‘UP STREAM’ program launches at county Day Camps
Thanks to a generous donation from the Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation, Greene County
children ages 5 to 15 years old are enjoying a brand-new educational opportunity at this summer’s Day
Camp program.
“UP STREAM,” or “YoU being Physical in Science, Technology, Recreation, Engineering, Art and Math,”
launched during the first week of Day Camp at all four camp locations. The hospital foundation, a
nonprofit organization that provides outreach programs emphasizing healthcare, is the sole sponsor of
“UP STREAM,” donating $40,000 for programming and supplies.
“At the end of last year’s Day Camp, we knew we wanted to take the program in a different direction,”
said Jake Blaker, recreation director. “We wanted the program to be educational for the campers and
to emphasize physical activity. We also wanted to provide our counselors with better opportunities in
leadership and teaching.
“Once the idea for ‘UP STREAM’ was developed, we approached the Greene County Memorial Hospital
Foundation for funding. The foundation truly stepped up to the plate for the kids of Greene County to
sponsor this program.”
The program capitalizes on the increasing interest in the STEM fields – science, technology, engineering
and mathematics – that have been identified as key growth areas for jobs, with the potential for kids to
establish an early relationship with the fields that may turn into a career path.
This year’s Day Camp began June 15 and will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday until
July 24. Locations include Jefferson Township Park in Jefferson, Lions Club Park in Waynesburg, Mon View
Park in Greensboro and Wana B Park in Carmichaels.
The “UP STREAM” program will be held for the first five weeks of camp, with each site participating twice
a week for an hour to an hour and a half. Each lesson plan consists of an interactive, simple discussion
explaining the theme of the lesson and a hands-on activity that engages campers to use their creativity
and apply their new knowledge in constructing various arts and crafts. Campers will also improve their
strategizing and problem-solving skills and conduct various experiments that will help them see science
in a fun light. Activities are broken into two age groups, ages 5-8 and 9-15. After the lesson and activities,
campers then participate in a game or sport related to the lesson for the promotion of physical activity.
Topics covered in “UP STREAM” are: crystal formations, rocket history, molecular interactions, importance
of plants, human skeletal system, polymer properties and behaviors, wind intensities and storms, fossil
formations, honeybee society and behavior and different ways light travels.
During the last week of Day Camp, campers ages 5-8 will be bussed to the Greene County Fairgrounds
for a “Lego Day” and a field trip to Alpha Aquatic Center. Campers ages 9-15 will be broken into two
separate trips to Nemacolin Woodlands Adventure Center, which features foot rope courses, climbing
walls and miniature golf. Children must meet attendance and behavior requirements for the “UP
STREAM” program to participate in the field trips. Both field trips are sponsored by the Greene County
Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The “UP STREAM” program replaces the previous “Camp Challenge” program, which the hospital
foundation had also funded.
On Friday, July 24, an end-of-the-year picnic will take place at Wana B Park. Greene County Memorial
Hospital Foundation will also fund two Lazer Tag Battle Cruisers from Fantasy World Entertainment. Lunch
and snacks will be provided by the hospital foundation and Carmichaels Area School District. After lunch,
the children will enjoy Carmichaels Pool for the afternoon.
All meals, supplies and activities are provided free of charge to campers. Day Camp will not be held
Friday, July 3, due to the Fourth of July holiday. For more information on the summer Day Camp program
or “UP STREAM,” call the Department of Recreation at 724-852-5323.
For interviews with the Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation, call David R. Jones, foundation executive director, at 724-852-2060.

