure a summer with no swimming. The pool also has lockers, restrooms, showers,
changing facilities and snack machines. Eight picnic pavilions at Mon View Park are also available to rent at various
rates.
Alpha Aquatic Center hours were noon to 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and noon to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Women take introductory sporting clays class
During the last week of August, the Greene County Department of Recreation offered a free threeday introductory sporting clays class for women. “Women’s Intro to Sporting Clays” was held at 5:30
p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, Tuesday, Aug. 26, and Thursday, Aug. 28, at Hunting Hills in Dilliner.
Classes were free for women ages 15 and older who have not previously taken the classes, which
have been held every summer since 2011. The deadline for pre-registration was Friday, Aug. 15, and
class space was limited to 12 new students plus anyone who was wait-listed last year. Each student
had to submit a signed waiver.
Certified National Sporting Clays Association Level 1 instructors Chuck Mallory and Randy Coss led
the classes, which covered the fundamentals of clay target shooting. Students were expected to
become familiar with different types of guns, techniques of stance and how to mount a gun.
Students also viewed a variety of trap positions and clay speeds and sizes, and tried shooting
targets.
Students should have brought their own 12- or 20-gauge shotgun, over-and-under or semiautomatic, as well as eye and ear protection. Loaner guns, shells, and eye and ear protection were
also provided on site.
The “Women’s Intro to Sporting Clays” classes were sponsored by the Greene County
Commissioners, Hunting Hills and Friends of the National Rifle Association. For more information, call
the Department of Recreation at 724-852-5323.

Heroes Run/Walk set for Sept. 20
The Greene County Department of Recreation will host the 2014 Heroes Run/Walk
beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, along the Greene River Trail.
Participants can sign up for the race at a pre-registration rate of $18 by Friday, Sept.
12, or pay a $20 registration fee on the day of the race. Race-day registration and
packet pick-up will begin at 7 a.m. at the Greene Cove Yacht Club in Millsboro, Pa.
At the conclusion of the race, the top three male and female runners and walkers
overall will receive awards, as well as the top three male and female runners and
walkers in various age categories. Refreshments and a random drawing for prizes
will also be held following the race.
This year’s event marks the eighth annual 5K run/walk and 15K run held in honor of
Army Spc. Gregory Cox of Carmichaels and Marine Lance Cpl. Steven Phillips of
Spraggs. Both men were killed in Humvee accidents in Iraq; Cox, 21, died in
September 2004, and Phillips, 27, died in February 2006.
Race proceeds benefit memorial funds established in the men’s names. The Spc.
Gregory A. Cox Memorial Scholarship Fund assists Greene County high school
graduates entering the fields of public safety or public service, or the Army Reserve
Officers’ Training Corps. The Lance Cpl. Steven Phillips Memorial Fund provides
support for the computer-aided drafting program at the Greene County Career
and Technology Center. Both funds are being handled by the Community
Foundation of Greene County.
Race proceeds also help fund the cost of transportation for Greene County
veterans receiving treatment at the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System
clinic in Pittsburgh.
Last year’s Heroes Run/Walk raised approximately $11,000, and more than 250
individuals registered. Thanks to a partnership with Central Greene School District,
more than 100 employees and family members registered for the race as runners,
walkers or “sleep-ins,” in which those individuals paid a registration fee but did not
attend the race. The school district’s efforts raised more than $3,000.
The Heroes Run/Walk is sponsored by the Greene County Commissioners and is
coordinated by the Department of Recreation and the Cox and Phillips families.
For more information, call the Department of Recreation at 724-852-5323, or visit

The fourth seasonal Flashlight Drags Race will be
held on September 13th at the Greene County
Airport.
The concept is a throwback to the early days of
drag racing, where two cars line up for a race and
someone blazes a flashlight to signal the start. A
1/8-mile race, heads-up format, no brackets and no
classes—just for fun. That means racers can race
against anyone they want, as often as they want.
These races are held at the Greene County Airport;
the costs are $30 to race and $6 to watch. Gates
open at 11:30 am, racing starts at 2:00 pm until
6pm. Outlaw hour begins at 6pm.
The final scheduled date for these popular drags
will be on October 5, 2014. Date subject to change,
rain dates will be the following weekend if schedules
permit. FMI, call the Department of Recreation at
724-852-5323 or visit www.flashlightdrags.com .
On September 17, the Waynesburg Farmers’ Market
will be participating in "Harvest for the Hungry," a fun,
charitable event that gives farmers’ market customers
an opportunity to support their local farmers while
giving back to families in need. At the market,
customers are encouraged to purchase an extra bag
of produce from their favorite market vendors and
donate that to a local food pantry. Canned item
donations may also be donated. All donations may
be dropped off at the market manager’s table. All
food items will benefit the Corner Cupboard Food
Bank, which distributes to 11 food pantries in the
county.

Conservation District Partners with landowners to monitor water quality
Many rural residents of Greene County rely on private wells or springs for their drinking water.
Water quality is very important to our communities and can be affected by a number of
things like:



Improper handling and application of manure, fertilizers, and other nutrients.
Leaking underground storage tanks and septic systems
Pollution
associated
with
landfills,
industry,
and
energy
development
Greene County Conservation District is partnering with landowners to monitor water quality in
homes and streams throughout the county. Monitoring water quality allows us to be confident
that the water we are drinking is safe. It also allows us to detect and identify problems early so
we can take action.
The Conservation District is providing
landowners with a water monitoring device-,
called a CATTFish. It installs in a toilet tank in
less than five minutes and monitors the
conductivity and temperature of incoming
water. The CATTFish is an easy and free way
for a landowner to find out about water
quality in their well or spring.
Landowners interested in participating with
this project can contact Jared D. Zinn, the
county watershed specialist, by email at
[email protected], or by phone at 724852-5278.