New Transportation software, fare changes take effect
Effective June 16, the Greene County Transportation Services program began using a new paratransit
scheduling software, which has necessitated changes to trip procedures and fares for all riders.
The new software, called Ecolane, is part of a statewide initiative to streamline the delivery of shared-ride
services, reduce costs and improve efficiencies. The use of Ecolane will change how trips are scheduled
and how riders will be picked up and returned home.
Under the new scheduling system, ride reservations can only be made between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday
through Friday. Calls to schedule appointments must still be made no later than noon on the day before a
requested ride, and by noon on a Friday if the requested trip day is a Monday. Riders are reminded that
their calls for reservations may take longer as the new software is used to schedule their trip.
Instead of paper manifests, drivers will now have electronic tablets, meaning that last-minute or on-board
route changes cannot be made. The new software will enable Transportation staff to better group together
riders from the same area and design schedules. For return trips, riders can select to schedule a specific
pick-up time or to call when they are ready; although there may be up to an hour wait for the bus to return.
Riders will now need to have the physical address of their trip destination, and appointment time if
applicable, when they call. Riders will also need to schedule the appropriate length of time at their
destination and have exact change for their trip fare when they board.
Transportation fares for all riders will be adjusted accordingly. Instead of separate medical and nonmedical rates, all riders will be charged one fare.
During their May 21 regular meeting, the Greene County Commissioners approved an application to the
state Department of Transportation outlining the fare adjustment and increase. The application and
changes were recently approved by PennDOT, which pays for up to 85 percent of the fares through
different funding streams. Riders are responsible for the difference in the form of a co-payment.
Greene County Transportation provides rides to consumers eligible for the state Senior Shared-Ride and
Rural Transportation for Persons with Disabilities programs. The office also provides advance-reservation,
shared-ride, door-to-door transportation services to residents of Greene County through the Medical
Assistance Transportation program, as well as to members of the general public needing transportation.
Out-of-county trips are only for medical appointments scheduled between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. MATP
consumers will not be affected by any of the changes.
Co-payments will vary by funding stream and distance to the destination, so Transportation office staff will
work individually with consumers to determine the change in the co-payments they will need to make.
Registered individuals age 65 and older will still travel at no cost to them to senior centers and adult day
cares due to continued sponsorship from the Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging. In
addition, the agency will continue to sponsor a portion of the cost of medical trips for individuals age 65
and older.
Funding for the Greene County Transportation Services program is provided by the Pennsylvania
Department of Aging, the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare and PennDOT’s Shared-Ride
Program.
For more information or questions about program changes, call the Transportation office at 724-627-6778, or

Recreation to offer all-ages tennis camp
The Greene County Department of Recreation will next month offer an all-ages week-long tennis
camp at the county’s tennis courts at 900 Rolling Meadows Road in Waynesburg.
The tennis camp will run from Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17. Instruction sessions are 8:30
to 9:45 a.m. for children ages 7 to 10, and 10 to 11:30 a.m. for age 11 and older. The camp costs
$50 and includes a T-shirt. The deadline to register for the camp is Wednesday, July 8.
Tennis skills such as serving, forehand, backhand and volleying will be taught throughout the
week, and campers will also learn how to play in singles and doubles competition.

Lifeguard course scheduled for July
The Greene County Department of Recreation is planning a lifeguard training course for anyone
still interested in becoming a lifeguard at any of the three county pools. Classes will run from 8
a.m. to noon Monday, July 20, through Friday, July 24, at Alpha Aquatic Center, 200 E. Roy Furman
Highway, Waynesburg.
Interested candidates must be at least 16 years of age and be able to attend and pass courses in
professional lifeguarding, first-aid and CPR/AED training. Course participants are required to bring
a modest bathing suit (one-piece for women, and trunks or jammers for men), goggles and towels
to all sessions. The pre-registration deadline is Friday, July 10, and six registrants are needed to hold
the class.
The three county pools – Alpha Aquatic Center, Carmichaels Pool in Carmichaels and Mon View
Pool in Greensboro – are all now open daily for summer swimming. Carmichaels and Mon View
will close for the season Saturday, Aug. 15. Alpha Aquatic Center will be closed the week of Aug.
31-Sept. 4 as students return to school. Alpha will then reopen for the Labor Day weekend and
officially close for the season Monday, Sept. 7. Pool hours are subject to change due to staff
availability or inclement weather.
Lifeguards hired for this summer will need to attend additional mandatory training sessions.
For more information about becoming a lifeguard, or to register for the lifeguard training course,
call the Department of Recreation at 724-852-5323. For employment information, call Human
Resources at 724-852-5200, or visit www.co.greene.pa.us to apply online.

County Day Camp program started June 15
Greene County children ages 5 to 15 years old are able to enjoy free activities this summer during the
county Day Camp program, which launched June 15. The camp will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday
through Friday until July 24.
Pre-registration for Day Camp was held from noon to 3 p.m. June 12, at all camp locations; however,
anyone can register for Day Camp at any time during the six-week session.
This year, Day Camp locations include Jefferson Township Park in Jefferson, Lions Club Park in Waynesburg,
Mon View Park in Greensboro and Wana B Park in Carmichaels.
Sign-ups were also held June 12 at Bobtown Elementary School in Bobtown, Graysville Elementary in
Graysville, Morris Township Community Center in Nineveh and Nemacolin Firehall in Nemacolin. These four
sites will serve as drop-off and pick-up locations for the main camps. Bobtown campers will be bussed to
Mon View Park, Graysville and Nineveh campers to Lions Club Park and Nemacolin campers to Wana B
Park. After morning programming, Jefferson campers will also be bussed to Wana B Park for lunch and
swimming.
Due to the ongoing restoration of Duke Lake, Ryerson Station State Park in Wind Ridge will not be used as a
camp location this year. Children who previously attended the Ryerson camp can use the Graysville or
Nineveh sites to be bussed to Lions Club Park.
Bussing for the Day Camp program is paid for in part by grants from the Community Foundation of Greene
County and the Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation.
Campers will have a variety of activities scheduled for them each day, including arts and crafts, games
and educational programs. They may also swim at any of the three county pools for only $2 per day. All
campers will receive a 2015 Day Camp T-shirt that they will wear on the Day Camp field trips.
Lunches will be provided to campers at all sites through a partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh
Community Food Bank and the Community Foundation of Greene County. The Carmichaels Area and
Central Greene school districts will prepare the meals daily as part of the Greene County Summer Food
Program, an initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the state
Department of Education.
New programming this year includes hands-on projects covering science, technology, recreation,
engineering, art and math. The “UP STREAM” program will combine these topics with physical activity.
“We’re excited to offer a new educational program to Day Camp,” said recreation director Jake Blaker.
“Each child will not only visually examine these topics and other areas, but the projects will allow each child
to kinesthetically experience them through exploration and exercise.”
Activities returning this year include art experiences provided by the Monon Center of Greensboro. The
classes will promote creativity and imagination through hands-on experiences in creating artwork. Funding
is made possible in part through a grant from the Community Foundation of Greene County.
Other programs throughout the summer will be presented by Domestic Violence Services of SWPA,
Flenniken Library, Greene County Conservation District, Greene County Human Services and Penn State
Cooperative Extension.

Putting Water in Perspective
The Conservation District has several water monitoring projects going on right now. We are working with landowners
to monitor groundwater quality by installing monitoring devices in drinking water wells. We are also monitoring
surface water by installing monitoring devices in Greene County streams. In addition to these projects, we are also
undertaking an assessment of water quality throughout the entire South Fork Tenmile Creek Watershed (Greene
County’s largest watershed by area). Someone might wonder why we spend so much time monitoring water quality.
The main reason is that clean, fresh water is vitally important to our lives. We use it for drinking water, cooking and
food prep, sanitation, and personal hygiene. A recommended minimum water requirement for a single person is 50
liters per day, or roughly 13 gallons (Gleick 1996). In developed countries like the United States, a typical person uses
much more than this each day. According to the United States Census, the population of Greene County was 37,843
in 2014 (USCB 2015). That means that for every person in Greene County to have their recommended minimum water
requirement, we would need 1,892,150 liters of water each day. That is roughly 500,000 gallons per day.
Although it may not seem like it during Greene County’s heavy spring rains, water resources are not unlimited. Less
than three percent of the earth’s water is fresh water, and much of that is tied up in glaciers and the polar ice caps,
leaving only a tiny fraction for use by humans and other organisms (USGS, 2015). From a global perspective, 750
million people do not have access to clean water and more than 840,000 die each year from a water-related
disease (Water.org, 2015).
Because clean water is so important to our lives, we must be vigilant in protecting it. In many cases, we don’t realize
that water is becoming polluted until some catastrophic event, like a fish kill or human health issue, alerts us. By this
point, cleaning up the polluted water resources is extremely costly or impossible. Continuously monitoring our water
resources allow us to detect changes in water quality early when quick and decisive action can help us avoid
catastrophic events.
I hope that this article provides some perspective on the importance of our water resources and on water quality
monitoring. I encourage everyone in Greene County to get involved with water quality monitoring activities, no
matter whether it is with the Conservation District or with one of the other agencies actively monitoring water quality
in Greene County. There are lots of programs available and some require very little time and activity on the part of
the landowner; in some cases, nothing more than your permission to cross your land and access a stream.
If you have any questions about water quality in Greene County or are interested in getting involved with monitoring
programs in the county, please feel free to contact me, Jared D. Zinn, at 724-852-5278, send me an email at
[email protected], or stop into the Conservation District office at 19 South Washington Street, Waynesburg, PA
15370.
